Domus li ha incontrati nella sede di Tubes nel trevigiano, dove hanno raccontato le tappe e le dinamiche di un percorso lungo 25 anni e le sue ultime evoluzioni, sotto il segno dell’innovazione Starting with a family business strongly rooted in its territory, the Crosettas began provoking the market, bringing design to the unexplored field of radiators. Domus visited them at the Tubes factory in the Veneto region, where they recounted the phases and dynamics of a 25-year course and its new evolutions under the banner of innovation Cristiano Crosetta “A tutti noi Crosetta piacciono le cose belle: nostra madre faceva lavori a maglia, aveva una piccola attività per realizzare capi per l’esercito; nostro padre faceva il falegname, ha passato a noi figli lo spirito del saper fare, la volontà di andare avanti. Seen here, the radiator assembly department; bottom, profiles of the Soho radiator stocked in the aluminium warehouse. This page: from left, Nicola Di Battista with the Crosetta partners Cristiano, Franco and Renzo Tubes è nata ufficialmente nel 1992 a seguito di un’esperienza trentennale nel settore della termoidraulica. Agli inizi dell’attività, l’azienda era divisa in tanti comparti. Renzo, in particolar modo, lavorava, sugli impianti industriali e ha imparato a muoversi all’interno dell’industria. All’artigiano bisognava rubare i segreti della professione. It was clear at once that the prospects were very encouraging. Indeed the market seemed to have been waiting precisely for a product of this kind. We were the first to make designed tubular radiators and, later, again the first to modify the shape of the traditional tubular product. When we started out, this sector was dominated by traditional cast-iron or multicolumn products that were normally installed under the window and hidden by a curtain, creating problems with heat distribution in the room. Our innovation consisted in having offered a product made with advanced technology, using very thin elements supplied in more than 200 colour variants and in bespoke dimensions. The possibility of personalising the object, and allowing users to satisfy their aesthetic sense, is a key factor. For us Italians, it is a factor that improves the quality of our lives. A further important step in the growth of Tubes was the creation of our Elements collection in 2003, entrusted to a world-famous designer. This marked a turning point on our own market too, because after having offered a thoughtfully detailed and customisable product that performed an already existing function, we came up with an object whose appearance was no longer immediately identifiable with that of a radiator. This turning point involved a number of issues, because it was not simple to get people to accept radiators like the add-On by Satyendra Pakhalé or the Square by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. These objects were perceived almost as paintings or sculptures. What ensued was an epochal passage that identified us as an operation with a vocation for research and development, a company with its mind tuned to a Tubes was officially established in 1992, following 30 years of experience in the heating and plumbing business. The founding partners owned an installation company and a showroom that sold bathroom appliances, taps, ceramic tiles and radiators. But it occurred to them that their product range was incomplete; it lacked an aesthetically pleasing radiator with carefully crafted details that was lightweight and made with innovative technology. So one of my partners – my uncle Renzo Crosetta – was appointed by the other brothers to find out whether and in what ways to develop a line of heating products that would possess these characteristics. His research, which later formed the basis of the future Tubes, surveyed the useful technology available on the market and the products that would be easiest to make and sell. And so we started with the first tubular radiators nearly 25 years ago, together with two other firms that over “All of us Crosettas like things of beauty. Our mother had a small knitwear business, making sweaters for the army. Our father was a carpenter, and he passed down to us the spirit of doing a good job and the will to forge ahead. In their day, people thought only of working every day of the week, Saturdays and Sundays included.” Franco Crosetta domus 1009 Gennaio / January 2017 CORIANDOLI / CONFETTI 39 • Opposite page: the processing and assembly department for heated towel rails. This passage owes a lot to our close relations with Palomba Serafini Associati. No designer had ever previously thought of working on a technical product like the radiator. In the beginning, Tubes was divided into lots of departments. Renzo, in particular, worked on industrial systems and learnt to find his way around within the industry. Everything that he learnt he then passed on to those around him. He has always taken trouble to teach new apprentices so as to ensure continuity, it being important to build a system that isn’t hinged on one or two persons, but on a team proper. In the old days people used to guard their trade jealously. The craftsman had to be robbed of the secrets of his profession. Currently there is a lack of professional schools; no state school has invested in technical know-how. More company internships ought to be organised. We are a big family and, as in all families, we argue and make peace, and everybody tries to go ahead with their own thinking. What matters is having trust in persons, identifying the particular capacities and skills in each of them and respecting them. I may be experienced in matters of market strategy, but I can’t tell my father Augusto, or Renzo or Franco which machine to use to make a given item, because I don’t have their technical skills. All partners can bring their own thinking to bear on each area, because the most correct assessment does not necessarily stem from specific experience in a given field. We are aware of our capacities. Renzo’s son Riccardo, and Franco’s daughter Antonia are actually younger than I, but like me This page, from top left: Cristiano Crosetta and Nicola Di Battista in the Tubes factory; the Origami radiator designed by Alberto Meda in 2016, a high-efficiency electric model conceived as a heated room-dividing screen. The wall version turns into a towelheating rack, where towels are rolled up and hidden when the radiator is closed, optimising space they belong to the second generation, and they have been working in the business for quite some time, to try to understand what can be done in the future. Riccardo follows in his father’s footsteps in research and development, whereas Antonia reentered the firm after a study period and now has a different responsibility: brand promotion management with external professionals. We have begun organising training workshops for professionals, in collaboration with the Italian association of architects, as well as in-house training courses. This is a sector that started quietly, perhaps because we had never felt the necessity for it. When Antonia joined us we understood better how inconclusive it was to take part in major trade fairs devoted to architects, to produce catalogues based on the architect’s profile and to communicate through magazines without these investments being followed up and managed by us at the firm through the continuity of a direct dialogue with the professionals concerned. The Tubes company started from a family-oriented craft approach firmly rooted in its territory; it now employs more than 80 people. We are constantly evolving and experiencing a profound transformation on all fronts: the optimisation and computerisation of production processes, commercial expansion, the branching out of our product range, and the extension of retail and contract channels. An important recent area of production development is what we call “plug and play” electric radiators and towel heaters, which have opened another market segment previously unexplored by design. Indeed, we now offer “transportable heat” thanks to design objects that give off warmth but do not require installation. Our discussions are always very lively. In the end however, it doesn’t matter what the product is going to cost, because we are repaid by the satisfactionwe receive from our customers when we sell it.” Renzo Crosetta
