Particularly when the likes of Reichel-Pugh, Willy Persico and Mario Pedol are contributing to the genetic mix. And if the yacht in question is designed as the big sister to the Southern Wind 78, a series that is as victorious as it is popular on the Mini Maxi racing scene. The aforementioned big sister is the SW 94 Kiboko, a fitting addition to a yard celebrating its 20th anniversary. “This is a yacht aimed at owners of our Reichel-Pugh-designed SW 78s. We had a gap in the range between the 80s and the 100s, plus we also wanted to launch a more aggressive, performance-oriented yacht. Some of our owners then began showing interest in a larger boat because, after a couple of years, you tend to trade up. Along the way, we ended up with this 94’ which really has everything that you’d want b uon sangue non mente. «C'è un bel gioco di dosaggio fra bianco from an even bigger cruiser. Comfort included.” Hence, too, the new star’s 51.5-ton displacement. “We could have lightened her by another couple of tons but we opted for a solution that would allow us to retain our signature comfort,” explains Willy Persico. To get down to the nitty-gritty about Kiboko, she’s a cruiser/racer with three cabins in the owner/guest section (forward), an all-in crew quarters (2 cabins, 2 heads, galley and dinette) aft (another SW signature), plus an enormous saloon that’s unique in its linear simplicity. “The real social heart of the yacht,” as Mario Pedol of Nauta Design, which created the general concept, interior design and exterior styling, puts it. “There’s a nice mix of white and natural teak with bare carbon here and there, but we didn’t go overboard. Despite being exceptionally sporty by vocation, the SW94 has a very clean, flush deck very much in line with the classic Nauta Design concept that has become so closely associated with Southern Wind. The central cockpit has an adjacent sun pad area while the working cockpit is aft. Clearly, in this instance, because Kiboko is obviously an aggressive cruiser weight reduction was an essential part of the concept. “We wanted a blue water yacht with a sensitive, easy to handle helm,” explains Persico. “The hull is 89 Yacht Capital Yacht Capital Kiboko La nuova stella del Capo The Cape's new star DIMENSIONI DIMENSIONS Lunghezza f.t. The Kiboko has a very rational flush deck. For the next year two new designs for the yard: the SW 102 Deck Saloon and the SW 82 Fast Cruiser infusion-moulded carbon with Kevlar reinforcements confined to the critical areas forward of the keel.” The three-part mould itself was also unusual and designed for more accurate laying of the fibres and Corecell as well as a lighter result. Despite the fact that Kiboko means "hippopotamus" in Swahili, this is very much an adrenaline-fuelled yacht. Her powerful sail plan is spread on a Southern Spars High Modulus Carbon mast and the rigging is made from EC6+ carbon. Both her draught (4.5 m) and appendages (Reichel/Pugh) have been optimised for efficiency and VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) results confirm that, in a real breeze of 6 knots with an apparent 20° angle, she will probably make 8.3 knots. Up that to 14 knots of breeze at 140° and she zips along at more than 14 knots. Born to run indeed! 91
