La Kartell nasce nel 1949 per volontà di Giulio Castelli, ingegnere
chimico laureato con il premio Nobel per la chimica Giulio Natta.
I suoi studi sulle materie plastiche lo portano a un’intuizione che
si rivelerà geniale e determinante non solo per il destino
dell’azienda, ma per tutta la storia del design italiano e mondiale:
portare la plastica nel settore dell’arredamento domestico.
Nel panorama di quegli anni la plastica è vista ancora come un
surrogato a buon mercato, ma di bassa qualità, di materiali più
nobili. La sfida coraggiosa, trasformare la materia e soprattutto
la sua percezione da parte degli utenti in un elemento alternativo
e di pregio estetico, viene vinta grazie alla tecnologia e
all’investimento sul progetto di design. Da allora sino ad oggi la
storia dell’azienda è costellata di successi che hanno dato un
volto inedito, più allegro e spensierato al design domestico.
Sin dall’inizio designer quali Anna Castelli Ferrieri e Gino
Colombini portano nelle case degli italiani - e non solo - oggetti
d’uso comune colorati e ben rifiniti, dando nuova dignità
all’anonimato di queste tipologie: contenitori, cestini, catini e
bacinelle si animano di nuova vita e non sono più elementi del
paesaggio domestico da nascondere, ma da esibire.
Nuovi designer di fama internazionale, da Arad a Starck, da
Meda a Citterio interpretano ancora oggi questa stessa filosofia di
prodotto che ha reso Kartell celebre in tutto il mondo da oltre
cinquant’anni, realizzando grandi classici del design con
attenzione al contenimento dei costi.
KARTELL
Kartell was established in 1049 by Giulio Castelli, a chemical
engineer that graduated with the Nobel Prize winner for Physics
Giulio Natta. His studies on plastic materials led him to an
intuition that was destined to reveal itself as successful not only
for the company’s destinies, but for the entire history of Italian
and worldwide design: the introduction of plastic in the sector of
domestic furniture. In the scene of those years plastic was still
seen like a low quality, cheap surrogate of more noble materials.
The bold challenge, to transform the material, and above all, the
perception users had of it into an alternative element of
aesthetical value, was won thanks to technology and to the
investment in the design project. Since then and to date, the
company’s history is constellated of successes that have given
domestic design an original, more cheerful and carefree
appearance. From the very beginning, designers like Anna
Castelli Ferrieri and Gino Colombini brought colourful and well
finished objects of common use into the houses of Italians – and
not only – attributing a new dignity to the anonymousness of
typologies such as: containers, baskets, bowls and basins that
were animated with new life and became elements of the
landscape that didn’t need to be concealed anymore, but, were
to be displayed. Nowadays, designers of international fame, from
Arad to Starck, from Meda to Citterio still interpret the same
product philosophy that made Kartell famous all around the
world for more than fifty years, by producing great design
classics, with attention to cost control.

“service” typology in a true furniture element, combining aesthetics
and functionality. They are present in the collections of the New York
MoMA and of the Paris Pompidou Centre.
