veramente poco per vedere in ognuno
delle migliaia di Terzi Raccoglitori italiani la reincarnazione di Totò che si
lamenta, ma con tutte le ragioni per
tutti i guai che sta loro procurando la
gestione delle
NewSlot ed in particolare
delle
NewSlot di nuova
generazione,
ovvero le cosiddette Comma 6/a.
In 30 anni di

so for all the trouble being caused

machines and, in particular, the latest generation NewSlot or paragraph 6/a.
In my 30 years in the coin-op
business, I have had many opportunities to witness the introduction of
new technology, with the related
problems, so I am not surprised by
problems such as premature endings, etc., however never as in the
case of the marketing of the new
paragraph 6/a machines have I
been so bewildered. In fact, who
doesn’t recall the problems involving
games in the ‘80s with the components all fitted on sockets? And the
Pac Mans soldered by hand? And
the laser games that broke just by
looking at them? And the video
poker machines that worked better
with lighters than with coins? And
the paragraph 6 machines that
taught us more about the Chinese
than the Olympics?
However, the economic and
moral catastrophe being caused by
the new paragraph 6/a at all levels,
are incomparable against any other
technological epidemic that
occurred in the past. This claim is
justified by the fact that in the previous cases, as the problem
emerged, a way was found to
resolve it, and it was clear who was
economically responsible and would
have had to ‘pay’ for the inconvenience caused. Now, on the other
hand, with these new machines
connected in a network, and with
many different parties involved yet
strictly linked together in order to
ensure the machine works online,
we can never identify the true culprit, so there is nothing else to do
but to ‘pay up and shut up’.
I don’t wish to bore you by listing
all the various cases in which there
is no option but to cry, however I
cannot fail to underline some situations that can surely be improved,

as long as there is someone in
AUTHORITY to take, or impose,
some final decisions. For example:
1) Is it normal that the leading
manufacturers of both games and
boards closed for holidays for 3 consecutive weeks when these new
games were being introduced?
2) Is it right that the boards take
months to repair?
3) Is it logical that a board is sent
from Jesolo to Padova, from Padova
to San Marino, from San Marino to
Faenza, from Faenza to Venice and
then back the same roundabout
route when in half an hour by car
you can take the board directly from
Jesolo to Venice for repair?
4) If, as it seems, these Smart
Cards melt like snow in the sun, how
come nobody has tried to find out
why?
5) If we lose 5% of the IN for
each machine being serviced, is it
normal that all the others who share
14% do nothing to not lose this?
Mr. Brunetta, if you are there,
please knock!
Now we are preparing two
important exhibitions, ProGame
Show and Enada Rome: we hope
that the many meetings will not end
up all bread and roses, but that technical solutions and bureaucratic simplifications are found to offer some
certainty, to those who buy, that
their investment will have an economic return, and not the “mathematical hope” that this will occur,
because we are a little tired of having to repeat … “and I pay!”

Changing subject now to speak
about trade shows.
I had the chance to visit the
famous American trade show held in
Las Vegas from 10 to 12
September. This is the third year
running that I have been to this exhibition, which opens the 2008/2009
season of the coin-op shows, and I
have to say it was a real disappointment. The serious crisis that is gripping the United States (the mortgage problem, the cost of petroleum,
the presidential elections etc.) has
also hit the games sector very hard,
so much so that many important
manufacturers, especially of ticket
redemptions, didn’t even have their
own stand, and I am speaking about
companies in full productivity, with
hundreds of employees, such as
Bay-Tek, 5 Star Redemption,
Coastal Amusement, etc. The parties in question justified this choice
by the significant costs of the various exhibitions they participate in.
Now they are choosing: either
AMOA in Las Vegas or IAAPA in
Orlando. The rumour is that next
year’s ASI (the trade show of the
association of manufacturers) will

degli anni ’80 con i componenti montati tutti su zoccoli? Ed i Pac Man saldati a mano? Ed i giochi laser che si
rompevano solo a guardarli? Ed i
videopoker che funzionavano più con
gli accendini che con le monete? Ed i
comma 6 che ci hanno fatto conoscere
i cinesi meglio che non con le
Olimpiadi?
Però le disgrazie sia economiche
che morali che le nuove comma 6/a ci
stanno procurando, a tutti i livelli, sono
incommensurabili e non confrontabili
con altre epidemie tecnologiche riscontrate nel passato. Tale affermazione è
giustificata dal fatto che nei casi precedenti man mano che uscivano i guai si
è sempre trovato il modo di eliminarli
oltre che ad essere ben evidente il
responsabile economico che avrebbe
“pagato” per il disagio procurato. Ora
invece, con queste nuove apparecchiature connesse in rete e con molti attori
diversamente ma strettamente connessi
fra di loro al fine di rendere l’apparecchio funzionante on-line, non si riesce
mai a trovare il vero responsabile, perciò non rimane altro che ‘pagare e
tacere’.
Non voglio annoiarvi nell’elencare
tutti i vari casi in cui non ci resta altro
che piangere, però non posso non sottolineare alcune situazioni che potrebbero sicuramente essere migliorate
sempre che ci fosse un soggetto

che prendesse, o facesse prendere,
delle decisioni definitive. Ad esempio:
1) Vi pare normale che le maggiori
ditte costruttrici sia di giochi che di
schede abbiano chiuso per ferie 3 settimane di seguito nel bel mezzo

2) Vi sembra corretto che le
schede rimangano in riparazioni
per mesi?
3) Vi sembra logico che una
scheda venga inviata da Jesolo a
Padova, da Padova a San
Marino, da San Marino a
Faenza, da Faenza a Venezia per
poi fare tutto il percorso a ritroso
quando in mezz’ora di auto si
può portare a riparare la scheda
direttamente da Jesolo a
Venezia?
4) Se, come sembra, queste

Smart Card si sciolgono come neve al
sole, è venuto in mente a nessuno di
cercare di capirne il perché?

normale che non facciano nulla per non
perderlo?

Ora ci stiamo preparando per le due
importanti fiere di settore, ProGame
Show ed Enada Roma: speriamo che i
tanti convegni non finiscano sempre e
solo a tarallucci e vino, ma che vengano
trovate delle soluzioni tecniche e semplificazioni amministrative che diano la
certezza, a chi compra, che il proprio
investimento avrà un ritorno economico, non la “speranza matematica” che
ciò accada, perché siamo un po’ stufi di
dover ripetere … “e io pago!”

fiera dei gestori americani che si è tenuta a Las Vegas dal 10 al 12 di settembre.
È il terzo anno di seguito che partecipo

ma devo dire che è stata una vera delusione. La grave crisi che attanaglia gli

anche il settore dei giochi tant’è che
molte importanti aziende produttrici,
specie di ticket redemption, non avevano neanche un loro stand, e parlo di
aziende in piena produttività con centinaia di dipendenti quali Bay-Tek, 5
Star
Redemption,
Coastal
Amusement, ecc. I diretti interessati
hanno giustificato questa scelta con i
notevoli costi delle varie fiere a cui
erano usi partecipare. Ora stanno
facendo delle scelte: o l’Amoa di Las
Vegas o la Iaapa di Orlando. Da quanto si è capito il prossimo anno l’ASI
(la fiera dell’associazione dei produttori) si unirà con Fun Expo (la fiera
delle attrazioni per FEC) per realizzare
un’unica esposizione a
marzo, mentre la Iaapa
(fiera delle attrazioni per
parchi fissi e viaggianti) si
sposterà a novembre 2009
da Orlando a Las Vegas
quindi, diversi operatori
pensano che l’AMOA avrà
serie difficoltà a sopravvivere.
In altre parole anche
negli Stati Uniti le fiere di
settore sono troppe, si stanno raggruppando per arrivare, forse, ad un’unica e
sola grande esposizione.
Esattamente come in Italia
dove da due fiere annuali si è passati a
tre e quest’anno addirittura a quattro!
APPARECCHI ESPOSTI
In sintonia con i pochi espositori e
rari visitatori (di italiani eravamo solo
in tre) anche le novità erano veramente
poche:
Videogames
Credo di aver visto il peggior
mobile, per una guida twin, della mia
vita su cui la Sega America esponeva
la nuova Sega Rally 3. Per fortuna per
l’Europa avremo un cabinet molto più
accattivante. Notevole interesse per
un’altra guida della Global VR: Need
for Speed nella inedita versione
“Carbon”. Nulla di speciale ma il
prezzo è abbordabile per cui potrebbe
avere un certo mercato anche in Italia
… se non fosse per la solita “omologa”. Il vecchio amico Frank Ballouz,
responsabile vendite della Global VR,
mi raccontava sorridendo, delle difficoltà incontrate nell’omologa della
precedente Nascar, anche se tutto
l’onere economico è stato sopportato
da un’azienda italiana, e mi ha detto
che difficilmente acconsentirà di farsi
prendere in giro per altri 6, 7 mesi da
un Istituto Italiano che pretende di
capire il programma sorgente di una
‘guida’ e dare la licenza di commercializzazione della stessa solo dopo aver
verificato che non potrà mai essere
usata come videopoker!

single event in March, while IAAPA
(the exhibition of attractions for parks
and travelling showmen) will shift to
November 2009 and from Orlando to
Las Vegas, so many operators think
that AMOA will struggle to survive.
In other words, even in the
United States there are too many
exhibitions, they are merging into,
perhaps, just one big event. Exactly
like in Italy, where from two exhibitions a year we now have three and
this year even four!
PRODUCTS ON SHOW
In tune with the few exhibitors
and rare visitors (just three Italians),
there were also very few new releases:
Video Games
I believe I saw the worst cabinet,
for a twin driving game, in my life,
the one in which Sega America
exhibited the new Sega Rally 3 .
Luckily in Europe we will have a
much more attractive cabinet.
Significant interest in another driving
game by Global VR: Need for Speed
in the special “ Carbon ” version.
Nothing special, but the price is
affordable so there could be a good
market in Italy too … if not for the
“approval”. My old friend Frank
Ballouz, sales manager for Global
VR, told me, smiling, about the difficulties met in approving the previous
Nascar , even if all the costs were
paid by an Italian company, and told
me he doubts he will allow himself to
be hoodwinked for another 6, 7
months by an Italian institute that
claims to understand the source program of a ‘driving’ game and will
license the marketing of the game
only after having checked that it can
never be used as a videopoker!
Very useful, on the other hand,
was the decision by Betson to sell
kits of the Fast & Furious Drift to be
installed on old San Francisco Rush,
Cruis’n World and Exotica , at an
acceptable price. Technically the
conversion does not seem very difficult, I will try one and see what happens. The shooting game by Sega,
Rambo, which needs no description,
also stood out.

PUBBLICITA’
Ticket Redemption Games
Apart from the much in demand
redemption Big Bass Wheel (the
stand where it was shown was
always crowded), Skee Ball presented a simple “reflex tester” for 4 players for the centre of arcades that
should be a success: Strike It Rich.
Given the short duration of the
game, the average wins need to be
studied so as to not dissuade the
player after the first luckless
attempts.

Molto utile, invece, l’apertura
della Betson alla vendita di kit della
Fast & Furious Drift da installare su
vecchie San Francisco Rush, Cruis’n
World ed Exotica, ad un prezzo accettabile. Tecnicamente la conversione
non sembra molto difficile, ne proverò qualcuna e vedremo i risultati.
Di grande effetto anche un bello
sparo della Sega: Rambo, che non
necessita di essere descritto.
Ticket Redemption
A parte l’ormai richiestissima
redemption Big Bass Wheel (lo stand
dove era esposta era sempre affollatissimo), Skee Ball ha presentato una
semplicissima “prova riflessi” per 4
giocatori da centro-sala che potrebbe
avere un buon successo: Strike It
Rich. Vista la corta durata del gioco si
tratterà di studiare bene la vincita
media del giocatore per non farlo dissuadere dal giocare dopo i primi tentativi a vuoto.

Certamente gli stand più ricchi
erano quelli che ospitavano queste due
tipologie di giochi. La cosa strana,
almeno per noi italiani, è che questi
due tipi di coin-op sono ancora richiesti dagli operatori americani e quindi,

clienti disposti a pagare 50 centesimi
per fare una partita a touch screen o
sentire una canzone.
Tecnicamente i due prodotti sono
ormai universalmente condensati in un
unico apparecchio che svolge entrambe le funzioni. Anche questa non è
certo una novità, però è stato carino,
almeno per me, ritrovare in un unico
grande stand i miei vecchi amici
dell’AMI (Joel Friedman, tanto per
fare un nome, noto in tutto il mondo
essendo stato per molti anni il volto
rappresentativo della storica casa
costruttrice di juke box) e quelli della
Merit, che ho dovuto abbandonare da
importatore esclusivo quando è stata
richiesta l’omologa di questi giochi.
La cosa ancora più strana è aver
trovato, sempre nello stesso stand,
anche gli altrettanto noti juke box
Rock-Ola, in passato acerrimi antagonisti dell’AMI ed ora costruiti nella
stessa azienda, seppur conservando le
singole peculiarità. Ovviamente ora i
juke box sono interamente computerizzati, mettono a disposizione dei clienti
oltre 5 mila canzoni e se uno vuole
sentire un brano non contenuto nella
lista, è sufficiente che
paghi il doppio, cioè un
dollaro, e via
internet verrà
scaricato
dall’archivio
della casa madre
la canzone prescelta. L’operatore
paga un forfait al
provider, che dipende dal numero di
juke box collegati al
server centrale, che va dal 15 al 20%

Jukeboxes & Touch Screens
Certainly the most complete
stands were those that hosted jukeboxes and touch screens. The
strange thing, at least for us Italians,
is that these two types of coin-op
machines are still in demand among
American operators, which means
that there are customers willing to
pay 50 cents to play a touch screen
game or listen to a song.
Technically, the two products are
now generally combined into one
appliance that carries out both functions. This is certainly nothing new,
however it was nice, at least for me,
to find at one large stand my old
friends from AMI (Joel Friedman,
just to name one, known worldwide
for having been for many years the
face of the historical jukebox manufacturer) and from Merit, who I had
to relinquish as exclusive importer
when the approval of these games
was required.
The even stranger thing was to
have found, at the same stand, the
likewise famous Rock-Ola jukebox,
in the past bitter rivals of AMI and
now part of the same company,
even if maintaining their own unique
character. Obviously, now the jukeboxes are entirely computerised,
allow customers to choose from over
5,000 songs, and if someone wants
to listen to something not in the list,
by simply paying double, that is, one
dollar, the song can be downloaded
via internet. The operator pays a flat
rate to the provider, which depends
on the number of jukeboxes connected to the central server, and
ranges from 15 to 20% of the total
IN; this way there is no need to
worry about royalties and so on.
Of all the products exhibited,
certainly the most innovative was
Encore from JVL, with a 22” LCD
monitor, presented in a
very pleasing stand
and with a
likeable

particular the Italians, being in
love, as well as with her husband,
also with our country. I promised my
friend Vignale that if he managed to
have the game approved by 31
December (2009!), the first 5 will be
for me … otherwise I will still buy
them, but with extreme anger!

Fra tutti i prodotti esposti, certamente il più innovativo è Encore della
JVL con schermo LCD a 22”, presentato in uno stand molto accogliente con
un’affabile padrona di casa che intratteneva con spontanea simpatia gli operatori di tutto il mondo ed in particolare
gli italiani perché innamorata, oltre che
di suo marito, anche del nostro paese.
Ho promesse all’amico Vignale che se
riuscirà ad omologare il gioco entro il
31 dicembre (2009!) i primi 5 esemplari saranno per me … altrimenti li comprerò lo stesso, ma con estrema rabbia!
Conclusioni
Non posso terminare questo lamentevole articolo senza una nota di colore,
anzi, di luce, dato che Las Vegas checché se ne dica, è sempre l’espressione
più tangibile dell’esagerazione, sotto
tutti gli aspetti, del modo americano ed
in particolare per il consumo di energia
elettrica.
Si è letto in questi giorni che anche
la città del vizio per antonomasia è un
po’ in crisi, però vedendo la selva di
gru e nuovi casinò in costruzione, sembra che la notizia lasci il tempo che
trova. Un’altra constatazione è l’aver
visto un numero impressionante di
donne giocare d’azzardo, ma non solo
alle slot, cosa ben conosciuta, ma anche
ai tavoli di Black Jack o TexasHold’Em. Perciò dare una carta di credito in mano ad una donna, entro un
qualsiasi casinò, penso sia
ben più rischioso che darla
a un uomo!
Desidero infine ritornare su un argomento, già da
me ampiamente dibattuto
diverso tempo fa anche su
questa rivista, che riguarda
la modalità di pagamento
delle vincite in TUTTI i
casinò che ho potuto visitare.
Viene oramai adottato
da tutte le case da gioco il
sistema Tito (ticket IN,
ticket OUT), cioè la vincita non avviene più tramite i superatissimi gettoni (sistema Cico: Coin IN,
Coin OUT), ma attraverso la stampa
di appositi ticket con codice a barre e
controllati da un computer centrale per
evitare possibili truffe.
Non voglio certo innescare nuove
polemiche, ma la mancanza del tintinnio provocato dalla caduta dei gettoni,
non ha certo ridotto la voglia di giocare, almeno qui a Las Vegas, perciò la
mia posizione è assolutamente a favore dell’introduzione di questa tecnologia anche in Italia. Ovvio che non può
andare bene per il noleggio delle
NewSlot nei bar, dato l’investimento
per il sistema di controllo, ma sarebbe
certamente un toccasana per la riduzione dei costi di gestione per le innumerevoli sale giochi già presenti nel
nostro paese.
Mi fermo qui con i soliti fin troppo
abusati auspici:
– che le omolghe di 7a/7c siano
trasformate in autocertificazioni del
produttore/importatore, con fideiussione bancaria di garanzia di quanto
dichiarato;
– che le ticket redemption siano
riconosciute come apparecchi elettromeccanici per sale giochi, quindi di
libera installazione;
– che le NewSlot diventino
‘anche’ di intrattenimento, quindi con
percentuale di vincita libera, costo
medio orario prefissato e pagamento
delle tasse sull’utile nel cassetto.
Se però non ci muoveremo un po’
tutti per far sentire le nostre ragioni,
temo che nel cassetto troveremo solo i
nostri sogni!n
Conclusions
I cannot end this whining article
without a note of colour, indeed,
light, given that Las Vegas, they
say, is always the most tangible
expression of the exaggeration,
from all aspects, of the American
way and in particular the consumption of electricity.
In recent days we have read
that even the city of sin par excellence is a bit in crisis, however seeing the jungle of cranes and new
casinos under construction, it
seems that the news may night be
so accurate. Another impression
was the huge number of women
gambling, not only on slot
machines, something that is quite
well known, but also at the Black
Jack or Texas-Hold’Em tables.
Therefore, giving a woman a credit
card, inside any casino, is I think
more risky than giving one to a man!
Finally, I want to return to a subject that I have already widely
debated some time ago in this magazine, concerning the payment of
wins in ALL the casinos I visited.
Practically all the casinos adopt
the TITO system (ticket IN, ticket
OUT), that is, the wins are not paid
in outdated tokens (CICO system:
Coin IN, Coin OUT), but by printing
a special ticket with barcode and
checked by a central computer to
avoid possible frauds.
I don’t want to start a new controversy, but the lack of the ringing
sound caused by the tokens falling
has certainly not reduced the desire
to play, at least here in Las Vegas.
Therefore my position is absolutely
in favour of introducing this technology in Italy too. It is clear that it may
not go well for the hire of NewSlot
machines in bars, given the investment in the control system, but it
would certainly be a good way to
reduce running costs for the many
games arcades already operating in
our country.
I will stop here with my usual
overused wish list:
– that the approvals of 7a/7c
machines are converted into the
self-certification of the manufacturer/importer, with bank guarantee for
the sum declared;
– that the ticket redemption
games are recognised as electromechanical machines for games
arcades, thus free to be installed;
– that the NewSlot machines
‘also’ become amusement games,
thus with a free percentage of wins,
average hourly cost preset and payment of taxes on the profits in the
cash box.
If however we don’t all do something to make our voices heard, I
fear that the cash box will soon only
hold our dreams!q
