Welcome to the first edition of NOTIZIE for this year.
Since the last edition in 2014, many changes have taken
place around the Assisi Centre, from both the Management
and Committee of Management perspectives.
As of 5 January 2015, we welcomed a new Chief Executive
Officer, Martin Sammut and a new Director of Care, Fiona
Kool.
Whilst initially there may have been some concern about
the replacement of our two most senior staff at the same
time, that concern was quickly put to rest. Both Martin and
Fiona moved into their roles quickly and smoothly.
I take this opportunity to commend both Martin and Fiona
on their efforts in maintaining a steady approach to the
provision of services to our residents during this period.
Their commitment, passion and new ideas have been on
display from the outset and have been well received by
everyone at the Assisi Centre.
Since our last AGM in November 2014, we have also seen
the introduction of new Committee Members each bringing
fresh ideas and a new range of skills and expertise. They
have had a positive impact on the overall dynamics of the
Committee of Management. Furthermore, I am pleased
to say that in the process we have also achieved our work
place Gender Equality requirements.
Accordingly, I wish to welcome Silvana Sgro, Tonina
Gucciardo-Masci and Rick Rostolis onto the Assisi
Committee of Management.
Equally, I would also like to acknowledge the enormous
contribution made by our long serving and retiring
Committee Members, Dr. John Portelli, Marcello Mattia and
Ferdinand Zito, all of whom gave their time unconditionally.
Their guidance and contribution as Committee Members
have been immeasurable to the ongoing success and
development of the Assisi Centre. All three will be greatly
missed.
As part of our continued development of the Assisi Centre,
I wish to advise that works are about to commence in respect
of the refurbishment of the Nursing Home. We are currently
awaiting the finalisation of tenders for the proposed works
which are expected to be completed in the early part of next
year.
This is a welcome and important project that will enhance
our wonderful facility and bring the standard of the
St. Francis Unit in line with the new Poli Building and
redeveloped Hostel.
In the month of May, the Committee of Management
Members and the Management Team attended a Strategic
Planning Day. The day was well planned and enthusiastically
supported by all attendees.
I wish to thank everyone involved for their valuable commitment
and contribution on the day and for giving up time during a
weekend to be part of this important event. I am confident that
the sharing of ideas and insights about the future of the Assisi
Centre will be of benefit to everyone involved.
The Committee of Management is very mindful of its role in
fostering a culture of service, compassion and innovation
at the Assisi Centre and in ensuring the organisation’s
financial sustainability for the benefit of the community.
Our residents and their families remain and will always be
paramount in our endeavours.
On behalf of everyone involved with the Assisi Centre,
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the many
volunteers and benefactors. Without the assistance and
contribution of these generous people, our work would be
much more difficult. It is truly humbling to know that we
have such people and organisations in our community.
Finally, can I urge all resident families and friends of the
Assisi Centre to support the wonderful work undertaken
by the Assisi Women’s Committee in organising a variety of
marvellous functions throughout the year. The members and
supporters of the Women’s Committee are all volunteers
and should be applauded for the important role they play in
the life of the Assisi Centre.

Benvenuti alla prima edizione di Notizie dell’anno.
Dall’ultima edizione nel 2014 molti cambiamenti sono
occorsi al centro Assisi, sia dalla prospettiva del Comitato
direttivo di gestione che dalla Direzione:
Il 5 Gennaio del 2015 abbiamo accolto il nuovo Direttore
esecutivo (CEO) Martin Sammut, e la nuova Direttrice del
settore assistenza Fiona Kool.
Se inizialmente c’era una certa apprensione per la decisione
di rimpiazzare, allo stesso tempo, i due principali dirigenti
del centro, quelle preoccupazioni erano decisamente mal
riposte, con Martin e Fiona che si sono subito agevolmente
calati nei rispettivi ruoli.
Prendo l’opportunità per ringraziare e congratularmi
con Martin e Fiona per il loro professionismo,
l’ impegno e la passione con la quale hanno affrontato questi
primi mesi di lavoro, e soprattutto per le loro idee innovative,
per migliorare i servizi di assistenza ai residenti, subito
adottate con entusiasmo da tutti all’Assisi.
Dalla nostra ultima Assemblea generale annuale, nel
novembre 2014, abbiamo dato il benvenuto a tre nuovi
membri del Comitato direttivo di gestione, che non solo
hanno portato con loro specializzazioni ed esperienze
diverse, ma anche nuove idee che hanno avuto un impatto
positivo nella dinamica del Comitato. La loro adesione ha
inoltre permesso al Comitato del Centro Assisi di adeguarsi
alle direttive sulla parità tra i sessi.
Permettemi di dare ufficialmente il benvenuto a Silvana
Sgro, Tonina Gucciardo-Masci e Rick Rostolis nel Comitato
direttivo dell’Assisi, e al contempo di riconoscere l’enorme
contributo dei membri uscenti, il dotto John Portelli,
Marcello Mattia e Ferdinand Zito che hanno offerto
generosamente ed incondizionatamente il loro tempo.
L’orientamento e il contributo offerto dai tre ex membri del
Comitato sono stati incommensurabili ed hanno garantito il
continuo sviluppo e successo dell’Assisi. Sentiremo la loro
mancanza.
Nell’ambito delle ristrutturazioni all’Assisi siamo in grado
di confermare che l’inizio dei lavori per rimettere a nuovo
la casa di cura, è ormai imminente. Siamo in attesa di
concludere la gara d’appalto per la ristrutturazione che
dovrebbe venire completata nei primi mesi del prossimo anno.
Si tratta di un progetto di vitale importanza che migliorerà
esponenzialmente la nostra struttura e adeguerà il
padiglione St. Francis alla nuova ala Poli e alla casa di
riposo completamente rimodernata.
Nel mese di maggio, il Comitato direttivo di gestione ha
preso parte ad una Giornata di pianificazione strategica,
perfettamente organizzata e supportata con entusiasmo
da tutti i partecipanti, che ringrazio calorosamente per
l’adesione, l’impegno dimostrato il grande contributo, e
soprattutto le idee e le innovazioni che garantiranno un
futuro florido al Centro Assisi.
Il Comitato direttivo di gestione rimane consapevole del
proprio ruolo nella promozione di una cultura di assistenza
compassionevole e innovativa, e per garantire la sostenibilità
finanziaria del Centro Assisi a beneficio della comunità.
Servizi sempre migliori per i nostri residenti e le loro
famiglie continueranno ad essere il fulcro dei nostri sforzi.
A nome di tutti coloro che sono coinvolti con il Centro,
vorrei ringraziare sinceramente e con grande calore
tutti i volontari e i benefattori dell’Assisi. Il nostro lavoro
sarebbe molto più difficile senza l’assistenza, il contributo
e la generosità di queste persone. Grazie di cuore per il
privilegio e l’esperienza illuminante di avere persone e
organizzazioni di questo calibro e spessore nella nostra
organizzazione e nella nostra comunità.
In chiusura vorrei spronare tutti i familiari dei residenti
e gli amici dell’Assisi a dare sostegno alle splendide
iniziative organizzate nel corso dell’anno, dal Comitato
femminile. Le componenti del Comitato femminile sono
tutte volontarie e a loro, ed ai sostenitori, va il nostro
plauso per il ruolo vitale che svolgono a sostegno del
Centro Assisi.

from the CEO
This being my first contribution to the Notizie Newsletter
has helped me to reflect on my first six months at the
Assisi Centre. Firstly, I have been privileged to be welcomed
into the lives of so many people – Residents, Families,
Volunteers and Staff.
The Board and senior management have spent considerable
time working on the organisation’s new Strategic Plan.
Our 2015-2018 pillars and priorities will focus on Faith &
Mission, Board & Governance, Service Development, Brand
& Marketing and Workforce. In a challenging and complex
environment our attention to these areas will be driven by
key principles involving Quality Care, Faith and Community
and designed to produce best outcomes for Residents as
well as a sustainable and secure future for the organisation.
Since January, the Assisi Centre has gradually adopted a
number of changes in order to meet the challenges that
go hand in hand with the responsibilities of providing
aged care. A new management structure has assisted
staff to have a better understanding of reporting lines
and accountabilities. Part of this change has involved
heightened management by the Nurse Unit Managers to
develop their teams in their respective units to ensure a
stable and consistent workforce. The aim is to have staff in
place who are familiar with each resident’s care needs and
to deliver care that is always resident focussed. The work
around this area has also meant a reduction in casual and
agency staff and an increase in permanent part-time staff.
We are very close to commencing the refurbishment of
the St Francis high care unit so that we can mirror the
great building works that have taken place to the rest of
the facility in recent times. A builder will be engaged to
commence works in late July with anticipated completion
to be early 2016.
A project team led by Fiona Kool, Director of Care will
ensure that residents and families will be kept informed
about the progress of works and any impact that these may
have on individual residents. Part of the works will involve
the installation of ‘Smart Floor Technology’ that will benefit
both staff and residents. This project has been made
possible through a successful submission to the Pamela
and Lorenzo Galli Charitable Trust with the Assisi Centre
receiving a grant of $83,000 to fully fund the work. The
organisation is very fortunate and grateful to have Pamela
Galli, Mr. Armando Poli, the Women’s Committee and
various other generous supporters who donate regularly
towards the care and services provided by the Assisi Centre.
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet many of the
volunteers who make such a significant contribution
to the organisation and the residents in our care. The
Volunteers Recognition Ceremony enables the Board,
management, staff and residents to acknowledge
and say thank you to the many individuals who give so
selflessly of their time and person.
The Assisi Centre will continue to work with volunteers,
families and communities in collaboration and mutually
beneficial ways – the more we can work together the more
we are likely to achieve our outcomes and continue to be
successful.

Scrivere il mio primo contributo alla rivista Notizie, mi ha
spinto a riflettere sui miei primi sei mesi al Centro Assisi.
Permettetemi di ringraziare i residenti e i loro familiari, i
dipendenti e i volontari, per il loro caloroso benvenuto.
Il Consiglio direttivo e il comparto amministrativo dell’Assisi
hanno elaborato un nuovo Piano strategico -organizzativo,
che ha fissato una serie di priorità per gli anni 2015-2018,
focalizzate su fede e missione, gestione amministrativa,
sviluppo servizi, marketing, forza lavoro e immagine.
Per garantire sia il benessere dei residenti che un futuro
sostenibile per l’organizzazione, il nostro impegno nel
raggiungere le priorità, in un ambiente complesso ed in
stato di costante mutevolezza, sarà sempre guidato dai
principi chiave di qualità dell’assistenza, fede e comunità.
Da gennaio ad oggi il Centro Assisi, per far fronte alle
nuove sfide che accompagnano la responsabilità di fornire
assistenza agli anziani, ha gradualmente adottato una serie
di cambiamenti operativi. La nuova struttura manageriale
ha fornito nuove informazioni al personale per quanto
riguarda rapporti e responsabilità. Parte del cambiamento
ha riguardato dare ai manager delle unità infermieristiche
maggiori responsabilità nella scelta e lo sviluppo dei rispettivi
team. Questo cambiamento intende sviluppare una maggior
familiarità del personale con le esigenze specifiche di ogni
residente e fornire un adeguato livello di assistenza.
In questo frangente abbiamo deciso di ridurre il personale
occasionale o di altre agenzie, e rafforzare il nostro organico
con posizione permanenti part-time.
Siamo vicini all’inizio dei lavori di ristrutturazione del centro
di assistenza intensiva St Francis in maniera che anche
quell’ala dell’Assisi rispecchi l’eleganza del resto del Centro.
I lavori di ristrutturazione inizieranno alla fine di luglio e si
prevede che verranno completati agli inizi del 2016.
Fiona Kool, direttrice del settore Assistenza, assieme ad
un team di collaboratori, si premurerà di tenere informati
i familiari dei residenti su eventuali disagi causati dagli
sviluppi del programma di ristrutturazione. Parte del
lavoro includerà la creazione di un “area intelligente ad alta
tecnologia” della quale beneficeranno sia i residenti che il
personale, che è stato reso possibile dalla generosità del
Pamela and Lorenzo Galli Charitable Trust che ha finanziato
il progetto con una donazione di $ 83.000.
Il Centro Assisi è estremamente fortunato ad avere tra i
suoi più fedeli ed assidui sostenitori Pamela Galli, Armando
Poli, l’infaticabile Comitato femminile oltre a numerosi
altri generosi sponsor, che ci permettono di offrire servizi
sempre più all’avanguardia nell’assistenza agli anziani.
Recentemente ho avuto il privilegio di incontrare molti
dei volontari che a solo titolo altruistico, contribuiscono in
maniera immensa a migliorare il livello di assistenza che la
nostra organizzazione offre ai residenti.
La cerimonia di riconoscimento dei volontari permette al
Consiglio direttivo, il personale e i residenti di ringraziare
ufficialmente tutti quegli individui che disinteressatamente
offrono il loro tempo.
Il Centro Assisi continuerà a lavorare in stretta collaborazione
con volontari, famiglie e comunità perché solo uniti
potremmo raggiungere i nostri obiettivi e continuare la
strada del successo.
Women’s Committee Report
The Assisi Women’s Committee has been an integral part of
the Assisi Centre since 1990. Many women have been part
of this committee whose principal function has been to raise
funds for the Assisi Centre.
Il Comitato femminile, dalla sua istituzione nel 1990, è
diventato parte integrante del Centro Assisi.
The committee has been very successful in doing this,
raising over $700,000 since its inception.
Dagli inizi ad oggi il Comitato femminile, con una miriade di
iniziative, ha raccolto $700,000 a favore del Centro.
I am proud to say that we still have a number of the original
committee members and it is interesting to see that we are
still attracting women wanting to be part of our committee.
E ragione di grande orgoglio che alcune delle donne che
facevano parte del primo Comitato siano ancora attive
ed è interessante notare che ci sono molte signore che
vorrebbero entrare a far parte del Comitato femminile.
We have had some wonderful fundraisers over the years,
such as
• Art and craft market,
• Lunch at the Windsor Hotel with a display of antique
jewellery
• High Tea at the Assisi Centre
•Participation at many ‘Festa Della Repubblica’
celebrations with our very popular Spinning Wheel
• Lunches at the Assisi Centre with many guest speakers
such as Italian journalist Gabriella G. Hubbard and
author & restaurateur, Rosa Mitchell
• Film nights, theatre nights, our very popular indoor
garage sale
• Ending the year with our annual Dinner Dance held in
November
All money raised by the Committee is used for the benefit
of our residents at the Assisi Centre, such as the Hearing
Loop that was installed in the auditorium during the recent
redevelopment which allows residents whose hearing
maybe failing to have clearer sound.
Molte donne hanno fatto parte del Comitato la cui funzione
principale è quella di raccogliere fondi per il Centro Assisi.
Nel corso degli anni abbiamo organizzato splendide iniziative
per raccogliere fondi, quali:
• Mercatini di art and craft,
• Pranzi all’Hotel Windsor con mostra di gioielli antichi
• High Tea al Centro Assisi
• Partecipazione a molte edizioni della ‘Festa Della
Repubblica’ con la nostraRuota della fortuna
• Pranzi al Centro Assisi con la partecipazione di
numerosi ospiti come la giornalista italiana Gabriella
G. Hubbard e la scrittrice e ristoratrice, Rosa Mitchell
• Serate dedicate al cinema e al teatro e il popolarissimo
garage sale
• La serata danzante di novembre che chiude il ciclo di
attività annuali
Tutti i fondi raccolti vengono utilizzati per iniziative a
beneficio dei residenti del Centro Assisi, come ad esempio
il circuito acustico che è stato installato durante i recenti
lavori di ristrutturazione, che permette a coloro che hanno
problemi di udito di sentire meglio.

Mr & Mrs Cianci

Giuseppe Cianci was born in Vasto, Abruzzo. He
came to Australia in 1955. His wife Maria and
their two children, arrived the following year.
During the great Italian migration boom of the
1950’s, it was very common for the husband to
arrive in Australia ahead of the family in order
to lay the foundations for a prosperous future.
Giuseppe landed in Melbourne, via Sydney in
1964. He was initially employed as a contract
labourer. The family settled in Camberwell and
Giuseppe took over a local barber shop which
he ran for 20 years. In the meantime, Maria
was employed at various knitting mills before
becoming a pastry chef at Nazareth House in
Camberwell from 1970 to 1986.
The Ciancis settled at the Assisi Centre in early
2014 and have since become an integral part
of our community. Despite both experiencing
ongoing limb and leg soreness and the
associated mobility issues, they continue
to actively engage in the activity program,
regularly attending functions, exercises, games
and outings. A keen bocce enthusiast, Giuseppe
was a long term member at the Veneto Club and loves
to catch up with old friends when the Men’s Group
conducts its regular outings there.
Next year, Maria and Giuseppe will celebrate their 70th
wedding anniversary.
Giuseppe Cianci, nato a Vasto in Abruzzo, è sbarcato
in Australia nel 1955, e l’anno successivo è stato
raggiunto dalla moglie Maria e i due figli. Negli anni
dell’immigrazione italiana di massa era consuetudine
che l’uomo si insediasse prima per porre le fondamenta
di un prospero futuro e poi venisse raggiunto dalla
famiglia.Dopo alcuni anni trascorsi a Sydney, Giuseppe
è arrivato a Melbourne nel 1964, dove ha cominciato a
lavorare come manovale a contratto.
La famiglia Cianci si è stabilita nel quartiere di Camberwell
dove Giuseppe ha rilevato una un negozio da barbiere,
che ha gestito per vent’anni, e Maria ha lavorato in varie
industri tessili prima di diventare pasticcera presso
Nazareth House a Camberwell, dove è rimasta dal 1970
al 1986.
All’inizio del 2014 i coniugi Cianci si sono trasferiti al
Centro Assisi e da allora sono diventati parte integrante
della nostra comunità.
Nonostante i problemi di mobilità dovuti all’indolenzimento
agli arti di cui soffrono entrambi, i Cianci partecipano al
programma di attività, prendendo
regolarmente parte alle gite, le feste
e le cerimonie, i giochi e gli esercizi
di gruppo.
Grande appassionato del gioco
delle bocce Giuseppe è stato per
molti ann membro del Veneto Club
e ama ritrovarsi con i vecchi amici
durante le regolari escursioni del
gruppo maschile dell’Assisi al club
di Bulleen.
Il prossimo anno Maria e Giuseppe
celebreranno il loro settantesimo
anniversario di matrimonio.
Sheila’s Polar Adventures

I have held a lifelong fascination in the wilderness areas
of the world and have been privileged to have visited
pristine areas of Antarctica on two occasions and also
travel to the sub-arctic region of Manitoba in Northern
Canada and see the magnificent Polar Bears.
Da sempre sono stata affascinata dalle lande più selvagge
del mondo, ed ho avuto il grande privilegio di visitare due
volte le aree incontaminate dell’Antartide, e la regione
sub-artica di Manitoba nel Nord Canada, dove ho avuto
modo di vedere i magnifici orsi polari.
Words cannot describe stepping onto the Antarctic
Continent. There are no superlatives to adequately
describe its magnificence and beauty. It is unspoiled,
primeval, treacherous and silent. The winds are
ferocious, the sky brilliant blue and the unpolluted air
wakes every sense in the body.
E’ difficile descrivere a parole la magnificenza del
Continente Antartico. Non esistono superlativi adeguati
per descriverne la bellezza e il meraviglioso splendore.
E’ una zona primordiale, pericolosa e silenziosa, spazzata
da venti feroci ma con un cielo di un blu brillante e una
area talmente pura ed incontaminata da risvegliare ogni
senso del corpo.
Large areas are populated by thousands of frenetically
busy Adelie penguins, urgently going about the
business of rearing the next generation during the
short Antarctic summer. Then suddenly they are all
gone, back out to sea leaving behind only large stains
of guano which are soon covered with ice and snow.
It is unbelievably moving to sit in their company and
marvel at their antics and their survival in the harsh
environment.
Seal populations also rear their young in what is one
of the only safe environments left for them on land.
Albatross and other birds including snow petrels who call
Antarctica home are in abundance using the thermals to
soar above the icy scene.
Zone enormi sono popolate da migliaia di pinguini
Adelie, freneticamente impegnati ad accudire ed allevare
le nuove generazioni durante la brevissima estate
antartica. Poi improvvisamente sono spariti sono tornati
in mare, lasciandosi dietro solo una striscia di concime
naturale, che presto verrà ricoperto di neve e di ghiaccio.
E’ splendido poter sedere tra loro, meravigliarsi per le loro
strane capriole, i loro movimenti bizzarri, e soprattutto la
loro vitalità in un ambiente inclemente e impietoso.
Anche le foche accudiscono ai loro piccoli in una delle
ultime zone sicure per loro, sul pianeta. Gli albatri ed
altri uccelli, incluse le procellarie da neve sono di casa
in Antartide.
At the other end of the world it is equally inspiring to see
considerable numbers of Polar Bears completely at home
in the vastness of the frozen tundra and encroaching ice.
It brought into sharp focus the peril they are in from a
world growing too warm to sustain them.
E’ assolutamente entusiasmante vedere considerevoli
numeri di orsi polari completamente a loro agio nella
tundra ghiacciata, dall’altra parte del mondo. Ma è
agghiacciante pensare al pericolosi sostentamento che
corrono, in un mondo dal clima sempre più caldo.
Before the town of Churchill Manitoba existed, the bears
congregated there to wait for the ice to harden sufficiently
for them to spend the winter out on the ice hunting for
seals. These days they share the territory with the small
human population. This has resulted in some interesting
management solutions designed to protect both the
human and bear populations. These include a 10pm
siren which sounds in the town to indicate it is not safe to
wander out after dark without being in a locked vehicle
and the world’s only Polar Bear jail for bears who have
transgressed and failed to sufficiently understand the
‘sharing arrangements’.
Prima dell’esistenza della città di Churchill Manitoba,
gli orsi polari si congregavano in quella zona in attesa
della sufficiente solidificazione del ghiaccio, in maniera
da poter trascorrere l’inverno a caccia di foche. Oggi
come oggi sono costretti a condividere il territorio con la
piccola popolazione umana che lo abita, e che ha portato
all’elaborazione di interessanti soluzioni di gestione
per proteggere sia la popolazione umana che quella
animale. Tra queste la sirena che suona ogni sera alle
22 per avvertire la popolazione umana della pericolosità
di uscire di casa,se non a bordo di vetture sicure, e

I love travelling to remote and unspoilt areas. The fact
they are diminishing makes them all the more precious.
I’m not sure where my travels will take me next however
I know I will continue to enjoy the journey.

History of the Convent

Having lived in the Rosanna area off and on since 1977,
I have, on several occasions, looked into the local history
with a degree of fascination, trying to imagine life as it was
back in early 1900s.
Imagine my excitement, after commencing work at the
Assisi Centre in 2012, at the prospect of delving into the
history of the convent. It didn’t take long for me to go
exploring the first & second floors of the old building trying
to imagine the life of the novitiates back in the 1930s.
This prompted me to delve deeper into the history of the
convent pre-Assisi era. The lack of information available was
as much intriguing as it was frustrating. How is it possible
that such a beautiful and imposing landmark doesn’t even
warrant a hit on Google?
It was only after bypassing the internet and researching the
old fashioned way that progress was made… The Ivanhoe
library has a room dedicated to local history…. Staff there
were only too happy to assist me in my quest as I imagine
this room is used rather infrequently.
Amongst the many shelves of books and journals only
one chapter in one book was going to appease me: Pages
219 to 223 of ‘The Labourers’ friends’ by Maree G. Allen,
documents the history of the Rosanna convent:
In April 1927 the nuns bought a 25 acre property, St James
Park Estate, through a group of Ascot Vale accountants.
It comprised of four house blocks, privately owned by
individuals and fronting Rosanna Rd, as well as 9 acres,
some of which was orchard, stretching to McCrae Rd.

A fortnight later the real opening took place: the novices
arrived with their trunks, which they had to carry up the
stairs, some of them getting lost in the seeming labyrinth
of corridors.
Their first meal was taken in silence simply because in the
flurry they forgot to ask for necessary permission.
All told the land & building cost £50,000
In 1938 they bought a smaller 1 acre house block facing
Coorie Crescent- Its owner was Eliza McAuley.
On the purchased land stood 2 houses: one a workman’s
cottage, the other a handsome Queen Anne style timber
residence, built in 1903 and sited on its own 5 acres in the
midst of a pine plantation. The foundation stone was laid
10th October 1928.
The problem was that money to build the 107 room
novitiate was scarce and the nuns had tried all proven
means to raise funds.
In 1930 the financial position was so serious that the
nuns considered selling their old home in Ascot Vale. A
portion of the land was in fact subdivided and sold.
Crisis was averted when, thanks to the fund raising efforts
of the Mercy schools in the area, they were presented
with £1000.
In the end, though, it was the frugality of the nuns that
helped the most to meet the debt. Poverty was kept in
the forefront of their thinking; they were almost on the
breadline.
The building of stuccoed brick on 3 levels was opened on
2nd November 1930.
The opening proved a grand occasion and was broadcast
on 3DB.

Avendo vissuto nella zona di Rosanna dal 1977, sono
sempre stata affascinata dalla storia locale e ho spesso
tentato di immaginare come potesse essere la vita ai
primi del 900.
Una volta cominciato a lavorare al Centro Assisi nel 2012,
figuratevi l’eccitamento al prospetto di poter esplorare la
ricca storia del Convento di Rosanna. Prima di tutto ho
visitato i piani superiori dove erano alloggiate le suore,
tentando di contemplare la vita delle novizie degli Anni
30, e ciò ha stuzzicato la mia fantasia ancora di più, ed
ho tentato di saperne di più su quella splendida struttura
che domina il giardino dell’Assisi.
Immaginate la sorpresa, in quest’era di alta tecnologia
dove per qualunque informazione è sufficiente consultare
Google, scoprire che sul convento non c’era alcuna
notizia disponibile. Ho trovato l’assenza d’informazioni
da una parte frustrante, ma anche intrigante.
Nella mia ricerca mi sono messa al lavoro in maniera più
tradizionale, recandomi alla biblioteca di Ivanhoe che ha
una sala dedicata alla storia locale, e dove il personale si
è rivelato premuroso e gentilissimo, forse perché
con l’avvento di computer e motori di ricerca, la
biblioteca è sempre meno frequentata.
La crisi finanziaria è stata scongiurata grazie alle
scuole dell’ordine delle suore misericordiose che
hanno iniziato una campagna di raccolta fondi,
riuscendo a raccogliere mille sterline, e grazie alla
parsimonia esercitata dalle suore, che rasentando il
livello di povertà, sono comunque riuscite ad onorare
il debito.
Il convento una struttura in mattoni a tre piani è stato
inaugurato il 2 novembre del 1930. L’occasione è
stata di tale rilievo da meritare una diretta radiofonica
dell’emittente 3DB.
La vera inaugurazione c’è stata due settimane più tardi
con l’arrivo delle novizie con i loro bauli, che hanno
dovuto trasportare per tre rampe di scale.
Il loro primo pasto assieme lo hanno consumato in
assoluto silenzio, non perché fossero di clausura, ma
perché nella fretta non avevano chiesto il permesso di
poter comunicare tra loro.
Il terreno e la costruzione del Convento di Rosanna e’
costato complessivamente 50.000 sterline.
Nelle polverose librerie della biblioteca, tra
centinaia di libri e giornali, ho finalmente trovato
un tomo, The Labourers’ friends’ scritto da
Maree G Allen che da pagina 219 a pagina 223,
documentava la storia del Convento di Rosanna.
Nel 1927 le suore hanno acquistato da un
gruppo di commercialisti di Ascot Vale, St
James Park Estate, una proprietà di 25 acri,
che comprendeva quattro case private che
davano sulla Rosanna Rd e altri 9 acri che si
estendevano fino a McCrae Rd, adibiti a frutteto.
Nel 1938 hanno acquisito un altro terreno lungo
la vicina Coorie Crescent, che apparteneva alla
signora Eliza McAuley. Nella piantagione di
pini di circa 5 acri sorgevano altre due case, un
cottage e una splendida costruzione in legno in
stile Queen Anne risalente al 1903.
La prima pietra è stata posata il 10 ottobre del
1928, ma i problemi economici per costruire il
convento con 107 stanze per le novizie, sono
iniziati subito.
Nel 1930 le difficoltà finanziarie erano tali
che le suore hanno contemplato seriamente
la cessione della loro sede di Ascot Vale per
costruire il nuovo convento (una porzione del
terreno è stato in effetti venduto e lottizzato).

Bus outings are one of the most essential components of
the Assisi Centre’s ongoing activities program. Our agenda
is planned to ensure that outings are interesting and
educational as well as provide an element of fun in order to
appeal to the broadest possible group.
Aside from our monthly forays to the library, St Claire/St
Francis tours, shopping trips and Men’s Group excursions,
we also offer participants a range of options such as cafes,
cinemas, sporting events, galleries and stage shows. The
Assisi Centre is surrounded by an abundance of sweeping
native parklands and we seek to take full advantage of
them, particularly during the warmer months.
Our outings program aims to accommodate the interests
and social needs of residents, whilst encouraging interaction
and independence.
Residents are encouraged to take an active role in
suggesting future attractions and family members are also
welcome to attend. Our bus is wheelchair accessible.
Some of this year’s most popular attractions have included
the Eureka Skydeck, Ten Pin Bowling, the Shrine of
Remembrance, Williamstown Beach, the Melbourne
Museum and the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Social outings are vital to maintaining the quality of life of our
residents, creating a caring and stimulating environment
that supports them in living their lives to the fullest.

Le gite in autobus sono una componente essenziale
del programma di attività del Centro Assisi.
Le gite in autobus, munito di pedana elevatrice per
le sedie a rotelle, sono pianificate e mirate ad avere
contenuti educativi oltre che interessanti e divertenti
per tutti i partecipanti.
A parte le nostre visite mensili in biblioteca, quelle
presso St Claire e St Francis, lo shopping e l’escursione
del gruppo maschile, offriamo ai residenti una vasta
gamma di opzioni, dal cinema, al caffè, alle gallerie
d’arte, dagli eventi sportivi a quelli teatrali.
Il nostro programma di attività ed escursioni tenta
di andare incontro agli interessi ed accontentare
le esigenze sociali dei residenti, incoraggiando
indipendenza e interazione.

The biggest goal when planning any type of activity for
residents with dementia is to make them feel successful at
whatever they choose to participate in.
Activities staff provide a broad range of meaningful activities
for residents in St Claire dementia unit. Some of the most
popular pastimes include ten pin bowling, bocce, floor bobs
and balloon tennis and the monthly birthday celebrations.
The weekly tombola session is also well attended. Visitors
are often surprised to see participants intently focussed on
their cards and family members often join in. The aroma
of percolated coffee always draws a large crowd to Coffee
Club on Wednesdays and the fortnightly St Claire/St Francis
bus tours inevitably include a sojourn for homemade gelato.
Research suggests that exercise can provide a range of
benefits to those coping with dementia. We are pleased
to announce the return of Gillian and her Golden Years
Brain Fitness program, a holistic approach to dementia
care that incorporates validation, reminiscence and reality
orientation along with more traditional exercise regimes.
Both carers and activity staff are encouraged at all times
to look beyond the dementia, to the individual. Fulfilling the
individual needs of people with dementia is paramount to
their social and emotional wellbeing.

Quando si pianificano attività per persone anziane affette
da demenza, è di primaria importanza che i partecipanti
si sentano appagati e di successo in qualunque esercizio o
funzione scelgano di fare.
Il personale del Programma attività del Centro Assisi ha
elaborato una serie di esercizi e passatempi per i residenti
del padiglione demenza S.Claire. Tra i più popolari il bowling,
il gioco delle bocce, il tennis con i palloncini, le celebrazioni
mensili dei compleanni e la tombola settimanale che è
sempre molto frequentata.

Visitatori sono spesso sorpresi nel vedere i residenti
focalizzati e concentrati sulle loro cartelle, e spesso i
familiari si uniscono a loro.
L’aroma del caffè attrae sempre le folle al Club Caffè del
mercoledì mentre la gita in autobus ogni due settimane,
include inevitabilmente una ‘pausa gelato’.

Numerose ricerche hanno evidenziato i grandi benefici dei
gentili esercizi fisici per persone affette da demenza.
Siamo felicissimi di poter annunciare il ritorno di Gillian e
la sua ‘Palestra celebrare degli Anni d’oro’, un approccio
olistico alla cura della demenza che include conferme e
omologazione, memorie e ricordi e orientamento attuale,
oltre ad un regime di esercizi più tradizionale e ortodosso.
Sia i badanti che il personale del Programma attività vengono
costantemente incoraggiati a guardare oltre la malattia, e
concentrarsi sull’individuo. Appagare i bisogni individuali
delle persone affette da demenza è importantissimo per il
loro benessere sociale ed emotivo.

Golf Day
The 2015 annual Toccolan Golf Day was
held on 23 March at the picturesque
Kew Golf Club. It was an enjoyable day’s
golf followed by a delicious presentation
dinner with guests entertained by host
and Hawthorn Football Club legend
Robert DiPierdomenico (Dipper).
All proceeds from the day were donated
to the Assisi Centre which has now been
the beneficiary of this annual golf day
since 2012. The very generous amount
of $5,000 was raised on the day.
The Poli Wing
The Assisi Centre has been very
fortunate to receive a very generous
donation of $5 million from Mr.
Armando Poli and family, honouring
the wishes of his parents.
In recognition of this, the building
housing St Catherine and St Claire
units has been named: The Cav.
Giovanni Antonio & Maria Poli Building.
A dedication plaque adorns the
entrance to the building.
Archbishop Celli
The residents at the Assisi Centre
were honoured by a special visit from
His Excellency Archbishop Claudio
Maria Celli who celebrated Holy Mass
on Friday, 8th May, in the auditorium.
Archbishop Celli graciously gave of
his time to mingle and share light
refreshments after mass was finished.
The Migrant Project
The project is almost complete and will
shortly adorn the wall of the Galleria in
the Plaza.
Some truly interesting stories have
emerged from this project. We are very
grateful to Pamela Galli and the Galli
Foundation for their generous donation
ensuring that the rich history and
cherished memories of our residents
are preserved.
Dairy & Fracture Study
This fully funded study is being
undertaken by the University of
Melbourne and Austin Health. In
September 2014 the Assisi Centre was
approached by Melbourne University
Principal Investigator in the above
study, Dr. Sandra Luliano regarding the
willingness of our residents to become
involved in baseline testing for the
research.
On 17 February we received notification
that the baseline testing was complete
and the Assisi Centre selected as one
of the randomised intervention sites
for the ongoing research over the
next 2 years. This includes the Assisi
Centre providing ongoing fall report
summaries and other clinical data and
working with the the Assisi Centre’s
Chef to review the menu to include 4
dairy serves per day for each resident.
Assisi Centre - Food Safety Program
As part of the Assisi Centre’s continuous
improvement, the organisation is
conducting a Food Safety audit as well
as reviewing and updating our Food
Safety Program.
This program will be inclusive of
procedures for the monitoring of
Incoming Goods, Storing, Production,
Cooking, Chilling, Plating, Reheating &
transporting food to Dining Rooms. In
addition to this, there will be a review
and update of all hazard analysis
charts, food handling policies, cleaning
procedures and checklists as well as
monitoring records supporting hazard
controls. The Assisi Centre will also
ensure that catering and cleaning staff
are appropriately equipped through
further training and education.
St Francis Nursing Home
Refurbishment
We are excited that the long awaited
refurbishment will commence on 10th
August. To minimise the impact on the
residents and to ensure the continuity
of care, the project will be completed in
7 stages. Family members will be kept
informed as to the progress.
Generous Grant- Elsi Smart Floor
System
The Assisi Centre has been notified
by the Pamela & Lorenzo Charitable
Trust Foundation that our submission
for the implementation for Smart Floor
Technology re St Francis has been
successful.
The organisation has received a $50,000
grant with a further $33,000 grant to be
received in 2016 which will fully fund
the implementation of this technology.
RMIT Chiropractic students
The Collaborative Student Placement
Program between the Assisi Centre
and the School of Health Science,
RMIT University, will be commencing
in August, 2015.
Students will be attending the Assisi
Centre and providing treatment to
residents wanting to take part in the
program.
Appointment of Sister JiJi
Sr. Jiji from the Congregation of the
Missionary Sisters of St Anthony Mary
Claret is commencing on 1st August.
Sister Jiji will join Sister Ana and
Antoinette, our Pastoral Co-ordinator,
in providing spiritual and emotional
support to our residents.
Appointment of Chef
We are happy to announce the
appointment of Giulio Gencarelli
(Jules), as our Chef Manager. He will
commence on 17th August. Giulio
comes to us with a wealth of experience
in Italian cuisine and will no doubt
bring his expertise to the Assisi Centre
menu.

Casa di cura e di riposo del Centro
Assisi sono stati onorati della visita di

Monsignor Celli si è gentilmente
intrattenuto con i residenti al termine
della santa messa
Progetto Immigrazione
Il progetto è stato portato a termine e
presto foto e filmati, adorneranno la
Galleria della piazza del Centro Assisi.
La nostra gratitudine per la generosa
offerta che ha reso possibile questo
progetto che mantiene e preserva la
ricca se interessante storia dei nostri
residenti, alla signora Pamela Galli e
alla Fondazione Galli.
Studio sulle fratture e la dieta a base
di prodotti caseari
Lo studio è stato finanziato e condotto
dall’università di Melbourne e da
Austi Health. Nel settembre 2014
il Centro Assisi è stato contattato
dalla dottoressa Sandra Luliano,
principale ricercatrice dell’Università di
Melbourne, per verificare la possibilità
di partecipare allo studio.
Il 17 febbraio abbiamo ricevuto
conferma che la nostra adesione era
stata approvata e per i prossimi due
anni, il Centro Assisi fornirà rapporti
e dati clinici ai ricercatori mentre
il nostro Chef lavorerà con loro per
elaborare un menù giornaliero che
includa 4 porzioni di prodotti caseari
per i nostri residenti.
Centro Assisi - Sicurezza nella
preparazione del cibo
Nell’ambito del continuo processo
di miglioramento del Centro Assisi,
abbiamo intrapreso una revisione della
sicurezza nella preparazione del cibo.
Il programma di sicurezza nella
preparazione del cibo includerà
tutte le procedure di monitoraggio
di produzione, fornitura, trasporto,
stoccaggio, preparazione, congelamento,
impiattamento, riscaldamento di vivande
e servizio nelle sale da pranzo. Inoltre
verrà avviata una revisione completa di
tutte le misure di sicurezza per far sì che
non ci siano rischi o pericoli collegati
alla gestione di cibi, le procedure di
pulizia e i monitoraggi di controllo.
Corsi approfonditi di addestramento
sulla maniera più sicura di gestire cibi,
sono stati organizzati per gli addetti alle
pulizie, oltre a quelli della ristorazione
del Centro Assisi.
Ristrutturazione della Casa di riposo
St Francis
I lavori di ristrutturazione sono iniziati
il 10 agosto scorso. Per minimizzare
disagi per i residenti e garantire
continuità di assistenza, il progetto
verrà eseguito in sette fasi. I familiari
dei residenti saranno costantemente
informati sui progressi dei lavori.
Generosa Sovvenzione per il Sistema
di pavimentazione intelligente Elsie
La fondazione caritatevole Pamela
& Lorenzo Galli ci ha recentemente
informati che la nostra richiesta
per l’attuazione di un nuovo sistema
tecnologico
di
pavimentazione
intelligente con sensori capaci di
riconoscere l’identità di chi cammina.
Il Centro Assisi ha ricevuto un primo
finanziamento di $ 50.000, con il
secondo di $ 35.000 previsto nel 2016,
che ci permetterà di installare la nuova
tecnologia.
Studenti di Chiropratica e Chiroterapia
dell’RMIT
La collaborazione tra il Centro

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;
I look at the future,
I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing young of their own
And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known.
I’m now an old woman ...and nature is cruel;
‘Tis jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells
And now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys
I remember the pain
And I’m loving and living life over again.
I think of the years ....all too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

not very wise
Uncertain of habit with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, “I do wish you’d try!”
Who seems not to notice the things that you do
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.....
Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill....
Is that what you’re thinking? Is that what you see?
