Curriculum Vitae di UMBERTO LAFFI

Umberto Laffi è Professore Emerito dell’Università di Pisa. È stato più volte Direttore del
Dipartimento di Scienze Storiche del Mondo Antico presso la stessa Università. È stato
Coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in ‘Storia (Storia Antica)’, sedi Pisa, Pavia Perugia e
Presidente del Corso di Dottorato in Storia (Università di Pisa).
Durante gli anni accademici 1975-1976 e 1983-1984 è stato Visiting Member presso l’Institute for
Advanced Study (School of Historical Studies) di Princeton, New Jersey, USA. È stato
Distinguished Visiting professor presso la Northwestern University (USA) nell’anno accamico
2002-2003.
Fa parte di comitati scientifici nazionali ed internazionali; ha tenuto lezioni e seminari in varie
università europee ed americane, nonché in Giappone.
È Socio dell’Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei; Membro Corrispondente del Deutsches
Archäologisches Institut; Socio Corrispondente della Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Venezie;
Socio corrispondente dell’Istituto Lombardo.
Ha vinto il Premio Cassano 2005 del Decennale per la Storia.
È autore di numerose pubblicazioni scientifiche. Particolare interesse ha dedicato a problemi
politico-amministrativi dello stato romano, sia in età repubblicana sia in età imperiale. Tra gli altri
campi di ricerca coltivati: la Gallia Cisalpina e l’organizzazione delle province alpine; la
storiografia e la vita politica del I secolo a.C. a Roma; documenti bilingui greco-latini d’Asia
Minore; leggi pubbliche del popolo romano; problemi del processo romano.

Umberto Laffi is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Pisa. He taught Roma History, Greek
History, Latin Epigraphy, Roman Antiquities and Epigraphy, Greco-Roman Antiquities. He has been
several times Director of the Department of Historical Sciences of the Ancient World at the abovementioned University. He has been “Coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in ‘Storia (Storia
Antica)’, sedi Pisa, Pavia Perugia” and “Presidente del Corso di Dottorato in Storia (Università di
Pisa)”.
During the academic years 1975-76 and 1983-84, he was Visiting Member at the Institute for
Advanced Study (School of Historical Studies) in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. In 2002-2003 he
was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Northwestern University (USA).
He is a member of national and international scientific committees; he has held lectures and
seminars in several European and American universities, as well as in Japan.
He is Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei; Corresponding Member of the Deutches
Archäologisches Institut, Corresponding Member of the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Venezie;
Corresponding Member of the Istituto Lombardo.
He is awarded with the prize ‘Premio Cassano 2005 del Decennale per la Storia’.
He is the author of many scientific works. He took special interest in political-adminstrative
questions of Roman State during Republican Age and Imperial Age as well. Among the other
research fields: Cisalpine Gaul and the organization of Alpine provinces; historiography and
political life during the Ist century b.C. in Rome; Greco-Latin bilingual documents from Asia Minor;
public laws of the Roman people; problems concerning Roman trial.
