The town is characterized by a very particular panorama:it is hemmed in between two big rocks, the Sottana one with the remains of a Saracen tower, and the Soprana one (on which there stands a Franciscan monastery),a “piece” of the Montagna Vecchia where archaeological excavations can be visited.Below, there is the Due Rocche waterfall, the picturesque leap in the San Leonardo stream.Behind the town there is the beautiful Ficuzza wood. Corleone, about whose origins historical documents tell us very little, might go back to the 5th millennium BC,on the Montagna Vecchia:here the traces have been discovered of an ancient human settlement and a necropolis. This could be the town of Schera of which Cicero speaks, destroyed during the second Punic War,whose inhabitants would have moved downstream, founding a new place,Corleone. Occupata dagli Arabi nel IX secolo, conquistata dai Normanni nell’XI secolo, nel XIII Occupied by the Arabs in the 9th century, conquered by the Normans in the 11th century,in the thirteenth century it was populated by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen with colonies of Curiosità/Curiosity I titoli Una città “animosa”, i cui abitanti si sono sempre distinti per il coraggio e per la voglia di libertà, tanto che proprio per il coraggio dimostrato nelle occasioni più gravi le sono state attribuite, nel corso dei secoli, molte onorificenze: fu città demaniale, ovvero alle dirette dipendenze dell’imperatore, per lo Stupor Mundi; fu la soror mea del Senato palermitano nel 1282, quando Corleone si schierò con la capitale contro gli Angioini nella rivolta passata alla storia con il nome di Vespri Siciliani; e fu l’animosa civitas di Carlo V, che con questo titolo le riconobbe l’animo valoroso. The titles A “bold”town, whose inhabitants are always distinguished by courage and desire for liberty,so much so that precisely the courage shown on the most serious occasions have earned it,during over the centuries,a lot of honours:it was a demesnal town,i.e.one coming directly under the emperor, for Stupor Mundi;it was the soror mea of the Palermo Senate in 1282, when Corleone sided with the capital against the Angevins in the revolt that went down in history with the name Sicilian Vespers;and it was the animosa civitas of Charles V,who recognized its valorous soul with this title. From the Vespers to Garibaldi It is worth looking a little more closely into the history of the heroism of this town. After siding with Palermo against the Angevins in the fourteenth century, giving rise to the Sicilian Vespers,Corleone also had major roles in later history.Although it was subdued many, many times from the Middle Ages on,the town always succeeded in freeing itself, obtaining,in 1440,the privilege of being a free commune by paying 400 florins; it freed itself of the “attachment”of 1621 by paying 15,200 once, proudly collected by the whole population. In 1812 the Municipal Council of Corleone was granted the title of “senate”and in 1848 Corleone had its season of uprisings (here Francesco Bentivegna was born and worked) preparing the area for the arrival of Garibaldi. And it was precisely at Corleone that Garibaldi was to lure the Bourbon troops into a trap, making them believe he wanted to “free”the town while the bulk of the Redshirts marched on Palermo. Il CIDMA The International Centre for Documentation on the Mafias and of the Anti-mafia Movement, for the purpose of spreading knowledge and sensitizing civic society regarding the forms of struggle against the mafioso phenomenon, promotes the study of the mafioso phenomenon and of similar criminal phenomena, and also that of the history of the anti-mafia movement and of the people that have been – and are – an active part of it.The centre also promotes the study and in-depth examination of legislative tools that allow a more effective fight against organized crime, today unfortunately very active in spheres like that of the exploitation of clandestine immigration and the laundering the dirty money. For this reason CIDMA has a rich patrimony of documents, constantly updated, among which the proceedings of the three maxi-trials against the mafia prepared by the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino (in the photo). 72 COMMUNES GUIDE Georgofili a Firenze (1993). Divided into a nave and two aisles,San Domenico Church has the architectural plan typical of the seventeenth century and contains a lot of paintings commissioned between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among these we can mention the canvas depicting St.Thomas Aquinas (nineteenth century),a very beautiful one, just like the sixteenth-century font. Sant’Agostino Church dates from the fourteenth century, though it was heavily altered in the Baroque epoch.Inside it there is a beautiful painting by Giuseppe Ribera depicting The Martyrdom of St.Bartholomew as well as a big canvas reproducing moments in the life of St. Augustine. Adjacent to the church, the very beautiful Sant’Agostino Oratory was recently restored. It is a room whose walls are entirely covered by frescoes, stuccoes, pictures and paintings on wood. The faithful are welcomed by the wooden statue of The Madonna of Succour, known also as Madonna of the Club, which is at the centre of the wall opposite the entrance. 78 is a still active Franciscan monastery and here archaeological excavations have brought the remains of ancient human settlements to light. The Ficuzza hamlet A few kilometres separate Corleone from the Ficuzza hamlet, which arose around the hunting lodge built for Ferdinand IV of Bourbon at the beginning of the nineteenth century. When the Bourbons returned to Naples, the “green”treasure was the object of vandalistic actions serving to turn the wood into pastures and hence into “good”land for the latifundium people. The struggles that accompanied the attempts to take possession of the lands very soon emptied the village of its inhabitants. With the Unification of Italy, ownership of the wood was assigned to the Demesne of the Kingdom, and the Cancelliere, Ficuzza and Lupo woods assigned to the Forestry Administration. Thus salvage work began and in 1901 the area became a climatic station with the title “Inalienable national Wood of Ficuzza.” Azienda Foreste Demaniali Regional Demesnal Forestry Board distaccamento di Ficuzza Ficuzza branch tel. 091 8464062 Centro Lipu Ficuzza tel. COMMUNES GUIDE The hunting reserve of king “Nasone” Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, known as king “Nasone”(big nose),having fallen in love with the wood that soon he chose as his personal hunting reserve, called on the architect Venanzio Marvuglia to build an abode here worthy of its guest. The Palermitan architect (1724-1814) designed a sober but elegant building, in the classical style of the Baroque of some English country residences of the same period. The lodge very much resembles the royal palace in Caserta but,in the place of the beautiful Campania garden, it boasts at its back one of the most important nature reserves on the island. The building, called “Casina”, was recently restored, giving back its beauty to Marvuglia’s architectural project. It is complete with a wine cellar, private chapel, representation rooms, as well as stables and “ordinance” stores. Unfortunately nothing is extant of the original furniture because much of this was plundered by the inhabitants of the place and the nearby villages during the nineteenth-century revolts. Moreover,in the royal building some of the prisoners that had run away from the Bourbon prisons because of the Palermo revolts took shelter here. The livestock of the royal reserve was killed and everything that was transportable – furniture, tapestries, pictures – was stolen. On that occasion,in 1820,even the bells of the church disappeared. What had managed to escape those hordes was recovered by the successor of Ferdinand I of Bourbon,Ferdinando II,known as the Bomb King. Thus in 1831 the royal building became little more than a farm. Today the building is used as a visitor centre by the body managing the reserve, the Regional Demesnal Forestry Board, and it is open to visitors. What speaks to us of the king inside the wood is the so-called King’s Pulpit, a sort of enormous throne hewn out of a rock on which His Majesty rested during his endless hunts, and the Fishery, remains of a building that served to manage from close up the waters of the meteoric lake and its fauna. Also, scattered here and there among the dense vegetation there are the boundary walls of the complex system conceived by the Bourbon so that his passion for hunting would not jeopardize the number of animals to hunt: there were also areas reserved for repopulation (the Reserve is presented on page 206).
