Synopsis
In 1954, an Italian named Baron Ludovic Toeplitz arrived in Goa.
With the financial support of an enterprising Italian, Alessandro Vassallo, Toeplitz is
looking for iron ore for blast furnaces in Europe. He acquires the mining concession
Orasso Dongor in North Goa and starts a new company, Sesa Goa, Eonomici
Trade Limited Company, subsidiary of IRI-Finsider since 1955. Sesa Goa is
currently owned by the Indian group Vedanta Resources.
On December 12, 1961, with Operation Vijay, Goa was taken over and occupied by
the Indian army after 451 years of colonization by the Portuguese empire. Goa was
liberated on 19th December, 1961.
In addition to iron ore mining, trance music has its roots in the State of Goa. It
gained popularity in the late sixties and early seventies, when the Indian state
became known as the mecca of the hippies.
A group of musicians remained in Goa, concentrating on the development of music
along with other elements such as yoga and the use of psychedelic drugs.
The drug trade in the state of Goa has been characterized by infiltration that
touches the highest levels of politics, local law enforcement and various mafias.
Most of Goa’s forests are located within the eastern regions of the State on the
slopes of the Western Ghats, recognized as one of the 21 biodiversity hotspots in
the world.
Many animal species have lost their bearings because of the extensive illegal
mineral extraction which is deforming an entire ecosystem.

(Lecce, Salento Italy 27 December 1972). An autodidact from the young age of 16,
Mazzotta has collaborated with renowned fashion and advertising photographers.
Oil, his first feature film, garnered him the Best Italian Documentary Award and the
Legambiente Special Mention at Cinemambiente 2009. The film also earned him
the ire of the Moratti family and several warnings not to show the film. The dispute
was resolved with the decision by the Italian Data Protection Authority that the film
is “of national interest”. Since 2014 Mazzotta is the artistic director of the Life After
Oil International Film Festival held in Sardinia and now in its third year.

Il 12 dicembre 1961, con l' “Operazione Vijay” dell'esercito indiano, Goa fu
occupata ed annessa all'Unione Indiana e dopo 451 anni di colonizzazione da
parte dell'impero portoghese diventò indipendente il 19 Dicembre 1961.
È il 1954 e un italiano di nome Barone Ludovic Toeplitz arriva a Goa.
Con il sostegno finanziario di un intraprendente italiano, Alessandro Vassallo, è
alla ricerca di minerale di ferro per gli altiforni europei.
Toeplitz acquisisce la concessione mineraria Orasso Dongor a Nord di Goa e
avvia una nuova società, la Sesa Goa Scambi Eonomici Società Anonima (SESA),
controllata dall'IRI-Finsider a partire dal 1955.
Goa non è solo miniere. Anche la musica ha qui le sue radici e, inoltre, tra la fine
degli anni Sessanta e i primi Settanta Goa diventa la mecca degli hippie, restando
tale fino agli anni Ottanta. Anche oggi a Goa vive una comunità di musicisti, che
unisce alle sperimentazioni in ambito musicale l’interesse per lo yoga e l'uso di
droghe psichedeliche.
Il commercio di droga nello stato di Goa ha connessioni che riguardano i più alti
vertici della politica e delle forze dell'ordine locali, oltre a svariate organizzazioni
mafiose.
La maggior parte delle foreste dello Stato si trovano all'interno, nelle regioni
orientali di Goa, sulle pendici dei Western Ghats occidentali, riconosciuti come uno
dei 21 hotspot di biodiversità del mondo.
Molte specie animali hanno perso l'orientamento a causa delle numerose e illegali
estrazioni di minerali, mentre un intero ecosistema sta subendo danni irreversibili.
Massimiliano Mazzotta
Nato a Lecce il 27 Dicembre 1972, autodidatta, sin dall'età di 16 anni collabora con
fotografi affermati nel campo della moda e della pubblicità. Con Oil, il suo primo
lungometraggio, ha vinto il premio come miglior documentario italiano e la
menzione speciale di Legambiente al CinemAmbiente 2009. Con Oil Massimiliano
Mazzotta ha subìto due denunce da parte della famiglia Moratti, con le quali veniva
diffidato dal proiettare il film. Diffide risoltesi, comunque, in un niente di fatto visto
che il Garante della Privacy ha definito il film di “interesse nazionale”.
Dal 2014 è direttore artistico di LIFE AFTER OIL International Film Festival che si
svolge in Sardegna ed è giunto alla terza edizione.
