Foundation Launches
“Building A Healthier Community” Campaign
F
or more than 85 years Tuality Healthcare
has been “building a healthier community”
for western Washington County. Thanks
to generous support to the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, we are building a future distinguished
by our mission to provide quality, personal and
convenient care for local residents.
The Tuality Healthcare Foundation Board of
Directors has agreed to undertake a $1 million
“Building a Healthier Community” campaign to
help ensure that Tuality Healthcare continues to
provide excellence in patient care and has the very
latest in medical technology and equipment.
Each year, the Foundation will fundraise for
projects that are significant to the growth of the
organization and are needed to keep up with new
equipment and technology.
Donors can give with confidence, knowing
they are contributing to a well-managed, missiondriven organization. Giving enables us to keep
providing the excellent care people expect from
Tuality. With gifts like yours Tuality has more
funds for new technologies, equipment is kept
up to date, quality physicians and nurses are
recruited, our health education classes are low-cost
or free to the community, and we continue to
meet the healthcare needs of our rapidly changing
region.
Here are just a few of the ways your support
of the Campaign will help Tuality and our
dedicated staff provide the best in patient care and
ensure that patients receive the most innovative
and compassionate care. And this is just the
beginning!
Cancer Care — From the latest, most innovative
equipment for removing brain tumors, to
positioning equipment that makes radiation
treatments more comfortable, your support of our
ongoing cancer care efforts will help us save lives.
Pediatric Care — As we reach out to our
youngest patients, we can help by providing such
things as new cribs, an upgraded infant hearing
screener, physical therapy equipment specially
designed for kids, a pediatric code cart, and
much more.
Cardiac Care — Our heart patients will benefit
for years from the enhanced cardiac rehab
equipment you can help us provide, as well as a
new transport ventilator and ongoing health and
wellness education.
Stroke Care — Help us help our stroke patients
during their therapy by providing specialized
physical therapy equipment, such as a gait trainer
and a standing aid, among other things.
For more information about the campaign,

¡Salud! Pinot Noir Auction Breaks Record for
Seasonal-worker Health Ca
T
he Tuality Healthcare Foundation’s ¡Salud!
Oregon’s Pinot Noir Auction held on
Nov. 12 & 13, 2005, generated a record
$708,670 to benefit healthcare outreach services
for the wine industry’s seasonal workers and their
families. This dramatic increase of 47% over the
2004 total of $482,490 places the two-day event
squarely among the Northwest’s most successful
fundraisers.
Now in its 14th year, ¡Salud! is a unique
program to support seasonal vineyard workers
who are so critical to wine production. This
workforce moves from crop to crop, rarely
remaining with one employer long enough to
qualify for health insurance. To assist with the
significant demand for health care, a dedicated
group of vintners and volunteers associated with
the Tuality Healthcare Foundation created the
bilingual, bi-cultural service, calling it ¡Salud!, the
traditional Spanish toast “to your health.”
The ¡Salud! auction focuses on Pinot Noirs
created exclusively for the event by each of 39
premium Oregon wineries. The Big Board auction
at Domaine Drouhin Oregon on Saturday,
Nov. 12, raised $135,625 for four cases of each
2004 wine fetching an average of $870 per case.
The highlight of Sunday’s black-tie dinner at
Portland’s historic Governor Hotel was the special
appeal paddle-raise to benefit ¡Salud!’s dental
program. The appeal alone raised $131,510
and was kicked off with a surprise $30,000 joint
pledge by the participating vintners.
Co-chairs Ken Wright of Ken Wright Cellars,
Danielle Andrus Montalieu of Solena Cellars, and
Adam Campbell of Elk Cove Vineyards credited
the event’s impressive success to several factors,
including an increased demand for premium
Oregon Pinot Noirs and the opportunity to bid on
the heralded 2004 vintage.
Andrus Montalieu added, “Oregon vintners
have always had a reputation for independence
and this outstanding show of support and respect
for the ‘invisible’ workforce without whom our
wines would not be possible, says a great deal for
our winemaking community.”
Wright, one of ¡Salud!’s founding vintners,
also noted that “the number of participating
wineries recognizes not only the growing ranks of
outstanding Pinot Noir producers in Oregon, but
also our shared mission to support the growing
needs of seasonal workers.”
Campbell concluded, “We are seeing an
increased awareness of the cause and everyone
involved is passionate about ¡Salud! Our
winemakers really stepped up with spectacular
wines and generous supporters responded with
terrific energy.”
Through ¡Salud!, seasonal vineyard workers
and their families receive health education,
cholesterol and diabetes screenings, dental care,
assistance with medical paperwork and more.
Referrals are made—either free to the patient or
heavily subsidized—for all types of necessary
medical aid beyond the financial means of
most workers, including quality prenatal care,
hospitalizations and surgeries. In 2005 alone,
¡Salud! staff identified over 2,000 workers and
Oregon-based family members who qualified for
their medical services and assistance.
The 2006 ¡Salud! benefit will be held on
Nov. 11 and 12. For further information on
¡Salud! visit www.saludauction.org or call Maria
McCandless at 503-681-1564.

Leda Garside, ¡Salud! Services Manager,
Honored by Oregon Health Forum
L
eda Garside, RN, ¡Salud! Services clinical
nurse manager, was honored for her
healthcare service and advocacy by the
Oregon Health Forum (OHF) at the group’s annual
leadership dinner event on Jan. 17, 2006, held at
the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. Oregon
Gov. Ted Kulongoski gave the night’s keynote
address.
One of three honorees from throughout the
state, Garside received the OHF “community
service” award for her work with ¡Salud! on behalf
of Latino vineyard workers and other medically
uninsured and underserved populations.
“This is an incredible honor and it validates the
important work that we are doing with ¡Salud! in
health promotion, education and outreach,” said
Garside.
Vincent Reyes, M.D., a Tuality cardiology
specialist, submitted Leda’s nomination for
the award. “Through her hands-on work with
vineyard workers and their families, and her
visionary leadership in advocating for the needs of
migrant workers, Leda has had a major impact on
the healthcare delivery system and has improved
the quality of health care for Oregonians,” wrote
Dr. Reyes.
Leda, who has guided ¡Salud! Services since
1997, works with two staff members and other
community professionals to facilitate healthcare
access, provide on-site health screenings and
education, nutritional counseling, prenatal
counseling, dental care, assistance with insurance
and medical forms, and much more.
¡Salud! was created in 1992 by Tuality
Healthcare physicians and a group of Oregon
winemakers to bring healthcare services to the
seasonal workers who are so critical to the success
Leda Garside, RN, ¡Salud! Services clinical nurse manager, and Dick Stenson, president
& CEO, Tuality Healthcare, pose together after the Oregon Health Forum bestowed their
“community service” award to Garside for healthcare service and advocacy in her work
on behalf of Latino vineyard workers.
of the state’s wine industry.
“¡Salud! is a collaborative effort that allows
us to provide this much-needed, culturally
appropriate care, in a high-quality yet costeffective way,” said Garside. “Even in light of all
the challenges we encounter in healthcare today,
we continue to make progress in reducing the
challenges faced by those who are uninsured and
underserved.”
Other evening honorees included J. Bart
McMullan, M.D., president of Regence BlueCross
BlueShield of Oregon, who received OHF’s
“leadership” award; and Rick Wopat, M.D.,
vice president of Samaritan Health Services,
who received the “visionary services” award
for his efforts on behalf of the uninsured.
OHF works to inform and educate
stakeholders statewide on issues of
healthcare financing, delivery and policy.
Each year, it honors healthcare leaders
who have made a significant difference in
improving access to care for Oregonians.
Cancer Fundraising Event Draws More than
725 Walkers and Runners
E
arly morning, July 4, as people awoke to
celebrate the country’s birthday, more than
725 men, women and children converged
on the streets of Hillsboro to help others live to
see more birthdays.
They participated in the sixth annual C.A.T.
(Cancer Awareness and Treatment) Walk & Fun
Run, held July 4 in downtown Hillsboro.
Organized by the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, this year’s event included the
traditional 5k walk, plus a new 5k “fun run” in
which 75 runners helped to pick up the pace.
“This year’s C.A.T. Walk & Fun Run was
very successful on several levels,” said Catherine
Crooker, director, Tuality Healthcare Foundation
& External Affairs. “Our preliminary count shows
that the event raised in excess of $70,000 to help
support local cancer services. Plus, participants
paid inspirational tribute to our friends and
neighbors who have survived the disease, and to
loved ones who have been lost.”
Including this year’s preliminary
total, more than $300,000 has been
raised thus far from C.A.T. Walk
events since the first one was held
in 2001.
The funds support the Tuality
Healthcare Cancer Initiative, which
brings the latest cancer treatment,
care, education and outreach to our
community. This includes services
offered through the Tuality/OHSU
Cancer Center and the Tuality
Breast Health Center.
To help continue the fundraising
efforts of the C.A.T. walkers and
runners, please consider making a
donation to the Tuality Healthcare
Cancer Initiative. Just call
503-681-1170 or go to
www.tualityfoundation.org.
Runners set off on a 5k course through the streets of downtown
Hillsboro, helping to raise funds for cancer programs as part of the
2006 C.A.T. Walk & Fun Run event on July 4.

Gifts to the Tuality Healthcare Foundation
Help Meet Healthcare Needs of our Patients
and Community
Denzil Scheller
Appointed Chair of
Foundation’s Board of
Directors
T
he Tuality Healthcare Foundation is pleased
to announce the appointment of Denzil
Scheller as chair of the organization’s board
of directors.
A member of
the board since 1997
and recent chair of the
Foundation’s Fund
Development Committee,
Scheller will oversee the
Foundation’s efforts to raise
and invest funds to support
Tuality Healthcare in its mission and will help lead
the “Building a Healthier Community” Campaign.
Scheller is replacing Ralph Brown, who recently
completed his three-year term as board chair.
“We are delighted to have Denzil fill this
role,” said Catherine Crooker, director, Tuality
Healthcare Foundation. “His service will greatly
benefit the Foundation and will help us continue
the tradition of excellence established by Ralph
Brown and other past chairs.”
he Tuality Healthcare Foundation is
extremely grateful for the generosity of
each and every one of our contributors.
More than 1,000 donors in 2005 supported the
Foundation with gifts of all levels. Your support
enables Tuality Healthcare to continue delivering
cutting-edge and compassionate care to our patients
and to provide outreach to this community.
Each year the Tuality Healthcare Foundation
Board of Directors allocates funds to projects
and programs that assist Tuality Healthcare in
its mission of “building a healthier community.”
Listed below are a few of the ways your gifts to the
Foundation have made a difference this past year
in the lives of our patients and local community.
Providing access to care
A new van to the Tuality Local Coach (TLC) helps
transport community members to and from all
Tuality facilities and Tuality-affiliated physicians.
Whether patients need transportation for annual
exams or daily trips to the Tuality/OHSU Cancer
Center for radiation treatments, TLC is a key part
of Tuality’s efforts to reach out to the community.
TLC’s trained volunteer drivers and escorts ensure
that people of all ages with medical needs get there
safely, reliably and on time.
Helping our elderly patients
A new bathing system is designed specifically to
reduce injuries and keep our most vulnerable
patients safe.
Educating diabetes patients
Food models and other educational materials help
Tuality’s registered dietitians teach patients dealing
with diabetes about healthy meal selections and
food portions.
Keeping babies safe
Infant car seats help parents, who cannot afford a
car seat for their newborn, take their baby safely
home from the hospital.
Continuing to deliver cutting edge
care to our patients
Patients continue to receive the most innovative
and compassionate care through state-of-the art,
up-to-date equipment and care. Contributions to
the Foundation funded new equipment for cancer
patients, cardiac rehabilitation services, physical
therapy, the Center for Geriatric Psychiatry, and
maternity and pediatric services. From newborns
to older adults, gifts to the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation help provide all patients the best
possible care.

Societies
The members of the Tuality Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors
wish to express their sincere appreciation to the 2006 society members
of the Tuality Healthcare Foundation. These donors, whose names
appear below, have made extraordinary contributions that help provide
high quality healthcare, education, and outreach.
Minnie Jones Coy Society
Minnie Jones Coy was a true pioneer. In an age still dominated by men
and with only a fifth-grade education, Minnie accepted the challenge
of establishing a much-needed hospital in western Washington County.
She had the courage and the will to open a medical facility, to attract
medical doctors, and to become involved with virtually every aspect
of running her hospital, all without the benefit of any medical, legal,
financial or business training. Largely due to Minnie’s determination
and spirit, what began in a modest two-story home grew to become
Tuality Healthcare.
As members of the Minnie Jones Coy Society, we honor you, like
Minnie, for your leadership, compassion and commitment to Tuality.
Thank you for following in Minnie’s footsteps and helping us to meet
today’s challenges in providing high-quality care to the community.
The Tuality Healthcare Foundation is sincerely grateful for the continued
commitment and support of our donors. Listed below are our 2005

Dr. A.O. Pitman Club
After Minnie’s death, Dr. Pitman led the
physician group through the challenging
process of establishing Tuality as a non-profit,
community hospital. Dr. Pitman and his
colleagues had the wisdom to recognize the
importance of Tuality to the community, and
they took vital steps to assure its survival as an
independent, locally controlled hospital.
Family
Y
ou don’t have to be a Vanderbilt,
a Carnegie or a Bill Gates to have
a continuing influence on the
community you care about. By
leaving any size gift to Tuality
in your will, you can make
a lasting difference.
As one of
Tuality’s founding
physicians, Dr. A.O.
Pitman worked
hand-in-hand with
Minnie to care for
our community.
The Dr. A.O. Pitman
Club honors those
who have made
a commitment to
Tuality Healthcare
through gifts of
$500-$999 in any
one year.

News for the friends of the Tuality Healthcare Foundation
Tribute Gifts
2005
Honor and memorial gifts are contributions that honor
a friend or family member on a special occasion or pay
tribute to the memory of a loved one. Many patients and
families feel a special gratitude for the care they received
at Tuality Healthcare; a gift in honor is a meaningful way
to thank caregivers and show regard for the work they do.

Employees ‘Make a Difference’
with Inspiring Campaign Results
T
he results are in and it’s clear that Tuality
Healthcare’s 2005-06 “From the Inside Out”
fundraising campaign held Dec. 7 through
16, 2005, was a smashing success. Tuality’s
generous employees, physicians and volunteers
contributed nearly $167,000 for important local
community causes.
Organizers reported “outstanding” donor
involvement in the campaign, with an impressive
pace set by the 100-percent participation of
Tuality’s administrative team and department
directors.
“Yet again, our employees have shown one of
the reasons why this is such a wonderful place
to work,” said Dick Stenson, president & CEO,
Tuality Healthcare. “I think it speaks volumes
about our ‘Tuality community’ and the caliber of
people with whom we are very fortunate to work
every day.”
In addition to pledge-card contributions,
participants added a “pretty penny” to the total
through special events such as a silent auction,
theme basket raffle, and candy cane sales.
The bi-annual fundraising campaign, in its
fourth cycle, provides the ‘Tuality community’ an
opportunity to support the important needs of
patients, co-workers, and the community at larg
Campaign funds support the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, the Tuality Employees Helping
Employees fund, United Way of the ColumbiaWillamette, and Earth Share of Oregon. During
the past five years, Tuality employees and
volunteers have given more that $550,000
through this bi-annual campaign.
“Support from our employees has helped to
build a Cancer Center and Breast Health Center
at Tuality, plus preserve clean air and clean water
feed the hungry and house the homeless, give
a helping hand to members of our own Tuality
family in times of crisis, and so much more,”
said Stenson.
Employees, physicians, volunteers and their
families were invited to a special appreciation
party, featuring entertainment by Dick Stenson’s
own jazz trio, at the Cultural Arts Center in
February to celebrate the success of the past
campaigns.
