Matteo Boato lavora a Trento. Il suo operare si arricchisce di esperienze espositive europee (Barcellona, Siviglia, Tarragona, Londra, Edimburgo, Glasgow, Berlino, Belfast, S. Andrews, Parigi, Dresda, Sonthoven, Groeningen) e lunghi periodi di soggiorno all’estero, che lo hanno indubbiamente stimolato nella sua formazione artistica. Allo stesso tempo, Boato è profondamente legato al territorio trentino dove è nato e al territorio italiano più in generale; molte sue opere affrontano il tema della città, del paesaggio urbano e rurale, della terra, sempre in stretto rapporto con l’uomo che la abita. Le persone e le relazioni umane sono il secondo grande bacino da cui l’artista attinge a piene mani. Mi auguro che questa mostra possa essere uno stimolo, sia per l’artista che per la nostra terra e possa essere apprezzata da appassionati e visitatori. Franco Panizza Assessore alla Cultura Rapporti europei e Cooperazione della Provincia autonoma di Trento Alessandro Branz Assessore alla cultura del Comune di Sanzeno ASSESSORE ALLA CULTURA ALESSANDRO BRANZ Sono ormai alcuni anni che Casa de Gentili a Sanzeno si sta valorizzando come luogo particolarmente ambito per l’esposizione di mostre e personali di artisti afferenti alla realtà trentina. E’ indubbio infatti che la collocazione strategica del palazzo, vera e propria “porta d’ingresso” all’Alta Valle di Non e chiave di passaggio per chi si reca al vicino Santuario di S. Romedio, ma anche la sontuosità dell’edificio, caratterizzato dalla presenza di sale ampie e luminose, siano motivi più che plausibili per spiegare l’interesse che i nostri artisti provano per questa residenza, in grado di mantenere negli anni tutto il suo fascino, anche in virtù di un restauro conservativo di ottima fattura. Del resto, si è potuto verificare dalle mostre più recenti, come l’antichità del palazzo non stoni per nulla con la modernità delle opere esposte: si tratti di paesaggistica classica, come di arte contemporanea, l’effetto è quello di un combinarsi fruttuoso di stili e linguaggi. È quindi con questo spirito e coerentemente con questo filone di pensiero ed azione, che il Comune di Sanzeno ha promosso per l’estate 2010 la personale/ antologica di un artista certamente giovane, ma già affermato e conosciuto, come Matteo Boato. Infatti la sua pittura molto singolare, attratta da tutto ciò che l’uomo e la natura riescono a concepire di più suggestivo (dalle case ai centri storici con le loro piazze, dai masi ai paesaggi agresti, dai boschi agli animali, fino alla fisicità stilizzata nei corpi umani), non solo desta interesse in sé, ma si concilia molto bene con la struttura architettonica del palazzo e dei suoi interni. È soprattutto l’interpretazione che Matteo Boato ci offre dei soggetti che ritrae, valorizzata dall’uso di colori molto intensi, a trovare nelle sale espositive un habitat quasi “naturale”: come se la vitalità “moderna” della pittura di Boato riuscisse a valorizzare la maestosità “centenaria” delle pareti e degli stucchi. L’eco culturale delle sue opere varca i confini della regione, per tracciare in modo ardimentoso un percorso di assoluta originalità, lontano da indulgenze verso inclinazioni effimere della moda. È un pittore sognante e visionario. I suoi dipinti prendono forma come racconti, nel fraseggio di squillanti tonalità cromatiche, da colpi di pennello decisi e dalla consapevolezza convinta di un mestiere che consente di tradurre le immagini dal campo reale al processo pittorico. Sotto questo punto di vista, la lettura delle sue opere è anzitutto quella di visioni oniriche, vissute con passione a prescindere dal pensiero, che si tratti di rielaborare figurazioni architettoniche, di luoghi a lui cari -come per esempio le sue “case danzanti”- oppure semplicemente delle sue bambine Matilda e Beatrice. Boato predilige lo sfruttare appieno il linguaggio della narrativa pittorica, ben consapevole, non tanto di una vaga imitazione dell’immagine reale, bensì della creazione inedita d’inesprimibili collegamenti tra gli oggetti. Il suo linguaggio descrittivo è stracolmo di oggettività, in esso ogni elemento diviene oggetto: cose, movimenti, sentimenti, atmosfere. La descrizione stessa di sensazioni è oggettivata, in quanto connessa strettamente agli oggetti. Il mondo oggettuale di Matteo Boato nasce da sensazioni primigenie, da proposte utopiche di miglioramento della qualità effettiva della vita, in una visione esistenziale attenta a tutti gli esseri animati e non, alle cose, agli oggetti. È la ragione a muovere le sue immagini, più che non la passione o il desiderio. Una tensione nel rapporto tra i particolari pittorici e quelli grafici governa i suoi lavori, dove le pennellate, dominanti sulla superficie, assumono una funzione decorativa. Le immagini risultano animate grazie al risalto dei contorni, che in Boato hanno un uso decisamente sovrano, come aggregato decorativo determinante nella composizione dello spazio, tra animato e immobile. Alla formulazione relativamente precisa dei singoli dettagli, risponde una forma espressiva più atmosferica e ampiamente astratta, che crea un nuovo rapporto tra artifizio e realtà. La parte più rilevante della sua produzione è rappresentata da creazioni cangianti, luminose e splendenti, spesso dominate da toni grigi e marroni, quando si tratta di architetture, o variopinte quando al centro ci sono i suoi bambini. Tutte vivono però di un’atmosfera trasparente e risultano materialmente compatte. In tal senso, Matteo Boato - come ad esempio Enzo Cucchi o Anselm Kiefer - è un pittore di paesaggi, dei legami del creato, come quelli noti dalle immagini cittadine di Kokoschka, oppure del viennese Friedensreich Hundertwasser con le sue immagini T R I B U S [testo originale in lingua tedesca] A R N O L D PER MATTEO BOATO 9 I T A L I A N O T R I B U S A R N O L D 10 architettoniche gaie e colorate o con le cittadelle verdi. Sotto questo aspetto, Boato è un pittore di storie, di utopie, della gioia di vivere. Nelle sue opere egli sintetizza, con la materialità, la correlazione spazio-temporale peculiare della storia. Matteo Boato è pittore per passione; vede il mondo con gli occhi del pittore. In questa epoca caratterizzata da concept art, installazioni e arte video, Boato si distanzia da tutte le tendenze per dipingere tout court. Alla base del percorso pittorico egli pone il confronto con la realtà, argomentato in chiave squisitamente intellettuale: motivi, stile, domande formali, indagine spaziale. Il risultato artistico sta nella metamorfosi generata dal superamento di questi aspetti strumentali. Nelle sue immagini il confine tra le categorie di forma e colore si cancella. Il colore, divenendo forma, determina la qualità materiale, la sua sostanzialità. Nei dipinti di Matteo Boato il colore è sostanza che crea la luce. È il colore puro che, applicato come massa compatta, genera una sensazione percepita come spazialità. Il mondo delle immagini di Boato non è un’invenzione meramente fittizia, ma piuttosto una esperienza della realtà. I motivi di quelle immagini sono coniati dalla remota coscienza della sua terra. E’ il momento creativo in cui l’espressione pittorica traduce l’aspetto figurativo in un desiderio d’immediatezza e di qualità dell'arte. Arnold Tribus E N G L I S H Matteo Boato is one of the most skilled and representative of the new generation of creative artists in Trentino. The cultural echoes of his works transcend the borders of the region, boldly tracing an absolutely original path, a far cry from any hint of indulgence towards the ephemeral whims of fashion. He is a dreamy and visionary painter. His paintings take shape like stories, in the phraseology of ringing chromatic tones, decisive brush strokes and the clear awareness of the artistic process that translates images from the real world into pictorial representations. From this point of view, the interpretation of his works starts first and foremost with dreamlike visions, experienced with passion, detached from thought, visions which are then transformed into architectural configurations depicting places which are close to his heart – like his “Dancing Houses”, for example – or, simply, his children, Matilda and Beatrice. Boato exploits to the full the language of pictorial narrative, well aware, not so much that his is a vague imitation of the real object, but rather of the unique creation of inexpressible links between objects. His descriptive language is overflowing with objectivity, a language in which every element becomes an object: things, movements, feelings, atmospheres. The very description of sensations is objectified, in that it is tightly bound to these objects. Matteo Boato’s object world is born from primeval sensations, utopian proposals for a better quality of life, an existential vision in which all things are respected, whether they are living beings or inanimate objects. It is reason, more than passion or desire, which is the moving force behind his images. His work is governed by a tension in the relationship between pictorial and graphic details, in which the brush strokes dominating the surface assume a decorative function. The images come alive thank to the prominence of the contours which, in Boato, reign supreme, a decisive decorative aggregation in the composition of space, between movement and immobility. In response to the relatively precise formulation of individual detail, the expressive form is more atmospheric and broadly abstract, creating a new relationship between artifice and reality. The bulk of his output consists of creations which are changing, luminous and shining, often dominated by grey and brown tones when the subject is architectural, or multicoloured ones when his children are at the centre. But all his creations are nurtured by a transparent atmosphere and are materially compact. In this sense, Matteo Boato – like Enzo Cucchi or Anselm Kiefer, for example – is a painter of landscapes, of links with the created world, like the memorable urban images of Kokoschka, or the Viennese Friedensreich Hundertwasser with his bright T R I B U S [Original text in German] A R N O L D FOR MATTEO BOATO 11 E N G L I S H T R I B U S A R N O L D 12 and colourful architectural images or his green citadels. In this respect, Boato is a painter of stories, utopias, the joy of living. In his work he condenses, through his material technique, the time-space correlation peculiar to history. Matteo Boato is a painter by passion; he sees the world with the eyes of a painter. In this day and age of concept art, installations and video art, Boato distances himself from these trends in order to paint, tout court. His painting originates from his perception of reality, expressed in an exquisitely intellectual way: subjects, style, formal questions, spatial exploration. The artistic result lies in the metamorphosis brought about as he comes to grips with these instrumental aspects. The demarcation line between the categories of form and colour is obliterated in his images. Colour, transformed into form, determines the material quality, its substance. In Matteo Boato’s paintings, colour is substance which creates light. It is pure colour, applied in a compact mass, which gives rise to a sensation perceived as spatiality. Boato’s world of images is not merely a fictitious invention, it is more an experience of reality. The subjects of his paintings have been inspired by the distant awareness of his land. It is the creative moment in which pictorial expression translates the figurative aspect into a desire for immediacy and quality of art. Arnold Tribus D E U T S C H T R I B U S Matteo Boato ist einer der interessantesten und begabtesten jungen Künstler der neuen Trentiner Künstlergeneration. Er wirkt weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus und geht mutig einen ganz eigenen Weg, fern aller Trends und Moden. Matteo Boato ist ein malerischer Träumer und Visionär. Seine Bilder formen sich als Sprache und Erzählungen, aus Tönen und Lauten der Farben, aus den Pinselschlägen sowie dem trainierten Bewusstsein von der Übersetzung des Wirklichkeitsbildes in den malerischen Prozess. So gesehen sind seine Bilder in erster Linie ablesbar als traumhafte und lustvolle Visionen, ganz gleich ob es sich um die malerische Verarbeitung von Architekturen handelt, ihm liebe Plätze, seine „case danzanti“ zum Beispiel oder aber ganz einfach um seine kleinen Kinder Matilda und Beatrice. Boato macht sich die Sprache der Bildererzählung in höchstem Maße zunutze, da er nicht das Bild der Wirklichkeit nachahmt, sondern neue, unaussprechliche Objektverbindungen herstellt. Die Bildsprache von Matteo Boato ist eine Überfülltheit mit Gegenständlichkeit: Alles ist Gegenstand, Ding, Bewegung, Gefühl, Atmosphäre. Die Beschreibung von Empfindungen wird an Objekte gebunden und damit objektiviert. So gesehen besteht Boatos Objektwelt aus Empfindungen, Vorschlägen für Verbesserungen dessen, wie es ist und wie es zu sein hätte, das Leben und alles Belebte, die Dinge und alles Bedingte. Boatos Bilder sind vielmehr von der Vernunft bewegt als von Leidenschaften und Lüsten. Seine Arbeiten sind getragen von einer Spannung zwischen malerischen und grafischen Elementen, wobei das Malerische das Flächenbeherrschende ist und auch den dekorativen Aspekt enthält. Die Belebtheit seiner Bilder drückt sich über die Konturen aus. Es entsteht der für Matteo Boato typische, souveräne Konturismus, der eine wichtige dekorative Komponente in der Raumgestaltung zwischen Belebtheit und Unbelebtheit ausmacht. Der verhältnismäßig präzisen Formulierung einzelner Details antwortet ein mehr atmosphärischer, weitgehend abstrakter Duktus, der ein neues Verhältnis der Künstlichkeit zur Wirklichkeit konstituiert. Den großen Anteil an seiner Produktion haben die Bilder, die sich einer reichen, schillernden Pallette verdanken, lichthaltige, strahlende Schöpfungen, in denen häufig Grau und Braun den Grundton angibt, wenn es sich um Architekturen handelt, farbenprächtig, wenn seine Kinder im Mittelpunkt stehen. Alle aber sind sie atmosphärisch durchsichtig und materiell kompakt. In diesem Sinne ist Matteo Boato wie etwa Enzo Cucchi und Anselm Kiefer ein Maler von Landschaften, des Zusammenhangs der Schöpfung, wie sie uns Kokoschka in einigen Städtebildern vor Augen geführt hat. Oder auch der Wiener Friedensreich Hundertwasser mit seinen verspielten und bunten Baukunstwerken und grünen Zitadellen. Unter diesem Aspekt ist Boato ein Historienmaler, ein Maler der Utopie und der Lebensfreude, er fasst in seinen Bildern Stofflichkeit, Zeitlichkeit, Raum A R N O L D FÜR MATTEO BOATO 13 D E U T S C H und Geschichte zusammen. Matteo Boato ist Maler. Maler aus Leidenschaft. Er sieht die Welt als Maler. In einer Zeit in der Concept-Art, Installationen und Videokunst das Sagen haben, macht Boato die Trends der Zeit nicht mit und malt. Am Anfang des Malvorganges steht die Beschäftigung mit den Sachen, rein intellektuell: Motive, Stilgattung, Formfragen, Raum. Die Kunst liegt darin, über diese Aspekte hinauszukommen. In den Bildern von Matteo Boato verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen den Kategorien Form und Farbe. Die Farbe wird selbst zur Form, sie behauptet ihre materielle Qualität, ihre Stofflichkeit. Die Farbe ist die lichttragende Substanz in den Gemälden Boatos. Die Farben werden als kompakte Masse aufgebracht und determinieren den räumlichen Eindruck in der Wahrnehmung. Boatos Bilderwelt ist keine bloße fiktive Erfindung, sie ist vielmehr Erfahrung von Wirklichkeit. Seine Bildmotive sind Prägungen seiner unmittelbaren Heimat. Seine expressive und figurative Malerei ist ein Verlangen nach Unmittelbarkeit des Ausdrucks und nach sinnlicher Qualität der Malerei. A R N O L D T R I B U S Arnold Tribus 14 I T A L I A N O M A L A T E S T A Case, facciate, porte e finestre ubriache in una grammatica dell’immaginazione che si scalda della memoria di presenze, affetti, narrazioni; centri storici come materia vivente che si rispecchia nelle carezze di corpi fluttuanti, graffiti nelle concrezioni del colore; ciuffi di campanili in fantasticate prospettive a volo d’uccello tra fazzoletti di tetti e campi arati. Architettonica nei soggetti come nella regola compositiva, la pittura di Matteo Boato si scopre a suo agio tra le arcate e la pietra lavorata di Casa de Gentili. La cronaca di cinque anni di ricerche si sfoglia in cento opere che si organizzano naturalmente in sequenze, tra persistenze iconografiche e amore di geometria. Una ormai piena maturità d’artista, difatti, ha dato rigore alle intuizioni di Boato sulla serialità caratteristica della visione contemporanea. Il risultato è un diario di relazioni ritmiche e strutturali che si sviluppano con coerenza, tela dopo tela, secondo il procedimento dell’improvvisazione e della variazione musicale. Continua così l’impegno di sempre sulle architetture storiche e le piazze come organismi e monumenti di intimità domestica e di relazione. La vita che pulsa sotto la pelle delle “Case danzanti”, con il contrappunto della presenza-assenza della figura umana, invita ad uno sguardo responsabile verso quella fragile armonia di storia e ambiente troppo spesso insidiata dalle ruspe e dal cemento. Ma la produzione di Boato respinge ogni tentazione illustrativa strumentando con consapevolezza crescente un autonomo universo figurativo. Ne fanno parte le griglie e i lirismi dei “cieli di campi” e le altre concentrate visioni di “Terra ed Acqua”. Dopo aver abituato il suo pubblico alla forza espressionista del colore, raggrumato in bioccoli e incrostazioni, Boato recentemente ha sperimentato anche soluzioni meno materiche, che trattengono l’esuberanza della tinta a favore del segno grafico, o di nuove e più tenui armonie. Ne sono testimonianza i sospesi notturni della serie “Plenilunio”, accanto ai paesaggi urbani in bianco/nero che consegnano gli spessori cromatici alle sole figure umane. La ricerca compositiva si estende anche ai silenzi sottili tra le opere che si strutturano in coppie e polittici, moltiplicando le possibilità combinatorie dell’alfabeto visivo di Matteo. Un analogo principio informa i 13 lavori dedicati alla dinamica segreta della relazione di coppia. È la danza a dettare la forma della serie “Insogno”, che indaga l’alterità e l’incontro nella giostra erotica dei corpi e della mente. L’ars amatoria di Boato porta nel quadro anche la parola scritta, associando l’atlante degli abbracci e delle fughe degli amanti con le schegge di frasi rubate, sottratte al flusso del tempo. Da ultimo l’inventario poetico dell’artista si arricchisce delle immagini scarabocchiate e esuberanti delle figlie Matilda e Beatrice, ritagliate a risparmio nelle stesure solide del colore. Ed è proprio strizzando l’occhio alla creatività libera e spontanea dell’arte infantile K A T I A MATTEO BOATO, 2006 - 2010 15 I T A L I A N O M A L A T E S T A K A T I A 16 che Boato riconnette forma e contenuto, rispolverando con sorridente nostalgia la tradizione pericolante dell’album di famiglia. Katia Malatesta E N G L I S H M A L A T E S T A Inebriated houses, façades, doors and windows in a grammar of the imagination warmed by the memory of those once present, by affections, narrations; historic centres as living material reflected in the caresses of fluctuating bodies, graffiti in concretions of colour; clumps of bell towers in imaginary landscapes, viewed from above, as the crow flies, amidst pocket handkerchiefs of roofs and ploughed fields. Matteo Boato’s paintings, architectural both in their choice of subject and in the rules of composition, are at home amidst the arcades and carved stonework of the Casa de’ Gentili. The fruits of five years of research are revealed in a hundred works organised in natural sequences, characterised by recurring iconographies and a love of geometry. Indeed, the artist has reached full maturity, a fact that lends rigour to his intuitions regarding the sequential nature of contemporary vision. The result is a diary of rhythmic and structural relations that unfold coherently, canvas after canvas, in the style of an improvisation, a musical variation. The artist continues his life-long passion for historic architecture and squares as organisms and monuments to domestic intimacy and relationships. Life pulses beneath the skin of the “Dancing Houses”, with its counterpoint of presenceabsence of the human figure, inviting us to take a responsible look at the fragile harmony of our history and environment, all too often at the mercy of bulldozers and cement. But Boato resists any temptation to resort to illustration in his works, by orchestrating with growing awareness an autonomous figurative universe. This includes the grids and lyricism of the “Skies of Fields” and the other intense visions of “Land and Water”. Having familiarised his public with the expressionist force of colour, in thickly coagulated clots and incrustations, Boato has recently been experimenting with a more sparing use of materials, playing down the exuberant application of colour in favour of drawn signs, or of new and subtler harmonies. This can be seen in the nocturnal suspensions in the “Full Moon” series, alongside black and white urban landscapes in which only the human figure is given any chromatic depth. Matteo’s compositional research also includes the slender silences between works conceived in pairs and polyptyches, thereby multiplying the number of possible combinations in his visual alphabet. The same principle can be seen at work in thirteen paintings dedicated to the secret dynamics of the couple relationship. Here it is dance that dictates the form of the series “Dreaming”, which explores the encounter with the other in an erotic carousel of bodies and minds. Boato’s ars amatoria brings the written word into his painting, linking the atlas of the lovers’ embraces and flights with fragments of stolen phrases, released from the K A T I A MATTEO BOATO, 2006 - 2010 17 E N G L I S H M A L A T E S T A K A T I A 18 flow of time. Finally, the poetic inventory of the artist is enriched with segments of scribbled and exuberant images of his daughters Matilda and Beatrice, set against the solid expanses of colour. And it is precisely by winking at the free and spontaneous creativity of children’s art that Boato reconnects form and content, and, with a nostalgic smile, gives a new look to the wavering tradition of the family album. della socialità, ambiente intimo e allo stesso tempo aperto al dialogo e al confronto sono il fulcro concettuale di molti lavori che toccano vari centri urbani italiani come Venezia, Burano, Trento, Rovereto, Padova, Verona, Feltre, Bergamo, Milano, Riva del Garda, Bologna, Gubbio, Firenze, Siena, Lucca, Pitigliano, Sorano, Roma, Loreto, Mantova, Vigevano, Parma. La prima parte di questo volume raccoglie l’ultimo stadio di una ricerca iniziata nel 1999 su nuclei antichi che ha dato vita a serie titolate “Le Case danzanti”, “Cielo di Tetti”, “La Piazza”. L’intento di questo percorso è di scoprire l’anima della città, indagando case, facciate, porte e finestre che si affacciano sul loro cuore medioevale. Impregnati degli umani umori, questi edifici conservano impresse nella loro materia costruttiva le storie delle persone che le hanno abitate e il senso del loro agire. Un richiamo verso le nostre radici, verso un mondo fragilissimo in continuo pericolo di scomparsa. L’aggettivo “danzanti” relativo a questa serie, non ha solo connotazione gioiosa, ma si può collegare al tema delle danze macabre, affascinanti affreschi gotici nei quali l’apparire della morte nei festini di donne e cavalieri richiama alla precarietà dell’umano. Ma sono soprattutto case in cammino, che vorrebbero volare, danzare la loro storia; aggrappate alla roccia e al tempo, come tessere di un raffinato mosaico. Questa serie di tele ancor oggi alimentata e viva è seguita da altri insiemi di lavori che escono dal nucleo urbano, incentrati sul territorio aperto, sul paesaggio rurale, su piccoli agglomerati urbani o casolari isolati, su borghi marini, dai titoli “Cielo di Campi”, “Plenilunio”, “Terra e Acqua”. Nel catalogo sono presenti anche olii appartenenti ad una serie dal titolo “Insogno” che, come fotogrammi, presentano l’intimità di una coppia, ai cui piedi, alludendo ad uno stile cartellonistico, ho posto estratti di poesie italiane e estere. Il tentativo-gioco è di sovrapporre razionalità e istintività, testa e cuore, nella stessa dimensione, nello stesso spazio visivo. Vivo il dipingere come fosse un diario, un continuo raccontare la mia vita. Dipingo prevalentemente su tela o legno e ultimamente su ceramica, quello che mi suggestiona, quello che vedo di accattivante dal mio vascello in volo sul mondo, quello che amo, come un’autobiografia. Per rincorrere sogni, per dare vita alle persone o agli ambienti che desidero toccare, con i quali voglio interagire. Una semplice e primaria necessità di espressione; un’esigenza di raccontarsi e di raccontare. La serie sui centri storici e sui paesaggi rurali presenta un’altra caratteristica: la presenzaassenza dell’uomo nelle varie tele; in parte dovuta al fatto che le umane storie sono espresse esclusivamente attraverso il colore; in parte dovuta alla speranza che nel futuro l’uomo si meriti davvero uno spazio sulla terra e si crei un mondo I T A L I A N O più felice, operoso, onesto, pulito, rispettoso e colorato. Ho incontrato la pittura da bambino e continuo ad essere bambino in questo. Era a quel tempo innanzitutto adatta, in quanto tecnicamente semplice, a rendere vivi pomeriggi solitari e lunghe estati in montagna. Un mezzo espressivo che tuttora considero il più adatto al mio fare, perché il segno si espleta hic et nunc, esce direttamente dall’io, dallo stomaco senza intermediazioni tecniche che filtrino o addirittura condizionino il procedimento creativo e richiede inoltre mezzi di supporto poveri, ma durevoli. Il “bello” della pittura è la sua capacità comunicativa e vedo una stretta relazione tra opere pittoriche e universalità del messaggio celato dietro composizione e campiture di colore. Così quando finisco un lavoro che considero emotivamente positivo ho l’impressione di essere di fronte ad un déjà vu. Per chi guarda, la tela è un punto di vista, una finestra sul mondo che sta dietro le cose e gli uomini. Per me che ne faccio uso è un luogo mentale, anzi è proprio la mia mente, il mio cielo. M A T T E O B O A T O Matteo Boato 123 E N G L I S H B O A T O M A T T E O 124 LAND AND WATER Houses and squares, the foundation for social interaction, evoking an atmosphere that is intimate and yet at the same time open to dialogue and contact with the outside world: these form the conceptual essence of a large number works set in various Italian towns and cities, including Venice, Burano, Trento, Padua, Verona, Feltre, Milan, Riva del Garda, Bologna, Gubbio, Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pitigliano, Sorano, Loreto, Mantua, Vigevano and Parma. The first part of this catalogue represents the final stage of a research project dating back to 1999 into historic urban centres, resulting in the sequences of paintings entitled “Dancing Houses”, “Sky of Roofs” and “The Square”. The aim of the research was to discover the soul of each town or city through close study of the houses, façades, doors and windows looking out onto its medieval heart. These buildings, impregnated with human moods, have preserved within the very fabric of their materials the stories and actions of the people who once lived there. They hark back to our roots, to an extremely fragile world that is in constant danger of disappearing. The use of the adjective “dancing” in the series “Dancing Houses” has not only joyful connotations, but can also refer to the macabre, as in the fascinating gothic frescoes in which Death appears in the midst of the festivities of knights and ladies, a reminder of the precarious nature of human existence. But these are above all houses “on the move”, houses which long to fly, to dance their stories; houses that cling to the rock face and to time, like the tesserae of a refined mosaic. This series of canvasses – which is still alive today, still being added to – is followed by other sequences of works set away from the towns, focussing instead on the open countryside, rural landscapes, small hamlets, isolated farmhouses and fishing villages, and bearing the titles “Sky of Fields”, “Full Moon”, “Land and Water”. The catalogue also contains a number of oil paintings belonging to a series entitled “Dreaming” which, like stills from a film, depict the intimacy of a couple at whose feet I have put extracts from Italian and foreign poetry, as if they were the captions in a poster. The playful intent here was to superimpose rationality and instinct, mind and body, in the same dimension, the same visual space. Painting for me is like keeping a diary, a constant retelling of my life. I paint mostly on canvas or wood and, more recently, on pottery. I paint the things that appeal to me, that capture my imagination as I fly above the world in my vessel, I paint the things I love, as though I were writing my autobiography. Painting allows me to pursue dreams, to give life to the people and places I would like to touch, interact with. It is a simple and primary need for expression; a need to tell, to tell about E N G L I S H B O A T O Matteo Boato M A T T E O myself. The series on historic centres and rural landscapes presents another trait: the presence-absence of people in the various canvasses. This is partly due to the fact that human stories are told exclusively through the use of colour, and partly due to the hope that in future man will truly deserve a place on this earth and will create a world which is happier, more hardworking, honest, clean, respectful and colourful. I started painting as a child, and I am still a child in this respect. At the time, painting was, thanks to its technical simplicity, a good way of bringing to life solitary afternoons and long summers in the mountains. I still consider it the ideal form of expression for someone like me, because it takes shape in the here and now, emerging directly from within me, coming straight from the gut without any technical mediation which might filter or even condition the creative process. Moreover, the material support required is humble, but lasting. The “beauty” of painting lies in its power of communication, and I see a close connection between paintings and the universal nature of the message concealed behind the composition and the background colour. This is why, when I stand before a completed work that I consider emotionally positive, it gives me the feeling of déjà vu. For the observer, the canvas is a point of view, a window onto the world lying behind things and people.
