The team t was introduced to the n new staff at the t Bureau’s now perman ent on in Malaysia. Also, we met m with the newly appoin nted locatio World Events Direc ctor, Stephen n Peck. The World W Scout Comm mittee nomina ated Peter Bla atch as the Committee’s C liaison n person for tthe WJJT. em was a link k with “The G Goals”. TheGo oals.org is a free, f the glo obal education n and learnin ng portal on sustainable s dev velopment so olutions. It is a partnership with among gst oth hers, UNESCO O, WOSM and d Lund University. An upgraded ve ersion of Jam Puz was pres sented as well as sev veral on-line challenges th hat could be entered on our Fac cebook page. The Digital C Campfire pre esented by JOT TI.tv was enh hanced and in ncluded a live e Scout video ocha at facility. The WJJT W had mon nthly on-line meetings leading up to th he JOTA-JOTI event, tto work on th he focal pointts agreed in tthe eting. Also so ome challenge es needed to o be Kuala Lumpur mee solved d. The event web site was s consolidated d and upgrad ded with extra e features s. A new sign n-up and registration syste em was planned to run n on the main n Scout.org web w site. Howev ver, this appe eared to be much m more difficult to implem ment with the e hired contrractor than an nticipated. The numbers are calculated based on the received National Reports and the membership numbers of each Scout Association. Total Participants Scouts Guides Total Participants JOTA-JOTI Stations Radio Amateurs Visitors Active Countries Average Participants per Station The way that JOTI participation was reported in the past, however, differs from the JOTA statistics. So not all graphs may be comparable with previous years, simply because we count JOTA and JOTI as one event now. For 2015 we see less participants than the previous year. Variations in numbers do occur from one year to the next, as we are dependent on what information the NJC’s send us. The code, th he "JID", indiccates the coun ntry and WOSSM region of the participantts. JID codes are issued to JO OTA‐JOTI locattions (not individual participants). Oveer 2,500 JID co odes were issu ued in 2014 4, and this incrreased to over 5,000 in 201 15. The changes made to tthe registratio on system in 2 2015 enab bled JID codes to be automaatically issued to those registtering for JOTTA‐JOTI duringg the event. Following feedbacck from JamPu uz in 2014, we e introduced additio onal 'bingo' caards for JamPu uz 2015. At the registration n stage, each location was a asked whetther they intended to take part in JamPu uz; only 16% said they werre not going to o take part in JamPuz Afterr JOTA‐JOTI th here was an op pportunity to complete a feedback form on JamPuz. Th hank you to th he 1,000+ peop ple that took the time to answer our questions. The ressponses will h help us to develop JamP Puz further forr 2016. 94% reported thatt they enjoyed d JamPuz. We tried to stress in 2015 that JJamPuz was about "convversations nott contacts". U Unfortunately, we still received reports o of lots of peop ple starting the eir online conversation with "JID please" aand then closiing the conversation as so oon as they haad a JID. This is neither in the e Scouting spiirit nor the pu urpose of JamPuz. Som me games and activities s were cance elled this yea ar. The main focus was sset to communicate with h other Scouts in and outsiide Austria. JO OTI: A challe enge was pro oposed to Scout S Groupss chat with Twitter T webcelebrities a and many grroups achiev ved the e task. At the moment the challe enge was p proposed Tw witter had a explosion of the hash htag #eunojjoti (# #meonjoti) h hitting the mark m of 14108 tweets. Facebook is s used since five years ago, Twitter was the fiirst ex xperience and d had excitin ng results. Wo orking together like ha appens with h the WJJT T, Scouts off Brazil willl certainly iimprove and increase its pa articipation in n JOTA-JOTII weekend ne ext year. Some chat c subjectss included th he use of alternattive fuels in our country,, favorite mo ovies, cittizenship req quirements, school work and a discu ssion about a fox x getting into a chicken coop in Austtralia and ste ealing a chicken! Eig ght Croatian Scout group ps took part in the conte est JOTI CRO OATIA and there were e 235 participants in the e chat room on Croatian channel. Tw wenty Scouts s carried outt the activity y in Varaždin n called “On the t strreets of Vara aždin” which was organiz zed by their Scout group p, in cooperation with Amateur Radio Club "Međimurje"" from Čakov vec. The participants chatted with w Scouts from f the Nettherlands, UK, Sweden, Bulgaria, Bra razil, Spain and a Finland. ZIK SIH FM (Z Zagreb studio o) had their own program day from 12.00 A.M. Between the presenttations of the e groups the ere was a my ystery to solve at which involv ved a large number n of groups. This y year, many Swiss Scout stations pre esent his gro oup. Th he difficulty o of persuading stations to o remember to file a rep port is a problem that h has not ease ed despite be eing able to do so online e. From the reports many are most gra ateful to the e Radio Amatteurs and Clubs who ha ave helped th hem. Once again a it is en ncouraging to o learn of yo oung op perators who o have gained Licences as a a result off taking partt in JOTA Fro om those sta ations reporting it seems clear that there are ple enty of rew warding contacts around d. Those who o can call on n better aerials have an im mproved chan nce of those Scout conta acts abroad b but even quite modest antennas a can n produce un nexpected rew wards and y youngsters are not alway ys bothered by the distance of the contact - it’s enough bein ng on the rad dio. Modest stations see em most relu uctant to rep port but therre is plenty to be learnt ffrom a small station and d without some feedback it is hard to offfer help for the future. Radio Operators O 5 The amateur rradio station 9M4WSB off the World S Scout Bureau u in Kuala Lumpur operated JOTA-JOTI directly d from m the new pre emises of the Bureau in downtown Kuala K Lumpu ur, Malaysia.. A number n of lo ocal Scout grroups from Kuala K Lumpu ur visited the e sta ation and ass sisted in run nning it. They y also activa ated social me edia pages a and ran IRC on internet with w Scouts world-wide. The radio ante ennas were installed on top t of the bu uilding, on the e 20th floor, whilst the Bureau offices are on the e 17th floor. The main ante enna was a 4-band 4 V-dip pole which ju ust fitted on the e roof space. The Bureau u does not have h a perma anent antenna on the e roof yet, as a we had in Geneva. 23 Visittors ? Countries s 67 mboree on the Airr – Jamb Jam boree on the Inte ernet 2 2015 W World Sc cout Ja ambo oree Durin ng the summeer time of 2015, the 23rd Wo orld Scout Jamboree was held d in Yamaguch hi, Japan. Som me 33,000 Scoouts and G Guides campeed together on n an immense campsite, comp parable to a sm mall city. Not only were the ese Scouts andd Guide es to be fed, tthey had a hosspital on site, a daily newsppaper was p printed and all communicattion facilities w were in place.. The multi‐beam antenna masst and the dipole antennas com ming from two other mastss carried the rradio signals o over the e globe. During sunlight houurs it was nott easy to get o out of Asia, but as so oon as the sunn started to se et, the rest off the wo orld was within reach. On ne of the highlights was thee scheduled co ontact with the Intternational Space Station annd the Jamboree. An exxtensive Amatteur Radio Staation was in place with the call sign 8 8N23WSJ. Stattion managerr Tat Mochiki, JH1FEL, and hhis team of 19 Japanese Radio Scou uters installed an electrical mast, cablin ng, Wi‐Fi and tenting. Due tto a passing tyyphoon, the equip pment could n not be installeed until only a few days beffore the sttart of the Jam mboree. By th hat time the in nternational Servicce Team mem mbers of the crew were on ssite and thus able to givve a helping hand. A sselected group p of 20 youth participants w were all able tto askk questions to o the astronauuts. This was a a thrill to many. As one Colombian S Scout said: “I just talked to an astronautt. Ho ow can I explain this to my m mom and dad d? They will neever believe me….!” A n nice touch to tthe contact w was that we we ere able to see the e ISS coming a across the nighht sky, while w we talked to tthe cre ew on board. The sstaff team con nsisted of an in nternational ggroup of Scou t leade ers (from Japan, Zimbabwe,, Philippines, T Taiwan, Germ many, Icelan nd, Finland, Australia, UK, B Brazil, USA and The Nethe erlands). The main headquarter area oof the camp fe eatured a JOTA A‐ JOTTI information n an promotioon stand in the WOSM “Bettter Wo orld” tent. The e stand attraccted many inte ernational visitors, who cou uld try their bbest in decodin ng Morse, listtening to shorrt‐wave radio and playing w with the electrronic gad dgets. The sstation located d in the JOTA‐‐JOTI Plaza, was part of thee Science Activity areea. For the neext 10 days, ea ach activity daay, 400 SScouts and guiides visited th he station and d were offeredd a wide range of activvities: Morsse code practicce, with a real Morse code paper tape w writer. Am mongst the disstinguished vissitors was the e Crown Princee of Jap pan; he was distracted by thhe Morse cod de noise, and divverted his tour towards thee Irish Scouts tthat were doin ng this activity. Som me nervous faaces of officials were detectted wh hen he decided to talk a bit longer at thiss event beforee he mo oved on. Obstaacle course, w where a blind‐folded participant had to c over some e distance with h obstacles, also carrying w water from on e side tto the other, w whilst instructted by hand‐h held radio on where to move nexxt. Fox h hunting, findin ng different fo oxes out in the e field using a regular FM transisttor radio. Thee foxes were lo ow‐power transmitters with aa range of abo out 10 meterss, each produccing a differrent sound. The Crown Princce of Saudi Ara rabia tried outt our electronics dissplay. And paccks of Japanesse Cub Scouts enjoyed our fam mous tin‐can ttelephone. Introd duction to diggital radio modes like DSTAR and Echolinnk. And o of course, participation in the short‐wave radio trafficc. All the equipment was provided d for by ICOM,, including an on‐ site aa technician fo or support. This included tra ansceivers an d amplifiers.
