nel darti il benvenuto sulle nostre navi abbiamo il piacere d’informarti
circa le ultime novità del nostro Gruppo armatoriale.
Nel solo mese di novembre di quest’anno abbiamo dato vita a due
importanti iniziative. La prima è l’apertura di una nuova linea per Tangeri. E’ la prima volta che approdiamo in Marocco con le nostre navi
passeggeri ed abbiamo dedicato alla linea una delle nostre unità più
importanti, l’Ikarus Palace, in grado di trasportare in modo confortevole
ed economico passeggeri, auto, camper, caravan ed anche mezzi commerciali. Questo collegamento unisce settimanalmente Livorno a Tangeri,
facendo tappa intermedia a Valencia.
L’altra novità è proprio sulla Spagna: oltre ad offrire un collegamento
settimanale tra Livorno e Valencia, abbiamo recentemente rafforzato
il servizio dal porto labronico per Barcellona. Adesso sono quattro gli
approdi settimanali di questo collegamento che va ad aggiungersi agli
scali giornalieri tra Civitavecchia e la capitale catalana.
L’anno che si sta concludendo è stato molto importante anche sul versante dell’Adriatico. Il collegamento tra Ancona, Igoumenitsa e Patrasso,
gestito dalla controllata Minoan Lines, è adesso a pieno regime, potenziato con due cruise ferry, “Cruise Europa” e “Cruise Olympia”, i più
grandi, veloci e confortevoli del Mediterraneo.
Su ogni nostra nave troverai la massima accoglienza e soddisfazione a
tutte le tue esigenze: ristoranti, self-service, boutique, centri wellness,
sale giochi con slot machine e tavoli verdi. Ampie zone dedicate alla
lettura, ai bambini, bar, internet point e tanto altro renderanno sicuramente la tua traversata un buon inizio di vacanza o di lavoro nel luogo
di destinazione.
Oggi le navi con la livrea Grimaldi Lines solcano il Mediterraneo Occidentale collegando regolarmente l’Italia (Sicilia e Sardegna incluse) alla
Spagna, la Tunisia, Malta e il Marocco.
A tutti questi collegamenti vanno aggiunti quelli effettuati dalle nostre
controllate: la greca Minoan Lines dall’Adriatico verso la Grecia e dal
Pireo verso Creta mentre la finlandese Finnlines ti offre la possibilità
di visitare le parti più belle del Nord Europa e del Baltico con partenze
dalla Polonia, Germania, Finlandia, Lettonia, Svezia e Russia.
In ultimo, desideriamo rivolgere il saluto di tutto il nostro personale,
marittimo e amministrativo, ed un commosso ricordo al Presidente del
nostro Gruppo armatoriale, Cav. Lav. Guido Grimaldi, scomparso lo scorso 5 settembre. Per noi ha rappresentato il faro, la guida e noi faremo
tutto il possibile per far in modo che sia sempre orgoglioso di tutti noi.
While welcoming you on board our ships we wish to take this
opportunity to inform you about the latest innovations introduced by
our Group.
This month (November) alone, we have launched two important
initiatives. The first is the opening of a new maritime link to Tangiers.
This is the first time we call in Morocco with our passenger vessels,
and on this service we are deploying one of our most important
vessels, the m/v “Ikarus Palace”, which can carry passengers, cars,
camper vans, caravans and trucks very comfortably and economically. This new weekly link operates between Livorno and Tangiers
via Valencia.
The other news also concerns Spain: besides offering a weekly
service between Livorno and Valencia, we have recently upgraded
the link from the port of Livorno to Barcelona. Now this route has
four weekly calls, provided in addition to the daily service between
Civitavecchia and Barcelona.
The year that is drawing to a close has also been very important on
the Adriatic route. The connection between Ancona, Igoumenitsa
and Patras, operated by the subsidiary Minoan Lines, is now operating at full capacity, thanks to the deployment of the cruise ferries
Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia, namely the largest, fastest and
most comfortable cruise ferries in the Mediterranean.
On board all our vessels you will find hospitality and amenities satisfying all your needs and exceeding your expectations: à la carte and
self-service restaurants, boutiques, a wellness centre, video game
rooms with slot machines and gaming tables.
There are large reading areas, children’s facilities, bars, an Internet
point and a whole lot more that will ensure a great start to your
holiday or business trip.
Today, the vessels with the Grimaldi Lines livery sail the Western
Mediterranean providing regular links between mainland Italy, Sicily,
Sardinia, Spain, Tunisia, Malta and Morocco.
Then there are the links operated by our subsidiaries: Minoan Lines
from the Adriatic to Greece and from Piraeus to Crete, and Finnlines
giving you the opportunity to visit the most beautiful destinations in
Northern Europe and the Baltic with departures from Poland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Latvia and Russia.
Finally, we know that all the shipboard and shoreside personnel will
join me in expressing fond remembrance and paying tribute to the
Chairman of our Group Guido Grimaldi, who passed away on 5 September. He was our guiding light and we will do everything possible
to make sure that he will always be proud of us.

rimaldi Lines incrementa il servizio passeggeri e merci nel Mar
Mediterraneo con il suo primo collegamento settimanale per il Marocco,
sulla tratta Livorno-Valencia-Tangeri,
inaugurato il 20 novembre scorso.
La nave impiegata sul nuovo collegamento è il traghetto veloce “Ikarus
Palace”, un moderno ro-pax dotato di
200 cabine passeggeri – tra interne,
esterne e suite – ristorante e self service, piscina e solarium, spazio attrezzato per bambini, discoteca e slotmachine per il divertimento notturno.
La nave, lunga 200 metri e larga 26, è
in grado di viaggiare a una velocità di
26 nodi e garantisce, grazie ai numerosi servizi presenti a bordo, una
traversata nel massimo comfort sia
per i turisti in viaggio di piacere verso
l’affascinante Paese nordafricano, sia
per gli stessi cittadini marocchini che
si spostano verso Spagna e Italia e
viceversa. L’ ”Ikarus Palace” ha, inoltre, una capacità di carico di 2.130
metri lineari di merce rotabile e 110
automobili.
“Questo nuovo collegamento crea
un ponte marittimo tra Italia, Spagna
e Marocco, e nasce con l’obiettivo
di contribuire al rafforzamento delle
relazioni commerciali tra Nord Africa
e Mediterraneo Occidentale, offrendo
sia ai turisti sia alla grande comunità
di cittadini Marocchini residenti in Italia e Spagna una nuova opportunità di
viaggio verso questa parte del Maghreb”, sottolinea Emanuele Grimaldi,

at Morocco
rimaldi Lines has extended its maritime
services for passengers and freight in the
Mediterranean with its first link to Morocco, on
the Livorno-Valencia-Tangier route, launched on
20 November.
The vessel deployed on this new route is the
Ikarus Palace, a modern Ro-Pax ferry with 200
passenger cabins (oceanview, inside, suites),
à la carte and self-service restaurants, a swimming pool and solarium, children’s play area,
plus a disco and slot machines for evening
entertainment. The vessel, 200 metres in
length and 26 metres in breadth, has a service
speed of 26 knots and, thanks to the many
facilities on board, guarantees an enjoyable
voyage both for tourists and for Moroccans
travelling to and from Spain and Italy. The Ikarus Palace has a loading capacity of 2,130 lane
metres for rolling cargo as well as 110 cars.
“This new maritime service establishes a sea
link between Italy, Spain and Morocco, and is
intended to provide support for the expanding
trade relations between North Africa and the
Western Mediterranean while offering both
tourists and the large Moroccan communities
residing in Italy and Spain a new opportunity
to travel to this part of the Maghreb,” says

the Ikarus Palace we are not only offering a
quality service, but also making a major contribution to environmental sustainability and energy saving by shifting a considerable number of

Gruppo Grimaldi, ha recentemente potenziato il collegamento Livorno-Barcellona offrendo una quarta partenza settimanale da entrambi i porti. Alle attuali partenze
da Livorno a Barcellona il lunedì, mercoledì e sabato, si
aggiunge una partenza il giovedì. Dallo scalo catalano,
oltre alle partenze del martedì, giovedì e domenica, se ne
aggiunge un’altra il venerdì.
A servire gli scali addizionali del giovedì da Livorno e del
venerdì da Barcellona sarà il traghetto veloce “Ikarus Palace” mentre le altre partenze della settimana continueranno
ad essere effettuate con il traghetto veloce “Florencia”.
Grazie all’introduzione del nuovo traghetto, il potenziamento del servizio offerto da Grimaldi & Suardiaz Lines
si traduce in un aumento di oltre il 30% della capacità di
carico merci e di circa il 60% di quella passeggeri.
Tramite questa iniziativa si intende offrire un servizio
ancor più efficiente e regolare per i flussi crescenti di
merci e passeggeri tra Spagna e Italia. L’impiego del traghetto moderno "Ikarus Palace", che affianca il “Florencia”
nelle partenze addizionali da e per la Spagna, aumenta
notevolmente la capacità passeggeri e merci, garantendo
anche spazi pubblici maggiori all’interno della nave.

rimaldi & Suardiaz Lines, a company participated by the
Grimaldi Group, has recently boosted the Livorno-Barcelona
maritime link by offering a fourth weekly departure from both
ports. In addition to the existing departures from Livorno to Barcelona on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, there is now a
Thursday sailing. From Barcelona, in addition to the departures
on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, there is another sailing on
Fridays.
The additional calls on Thursdays and Fridays will be provided by
the cutting-edge ferry "Ikarus Palace" while the fast ferry "Florencia" will continue to be deployed for the other departures.
Thank to the introduction of the new ferry, the extended service
offered by Grimaldi & Suardiaz Lines means an increase of over
30% in cargo capacity and about 60% in passenger capacity.
Through this initiative the Group aims to offer an even more
efficient and frequent service for the increasing flows of cargo
and passengers between Spain and Italy. The deployment of the
Ikarus Palace alongside the Florencia enables greater passenger
and cargo capacity and there are even more public areas on the
new ship.

Con Grimaldi alla Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù

al 16 al 21 agosto 2011 si terrà a Madrid la Giornata
Mondiale della Gioventù, l'incontro internazionale di
giovani nato da un'intuizione di Papa Giovanni Paolo II e promosso dalla Chiesa Cattolica, che ha contato, nel suo decimo
incontro mondiale tenuto a Sydney nel 2008, circa mezzo
milione di giovani.
Grimaldi Lines contribuisce attivamente, organizzando il
viaggio di migliaia di giovani che parteciperanno all'evento,
utilizzando i collegamenti da Civitavecchia, Livorno, Porto
Torres per Barcellona, ed il nuovo servizio da Livorno per
Valencia.
La settimana madrilena prevede diversi eventi tra cui mostre,
concerti e momenti di preghiera; il Santo Padre trascorrerà,
assieme ai suoi giovani pellegrini, l'intera serata del venerdì.
Al termine della Messa, l’annuncio della città che ospiterà
l'incontro internazionale successivo.

born from an intuition of the late Pope John Paul II and promoted by the Catholic Church will be held in Madrid from the 16th
to the 21st of August 2011. In its 10th edition, held in Sydney in
2008, it registered about half a million young pilgrims from all over
the world.
Grimaldi Lines actively contributes, organising the transfer of thousands of youngsters which will partecipate to the event, through the
maritime services from Civitavecchia, Livorno, Porto Torres to Barcelona, and the new link from Livorno to Valencia.
The Spanish week includes several events such as exhibitions, concerts, and moments of prayer; the Holy Father will spend with the
young pilgrims the entire Friday evening. At the end of the mass,
the host city for the next international meeting will be announced.

edizione del Progetto “Alla scoperta del tuo paese” realizzato dal
Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca, il Ministero per
i Beni e le Attività Culturali e l’Associazione MECENATE ‘90. L’iniziativa
intende coinvolgere gli studenti nella
progettazione dei viaggi e contribuire
allo sviluppo di turismo consapevole,
accessibile e sostenibile, promuovendo gli scambi culturali attraverso
i viaggi di istruzione. Grimaldi Lines
partecipa attivamente all’iniziativa realizzando tariffe agevolate per le scuole
che aderiscono al progetto.

Lines contribuisce attivamente alla campagna monitoraggio dei cetacei nel
Mediterraneo centro-occidentale, mettendo a disposizione di ricercatori
e biologi marini il traghetto “Catania”, impiegato sulla rotta CivitavecchiaCatania. Sin dal primo imbarco, si è infatti registrato l’avvistamento di ben
6 specie di cetacei, tra cui il piccolo delfinide stenella striata, i delfinidi
della specie tursiope, un esemplare di capodoglio, oltre ad una trentina
di segnalazioni della tartaruga marina Caretta Caretta. Lo staff KETOS
reputa il traghetto "Catania" un’ottima piattaforma di osservazione, avendo
registrato in soli due mesi l’avvistamento di circa un migliaio di esemplari:
la grande ampiezza del ponte di comando e la sua notevole elevazione sul
livello del mare sono caratteristiche che giocano un ruolo fondamentale
sulla visibilità e che dunque favoriscono la possibilità di avvistamento a
360°.

hanks to the agreement ratified with the Department of Nature Protection of
ISPRA (Italian Institute for the Environmental Protection and Research), and
the Cultural Scientific Association “Ketos”, since last July Grimaldi Lines is actively
contributing to the monitoring of cetaceans in the central-western Mediterranean,
embarking researchers and marine biologists on the modern ferry "Catania",
deployed on the Catania-Civitavecchia route. Since the first shipment, sightings of
about 6 species of cetaceans were recorded, including stenella striata dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, a sample of sperm whale, as well as about thirty reports of sea turtle Caretta Caretta. The Ketos staff describes "Catania" as an excellent observation
platform, having recorded in just two months about a thousand specimens: the width
of the bridge and its high elevation above sea level are features playing a key role on
the visibility and therefore favour the possibility of 360 degrees sightings.

Concorso letterario "L' Italia e il Mare"
Literary competition “Italy and the Sea”
rimaldi Lines ha organizzato per il secondo anno di seguito, il Concorso
Letterario "L'Italia e il Mare", destinato agli studenti catalani della scuola
superiore. Il concorso, in collaborazione con la Generalitat de Catalunya, ha
l'obiettivo di promuovere e rafforzare la conoscenza della cultura catalana,
sarda e italiana, attraverso un racconto o poesia redatta dagli studenti. La
scelta della composizione letteraria vincitrice sarà comunicata durante l'ultimo
trimestre dell'anno 2010.

rimaldi Lines has organised for the second year in a row, the Literary Competition "Italy and the Sea," for the Catalan high school students. The competition,
in cooperation with the Generalitat de Catalunya, aims to promote and enhance the
knowledge of Catalan, Sardinian and Italian culture, using a story or poem written by
the students. The choice of the winner will be announced during the last quarter of
2010.

Tourism "Buoni Vacanze Italia", aiming at promoting and developing tourism that is accessible to everyone, was
extended for departures until the 20th of
December 2010. The discount offered
by Grimaldi Lines is 5%, applicable only

whole 2011.

delle navi attraccate nel Porto della città. Da tale accordo
è nato il programma "La Città galleggiante, il Trasporto
Marittimo Attuale", la cui attività consiste in un itinerario
guidato in alcune aree della nave, accompagnato da un’illustrazione della vita di bordo e dell'importanza del traffico marittimo negli scambi commerciali attuali. Nell'anno
scolastico 2009-2010, le navi hanno registrato 1.500 visitatori tra studenti della scuola media e superiore.

Roma become a training area for students. Thanks to the
agreement with the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, schools
can visit one of the vessels docked in the port of the city. This
agreement gave birth to the "The Floating City, the maritime
transport today" programme, whose activity consists in a guided tour in some areas of the vessel, accompanied by an illustration of maritime life and the importance of maritime trade.
In the 2009-2010 school year, the vessels recorded 1,500 visitors, both secondary and high school students.

f you stop and listen, the noise of the chips on
the table is just like the sound of pebbles tossed
on the beach by the swell. Crisp and clear. Smooth.
Hypnotic. There are more than eighty people playing with them in the Texas Hold’em tournament
on board the Cruise Roma. They’re all enthusiasts
of what has become the game of choice for poker
players worldwide, its popularity surging due to
exposure on TV and the Internet. Texas Hold’em
fever has also gripped Italy, with 400 million euros
in revenue and 30,000 tournaments held in 2009.
This theme cruise bound for Barcelona has attracted
a large number of guests, who are all keen to take
part in the games and events arranged on board. As
soon as the Cruise Roma sets sail, the Bar Centrale is
full of gaming fans mesmerised by the magical movements of the croupiers and dealers.
The first impression is that these card players on the
high seas speak some mysterious language: small
blind, big blind, all in, showdown. But, in actual fact,
the rules are quite simple: each player is dealt two
cards and there are five face-up community cards; all
entrants “buy-in” for a fixed amount and start with
the same number of chips. If you lose, you only lose
the “buy-in”. On the other hand, the winner gets the
whole prize pool.
While this variant retains the combinations and
excitement of traditional poker, Texas Hold’em players are a far cry from the stereotype of smoke-filled

is a sort of sport,” says tournament organizer Enzo
Guerra, whose son Maurizio is a professional poker
player and a member of the Sisal team, which represents Italy in international competitions. “You need
discipline, talent and, if you really want to break
the bank, you have to study hard: it’s more about
maths and strategy than luck.” Enzo says poker adds
a whole new dimension to cruising: “At the Texas
Hold’em table the time at sea passes much quicker.

You laugh and joke and meet people; it’s great fun

The poker players who fall head over heels for the
queen of hearts as the ship enters Spanish territorial
waters aren’t professional gamblers; here, you’re surrounded by unassuming university students, mothers
who’ve been introduced to the game and become
fans thanks to their grown-up children, husbands
and wives who play in pairs, groups of friends who
share the same passion. Some of the older participants have put their lucky charms on top of their chip
stacks, while many of the younger generation are
listening to their MP3 players: Mozart for maximum
concentration between hands, and Linkin Park for
raises.
The poker room is also a place where friendships and
romances begin, and people have stories to tell: on
this cruise we meet Michele and Gianluca, 25-yearold twins from Bari who became interested when
they watched poker on TV and ended up playing
online. And becoming champions in the process.
Then there’s Florinda, a dark-haired dealer in her
twenties who happens to be Gianluca’s girlfriend. “If
he wins the tournament,” she says, “he’s going to
buy me a ring when we get to Barcelona.” Donato,
65, is an entrepreneur: “Poker’s like a beautiful
woman”, he suggests. “You fall in love, you suffer,
but if you persevere, love conquers all in the end”.

A poker, lei, non ci ha mai giocato. Ma tra una
pagina, una chiacchiera e una puntatina al centro
estetico della Cruise Roma, non si perde una mossa
del torneo. È in crociera per seguire il figlio Ivan, 25
anni, che vuole diventare un giocatore professionista:
“Sarò una madre atipica, ma io lo incoraggio. Oggi
è tutto un azzardo, allora perché non puntare sul
poker? L’importante è giocare responsabilmente”.
E Ivan, in effetti, sembra avere la testa sulle spalle:
“Quando ho cominciato, ho perso per quattro volte
di fila. Alla quinta, mi sono chiuso in casa e mi sono
messo a studiare”. Ha comprato i libri scritti dai campioni americani, ha sperimentato i nuovi software
pensati appositamente per imparare a giocare, si
è fatto allenare da un coach. Tre mesi più tardi, è
tornato al tavolo e ha vinto 3.000 euro. “Il poker

Meanwhile, Maria Grazia’s hands are browsing
through the pages of a magazine on one of the
couches in the Bar Centrale. She’s never played poker
herself, but in addition to reading, chatting and having the occasional spa treatment, she’s also keeping
a close eye on the Texas Hold’em tournament. She’s
on the cruise together with her 25-year-old son Ivan,
who hopes to become a professional poker player: “I
may be an unusual mother, but I actually encourage
him. I mean, today everything’s a calculated risk, so
why not try poker? The important thing is to gamble
responsibly”. And Ivan certainly does seem to have
his head screwed on. He tells us, “When I first played
I lost four times in a row. After the fifth time I went
home and set about learning the basics and tips on
how to play successfully”. He bought books by American poker champions, studied odds and strategy
software tools, and was trained by a coach. Three
months later he was back at the poker table and won
3,000 euros. “Texas Hold’em is unusual because it’s
true meritocracy: luck has got little to do with it; if
you put in the effort, you’ll reap the rewards”. Ivan
dreams of one day playing in the World Series of
Poker in Las Vegas. As we approach Barcelona, riding
the waves and upping the ante, Ivan continues on his
winning ways.

e quinte d’un barocco struggente adornano un palcoscenico di grande suggestione: quello del teatro di Catania, la
seconda città siciliana svogliatamente sdraiata
su una fertilissima piana bagnata dal mar Jonio
e ai piedi del più alto vulcano d’Europa, l’Etna.
E’ complessa, antica e articolata la storia di questa città e del suo centro storico. Ed è soprattutto
straordinaria perché strettamente legata agli
umori del gigante inquieto che la sovrasta e che
nei secoli l'ha più volte sepolta di lava. Tuttavia
Catania è sempre risorta, s'è sempre reinventata,
anche dai rovinosi terremoti (si ricordi per tutti
quello del 1669 combinato a una furiosa eruzione) che l'avevano sbriciolata. Dopo quell’ultimo
terribile evento, la sua sistemazione urbanistica
è stata impostata dall'architetto Giovan Battista
Vaccarini e oggi è più o meno rimasta così, bella
e seducente.
Per visitare il suo cuore antico, proclamato
dall’UNESCO patrimonio dell’Umanità nel 2002,
i catanesi consigliano di girarvi a sera, subito
dopo il tramonto, perché la sua monumentalità,
tra il nero assoluto dei fiumi asciutti di lava che
serpeggiano qua e là, si esprime meglio con il
gioco delle luci e delle ombre.
Ma da dove cominciare? Qualsiasi guida turistica della città, dalla più didascalica alla più
approfondita, vi condurrà attraverso itinerari un
po' “ingessati” che prevedono un’esplorazione
dettagliata delle zone d’interesse storico per chi
ha molto tempo a disposizione.
In ogni caso, per farsi un’idea d’una città che
a ogni angolo può sorprendere, incantare ed
emozionare, si deve dare ascolto sempre a loro,
i catanesi, che vi suggeriranno di cominciare a
scoprire Catania da Piazza Duomo, realizzata
dopo un altro sisma che nel 1693 la mise in
ginocchio. Questa piazza, con una splendida cattedrale – che da sola meriterebbe un viaggio a sé

The high Baroque wings adorn the spectacular
monumental stage: we’re inside the theatre of
Catania, in Sicily’s second biggest city, which lies on
a fertile plain on the Ionian Sea at the foot of Mount
Etna, Europe’s largest volcano. Catania’s history is
complex, ancient and intriguing, much like the architecture of its old town. Above all, it is extraordinary
insofar as it has been shaped by a series of natural
disasters. Engulfed by lava and levelled repeatedly,
Catania has been rebuilt again and again. Most
notably, after the eruption of Etna in 1669 followed
by the monstrous earthquake that devastated the
whole of south-eastern Sicily in 1693, the swift
rebuilding was on a grand scale and the architect in
charge, Giovan Battista Vaccarini, recreated and unified the city, giving it a lofty noble air that remains
today.
According to the locals, the best time of day to see
the old quarter of Catania, which was declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, is dusk,
when the twilight enhances the characteristic pall of
the walls of dark volcanic stone.
Where’s the best place to begin our tour? Any
travel guide, no matter how brief or detailed, will
suggest a series of more or less fixed itineraries
taking in the main places of historical interest for
visitors who have time to spend in Catania.
The best way to appreciate the city, which contains
many surprising spots full of alluring grandeur, is to
follow the advice of the Catanesi themselves and
start from Piazza Duomo, rebuilt completely after
the quake of 1693. This is the main square, the site
of the splendid cathedral – itself well worth a visit –

an Egyptian obelisk on its back. Legend has it that

romana raffigurante un elefante nero poggiato su
un obelisco di fattura egizia con iscrizioni geroglifiche. Secondo la leggenda popolare quell’elefantino di pietra nera rappresenta il negromante
Eliodoro che i catanesi chiamano “’U Liotru”,
una sorta di vocabolo intraducibile che non esiste nella tradizione dialettale siciliana. Tuttavia
quell’elefante, simbolo di energia, memoria e
longevità, è emblematico della grande forza di
volontà dei catanesi che, flagellati da terremoti
ed eruzioni, hanno sempre sconfitto il dolore e la
distruzione ricostruendo la propria città e mantenendo vivi nella memoria gli avvenimenti storici.
Su Piazza Duomo si affaccia naturalmente la
splendida Cattedrale, una delle otto chiese cittadine dedicate a Sant’Agata, l’adorata e venerata
patrona della città. Fu fondata nell’undicesimo
secolo e ricostruita più volte, sia durante il regno
di Federico II, e poi ancora nel 1700 su progetto
del laborioso ed eclettico architetto Vaccarini.
All’interno, è custodita la tomba del grande compositore catanese Vincenzo Bellini.
Lasciando Piazza del Duomo, basterà imboccare
via San Calogero per farci condurre al Castello
Ursino, l’imponente costruzione edificata tra
il 1239 e il 1250 per volere dell’Imperatore
Federico II di Svevia. Allora il castello fu eretto
su una collina che dominava la città, forse un
po’ troppo vicino al mare. La colata lavica del
1669, che lo circondò e vi riempì parte del fossato, cambiò completamente il territorio, allontanandolo dal mare e facendogli perdere la sua
funzione strategica. Nel 1932 fu restaurato dal
Comune e da allora è sede del Museo Civico. Da
qui è facile raggiungere la settecentesca Porta
Garibaldi, costruita a strati di calcare bianco e
pietra lavica. La porta fu realizzata nel 1768 per
celebrare le nozze tra Ferdinando IV di Borbone
e Carolina d’Austria. Da questa porta converrà
seguire via Sant’Anna, dove è possibile visitare
la Casa-Museo di Giovanni Verga, e si giungerà
in via Vittorio Emanuele, la seconda strada
per importanza dopo la storica via Etnea. Sulla
vostra sinistra scorgerete i resti dell’anfiteatro

the monument in dialect as "U Liotru", which is an
allusion to the 8 th century heretic. In any case the
elephant symbolises strength, memory and longevity,
epitomising the incredible willpower that has enabled the people of Catania to survive, regroup and
rebuild in the face of a terrible sequence of natural
calamities, while at the same time honouring their
history and retaining their rich cultural heritage.
The Duomo is one of eight local churches dedicated
to Sant’Agata, Catania’s much venerated patron
saint. The cathedral was originally founded in the
11th century, rebuilt during the reign of Frederick
II of Swabia, and then almost entirely remodelled
once again in the 18 th century by the eclectic architect Vaccarini. The interior houses the tomb of the
great Catania-born composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Leaving Piazza del Duomo by Via San Calogero, you
come to the Castello Ursino, erected between 1239
and 1250 and once the proud fortress of the Holy
Roman Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Originally
the castle stood on a rocky cliff but following the
1669 eruption, which reclaimed this entire area from
the sea depriving the citadel of its strategic function,
all that remains is the blackened keep. In 1932 the
fortress was renovated by the Municipality and has
since been used to house the Museo Civico. From
here, it’s easy to get to the 18th century Porta
Garibaldi, built in layers of white limestone and
black volcanic rock. The gate was erected in 1768
to celebrate the marriage between Ferdinand IV of
Bourbon and Maria Carolina of Austria. The best
route from here is along Via Sant’Anna, where you
can visit the former home of Giovanni Verga (now
a museum), and then into Via Vittorio Emanuele,
Catania’s second most important thoroughfare
after Via Etnea. On your left you’ll see the sunken
remains of the city’s Anfiteatro Romano (second in
size only to the Coliseum in Rome). The original site
was far more extensive and in its heyday the amphitheatre could hold many thousands of spectators.
Still today, from above you can see the seating quite
clearly and get an idea of how imposing it must have
been. Also visible among the maze of ruins is part

l’antica acropoli cittadina, un po’ il fiore all’occhiello dell’arte barocca e certamente tra le strade più caratteristiche del centro storico. Pensate
che nello spazio di circa 200 metri troveremo

Giuliano, considerata uno dei più begli esempi

Not far from here is Via Crociferi, which constitutes

impatto ed emozionarvi a ogni sguardo. Il nuovo Museo Nazionale delle
Arti del XXI secolo è questo prima di
tutto: una spettacolare opera architettonica. La candida struttura di vetro e
cemento, eretta nel quartiere Flaminio
a poche centinaia di metri dall'Auditorium Parco della Musica firmato
da Renzo Piano, è opera di un altro
architetto fra i più quotati al mondo,
l'anglo-irachena Zaha Hadid. Il suo
progetto è stato scelto tra 273 proposte
giunte in risposta al bando di concorso
internazionale promosso dal Ministero
dei Beni Culturali nel 1998.
L'inaugurazione alla fine di maggio,
dopo 6 anni di lavori e 150 milioni
di spesa, per una struttura di 27 mila
metri quadrati.
Dentro, il concetto di spazio è rivoluzionato: abolite le sale, scomparse le

people who see it is simply to marvel.
The new Maxxi, or National Museum of
Arts of the XXI century, is quite simply
a stunning architectural feat. The vast
glass and concrete building, located in
the Flaminio area not far from Renzo
Piano’s Music Auditorium, is the work of
the world renowned Iraqi-born British
architect Zaha Hadid. Hers was the
winning entry among the 273 projects
submitted in an international design
competition held by the Italian Ministry
for Cultural Affairs in 1998.
The 27,000 m2 museum opened at the
end of May this year, following 6 years of
building at a cost of 150 million euros.
Inside, the spatial concept is visionary:
there are no permanent rooms, but the
design allows for walls and chambers to
be inserted. Made of overlaid strips, this
site is less a unified lone structure than
a convergence of long, shiny, serpentine
modules – a bit like a space-age highway
interchange. The totality is compelling
and evokes a powerful urge to explore
and discover.
Hadid’s composition consists of bending
oblong tubes, overlapping, intersecting
and piling over each other. There is an
interweaving of internal and external, of
piazza, atrium and galleries. The latter
are themselves works of frozen motion.
They are linear and without columns.
The walls incline and curve.
Natural light is filtered by a sophisticated modular system with constant
brightness and protection from sunlight.

The imagery is of flow and movement,
the key concept being a “laboratory
that’s always open to experimentation,
study, research and the display of artistic
contents reflecting our times.” Maxxi’s
first temporary exhibits – grouped
around the show entitled SPAZIO –
include works by William Kentridge,
Anish Kapoor, Fabio Mauri, Mario Mertz
and Francesco Vezzoli.
One highlight is Kutlung Ataman’s Mesopotamian Dramaturgies, featuring video
installations exploring the relationship
between East and West. Another is the
architecture show From Rationalism
to the Informal, with Luigi Moretti’s
avant-garde models, drawings and photographs.
Maxxi is actually two museums rolled
into one with visual art and architecture
displayed together in a sort of creative
interaction, and the venue conceived as
a great Campus of Culture. The intention is to establish the institution not
just as a showcase but also as an international venue for conferences, workshops, performances and educational
programmes.
It’s an ambitious project and one that
is targeted at the younger generations,
both as visitors and also as producers
of fresh artistic output. “Maxxi will be
a melting pot for creative trends, talents and experience,” says Foundation
Board Member Roberto Grossi. “This
will include cutting-edge performances
of music, cinema, dance and fashion,
enhancing the museum’s high quality cultural offer and comprising joint ventures
with the nearby Auditorium.”
If the early signs are anything to go by,
this cultural mission is heading for success: the museum attracted 74,000 visitors and sold almost 6,000 catalogues in

The exhibition dealing with the theme of

The building is located in a quietish district with a lot of barracks, both active

aim was to bring in the urban energy

wanted to create a modern interpretation of the many layers of history out of
which Rome is built.
So while the Eternal City is mostly
quite happy with the ancient wonders
it already has, this does not prevent it
from proudly embracing the future in
this spectacular new building where the
boundaries between exhibitions and
between disciplines are deliberately
blurred.

l “Barrio Chino”: così gli abitanti di Barcellona hanno
chiamato per cinquant'anni questa zona della città.
“Chino”, perché i suoi vicoli disordinati sono stati
fino all'ultimo decennio del secolo scorso la nuova patria
di migliaia di immigrati asiatici. Indiani soprattutto. Ma
anche cingalesi, pakistani, cinesi. Loro, fin dagli anni
Trenta, sono stati i veri padroni di casa in questo misterioso fazzoletto di città nascosto fra Las Ramblas e il porto.
Prima dell'arrivo, dopo gli anni Settanta, degli arabi, oggi
la comunità più numerosa di un quartiere che gli anziani
continuano a considerare maledetto. Zona di ladri, prostitute e diseredati. Di taverne da cui da sempre è meglio girare
alla larga. Zona di toreri caduti in disgrazia, artisti falliti
ed ex ballerine di locali notturni. Di alcol che scorre a
fiumi, risse in strada e retate della Guardia Civil.
Tutto vero, fino a quindici anni fa. Quando è iniziata una
delle più imponenti opere di recupero urbanistico che l'Europa mediterranea abbia mai conosciuto. E il Barrio Chino
è diventato per tutti il Barrio Raval. Demolire i palazzi
pericolanti e ripulire le strade dalla malavita: questi i
primi obiettivi del governo. Raggiunti i quali, è stato tutto
più facile.
Oggi il Raval è senza dubbio il quartiere più autentico di
Barcellona. Non il più bello, né il più sicuro: furti e scippi
sono un fenomeno ancora presente, ma non al punto da

arrio Chino” (Chinatown) was the name of this district of
Barcelona for fifty years. Until the last decade of last century its narrow, dark streets were home to thousands of Asian
immigrants: Indians above all, but also Sri Lankans, Pakistanis
and Chinese. Starting in the 1930s, they took up residence in
this tiny corner of the city hemmed in between Las Ramblas
and the port, turning it into what many consider to be Europe’s
most ethnically and culturally diverse urban area. After the
1970s there was an influx of Arabs, now the largest ethnic
group, further enhancing the multicultural mix of a neighbourhood that continues, to some extent, to have a reputation as a
seedy, inner city slum home to thieves, prostitution and poverty.
A district full of dives with dubious reputations frequented by
former bullfighters, artists and nightclub entertainers who’ve
all seen better days. An area known for heavy drinking, street
fighting and round-ups by the Guardia Civil.
All true, until 15 years ago, when one of Mediterranean
Europe’s most far-reaching urban renewal projects was
launched here. And the Barrio Chino turned into the Barrio
Raval. The initial objectives of the redevelopment programme
were to bulldoze the dank apartment blocks, reduce petty
crime and clean up the roughest parts of the district. Once
this had been done, the transformation of the area was well
underway.
Today, El Raval is not only a suburb of Barcelona – it is considered by many to be the real Barcelona. It’s not the prettiest

sociale. E c'è di più. Nessuno può dire
che si tratti di leggenda o verità, ma in
molti a Barcellona sono convinti che

Leopoldo is the district’s gastronomic
mecca”, wrote Montalban (who was
particularly partial to the meatballs,
fish meatballs and pig’s trotters with
mushrooms – the best dishes on the
menu) in his novel Stories of Fathers and
children. Of course much has changed
at Casa Leopoldo since it was founded
in 1929 by Gil Leopoldo and since the
days of Montalban. Nevertheless, his
beloved meatballs are still served and
the restaurant is exactly the same. The
prices have inevitably risen – so much so,
that it’s common to come across critical
reviews online written by tourists who
have eaten there and been disappointed.
In any case the “Casa Leopoldo experience” is well worth the visit, and not just
for the food.
Another admirer of the decadent beauty
of the Barrio Raval is Juan Marsé, one of
the so-called “50s Generation” novelists
and a leading exponent of social realism.
And the endorsements don’t end there.
Nobody knows whether it’s just an urban
legend, but there are many people in
Barcelona who are sure that King Juan
Carlos, who visited the city recently, was
so impressed by the renaissance of the
Barrio Raval that he asked the government to adopt the same urban renewal
model for some of the most rundown
parts of Madrid. It is believed that
nothing came of it because of the fierce
rivalry between the two Spanish cities.
“Madrid is too snobbish,” the Catalans say,
“to admit that they’re behind Barcelona.”
This too is what gives the Barrio Raval its
unique appeal. An area of striking contrasts and contradictions, but one that
visitors are always reluctant to leave, and
not without making a promise: “One day
we’ll be back.”

eccato per chi non l’ha conosciuta prima. Non diremo tanto,
basterebbe essere stati qui 15 anni fa, persino dieci. Perché
è vero che, se Valencia è oggi una città che ti stupisce, ti
sorprende, ti dà quasi un senso di vertigine per le sue forme avveniristiche, l’evoluzione costante del suo tessuto urbano, e quel curioso
aspetto di metropoli che ha assunto pur essendo una città di medie
dimensioni, ancor di più resta impressionato chi è stato testimone
della sua trasformazione radicale. Se, prima, il suo era il più classico dei centri storici, con l’antica Cattedrale al cui interno è conservato quello che, secondo la tradizione, sarebbe nientemeno che
il Santo Graal, ovvero il calice utilizzato da Gesù Cristo nel corso
dell’Ultima Cena, oggi il principale motivo di richiamo per milioni
di turisti è tutt’altro, molto più “pagano” ma incredibilmente spettacolare: la Ciutat de les Arts y de les Ciències, opera di un figlio di
questa terra, Santiago Calatrava, uno degli architetti contemporanei
più famosi nel mondo. E qui non si tratta di un monumento, di un
edificio, di un’opera da ammirare distrattamente per poi andare
avanti, passare ad altro. Basti pensare che questo complesso di
costruzioni dalle forme sinuose, immerso in straordinaria armonia
tra vecchi quartieri e nuovi centri commerciali, tra lunghi viali ed
ampi giardini, si estende nientemeno che lungo due chilometri, in
quello che un tempo era il letto del Turia. Idea geniale quella di
deviare, negli anni Ottanta, il corso del fiume. Perché, da allora, dove scorrevano le acque ha preso forma un gradevolissimo, e
sterminato, parco urbano. E poi, appunto, perché si è liberato lo
spazio per dare vita al progetto che ha cambiato il volto della città.
Dal Palazzo delle Arti, dedicato alla programmazione operistica,
all’Oceanografic, il maggior acquario d’Europa con 500 specie
marine. Dal Museo delle Scienze (un centro innovativo in campo
scientifico, organizzato in modo interattivo) all’Hemisféric, che ospita il planetario, un cine Imax e proiezioni digitali. Dall’Agora, uno
spazio multifunzionale destinato a competizioni sportive e concerti
(l’ultimo ad essere inaugurato, appena un anno fa) per finire con il
Puente de l’Assut de l’Or.

that long ago either – as recently as 15 or even 10
years ago would be sufficient to appreciate the transformation. For while it’s true that, today, Valencia is an
amazing place with sweeping structural architecture
and ceaseless development that has turned it into a
small-scale metropolis, its impact is even more impressive on those who have actually seen the changes take
place and witnessed this example of urban renewal at
its very best. In the past, the focus of attention was
the old medieval city centre with the historic cathedral
that reputedly houses the original Holy Grail, namely
the stone chalice used by Christ at the Last Supper,
whereas now the main attraction for the millions of
tourists who flock here is far more “profane” but still
incredibly spectacular: we’re talking about the otherworldly Ciutat de les Arts i de les Ciències, designed by
Santiago Calatrava, who is one of the world’s leading
architects and one of the city’s favourite sons. This
is not just another monument, another building to
be admired fleetingly before hurrying on to the next
sight on your itinerary. No, this is a visual playground
of repeated futuristic shapes reflected in water, part
of a grand enterprise that has led to the creation
of a whole new Valencia, with walkways, ponds and
sculpture gardens extending for some two kilometres
along what was the drained Turia riverbed. Back in the
1980s, the ingenious idea of diverting the river south
to the sea enabled the city to reclaim a large swath of
land that is the site of the local redevelopment plan
that has changed the face of Valencia. From the Palau
de les Arts performing arts centre to the Oceanografic,
Europe’s largest aquarium with 500 different marine
species. From the innovative, interactive Science

Ecco, forse la Valencia che cambia la
potrete percepire in tutta la sua forza
dirompente se provate ad attraversare
a piedi questa straordinaria opera di
ingegneria civile, anch’essa frutto del
genio di Calatrava. Ventinove possenti
cavi inclinati che reggono un altissimo
pilone centrale di 125 metri. Arrivate
a metà del ponte e vedrete, dal basso,
il nuovo tetto della città: un’imponente
colonna che si potrà scorgere persino
a chilometri di distanza, e che ha
soppiantato in altezza la storica torre
del Miguelete attigua alla Cattedrale,
rimasta a presidio dell’incantevole
centro storico.
Ma la Città delle Arti e delle Scienze – al di là del suo indiscutibile
valore architettonico e dell’innegabile
impulso alla cultura che ha fornito
alla terza città spagnola – ha anche
un altro merito innegabile: quello di
aver avvicinato notevolmente Valencia
al mare. Il porto, e la spiaggia della
Malvarrosa, in fondo non distavano
più di quattro chilometri dal centro
urbano. Ma la vera, e inconsueta,
caratteristica di Valencia è sempre
stata – storicamente – proprio quella
di dare le spalle al mare, di guardare
più verso la campagna, verso la terraferma, quasi ignorando la straordinaria risorsa che deriva dalla prossimità
al Mediterraneo.
Ora non è più così. Nuovi quartieri, moderni e funzionali, sono sorti,
coprendo uno spazio che sembrava
quasi destinato a restare terra di nessuno. E, grazie anche alla America’s
Cup di vela organizzata nel 2007,
ecco che la città si è riconciliata con
il grande specchio d’acqua che ha di
fronte. Anche qui, vale la pena ricordare come un vecchio porto degradato
e semi-abbandonato, sia stato trasformato in una struttura moderna e razionale, dominata dallo splendido edificio
Veles e Vents, realizzato per l’occasione dall’architetto David Chipperfield.

old walled town.
Not only has Calatrava’s City of Arts
and Sciences redefined Valencia, turning
Spain’s third largest city into a veritable cultural capital, but it also has the
undoubted merit of acting as a link
between the old Valencia and the harbour area. The port and Malvarrosa
beach are only four kilometres away
from the city centre, yet the latter always
tended to turn its back on the sea, to
look towards the hinterland, almost
ignoring the extraordinary resource
constituted by its close proximity to the
Mediterranean.
Not any longer. So many of these dockland redevelopments elsewhere are
detached from the parent city, isolated
by derelict interstitial space that is neither
city nor marina. The Ciutat de les Arts
i de les Ciències, is using up this space.
And this “reclaiming” of the sea was also
helped when Valencia hosted the America’s Cup in 2007. On the waterfront, the
main landmark building is the splendid
Veles e Vents, specially designed by the
architect David Chipperfield to act as the
hospitality venue for the America’s Cup
teams and sponsors.

entre Roma vive nell’attesa di poter ospitare i Giochi Olimpici del 2020, per i viaggiatori che ancora
oggi varcano il recinto sacro dell’antica Olimpia,
sembrano riecheggiare i magici versi di Pindaro: “Preziosa
è l’acqua, brilla l’oro come fuoco nella notte, più luminoso di
ogni astro splende nel cielo il sole. O mio cuore, se i giochi
vuoi cantare allora scegli quelli di Olimpia, più splendidi di
tutti gli altri giochi”.
Ma, se pure sappiamo con certezza che la nascita dei giochi
olimpici, ai quali i re pergameni contribuivano con generose
offerte, prese il via dall’antica città del Peloponneso, cosa
conosciamo realmente di quell’epoca arcaica? Senza nulla
togliere al culto dell’antica città greca dove si svolsero i primi
giochi nel 776 a.C, vediamo di squarciare qualche velo sulle
origini di questi giochi.
Cominciando col dire che il moderno spirito di Olimpia,
basato su un ideale di lealtà sportiva e cavalleresca “l’importante non è vincere ma partecipare”, non fu che una geniale
trovata tardo-romantica di fine ‘800 del barone Pierre De
Coubertin per esaltare lo sport inteso non più come combattimento estremo (oggi diremmo “off limits” come quelli che si
svolgevano al Colosseo) ma come un gioco di squadra, aperto
a tutti (ma le donne dovranno aspettare molto tempo per
parteciparvi), e con l’obiettivo del miglioramento continuo del
primato precedente. In realtà, nell’antica città del Peloponneso le gare rappresentavano l’apoteosi del combattimento e
gli atleti non sapevano nemmeno dove fosse di casa lo sport.
Le gare contro l’avversario, avevano un carattere tragico (si
pregava “o per la corona o la morte”), mentre i cosiddetti
“agoni panellenici” rappresentavano una “tregua sacra” tra
un combattimento e l’altro. Una pausa che serviva per curare
i feriti e celebrare i defunti assurti al rango di eroi come nei
versi celebrati nell’Iliade e nell’Odissea.
Le Olimpiadi, come le altre grandi gare che coinvolgevano
tutte le città greche, non rappresentavano infatti che un’evoluzione degli antichi culti funerari dedicati ai personaggi
assurti al rango di eroi. Secondo la tradizione, a Olimpia era
morto Pelope, l’eroe che aveva conquistato la bella Ippoda-

of Pindar: “Water is the finest of all, while gold, like a blazing

strength, seek no radiant star whose beams have keener power
to warm, in all the wastes of upper air, than the sun’s beams,
nor let us sing a place of games to surpass the Olympian.”
Now while it is historical fact that the ancient Olympic Games,
which were organised partly by means of the generous offerings of the Pergamon kings, were first held on this site in the
Peloponnese in 776 BC, how much do we actually know about
the earliest Olympiads?
Perhaps it’s best to start by saying that the modern idea of the
Olympic spirit, the ideals of fair play, athletic chivalry and the
philosophy that “the most important thing is not winning but
taking part” are just that – modern! The man considered the
father of the modern Games is Baron Pierre De Coubertin,
who romanticised ancient Greece and revived the Olympics at
the end of the 19th century. His idealised vision was based on
sport as democratic, with competition between teams open
to all amateurs (though it would be many years before women
were allowed to compete), and the goal of continuously setting
new records. In contrast, at the first Olympic Games in ancient
Greece the contests could be described as ritual warfare where
each hero tries to defeat a worthy opponent and death is
under human control (such was the pressure to win that athletes actually prayed for “either victory or death”), while the
so-called “Pan-Hellenic agones” (games) constituted a “sacred
truce” among all the Greek city-states. The outcome of these
shows was sometimes purposeful submission to death, with
funeral tributes to honour the dead warriors celebrated in the
verses of the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Indeed, the ancient Olympics began as a celebration of death,
like other funeral games and gladiatorial contests in antiquity, as
a renewal and affirmation of life to compensate for the loss of
a warrior. According to the mythological explanations, Olympia

Ad Olimpia ci si andava per sconfiggere gli avversari oltre
che sul terreno militare, anche su quello agonistico. Ed
anche se Olimpia poteva costituire un “meeting point” per
tentare di arginare i conflitti, non esistevano gli ideali di
“fratellanza” sportiva tipici delle olimpiadi moderne. Per
gli atleti greci come per i romani la guerra era un evento
normale connaturato all’uomo, dove non c’era posto per la
“pietas”. Basti ricordare l’analogo aforisma “mors tua, vita
mea” dei gladiatori romani o la decapitazione che attendeva
i perdenti delle tribù Maya nel gioco della pelota. Anche ad
Olimpia c’era un solo vincitore superstite, unico, splendente
come un dio sopra la massa anonima dei perdenti, condannati all’oblio senza secondi o terzi posti da premiare. Ogni
gara doveva indicare il solo vittorioso il cui nome sarebbe
stato ricordato ad eterna gloria. Infatti, ad essere tramandati
sono i nomi di quasi tutti i vincitori a cominciare da Corebo
di Elide che vinse nel 776 a.C. la gara dello Stadio per fini-

to mention sporting ideals.
At the ancient games in Olympia the athletic contests were
largely an extension of the military arts. The games were also
used to help solve the constant civil wars among the Greek
city-states. Like their ancient Roman counterparts, Greek athletes viewed warfare as a normal human activity, where there
was no room for “pietas”. Or, to put it in the words of the
Roman gladiators, “mors tua, vita mea” (your death, my life).
Another example is the Mayan ballgame of “pelota”, in which
the losing team was beheaded in a sacrifice to the gods. At
Olympia too, there was only one winner in each event, who
was hailed like a deity, while the losers were all consigned to
oblivion. There were no silver or bronze medallists. The victors
were honoured and rewarded with eternal glory. Indeed, there
are records of the names of almost all the winners, starting
with Koroibos of Elis, the very first Olympic champion, who

pugilato. Gli atleti vittoriosi ottenevano di essere ricordati
con statue, canti, stele marmoree, o sedere ai primi posti
nel teatro a fianco dei potenti. Per gli spartani si aggiungeva
l’onore di poter combattere in prima linea a fianco del re.
Non si trattava di riconoscimenti economici anche perché gli
atleti appartenevano alla classe aristocratica. Cosa spingeva
allora gli agonisti ad affrontare prove così dure? In primis
il terrore dell’oblio al quale erano condannati i perdenti. Al
contrario, l’aver compiuto un’impresa eccezionale primeggiando su tutti rappresentava una sfida alla morte che consentiva di entrare in una sorta di Pantheon. La storia sacra di
Olimpia inizia in un’epoca molto più antica, attorno al 2000
a.C. quando iniziarono gli insediamenti sul monte Kronion,
un luogo sacro, dove i Greci venivano da ogni città per mettere alla prova la loro abilità atletica.
Ma vediamo alcune curiosità storiche. Cominciando col
dire che nel 1896 ad Atene quando Re Giorgio I di Grecia
dichiarò aperta la prima Olimpiade dell’era moderna, le
discipline sportive erano soltanto 9 ed i titoli in palio appena
43. Il decimo sport era il canottaggio ma le gare andarono
in fumo a causa di una violenta tempesta. Nel corso degli
anni, il tabellone ha continuato ad ingrandirsi comprendendo
il calcio femminile, il beach volley, la mountain bike fino
al softball. Ma c’è un’altra curiosità importante: il barone
De Coubertin che pure aveva esaltato la partecipazione alle
gare sportive come il massimo della vita, era noto per essere
un accanito antifemminista, e non si stancava di ricordare
che nell’antichità non solo era interdetta la partecipazione ai
giochi del gentil sesso, ma le donne non potevano neppure
entrare negli Stadi.
Nonostante la sua accanita opposizione, l’esordio delle donne
avvenne lo stesso ad Amsterdam nel 1928. Di acqua sotto i
ponti ne era passata da quando Pindaro, poeta dei campioni
antichi, aveva cantato le sue odi a Ierone, re di Siracusa,
quale vincitore della corsa a cavallo nel 470 a.C.

event of 385 BC. Statues of the victors were erected. Parades
with chariots, songs and poems written in their honour were
given in their hometowns. Other special privileges awarded to
the athletes were choice seats at all public spectacles. Spartan
athletes had the additional honour of being allowed to fight in
the front line alongside the king. There were no cash rewards
because the ancient athletes were nobles. So what made them
compete in such gruelling contests? First and foremost, the fear
of being forgotten forever like the losers. The honour of winning, on the other hand, was so great that it was worth challenging death in order to achieve immortality by entering what
was virtually a sort of Pantheon. The origins of Olympia itself
date back much further, to around 2000 BC, when the first
settlements were built on Mount Kronion, a sacred site named
after a deity; this place would attract athletes from all over
Greece and beyond.
Turning to the modern Olympics, it’s interesting to note that
when the Games were first revived in Athens in 1896, there
were only 43 events in 9 sports. A tenth – canoeing – should
also have been contested but the race was abandoned because
of a violent storm. Over the decades, many new sports have
been added including women’s soccer, beach volley, mountain
biking and softball. Another point that shouldn’t be overlooked
is that, in spite of all his high ideals, Baron De Coubertin did
not approve of women’s participation in sport and never tired
of reminding his critics that in antiquity, not only were women
barred from competition, but they weren’t even allowed to
attend the events.
Despite De Coubertin’s firm opposition, women’s events were
eventually included in the Olympic Games programme starting
in Amsterdam in 1928. A lot of water had passed under the
bridge since the time of Pindar, the poet of major athletic festivals, and his ode to Hieron, the king of Syracuse, winner of the
horse race in 470 BC.

He is best remembered for the Cappella
Sansevero, a chapel that is now a private
museum, which reflects his eclectic personality, his vast general knowledge and his
mysterious scientific experiments.
This Neapolitan monument is a veritable
tribute to Baroque ar t and 18 th century
pomp, designed down to the very last
detail so as to glorify the memory of the
Sangro dynasty. It is the work of great
ar tists, who carried out the instructions
they were given according to a precise
iconographic project, full details of which were known to
Raimondo and to him alone. The end result is a real gem in
the old town of Naples, which attracts visitors and tourists
from all over the world. The decoration is unique, the main
attraction and the centrepiece being the Veiled Christ, which
was carved by Giuseppe Sanmar tino in 1753. But the chapel
as a whole is enchanting insofar as it truly captures the will
of Raimondo de Sangro, Prince VII of Sansevero, even more

tanto incisero nel suo essere. Mistero che si rinnova
nel monumento, dove si avverte prepotente la presenza del
deus ex machina, che commissionò ogni opera, imponendo
personalità e tecnica agli artisti, entrando spesso in merito
anche alla scelta dei materiali da utilizzare, come nel caso
della volta.
La gloria del Paradiso, di Francesco Maria Russo, una delle
prime opere realizzate per la cappella, con colori di invenzione dello stesso principe, detti oloidrici, per la loro formula
a base di olio e di acqua e ancora oggi brillanti e vivi. O la
grande lastra marmorea posta sulla sua tomba, dove l’elogio
funebre, è realizzato con un procedimento a base di solventi
chimici ideato dal principe stesso. Come anche il pavimento
a labirinto, distrutto alla fine del XIX sec., e visibile oggi
solo nel passetto antistante la tomba di Raimondo di Sangro.
Ed ancora affascina la Cavea sotterranea, dove sono collocati gli scheletri, o macchine anatomiche, con tutto il sistema
