The formula is that of the motor glider, the design is derived from the GOAT by Mike Sandlin, reminiscent of the mythical Zoegling. The pleasure of flying "open air" is unchanged, but the materials are modern: we have reviewed the prototype of the most economical (and fun) aircraft on the market today For a while we talked about minimal flight as real philosophy that combines the pleasure of flying, the economy and also a new way to fly, piloting a machine with low wing loading, a reduced speed and with the minimum possible take-off and landing distance requirements. A flight no doubt to be done only in "good weather" that is very technical and requires great control sensitivity and attention to environmental conditions. n achievement made possible by research on materials, on the relations between weight , power and aerodynamic resistance calculated thousand times, on the points of efficiency lost by adding two cables or a wheel, or earned profiling the components exposed to the airflow, on the effects and the commands coordination, on solutions as simple as possible. All thoughts and arguments on which we have been discussing for several months with Francesco Di Martino, the owner of Aviad and builder of this motor glider; the thoughts that vanish when after another take-off with eyes full of sky and with the air on the body which becomes the most important instrument, almost an extension of the mind, the nose and wings follow docile commands while only one hand rules everything: trim, power and speed. If planes are evaluated by the sensations, this motor glider yet tutto: assetto, gas, velocità. A little bit of history Otto Lilienthal is now entered in the myth of aviation as a true father of heavier than air and the first inventor and pilot of gliders, aircrafts that were developed by the Germans immediately after the end of the First World War: after the treaty of surrender they had no possibility to have their own aviation, so they focused their energies on gliders, machines coming at very low cost, launched with bungee cords from a hill. Elementary machines who have trained tens of thousands of pilots starting just from the very basics of piloting. The legendary Zoegling is the father of all motor gliders and the subsequent evolution, the SG38, yet today flies driven by winch in some gliding schools, and it is a star of vintage rallies. The concept of the Aviad motor glider is the same and follows the example that numerous inventors of light sport aircrafts have already set, one for all the Italian Orlando Iannotta who designed the Zefiro, elementary motorized motor glider built with wood and fabric. In the United States, since 2003, flies the glider GOAT designed by Mike Sandlin, from whom the Aviad was inspired in part, even though the size, the structure and the components are completely different. The Mike Sandlin has also realized a motorized version of his biplane motor glider the Bloop, demonstrating that a motor glider with good flight characteristics can be powered with very little power using light mono-cylinder engines as with paramotors. One plane, two souls The motor glider Aviad comes to offer a "new" way buone caratteristiche di volo può essere motorizzato con pochissimi cavalli utilizzando i leggeri monocilindrici da paramotore. The Aviad is in fact realized with modern materials and a technique to allow the plane to be homebuilt from a kit accessible to anyone, without giving up some "advanced" solutions and with a particular attention to safety; it is also designed for a double duty: either as a glider being able to take off and fly autonomously with good range and then soar with the engine off, or as a pure glider by simply removing the motor and moving the seat to maintain the centre of gravity in the right place; in this case it can be towed by an ultralight aircraft or a winch. In both cases, given the low cost, it offers a new opportunity for gliding schools and is also the ideal machine to hire for building up some low cost hours. For example 15 euros per hour for the motor glider, and still less for the towed motor glider that once in the right altitude is able to run also in weak thermals due to manoeuvrability and controlled rate of descent. We highlight the fact that it is primarily a philosophy of flight, which can give great satisfaction (flights of few hours with altitude gain of 3,000 m have been made with the GOAT) and that gives access to the world of aviation to those who can not spend five-figures amounts of cash. How it's made The structure is entirely built with light alloy, made with materials easy to find and offering technical assistance aimed to make the assembly simple. For this reason the junctions cifre a quattro zeri. Anche le giunzioni fra tubi sono realizzate in maniera semplicissima, con il doppio sistema dell’estremità del tubo compressa e forata per i collegamenti fissi, e delle C di collegamento con bullone ed estremità del tubo rinforzata, o con eyebolt per i collegamenti smontabili; il tutto perché l’aereo è ovviamente smontabile per il trasporto Fusoliera: di base è un traliccio costituito da una triangolazione in tubi quadri e un pattino inferiore curvo e ampiamente controventato; il sedile del pilota poggia sulla triangolazione e supporta posteriormente il serbatoio del carburante, mentre la parte posteriore di fusoliera of the frame of the fuselage are almost always made with riveted plates and pipes with square section, while all more complex components are pre-equipped and ready for installation; an example all the wing ribs used to maintain a constant airfoil are made in an absolutely identical way, with two tubular profiles for intrados and extrados welded on collars embracing and sliding along the two longitudinal tubulars which constitute the leading edge and support for the ailerons; once put on their places all the ribs and collars are tightened, the inside compression struts are fixed and steel torsion cables included. In a few words you can build a wing in an afternoon with this system, ready to be covered with dacron 90 g/sqm. Even the joints between pipes are made in a simple manner, with the double system of the pipe end compressed and drilled for links fixed permanently, and C shaped connection with bolt and end of the pipe reinforced, or with eyebolt for dismountable links, all this is because the aircraft can obviously be dismantled for transportation. Fuselage: the basic design is a trellis that consists of a triangulation by square pipes and a curved inferior and widely braced skid. the pilot's seat is also based on triangulation and supports the fuel tank behind it, while the rear part of the fuselage supports the motor mount and wing joints, braced at the front by a diagonal pipe that reaches to the end of the nose. The joints of the wing struts are connected by a chrome molybdenum steel bar 4130. The tail section has been designed precisely for the engine supporta l’attacco motore e gli attacchi alari, controventata anteriormente da un tubo diagonale che arriva all’estremità del muso. Il piano orizzontale ha una superficie complessiva and differs significantly from the GOAT: below we can find a central pipe on which the base of the drift is connected, in the top we can see the upper pipes that support the horizontal level, and two diagonal brace pipes ranging to the base of the drift, this already being very robust, and further braced by steel cables with anti-torsion function. Landing gear : the first solution tested was a one-wheel design, and the considerable width of the ailerons was planned specifically to have the necessary command authority while taxiing at low speed, but a wing assistance for taxiing was always needed, therefore the next step involved two side wheels connected to the wing struts joints, effective enough, but rather draggy. The current solution is the classic bi-cycle landing gear with the main carriage made of two independent wheels and a shock absorber system realized with gas springs and buffer gums as end of travel stops. In the back side the simple wheel is amortized by an elastic band. Tailplane: The vertical stabilizers is of a good size and inside bears the elevator command system . The rudder has an eye-catching aerodynamic compensator. The horizontal plane has a total area of 1.97 sq m and the elevator without trim tab consists of two surfaces connected to the same longeron with two independent control bars connected to the cam inserted into the thickness of the vertical stabilizer. L’alimentazione prevede un serbatoio Wings: the two half-wings are braced by four wing struts of a significant opening equipped with cross-piece, that are leaving than overhang a small part of wing. It is a solution that may not be definite on series aircraft: shorter struts, in fact, would significantly reduce the resistance of the aircraft with a guaranteed gain in efficiency. However, an aerodynamic fairing of an aluminum or mylar sheet is envisaged. The ailerons, that extend for 85% of the ,, wing span, are very characteristic. they are full span ailerons starting from the joints of the upper pipes and tail diagonals; to minimize the secondary effect of reverse yaw the hinges are moved upward, and to make the command lighter two mass balance tabs were added with anti tab function. Engine: Aviad can accommodate any single-cylinder engine with power from 20 hp and more. The currently installed engine is the Moster 185 by Vittorazi, light (just 12.9 kg) and with a power of 25 hp for 7800 rpm, which can provide about 75 kg of load with the propeller of 130 cm diameter. The carburettor is a Walbro diaphragm type equipped with suction airbox, the exaust is muted and the start by tear is positioned exactly over the head of the pilot, at one’s fingertips. Should be noted that the start-up is easy even though the motor has no decompressor. The power supply is a reservoir specially designed by Merin with about 11 litres of capacity: shockproof and explosion proof. It is contained in a pod made of ABS and is equipped with a level indicator. In flight Take-off weight 190 kg, soil temperature 23 ° C, wind 6/7 kts from East. Taxiing and take-off. Once the technique is understood, control on the ground is more than good, even though the turning radius is not very tight: the main carriage is amortized in a soft way and this causes a bit of roll on the ground while manoeuvring, but don’t worry, the real secret is to find the point of balance. for low speed manoeuvres just keep the stick completely forward and ease a little the tail with engine power. the rudder is fairly efficient and direction is maintained without problems, but with gentle movements, more than with real curves. To do a backtrack, the engine must be brought for a moment to the maximum power to raise all of the tail, and with a rudder at end stroke you can turn with a radius of about 5 m, assuming you support the tail with small engine strokes. This is easier to do than to explain. Taking off presents no issues: move the stick forward, bring the engine to full power. the tail rises in a couple of seconds, the acceleration is great, the torque of the propeller is barely perceptible and directional control is impeccable. It comes off after about 50 m with a smooth movement just above the 40 km/h and an initial rate of climb is of 1.5 m/sec, which rises to 2 m/s at 50 km/h. It is worth to mention that adopted propeller is too short, the engine in fact far exceeds the 8,000 rpm and the load is not the one that is expected, performances therefore can only improve with more fine tuned propeller. Level flight. The Aviad proves immediately to be stable and balanced with pleasant commands and with a flight attitude clearly perceptible by the pilot. The engine control system on the stick is effective and you are not bothered with the lack of a classical throttle quadrant. Speeds are maintained in the cruise between 55 and 65 km/h and the stream that blows around you in not a nuisance, but also serves as a perfect speed and even symmetry of flight indicator. at the moment We do not judge the cruise RPM that due to propeller is somewhat high, but with the right combination we retain that a cruise between 60 and 70 km/h is absolutely possible, since the VNE is 90 km / h; during our tests we have reached in level flight the 75 km / h with the engine at 8,200 rpm Manoeuvrability. Although being a prototype with some improvable points, the characteristics of manoeuvrability are very good. Roll is quick and progressive showing an healthy dose of reverse yaw. that is inevitable due to the control surfaces areas and the very low speeds. Activation efforts are light for the pitch command, but they depend only on the chain of command system which uses too small pulleys, which is a small issue that can be fixed with almost no effort and that, to our opinion, makes the anti tab compensators unnecessary. The rudder is light and reactive, and coordination during the direction change becomes extremely educational, since it really takes just a minimum effort to keep a ball in the centre on the turn coordinator. The secondary induced roll effect is also ready and proportionate to the yaw, with pretty good lateral stability. Conclusioni On the other hand the generous aerodynamic compensator of the rudder makes the command prompt and slight but gives a lag in returning to the centre, because it is influencing on the directional stability . two springs of centralization on the pedals are enough to solve this issue. Overall, the piloting is precise and pleasant, with neutral spiral stability and without a hint of dutch roll of the lateral directional phugoid; sizing and excursions of commands appear to be correct. Slow flight and stall Speaking of slow flight could make you smile, given the speed range, but with a little of engine power level flight it is maintained at 45 km/h with the feeling of being almost stationary upwind and with commands that do not miss anything in authority and response, and it is between 45 and 50 km/h that we identify the optimal speed for thermal hunting. The stall is reached below 40 km/h, without warning, but with a smooth and progressive detachment which is recovered in a few meters, with ailerons always fully efficient. Approach and landing. With the engine idling (not in transparency, the resistance of the propeller disc is sensitive) the apparent efficiency is rather reduced, around 8, so there is still a little work to do on the general drag side of the design. . We conduct the approach at 50 km/h with a sweet ramp with full control authority , the landing is a matter of twenty yards with the gear that works flawlessly. the final path angle may be effectively increased by crossing controls in a slip, the realignment is immediate. Conclusions Despite being a prototype there are all the premises for the success and the work of refinement may Pur essendo un prototipo le premesse per il successo ci sono tutte e il lavoro di affinamento potrà solo portare benefici. The Aviad is very pleasant, easy and educational, with performances that once optimized (efficiency between 10 and 12 and speed around 70 km/h) let you fly either with motor on or off with great satisfaction, when there are also weak conditions of soaring. The kit is complete with everything that is necessary to build the plane in a hundred hours, with many details ready for assembly, including the engine, the safety tank and parachute. The price? It is almost a miracle, approximately € 7,500 for the motor glider and approximately € 5,500 for the pure glider with parachute included. On board The pre-flight checks are simple, but numerous, as there are many check points. On the other hand there are no hidden spots. The seat has a steel frame by Storch and is adjustable in two positions according to the weight of the pilot, the belts are four points. And now about the controls, which sure are "personal" on such a unique craft. First of all the stick that holds all the controls for the motor with a very effective solution: in fact the handle contains the switch of the engine mass for ignition at the bottom, protected by a guard box, the hand accelerator that is operated with the fingertip, the PTT button of the radio and a small button with a red LED to check the level of fuel, the LED lights up when there are three litres left in the tank, about 40 minutes of flight cruising. There is also a side button that locks the throttle at cruising mode, being able to leave the command in such a way. This commands solution allows to manage the entire flight with only one hand and in fact often happens something strange: you do not know where to rest the other hand. The pedals are peculiar as well because they are of a suspended type and that leaves your feet without a fixed support, as it would be expected, but you get used to it in a moment. Probably a classic pedals positioned above that take advantage of the horizontal bar fixed support Probabilmente una pedaliera classica posta superiormente che sfrutti l’appoggio fisso della barra orizzontale è più comoda alla lunga in volo e consente al pilota una posizione più aerodinamica a gambe stese.
