This year’s regatta will be held from September 8 to 12 fter two long years, the spectacle of the “Vele d’Epoca” (Classic Yachts), is back in the Bay of Imperia. This event, now a part of the historic and social fabric of the city, has over the years also become the most important sailing rendezvous in the Mediterranean—attracting boats, crews, television, specialty press, and media partners from all over the world—to this city on the western border of Liguria. To give the reader an idea, the first time the event was held, ten foreign yachts were entered. During the course of the fifteen races held between 1986 and today, some of the most fascinating yachts in existence have competed, each with its own story to tell. There is the Sif, which dates to 1894; the Bona Fide, a champion several times. Royono, a “goletta”, was used by John Kennedy when he had secret rendezvous with Marylin Monroe; the Lasse was bestowed by the King of Denmark on Eva Braun; and the legendary Pen Duick has Eric skipper Eric Tabarly. The yachts start to feel their age, as the head of organization, Lucio Carli, President of the Assonautica Provinciale di Imperia, points out. “Classic yachts are definitely difficult. They don’t have electric winches, just muscle power. That’s the only way to govern these gems of the sea.” Gems which need the occasional artisan surgery to keep their antique splendor alight. They transform the pier at Calata Anselmi into a true floating museum. During the days of the regatta Calata Anselmi becomes a “village” where people wander through the stands, bumping into celebrities from showbiz, culture, and sailing. “In all the years that I have been coming here, there has been an air of hospitality and relaxation that is totally different from any other competition of this type in Italy.” muses Gianni Loffredo, President of the A.I.V.E. Concerts, shows, and fireworks. The Nautical Antiques Show with an auction of maritime art, under the aegis of the Genoese auction house, Casa d’Aste Cambi, features over 200 lots exhibited in the port area on Saturday, September 11, and includes portraits of sailing ships and galleons from the XIX century, navigational instruments, sea charts and antique ship furnishings, along with a selection of sailboats from the thirties to the early seventies. To coincide with the regatta, the Shipowners’ Floral Decoration Entity will bring together the best decorators in Europe for the “City of Imperia International Floral Decoration Competition” on three themes: A Port: great dimension in free style; A Boat Harbor: collage in free style; and An Aperitivo at the Yacht Club: table for a buffet in new style. The program also offers a national photographic competition, “Sails and Around Sails”, and guided tours along the historic “Vie del Sale” (Salt Roads), the old mule paths which during the Middle Ages were the main trade routes bringing salt from the sea to the northern plains of Italy. Well, yes, but when the wind starts to fill the sails, the relaxed atmosphere completely disappears into a tense competition between 3 classes of sailboats: historic yachts, built before 1950; classic yachts built between 1950 and 1977; and the special section called (in English) “Spirit of Tradition”, which features modern boats whose design and materials bring back the classic style. Organized by the Assonautica and the A.I.V.E, the event is on the CIM (Comité International de la Méditerranée) circuit, and Panerai has been title sponsor of the event since 2006. This year’s season has really heated up as the gulf in front of Imperia has changed look with a new tourist harbor. The fruit of a long four-year endeavor—with announcements, retractions, reciprocal accusations between the City, the Opposition, and Porto Imperia Spa, the company in charge of the project— peria Spa, la società che ha curato e realizzato il progetto. Dati che confermano il ruolo di traino che la manifestazione riveste per la città e il comparto nautico, e che il nuovo porto è destinato a favorire ulteriormente. b the harbor is seen as a gem of the Mediterranean for some, and as a heavy financial burden for others. But its impact cannot be denied. 1,300 new docking spots, 9,000 sq. meters of structures and services, 112 residences, beaches, playgrounds, green areas, pedestrian walkways, and parking areas, covering a total 268,000 sq. meters between and land and the sea, the numbers speak by themselves. The new offering guarantees a top of the line tourist harbor worthy of an event of the caliber of the “Vele d’Epoca”, which in 2008 saw 101 yachts at the starting line, covered by 202 newspapers, and hosted 200,000 estimated visitors. All this provides an enormous economic benefit to the area, along with a short and medium term image which also helps local companies. Data has shown that the event stimulates the city and its nautical sector. The new harbor will do even more. b Imperia da non perdere. Many are the attractive landmarks and landscapes worth visiting during the breaks in the regatta. Art lovers will enjoy the 18th century Collegiata di San Giovanni Battista, the neo-classic Duomo of San Maurizio and the baroque Monastery of Santa Chiara, which has a unique panorama of the gulf. At sunset the medieval buildings at Parasio, the historic old town center perched on the promontory at Porto Maurizio, take you back in time. Recently the renovation of Villa Grock has been completed. This was the home of the world-famous Swiss clown, Charles Adrien Wettach, when he retired. The name of the villa was changed to his stage name after his death. Among the museums, a visit to the City Art Gallery, the International Naval Museum, and the Carli Olive Oil Museum are all well worth their while. “U Gli alberi e le funi delle "Signore del mare" in gara sul mare di Imperia incorniciano le facciate e i monumenti della città Masts and rigging, the “ladies of the sea” race each other at Imperia, framed by the facades and the monuments of the town e now have an extraordinary new opportunity to relaunch the local economy.” The words are those of Franco Amadeo, the President of the Imperia Chamber of Commerce, as he tells about the town’s brand-new tourist harbor, which is inserted into a modern port, equipped with all the latest avantgard services, parking places and garages for sportsmen, pedestrian areas, and a futurist commerce hall which is just now being finished. Bu t how does this new coast al asset directly af fect t he city? We’re talking about a huge transformation that involves maritime, commercial, and tourismrelated companies, with the active involvement of the Chamber of Commerce in financing, initiatives, and focused projects to create new jobs and new professional figures. Events like the “Vele d’Epoca” (Sails from the Past) show how important it is to have events that advertise the worth of a geographic area. “Vele d’Epoca”, and also “Olioliva” are precious instruments to get people to know about the resources that our territory offers. We excels in olive oil production, along with other agricultural products such as flowers, but then there is also history, art, culture, and the traditions of our lovely towns and villages. We have splendid artisans workshops in the hinterland. Wh at i s th e fu tu re rout e and rol e of th e Ch amber of Commerce? Our main goal is to get the word out abroad. We want foreigners to know about our quality of life and also about our companies that offer and produce unique brands. The key words are innovation, research, advanced technology, development and professionalism. Our promotion campaigns must stress our hospitality—with its emphasis on agri-tourism, but also our products, our artisans, and our many women entrepreneurs. The best of the “Mediterranean diet” is highlighted by top-quality, cold-pressed, extravirgin olive oil from Taggia, which is the perfect foil for all our typical food products from wines to cheeses to fish from the Gulf of Genoa. b “W Il notaio Franco Amadeo, imperiese, già vice presidente ed assessore al Turismo provinciale dell’era Giuliano, è presidente della Camera di Commercio della sua città: "Il nostro nuovo assetto costiero è una straordinaria opportunità per il turismo e il commercio.
