Dopo aver definito i concetti principali e i metodi di misura dello sviluppo economico, si prosegue con un'analisi più dettagliata della disuguaglianza, della povertà e della crescita della popolazione evidenziando i legami con lo sviluppo e la possibilità che si creino percorsi di crescita diseguale. A questo scopo, per meglio comprendere le trasformazioni strutturali che accompagnano il processo di sviluppo, si studieranno le interazioni economiche e le migrazioni fra le zone rurali e quelle urbane. Inoltre si analizzeranno i mercati e le istituzioni che sono in grado di influenzare il tenore di vita nei paesi in via di sviluppo, concentrandosi in particolare sui fallimenti di mercato e sulle loro conseguenze. Prima di concludere, si ritornerà all'analisi aggregata, approfondendo il ruolo delle condizioni iniziali in grado di favorire lo sviluppo economico e concentrando l'attenzione sull'importanza relativa del percorso compiuto rispetto al ruolo delle aspettative future, attraverso l'analisi delle complementaretà e dei rendimenti crescenti. Infine, si studieranno in modo approfondito le questioni proncipali della teoria e delle politiche riguardanti gli scambi internazionali. Obiettivi formativi Il corso mira a fornire una solida formazione in economia dello sviluppo e a fornire gli strumenti analitici necessari a comprendere i fatti e le cause della globalizzazione al fine di studiarne gli effetti sui paesi. Metodi didattici Lezioni frontali Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento L'esame finale è scritto, con due domande di importanza simile ed un'ora di tempo. Una domanda tratterà di argomenti teorici o empirici in termini generali, mentre l'altra domanda riguarderà uno studio di caso approfondito, indicato nel programma come box. Le risposte dovranno essere rigorose, pertinenti e complete, poiché l'obiettivo è quello di mostrare di avere ottenuto una buona comprensione della materia. It begins by defining the concepts and measurement of development, then proceeds with a more detailed exploration of inequality, poverty, and population growth, pointing out their interconnections with economic development, and the possibility of uneven growth paths. To this end, in order to understand the structural transformation that accompanies the development process, rural-urban interaction and migration are explicitly introduced. It also looks at the markets and institutions that influence the lives of people in developing countries, stressing the role of markets failures and their interrelations. Before concluding, it goes back to aggregate analysis, dealing with the role of initial conditions for development. The course focuses on history versus expectations, analyzing the role of complementarities and increasing returns. Finally, it provides a detailed analysis of the key issues concerning international trade and trade policy. Obiettivi formativi The goal of this course is aimed at obtaining a solid background in Development Economics and also at obtaining the anlaytical tools to understand the facts and the determinants of globalization and further investigate its impact among countries. Metodi didattici Lectures. Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento The final exam is written. There are two questions, with similar weight, with a time limit of one hour. One question deals with theoretical or empirical topics in broad terms, the other concerns an in-depth study labelled in the syllabus as box. Answers must be rigorous, pertinent and complete, because the aim is to show that a good understanding has been achieved.
