From bicycle frames to Ferrari chassis, passing through furniture and ski-sticks. Entrato in azienda ancora “I want to do business in iron and steel and make a fair and honest profit,” wrote Angelo Luigi Colombo, aged 27, to the lessee of what was shortly to become A.L. Colombo’s small factory, the parent plant of the current Columbus. Angelo Luigi had started work when he was just 12 years old and, in 1919, after gaining sufficient experience, had decided to establish himself, seeing the cycling sector as fertile ground for his entrepreneurial vocation. His first customers were mostly small manufacturers but also leading cycling factories: Edoardo Bianchi, Umberto Dei, Atala, Giovanni Maino, and the Fratelli Doniselli. Being aware of market movements, curious and highly motivated, Angelo Luigi brought the company through the Second World War and the revival, constantly developping his technological equipment, machinery and men, diversifying interests and production. In 1931, the company was able to manufacture welded and seamless steel tubes used for the production of bicycles motorcycles (Guzzi was winning with frames made of Colombo tubes), cars and aeroplanes. Cooperation with Gianni Caproni goes back to that period. Using Colombo tubes, the bearing frames of the aircraft of De Pinedo and Cesare Balbo were produced to make the first Atlantic crossings. From the story of aviation to the story of modern furniture: again in the ‘30s, A.L. Colombo started to produce rational, tubular furniture made of chrome steel. This proved to be a real commercial success, which is recognized today among the design leaders. Still in the ‘30s, the first set of special tubes for bicycles were produced: Aelle, Tenax and Columbus. Under the Columbus mark, the first reinforced tubes with a tapered thickness made of molybdenum chrome steel in the history of cycling appeared, as well as the first cold-rolled elliptical fork blades. With a broad sample collection in production (tubes for electrical equipment, ski-sticks, ship boiler vaporizers, tennis court poles, springs for cushions, car seats and mattresses, under the Igea-Columbus mark). Colombo laid down specific regulations in those years that have characterized the company’s entire history. In 1950 A.L. Colombo became a joint-stock company and Colombo’s son, Gilberto, joined the company. He began designing car chassis, setting up the company Gilco whose customers include Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia. Fangio, Ascari and Villoresi therefore raced in cars with Colombo chassis. The passion for cycling throughout this context remained alive and strong. It was Angelo’s youngest son, Antonio, however, who made a simple ANGELO LUIGI COLOMBO FONDATORE, NEL 1919, DELLA A.L. Aumenta e si struttura completamente, l’offerta di kit completi carro posteriore-forcella, in fibra di carbonio. mark, Columbus, into the leading company for the production of tubes for top-of-the-range frames. Antonio Colombo joined the company while he was still studying law. In 1977, he left the position of Chairman of A.L. Colombo and separated Columbus from the parent company to concentrate on the production of bicycle tubes; and there have been constant innovations since it was set up. The steering column with a tapered screw was introduced and CYCLEX steel was launched, specifically designed for cycling use, followed by NIVACROM, one of Columbus’ greatest innovations. Before making a series of 11 totally aerodynamic tubes (AIR, 1980) Columbus placed its experience at the service of Moser for its Time Trial records, then passing through Oersted to Rominger. MAX (1987) was the first tube-set to break the tradition of conventional diameters. Max introduced the concept of orientated ellipses and differentiated sections, applied to each of the 11 tubes, to give the frame greater rigidity. The GENIUS (1991) tubing, made of Nivacrom steel, was an unprecedented success. For the first time in the history of cycling, the concept of “Differential Shape Butting” appeared. In 1994, to celebrate 110 years of Bianchi, Columbus strengthened the friendship that born between the fathers of the two companies, making MEGATUBE® solely for the Treviglio company. Megatube has become a must and is now one of the strong points of the Milanese company, with more than 25 different shapes. In 1985, the Columbus adventure also began in the mountain bike sector with the OR tubing for Cinelli and the custom series for Tom Ritchey (the first fork blades with a variable thickness). With the CYBER tube set (1994), and then with Genius mtb, Columbus began accumulating World Championship mtb victories: from Brentjens with American Eagle to Acquaroli with Bianchi, to the Sunn Team and their multi-medallists Vouilloz, Martinez and Chausson. The competitive sector is obviously not the least: from Coppi and Bartali who were the first to use the Colombo tubes, passing through Merckx, Gimondi, Hinault, Lemond, Argentin, Fondriest, Chiappucci, Roche, Rominger, Pantani, Chioccioli, Armstrong, Rijs, Bartoli, Olano, Tonkov, Brochard, Zuelle, Virenque, Freire and Savoldelli. NEMO emerged in 1996 and is the most sophisticated expression of cycling engineering: from a study on stress applied to the frame, produced using a portable recording system and with the subsequent FEM calculation (Finished Elements Measurement) the map of stresses in the frame and the ZBC technology (Zone Butted Concept) emerged. 1999 Columbus introduces THERMACROM the most innovative cycling purposed steel: It gives incredible lightness and the most durable, high performance mechanical characteristics. Year 2000, STARSHIP: a 6000 series aerospatial HT light aluminum alloy that will allow the lightest frames ever made together with the highest mechanical characteristics. Year 2001, Starship sets itself at the top becoming the reference point for any superlight, superstiff road racing or mtb frame. Year 2002, Columbus launches XLR8R a new 7000 alloy. As good as Starship, XLR8R introduces the concept of Multi Shape Damping Effect.Year 2003, Custom made frames in carbon fiber are no longer a dream. Columbus introduces XLR8R Carbon, a serie of carbon tubes made for road racing competition. 2004, Columbus introduces SPIRIT. Steel is coming back in the cycling field with this innovative, high performance tube-set. In the mean time, the range of carbon fiber frame kits (rear stays and forks), widens and becomes a core business of the Columbus production. cat.Columbus 2004/05_OK 25-08-2004 12:13 Pagina 5 I materiali. The materials. Carbon Fiber, Aluminum or Steel? The landscape of materials used in creating a frame (Road or MTB) currently includes steel, aluminum alloys and composites. These materials have different mechanical and physical characteristics. Aluminum is the most common material followed by steel and composites. The latter represents the most recent growing frontier of advanced materials. When making a selection, it is necessary to keep in mind some fundamental differences. Aluminum, with equal sections, is three times lighter than steel, but has inferior mechanical characteristics, in terms of resistance and behavior under repeated strains (fatigue). To compensate for these differences and take greater advantage of the material’s lightweight, the tube sections are increased, especially in their diameter, to increase the moment of inertia, i.e. the geometric capacity of resistance to strains, distributing them over wider surfaces. Balancing tube diameters and thicknesses makes it possible to achieve results that are comparable or even superior to steel, with an advantage in terms of weight that is still significant. Steel, though it is the “oldest” of the materials used in the cycling field, is still evolving. An example is found in the Niobium steel from Columbus. Its superior mechanical features and its ability to be tempered in air results in a lightweight frame with the durability that only steel can provide. Composite materials, as opposed to metallic materials, let us achieve values of strength and resistance that differ according to direction (anisotropy), accompanied by a specific weight lower than those of the other two materials. A critical aspect of these materials is their extreme specialization, which means that they have precise fields of use and require a considerable design effort to be correctly used. 5 cat.Columbus 2004/05_OK 25-08-2004 PERCHÉ SCEGLIERE LA FIBRA DI CARBONIO? WHY CHOOSE CARBON FIBER? The carbon fiber composite has superior mechanical characteristics. It has a great ability to decrease vibrations and by correctly directing the fibers, you obtain at each point the desired characteristics of strength and resistance. The other side of the coin is the extreme specialization and precise fields of use. The resins used in the production of carbon fiber, have usage temperature limits of 90°C. The carbon fiber composite has a thermal expansion coefficient 50 times less than that of aluminum, therefore a great deal of attention must be paid to joining the aluminum and composites. This all requires a great design effort. The product must be studied in depth in the design stage. Finished elements analysis allows us to map the strains and therefore the correct structuring of the piece. Columbus has provided in its assembly instruction manuals for the carbon parts, precise instructions to frame makers to avoid errors and problems. THE CARBON FIBER COMPOSITE Composite material is defined as a material obtained through the union of two or more materials that are chemically or physically distinct on a macroscopic level and are insoluble, having properties that are technologically superior to those of its components in one or more aspect. There are also composite materials in nature, such as wood. The first applications of composites can be dated back to ancient Egypt when the bricks were made of clay mixed with chopped straw. Modern composites consist of the union of a filling material (matrix) with a reinforcing material. The most common are composites in which the reinforcement consists of fiber and the matrix is a polymer resin. These are very common in the aerospace industry where their superior mechanical characteristics and lightweight are highly appreciated. There are diverse methods for producing composite products. The one used by Columbus requires a first stage in which the layers of prepreg (unidirectional carbon fiber immersed in a partially-polymerized epoxy matrix) are arranged in a mold following the directions of greatest strains. Once the mold is closed, it is put in an autoclave to complete the polymerization of the resin (thereby giving the product its final constancy) with a curing cycle (pressure and temperature cycle in the autoclave). Finally, the resulting product is extracted from the mold and goes on to the finishing operations. The composites chosen by Columbus use: High Tensile Strength Carbon Fiber T-700, a material generally used to make parts of the wings and the fuselage of airplanes. It has highly superior mechanical resistance characteristics. It’s the point of departure for every good fiber product (such as on the Link, Muscle, Super Muscle and Carve forks and stays and the XLR8R Carbon tubes) High Modulus Carbon Fiber. It is 10% stronger and 20% lighter than T-700. It is used in addition to T-700 (for example on the forks and stays of Muscle, Super Muscle and Carve) because it combines with the superior mechanical characteristics the former, optimizing resistance, strength and lightness. High Strength Unidirectional Carbon Fiber ET Epoxy, suitable for structures in which an optimal balance is sought between strength and resistance. In mum mechanical properties through a heat treatment cycle. The alloy 7000, used by Columbus for the tube sets Metal Altec2 Plus, Zonal and Airplane, is defined as self-tempering: it is air-hardened. This means that in the areas overheated by the welding the supersaturated structure is restored, which, owing to the natural ageing (which takes place at ambient temperature), allows for a 75% recovery of the initial properties after a lapse of time of about 3 weeks. Nevertheless, Columbus advises to carry out a precipitation hardening treatment in the oven in order to give the structure a bigger homogeneity of the precipitates, with consequent improvement Il ciclo di trattamento termico, è costituito da una fase di riscaldamento e permanenza ad una temperatura elevata of the fatigue behaviour of the frame. Per dare un’idea del livello di evoluzione di questa lega basti pensare che è prodotta in ambiente controllato (cioè le attrezzature vengono rigorosamente pulite prima e dopo la lavorazione per evitare che altri elementi possano contaminarla) e che per la saldatura sono stati sviluppati materiali d’apporto e trattamenti termici ad hoc. areas which have been heated by the welding and, by means of the hardening in the oven, load values are reached which make it possible to realize extremely light and reliable frames. The alloy used for the XLR8R represents the most recent product at the top of the Columbus range together with Starship. This is a sophisticated development of the 7000 Al-Zn-Mg, which through the addition of Zirconium (element used in nuclear reactors, to give an example of just one of its uses), achieving highly superior mechanical and resistance characteristics. The zirconium modifies the kinetics of the intermetallic composites in the matrix during the precipitation stage, conferring a very fine grain to the structure. In practical terms this means: a) Superior mechanical characteristics of the frame: Rm=550 Mpa, Rs=510 Ap5>12% b) Increase of the recrystallization temperature c) Greater resistance to the Hot Cracking phenomenon – the weakening of the material due to thermal alterations caused by welding d) Near complete recovery of the mechanical characteristics after welding through the use of a simple artificial aging thermal treatment. For an idea of this alloy’s degree of sophistication, consider that it is produced in a controlled environment (i.e. the equipment is meticulously cleaned before and after processing to avoid contamination by other components), and that heat treatment and filler materials were developed specifically for the welding. WHY CHOOSE ALUMINUM? Aluminum is synonymous with lightness and lightness, combined with good strength, is the quality most appreciated in cycling. However, if not properly treated, aluminum may deteriorate in time and this may give rise to a deterioration in the mechanical characteristics. Consequently, an aluminum frame inevitably requires more rigorous production processes and frequent checks by the user to identify any superficial defects or cracks. Undoubtedly the most obvious advantage is that it withstands the action of the atmospheric agents: an aluminum frame does not rust! Also, with its excellent workability, it enables the designer to come up with the most imaginative and creative solutions. Consente telai dalle prestazioni ottimali, rigidi eppure confortevoli, idonei a qualsiasi tipo d’impiego. WHY CHOOSE STEEL? Steel ensures high performance at really low weights. The new alloys, particularly Thermacrom, give a weight close to that of the aluminum alloys, together with a perfectly balancable elastic response, that is appreciated in particular on long traits. Unlike aluminum, steel is substantially stable over time, not requiring onerous maintenance cycles. If properly rust-treated, under normal conditions of use, it has almost unlimited fatigue resistance. It allows frames to be built with excellent performances, rigid yet comfortable, suitable for any type of use. 1. STEEL Steel is the material that was first used in the construction of top-of-the-range frames because of its superior mechanical characteristics, most notably its superior fatigue resistance and a breaking load second only to that of advanced composite materials. Columbus research has always worked towards the cus- What is steel? Steel is an iron/carbon alloy that, with the addition of several elements such as chrome, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, etc., Che cos’è l’acciaio develops specific characteristics such as L’acciaio è una lega ferro-carbonio che grazie all’aggiunta di tenacity, fatigue resistance, workability and alcuni elementi come cromo, nichel, manganese, molibdeno, insensitivity to overheating. vanadio, etc. sviluppa caratteristiche specifiche come tenacità, resistenza a fatica, lavorabilità, insensibilità al surriscaldo. Poggia su due pilastri fondamentali : The prime rule of the founder, Angelo Luigi, quality is taken care of at every stage of production and, for Columbus, is an essential condition. Raw material quality inspection Each batch of raw materials delivered to Columbus is accompanied by a certificate of conformity indicating the results of the chemical analyses (i.e. quantometric analysis to absorption), and the mechanical and geometrical characteristics. With this document, the supplier checks that the material complies with the purchase specifications. Columbus then conducts random tests in its own internal laboratories. Process inspection Characteristics are identified at each stage of production (quotas, forms, tolerances, etc.) that have to be checked to ensure the correct execution of the part. Each operator checks that these characteristics correspond to the specified values at specified intervals. A quality employee then randomly makes spot checks to confirm that the process is under control. Finally, each part is subjected to a visual inspection before delivery to the warehouse, to ensure that even the smallest surface defects are eliminated. 9 6 7 1. TEST A IMPATTO. CRASH TEST. 2. DESIGN DESCRIPTION The answer of Columbus engineers to similar requirements is an innovative down tube: diam. 42 mm., triple butted with three different sections, in Alu 7005 T6 HT. The part near the steering tube is oval. The central part is a shaped type X Megatube. The end section near the bottom bracket has an oval section that is butted and tapered. The tube has a triple butting, with low thicknesses and weight. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS DESIGN? • The oval section perfectly couples the diagonal tube and the steering tube. • The Megatube section was chosen to increase the strength of the tube on the vertical plain. Its quatrefoil section confers the optimal combination of resistance and strength. • The oval butted against the bottom bracket considerably strengthens this important frame joint, eliminating energy dispersions when pedalling. PRODUCTION PROCEDURES The starting tube is 42 mm in diameter and has been drawn to bring it to the triple-butted round section. Then, with special moulding equipment, exclusively of the Columbus Lab, definitive shapes are obtained. The finished tube is 49.4 mm on the steering side and 50 mm on the bottom bracket side. The alloy used is an aluminium-zinc-magnesium that ensures, with consecutive heat treatments, the tube’s optimal lightweight and weldability. 10
