The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect
Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation
Blue Moon. He worked together with four architects: Space
Group, Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office Architects and Tony
Fretton. Each of them drew up two designs; one for the
Europapark (a former industrial site) and one for the inner city of
Groningen, all based on Ito's master plan. In the context of this
manifestation the English Foreign Office Architects made a 4
story high building with a façade that could be opened and closed
like sleeping bag, with a zipper. It is a steal-framed structure
with a skin of perforated steel plates. These can be opened. The
building changes from a fully closed massive column into a light
and open structure. Inside is a restaurant and two apartments.

The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect
Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation
Blue Moon. He worked together with 4 architects: Space Group,
Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office Architects and Tony Fretton.
Each of them drew up two designs; one for the Europapark (a
former industrial site) and one for the inner city of Groningen, all
based on Ito's master plan. In the context of this manifestation
the Uurwerkersgang-project was a collaboration between Toyo Ito
and Hiromi Hosoya / Hosoya Schaefer Architects, Zürich. It was
built as a guesthouse for the University of Groningen. The ground
floor remains free for semi-public functions such as a gallery. The
site is located at a narrow alley next to an existing brick building
formerly used as a library. The new building facade is made from
aluminum bricks. It is blending in with the brick façades along the
alley and at the same time defines a new, light and transparent
counterpoint on the old street.

FityTwoDegrees Business Innovation Center is an open and
inviting multi-functional complex, a meeting and inspiring place
for NXP (founded by Philips), partners and third parties. The
name has arisen from the geographical position: Nijmegen lies at
latitude 52º north. The green surroundings (grassed over roof)
form the support for a bent office tower, a congress centre and a
hotel and apartments. Beneath the grass roof are the car park,
dispatch centre and a covered Plaza (restaurants, shops and
fitness facilities, mostly open to the public). The office spaces
and laboratories in the 17storey tower can be flexibly arranged,
with a maximum use of each floor due to the location of the two
compact cores. The structural mass of the tower is formed by
black anodised cladding in which staggered openings play a
graphic game with pixels on the facade. At 86 metres the tower
is the highest building in Nijmegen and with its bent form makes
a gesture of invitation to its visitors and to the city.

.
The new Agora Theatre is part of the Master plan for the city
center of Lelystad and will play an important role both day- and
nightime in this area with clustering of cultural and social
activities. This iconic building has a sculptural effect during the
day, and after sunset a glowing impact. Arup Lighting has been
asked to design the interior and exterior lighting for the new
theatre. Transition, movement and metamorphosis play an
important role. The colours used in the building originate from
photographs of the sky above Lelystad. The exterior colour was
distilled from photographs taken during sunset, whilst the blue
found in the interior originates from a cloudless sky. Light falling
on the various surfaces conveys the impression of constantly
changing colours and forms. The grand café, also open during the
day, connects to the evening square. The vertical foyer, which
swings through the entire building, connects different theatre and
congress halls on the different floors.

The new school offers a range of technical and theoretical
courses, including health and welfare education. The integration
of public sports facilities increase the social character of the
school and makes it an educational building with an unusual
public character. The building is located as a landmark in an open
green area. The architect wanted to "preserve the existing open
surroundings as much as possible. This resulted in a compact
pyramid shaped building with walls leaning inside 17 degrees,
which respects the surrounding landscape. In addition, the
compact building mass also optimizes the internal planning and
orientation and enhances the social aspect of this type of
education." The large central patio, placed above the entrance
level on the third floor (!), hangs from the roof, and allows
daylight to enter.

Paviljoen de Posbank
Address
Beekhuizenseweg 1

.
The teahouse Pavilion attempts to meld into the landscape
through the architectural and structural treatment of floors and
walls. Floors appear to float in flowing, contiguous spaces. Walls
disappear as the structure, tree trunks, resemble the
surroundings. A glass skin lends an ambiguity between inside and
outside. Here architecture and structure have a symbiotic
relationship, to achieve a balance between the Pavilion and its
surroundings. From the entrance the floor rises in a continuous
spiral that wraps itself around a group of trees ending in a 14m
cantilever. The necessary construction is made from steel, for
tension, and unprocessed solid oak, for compression. A wood
floor, made with cuts of tree trunk and embedded in epoxy,
marks the dining area. The Pavilion provides visitors to the nature
park a place to rest and eat or drink, offering splendid views of
the IJssel and Rijn valleys.

.
This is one of MVRDV’s first realized designs: three plastic
entrance buildings to the National Park De Hoge Veluwe. All are
designed to their surroundings and differ in shape and material.
The buildings are completely made out of one material
-successively brick, corten-steel and wood. Originally one lodge
was designed in glass, but later changed into corten steel. They
are positioned near the three entrances of the park, in Otterloo,
Hoenderloo and Schaarsbergen. For the exact three locations see

Address
Lunettenlaan 600
5263 NT Vught
Netherlands
http://www.nmkampvught.nl
.
Not much is left of the Vught World War II concentration camp
but a small piece of ground with the remains of the crematorium.
These remnants stand more or less in the shadow of the maximum
security prison built in the grounds of the former camp. Claus en
Kaan were asked to design an entrance pavilion. The building,
which contains exhibition space and offices for the foundation
marks the entrance to the camp in the form of a screen. The
façade is made out of bands of thin terracotta material, which
alternate with heavy bricks, set back so that the space between
the terracotta tiles can be filled to look like a thick joint. There
are two routes through the building, one that visitors follow upon
entering and the other as they leave the site. The exhibition
rooms are set next to each other, without any connecting
corridor.

.
The Effenaar is one of several professional Pop Music venues in
the Netherlands that have renewed their buildings, or in this case
built a new house for their programme. MVRDV got the
assignment to make a bold, open-minded and alternative
building. The interior design-duo Anthony Kleinepier and Bob
Copray made the whole interior. They had to take care of several
‘hufterproof’ (vandalism-proof) elements, like entrance desk,
toilets, wardrobe and bars. Inside the rather heavily-built
building and course finishing they placed these interior elements
like individual objects or furniture. Many are coated with an
epoxy top layer, and give them a touch-ability. The
multidisciplinary Dutch design office Fabrique has made the new
visual identity, a dynamic new house-style for publications like
posters, flyers and the website. Also the signposts in interior and
exterior are designed by Fabrique.

In a postwar neighbourhood the urban plan called for two blocks
of row-houses: 78 row houses of various types. MADE mixed the
programme in such a way that a maximum of contrast between
the different types was created, making the standard row houses
look like individual houses. At the same time the houses are
brought together by the materialisation. The black brick,
consistent with the overall urban plan and the concrete band.
The concrete band runs along the houses dividing and uniting the
houses. All houses are based on the same width, allowing an
efficient building process and and at the same time flexibility for
the future owners in planning their ideal house.

Seventeen terraced houses are part of a redevelopment scheme
for the site of a former textile factory. The typology of the
houses is based on a drive-in / split-level organisation. The
individual garages are half sunken underground, giving the living
room and the dining room a stepped section. Although the shape
of the complex forms a strong urban ensemble, the individual
houses are still expressed as a rhythm of roof sheds, which
together with the metal cladding refers at the industrial past of
the area.

René van Zuuk, a Dutch architect famous for his
sculpture-architecture, designed a rectangular office building
that is wedged between 2 other buildings. The façade is
composed of concrete elements which together form a
continuous, wrap-around branch pattern. The skin extricates the
building from its wedged position and forms a decorative filter
between the internal world of the office and the outdoor world
of the adjacent park. At the same time, the façade is a pragmatic
solution to the narrow 'window-cleaning balconies' stipulated in
the programme. The urban design ruled out projecting balconies
so Van Zuuk incorporated them into the façade surface by placing
them between the concrete branches and the floor-to-ceiling
windows, thereby satisfying both streetscape and functional
requirements. Pragmatic considerations like isolation and
floor/façade surface ratios also play an important role in Zuuk's
buildings. This is why he calls his buildings 'mathematical
sculptures'.

Open Air Museum
Address
Schelmseweg 89
6800 AP Arnhem
Netherlands
http://www.openluchtmuseum.nl/
.
The Netherlands Open Air Museum is picturesquely situated in the
rolling forested landscape near Arnhem. Besides experiencing the
historic buildings, rural culture and traditional Dutch crafts,
visitors can enjoy temporary exhibitions in the new building and
watch shows at the HollandRama, a panorama theatre. The
building is designed as the central square of the museum, linking
inside and outside. The choice of materials reflects the theme of
the Dutch landscapes. A path of old clinkers leads past a
mysterious 13-metre-high boulder-like structure without any
apparent openings. The museum entrance gate is set in a
143-metre-long wall that cuts through the landscape, its surface
constructed from stones and old bricks laid in different masonry
bonds. Inside, visitors enter a spacious, light entrance foyer that
houses the café and museum shop, with stepped split-levels that
adapt to the rolling landscape.

House Kersten
Address
Balatonmeer 27
3446 JR Woerden
Netherlands
.
House Kersten veils its functions. Normal elements that
characterize a house like a porch, front door, living room window
etc, are hidden deliberately. The detailing supports the
concealing. The city plan for the neighbourhood Waterrijk, by
West 8, stipulates that cars need to be parked within the volume
of the site. The client is disabled, therefore an elevator in the
house was necessary. The house had to be built with a low
budget. So, at an early stage the choice was made for a compact
volume, a light façade and an efficient position of the stairs in
order to make, simple construction possible. The steel plates of
the fence have laser cut holes. This relatively rich ornament is
inspired by 19th century cast iron fences. In the steel fence a
door and electric garage door is hidden. The façade is made of
black plasterwork, finished with a shiny silicon coating. On the
1st floor, there's a study; on the 2nd floor the living room and on
the 3th floor the sleeping rooms.

The Imagination
Address
De Verbeelding 25
3892 HZ Zeewolde
Netherlands
.
The 'art-track Zeewolde' is a 7 km route passing through an
open-air exhibition of high-quality sculptural art. This sculpture
park flows out into a pond and in this pond the art pavilion The
Imagination is located. With this position in the water, at the end
of the art-track, the building becomes the organisational nerve
centre for events, exhibitions and lectures. The sculpture Sea
Level by Richard Serra has particularly contributed to the
art-track's reputation. The elongated shape of the pavilion stems
from Serra's long black concrete wall. The limited budget was the
occasion for applying a three-hinged frame to construct the span.
These originally cheap structures are often used in barns an
therefore well-known in the surrounding agricultural
polder-landscape. All the trusses are identical but they are all at
a slightly different angle compared to the ground surface. The
result is an elegantly twisted roofscape. (Maarten Willems for

City hall Alphen aan den Rijn
Address
Stadhuisplein 1
2405 SH Alphen aan den Rijn
Netherlands
http://www.alphenaandenrijn.nl/
.
The City Hall of Alphen is the first project in the redevelopment
of this Dutch city, and sets the tone for future developments. The
building's glass façade responds directly to the council's goal to
create an open and inviting facility. All the public facilities are
located on the ground floor with the upper floor council hall
projecting over the entrance, thus expressing its accessibility to
the public. The exterior is treated as a layered skin that encloses
the three parts of the building - city hall, service department and
offices. The main volume of the city hall has a transparent glass
skin enclosing an atrium behind. The lower volumes, which are
primarily clad in stone, house the service department and
offices. The building's complex form resolves the scale
differences in the surrounding urban fabric. In these ways, the
design responds sensitively to the nuances of the location as well
as to the programmatic and spatial requirements.

This is a nursing home for elderly and is part of a larger
care-complex containing a private care home, a sheltered housing
complex, an adjoining church and a daycare centre for kids. The
main objective of the care facility is to support the residents in
their independence as long as possible and to provide care
appropriate to individual needs. Cooperation between 3 separate
health care institutions while planning the new development
made it possible to create surroundings for a differentiated
service showing respect and attention to the users as individuals.
Exchange and shared use of infrastructure, facilities and staff
directly benefits users. The buildings surround 2 inner courtyards
and contain a row of separate housing units and a plaza. This
symbolizes a different kind of home for the elderly, in which
older people are not only housed and provided for until the end
of their natural lives, but can experience the evening of their
lives as the morning of a new life of the spirit.

Situated on the southern entrance road to from the A35 towards
the centre of Enschede, this new office building is designed as a
new landmark and orientation point. The local housing
corporation De Woonplaats (translated into 'The Domicile, or
'Habitat') moves all of it’s offices to this new location. Together
with working place, the building houses a meeting space for its
tenants on the ground floor, a shop and central information
centre. The building is orientated to the four crossing streets,
that surround the office. As the storeys rise, the floors and the
façade turn and from the interior the view is shifted. Thus, the
overall shape and external image of the building changes towards
the position of the spectator. All glass façades are clad with an
intelligent sunscreen. Horizontal panels are fixed to a steel
frame, and entirely calculated to the position of the sun, at this
precise location on the planet.

This new school is located in the Paleiskwartier, a recently
upgraded area behind the Central Train Station, which is filled
with multi-storey car parks, offices and large scale housing. The
school is a nice fresh counterpart to all these new projects, with
a gleaming gold façade, cantilevered above the ground floor,
sheltering the entrance. The school is based upon a new
educational concept, where a mix between traditional classrooms
and open spaces for individual education has been designed.
There are 2 entrances on the ground floor, pupil functions and an
auditorium. Classrooms are located above and below the
mediatheque on the first and third floors. The mediatheque, on
the second floor is a large open/plan floor in the middle of the
school. The third floor contains the schools sports hall as well as
the biology and chemistry labs. The fourth floor houses staff

The Brink Centre
Address
Brink
7551 Hengelo
Netherlands
.
The Brink Centre in Hengelo co-opts the inertia of 15,000 square
metres of shopping to instigate major surgery on the city plan.
Hengelo is a small Dutch town near the German border, shaped
by an industrial past and post-war reconstruction. The slacked
town centre tried to focus on the market place, but by the 1990s
this space had been given over mostly to be used as a car park.
One starting point was a huge underground car park required
beneath most of the site, which provides for customers to the new
shops and replaces lost parking in the reclaimed market place. To
give some sense of vertical focus to the double square and make
The Brink visible from afar, Bolles + Wilson have added a 44
metres high tower. Made up of white pre-cast concrete panels, it
has a LED clock at the top and a video pavilion projecting
electronic billboards at the bottom. These can be used as an
information and display point. The project provides a landmark
for this central area of town.

traditional distinction between white- and blue-collar workers,
the building is organised around a collective courtyard garden

one other. The facade is a continuous elevation that wraps
around the building to form a striking volume that is recognisable
from the motorway. This façade is made of serigraphed glass and

Indes is an industrial design firm for highly technical appliances.
They wanted a building that would suit that status: smart,
user-friendly and a strong identity. The open workspace is the
central focus of this office building. All design studios are in
direct contact with a central void situated in the high part on the
railway side. Service space such as toilets and storage are
situated in the middle zone being the spine of the low part.
Mobile furniture regulates the flexible use of the building. The
efficient scheme does not result in a static plan. It communicates
with the environment by showing its users through lighting
effects and projections. At the same time it shows what happens
in the area. Although the form of the building contributes to the
differentiation it mainly signifies an energetic purpose. The high
space causes a natural draft in order to carry away the ventilated
air. An additional heat pump that extracts energy from the soil
both heats and cools the building.

Spikvoorde II
Address
M.C. Escherweg 19
7425 RH Deventer
Netherlands
.
Spikvoorde is part of De Vijfhoek (The Pentagon), an urban
development district in Deventer. Within a short period of time 2
commission opportunities in this area were presented. Although
they differ in their program and principal, the two projects are
indeed related in their syntax and structure. The location of the
second project is similar to the first Spikvoorde-assignment: an
all-round open and urban context. Together they form a kind of
'family'. With that argument, to relate the two buildings
architecturally, the architect convinced the second principal and
subsequently secured the design commission for the seven
low-rise houses. The design is bases on the same structure;
starting with one basic shape which is repeated several times by
means of a combined rotation and translation. By repeating this
algorithm six times a more concentric volume around an enclosed
courtyard arises. The result is a housing block without a front ans
rear, but with an inside and an outside.

Barneveld Transferium
Address
Baron van Nagellstraat

Reorganization of the Barneveld - Noord railway station area
began with construction of a ‘transferium’, an interchange for
private and public transport. It consists of a parking garage and a
pedestrian walkway across the Amersfoort - Apeldoorn railway
line (known as the Valley Line). The pedestrian overpass ends at
‘platform plaza’. The car park and the pedestrian walkway are
merged into a single volume presenting a united architectural
image. The volume floats free of the ground, turns to the highest
point and passes over the rails with an elegant deflection. The
spatial relation between the walkway and the car park is
accentuated by partly continuing the double-floor height of the
walkway into the garage. The lift and the staircase are
consequently like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the
minimal dimensions of conventional parking garages. The
walkway is a steel truss bridge with a free span of 35 metres

By order of Domijn Woningcorporatie, Claus en Kaan Architecten
has made a design for a health centre in the area of Roombeek in
the city of Enschede in the Netherlands. The building, which
apart from a health centre also comprises parking space,
apartments, single family homes and a home for the disabled,
occupies a remarkable position within the master plan of
ArchitectenCie. A building of 10 floors arises on the crossing of
Roomweg and De Bleken. The pharmacy as the most public
function is prominently present. By gradually decreasing the
volume of the building with spacious terrace apartments and
splitting up the program in various building parts around an inner
garden, the building concurrently makes a connection with the
adjacent small scale buildings (text from architect's website).

Roombeek Urban Plan
Address
Roomweg 1
7510 Enschede
Netherlands
http://www.roombeek.nl
.
On 13 May 2000, a fireworks factory in Enschede's Roombeek
neighbourhood exploded. Besides costing many lives, the
explosion swept away 43 hectares of the city. The reconstruction
plan was devised in close consultation with affected residents
who wished to return to the neighbourhood. The history and
identity of the area were given a great deal of consideration.
Important pillars of the plan include a number of former textile
businesses, the original street layout, the route of an old railway
line and the idea of reintroducing the 'Roombeek' waterway.
Another striking feature is the richly variegated programme of
living, shopping, recreation, culture, education and business
activity. The realised plan contains projects by known architects
such as Benthem Crouwel, Erick van Egeraat, SeARCH, 2012
architects and Claus en Kaan. A large part of the plan is realised
by private contractors and contains both free standing villa's and
diverse row houses (text from architect's website).

Roosendaal Pavilion
Address
Nieuwe Markt 23
4701 Roosendaal
Netherlands
http://www.paviljoenroosendaal.nl/
.
The idea behind the urban proposal was that the pavilion would
divide the square in two parts in such a way that you would still
have the feeling of being on one big square. Because of the
market activities which occupy the entire square twice a week,
the terraces of the pavilion needed to be placed above the
ground floor. Originally the terraces could only be reached by
going through the pavilion. René van Zuuk decided to make the
terraces accessible from the outside of the building as well so you
can walk from the square up onto the sloped roof to the terraces,
letting the roof become a public area. The entrances from the
roof to the building are made by cuts in the sloped surface, giving
every floor its own terrace. The rest of the roof acts as a big
stage which allows artists to give performances in front of the
building. On the south side the pavilion reaches its highest point.
This part of the building cantilevers over the main entrance of
the parking garage.
