CASA DEI NONNI
Qui in via Levada a Gorizia, qui e` nata mia madre, in quella casa che in realta` era
molto piu simile a questa.
Poi nel `47 sono scappati perche mio nonno dopo il 23 esimo gatto morto che gli
buttavano oltre il cancello ha detto no; aveva paura, aveva troppi figli, quattro.
Poi durante la notte, ha preso qualche tela,
mio nonno come hobby faceva il pittore. Ha preso qualche tela, arrotolata, pochi soldi e
se ne e` andato in Jugoslavia.

NOVA GORICA - SLOVENIJA
CASA ATTUALE
Qui in questa casa da via Levada, si sono ritirati i miei, ovvero mio nonno e mia nonna.
Mio nonno morto di cancro abbastanza giovane, e mi rimane qualche suo quadro e delle
cose che gettano una luce un po` strana sul suo passato. Purtroppo la mia famiglia non
ha memoria storica, una bomba distrusse casa e famiglia di mia nonna quando lei aveva
dieci anni, e da quella parte li` non ho informazioni.
Invece, per quanto riguarda mio nonno, c`e` una polemica in atto.
Io ho recuperato qualche quadro di mio nonno e un giorno vedendo delle infiltrazioni di
muffa ho deciso di togliere il quadro e sotto come spessore ho trovato questo, che per
un attimo - calcolando che mio nonno da sloveno ha dovuto ritirarsi da Gorizia - questo
mi sembrava un po` strano.
Chiesi delle informazioni al cugino di mia madre che abita ancora a Gorizia che disse :
Quello li` e` mio, tuo nonno ha insistito per prenderlo perche` era camicia nera.
Non e` possibile, ho cercato altre informazioni e di recente ho trovato questo che per
me e` molto importante: e` l`unione antifascista italo-slava.
Questa zona di confine e` un po` come un riccio che si appallottola e casca giu` per un
declivio e gli si incastra un po` tutto: vita, morte, cultura, amori, e` un po` particolare,
come del resto le due Gorizie.
Poi c`e` la questione del bilinguismo che e` molto divertente.
Ho cominciato a leggere in italiano molto presto, soprattutto perche` i libri costavano
meno.

POSTO DI LAVORO
Ho sempre lavorato a Gorizia, adesso che ci penso, perche` finita la scuola dell`obbligo,
sono andato subito all`Istituto d`arte di Gorizia e poi, comiciando a bazzicare in giro mi
sono sempre trovato abbastanza bene.

NOVA GORICA - SLOVENIA
SCANTINATO E STUDIO
Questa e` la mia cantina, il mio nido dove in teoria dovrei fare quello per cui sono nato,
ovvero sia dipingere, ho giusto finito oggi una copertina per Isonzo – Soča, una delle
tante.
Questa e` una rivista transfrontaliera bilingue, una rivista che si occupa di storia e
politica del territorio. Questo mi permette di darmi una rinfrescata al cervello e poi una
realta`, una delle poche che a Gorizia e` riuscita a farsi strada e non invecchiare in
modo patetico.
Io mi firmo Pan nei miei lavori, perche` il cognome e` Spazzapan, in sloveno e` stato
trasformato in Spacapan e gli italiani lo pronunciano Spakapan, cosa che a me non fa
molto piacere, anche se non sono legato a queste cose.
In realta` io ho capito che c`e` una divisione solo adesso che non dovrebbe piu` esserci
il confine perche` ne parlano tutti tanto e troppo.

CONFINE DI STATO
VALICO INTERNAZIONALE ITALO SLOVENO DELLA CASA ROSSA - GORIZIA
Non ho mai sofferto, a differenza dei miei genitori, di una barriera indivisibile,
insormontabile, cosa che invece ha patito mia nonna, nel periodo primi anni `80
in cui si poteva andare credo tre o quattro volte al mese in Italia, e lei si bruciava questa
cosa immediatamente perche` doveva andare a prender una boccata di aria italiana se
no usciva fuori di testa.
Anzi per me era divertente passare, c`era una rete, tu davi una specie di talloncino di
carta, avevo un po` paura dei finanzieri.
Per il resto adesso ci sto pensando, adesso che tutti con la bocca piena di retorica
parlano di fratellanza e c`e` addirittura un contatore alla rovescia, manco fossimo a Las
Vegas, su quando la Slovenia entrera` e tutti faremo pace come Tom e Jerry nella
puntata di Natale e tutti sono contenti.
Nova Gorica non ha uno sviluppo urbano coerente, ha strade gigantesche, parcheggi
enormi per i clienti dei casino`. Nova Gorica e` una piccola Las Vegas dell`Ovest, ma ha
la peculiarita` che tutto e` apparentemente pulito, non vedi le siringhe, non vedi le
risse.
Architettonicamente mi fa ribrezzo, ma questo e` un problema che viene supplito dalla
parte vecchia di Gorizia, per questo mi piace questa realta` indisgiungibile: di la` hai il
castello medievale, di qua hai gli ascensori in vetro.
Il piano urbanistico doveva riprodurre la scritta TITO vista dall`alto, avrebbero dovuto
fare un condominio con un cortile interno, hanno fatto la T e la I e poi il comunismo e
finito.
L`unica cosa che e` rimasta a noi e` la Transalpina dove verra` fatto un enorme palco
aspettando Prodi.

PIAZZALE DELLA TRANSALPINA
I SINDACI DELLE DUE CITTA` TOLGONO LA RETE CHE DEMARCA IL CONFINE
Dovrebbe accogliere varie migliaia di persone,dove ci sara` un banchetto notevole con
tutti i vini del Collio, tante strette di mano e tanta falsita`, secondo me.
Sta tutto nelle generazioni, forse per la prima volta l`ignoranza storica permettera` di
ricominciare, magari acquisirla poi perche` la storia e` fondamentale, pero` se si
continua a vivere sulle contraddizioni di partito non basta che i goriziani giovani vengano
a Nova Gorica perche noi abbiamo le pedane per gli skate.

MY GRANDPARENT'S HOUSE
Here on Levada Street in Gorizia my mother was born in a house that was very similar
to this one.
Then in '47 they fled, because after the 23rd dead cat was thrown over their gate, my
grandfather said no, they couldn't take it anymore. They had too many children: four.
So in the middle of the night he grabbed some canvases (my grandfather painted as a
hobby). He grabbed the rolled up canvases, a little money, and off they went to
Yugoslavia.

THE CURRENT HOUSE
It is here in this house that my family arrived, or rather, my grandfather and
grandmother. My grandfather died of cancer rather young, and I only have a few of his
canvases, and a few small things that say little of his strange past.
Unfortunately, my grandmother's family does not have a real historical memory, as a
bomb destroyed her house and killed her family when she was ten. From her side of
the family, I have no information.
However, in my grandfather's case, there is a bit of discussion about his history. I found
some of his old canvases covered in mould, so I decided to remove the painting and
behind it I found this. Well, Considering that my father – being a Slovene - had to flee
from Gorizia, this seemed rather strange to me, but then I asked for more information
from my mother's cousin who still lives in Gorizia. He said "No, that one's mine--your
grandfather insisted on taking it because he was a “black shirt” (A fascist)". I was
literally puzzled. I looked for more information and I found out something that is very
important to me: the Italian-Slavic anti-fascist solidarity.
This region is profoundly influenced by its proximity to the border. It is a little like a ball
rolling down a hill and picking up a little bit of everything it meets on its way down: life,
death, culture, loves. Everything here is unique, just like the two cities themselves.
There is also, of course, this issue of bilingualism, which is very interesting.
I began reading first in Italian, mostly because the books were cheaper.

WORKPLACE
I have always worked in Gorizia. Now that I think about it, as soon as I finished
mandatory schooling, I went immediately to the Art School in Gorizia, and, hanging out
here, exploring the city, I found I was quite comfortable.

NOVA GORICA - SLOVENIA
BASEMENT AND STUDIO
This is my basement, my nest, where in theory I should be doing what I was born to do
- painting. I just finished today a cover for Isonzo-Soča, one of many that I've done.
The cover is for a bilingual, trans-border magazine that covers the history and politics of
the region. Reading it is refreshing, and it's one of the few things in Gorizia that really is
making great strides, not getting old in a pathetic way.
I sign works with the name "Pan", because my last name is Spazzapan. In Slovenian it
was changed to Spacapan and Italians pronounce it "Spakapan". I don't really like this,
even if usually these things aren't that important to me.
In effect I realize that there is a division between the two communities only now, when
there should not be any, simply because everyone talks about it too much.

THE INTERNATIONAL ITALIAN-SLOVENIAN BORDER - GORIZIA
Unlike my parents, I never felt this was an indivisible, insurmountable barrier. My
grandmother also very strongly bore this feeling, so much so that in the early 80's, when
citizens could only cross the Italian border 3 or 4 times a month, she would use up these
opportunities immediately, simply to breath Italian air. If she didn’t do this, she said she
would become mad.
For me, however, crossing was always sort of fun. There was a net, you gave in a kind
of ticket, and I was always a little scared of the guards.
Now I think about the way we talk about the border and the upcoming expansion of the
European Union, and the word on everyone's lips is "brotherhood". There's even a
countdown clock, almost as if we were in Las Vegas! As if when Slovenia enters we'll all
make peace, just like the Christmas episode of Tom and Jerry cartoon--everyone's
happy.
Nova Gorica doesn't have a coherent urban plan. It has enormous streets, parking lots
big enough for casinos. Nova Gorica is a little Las Vegas of the West....except that
everything seems spotlessly clean. You don't see syringes, you don't see brawls.
Architecturally, Nova Gorica disgusts me, but this is a problem that is compensated for
by the old part of Gorizia: this is why I like the conjoined nature of these cities--here
you have an ancient medieval castle, there you have glass lifts.
Originally the urban plan of Nova Gorica was to write out TITO with the buildings, so it
could be seen from above--they were supposed to make condominiums with a
courtyard, they made the T and the I and then Communism ended.
The only thing left is the Transalpine Plaza, where they'll make a large stage on which
Prodi will come and speak.

THE MAYORS OF THE TWO CITIES TAKE AWAY THE LINE MARKING THE BORDER
There will probably be thousands of people and an important banquet with all the great
wines of the region, a lot of hand-shaking and a lot of falseness, in my opinion.
It all depends on the generations. Maybe for the first time ignorance of our history will
allow us to start again, and maybe we will understand history afterwards, because
history is fundamental. However, if we continue to exist with these political
contradictions, we will not move ahead. Right now, the young people of Gorizia are
coming to Nova Gorica because we have places where they can skateboard. That is not
enough.
