Festival del film Locarno, 69th edition
The Festival del film Locarno is one of the best known cinemarelated events worldwide, and has always represented a
fundamental meeting point for professionals of the cinema industry.
Every August Locarno becomes the world capital of auteur cinema.
For 11 days, thousands of cinema enthusiasts, filmmakers and
professionals meet and share their passion for the seventh art.
This meeting is organized in 10 different venues, but the most
stunning one is Piazza Grande, whose magical open-air space
can accommodate up to 8000 viewers. From a geographical
point of view, Locarno is located in the heart of Ticino, the Italian
part of Switzerland. Because of its multi-cultural population and
surroundings, it represents without any doubt the perfect place
to host the Festival and a unique opportunity for the international
cinema to develop. This edition includes many different categories
such as the “Concorso internazionale” section, for full-length films,
the “Concorso Cineasti del presente” – an international competition
for first and second features, the “Pardi di domani” section,
which focuses on national and international short films, and the
“Retrospettiva” category which this year is dedicated to the cinema
in the young Federal Republic of Germany, from 1949 to 1963.
Among the prestigious guests of the 69th edition, Locarno will
welcome Howard Shore, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Bill Pullman.
1
Program 2016 - the sections
Piazza Grande
The Piazza Grande is both the heart of the Festival and its showcase, as its
giant screen is one of the biggest in Europe. The vast piazza, that can seat
up to 8000 viewers, represents one of the finest open-air venues in the entire
world. Each year the program of Piazza Grande offers prestigious screenings,
usually European or even world premieres, introduced by director and cast.
Concorso internazionale
This section aims to highlight and to present to the audience a stimulating
panorama of contemporary auteur cinema. Out of the selected features,
screened as international or world premieres, a jury of some of the major
figures in the cinema industry is charged with choosing which of the competing
movies – fiction or documentary – will win the prestigious Pardo d’oro.
Concorso Cineasti del presente
The Cineasti del presente competition is a fascinating field for discoveries,
dedicated to first and second features from all over the world, aiming to
highlight emerging international filmmakers and to give them the opportunity
to present their talent to the cinema industry. Around fifteen movies will
be seen as premieres and will compete for the Pardo d’oro Cineasti del
presente – Premio Nescens.
Pardi di domani
A crucible of future talent, the Pardi di domani section screens shorts and
medium-length films by young independent auteurs or film school students
who have not yet tried their hand at feature films. The section has two separate
competitions: one limited to recent Swiss productions, the other international,
featuring films from all over the world.
2
Program 2016 - the sections
Fuori Concorso
The “Fuori concorso section” offers to well-established filmmakers the
opportunity to present their latest films – documentaries, fictions, shorts – as
European or world premieres.
Premi speciali
The Pardo d’onore Swisscom celebrates illustrious contemporary filmmakers
who embody the very idea of cinema that the Festival del film Locarno has
supported since its beginnings. This year, this tribute goes to the filmmaker,
writer, poet and artist Alejandro Jodorowsky. The Excellence Award Moët
& Chandon commends outstanding international actors, and counts Isabelle
Huppert, Charlotte Rampling, Gael García Bernal, Victoria Abril, Sir Christopher
Lee, Juliette Binoche, Giancarlo Giannini, and Edward Norton among the latest
recipients. Wishing to highlight a key figure in film, to salute their courage and
capacity of taking risks and supporting auteurs, in 2016 the Premio Raimondo
Rezzonico - Best Independent Producer Award, will be awarded to David
Linde. For the fourth time, the Festival awards the Vision Award – Nescens,
to highlight and pay tribute to people whose creative work behind the scenes,
has contributed to opening up new perspectives of film. This year, the award
will go to the triple Oscar winning composer and conductor Howard Shore.
Named after the supporting Association of the Festival, the Leopard Club
Award pays tribute to someone in film whose work has left a mark on the
collective imagination. Last year the award was attributed to the American
actor Andy Garcia. The tribute is accompanied by a conversation session
with the public and a selection of films.
3
Program 2016 - the sections
Histoire(s) du cinema
The section, a reference to Jean-Luc Godard’s masterpiece, is dedicated to
the history of cinema and represents a special tribute to famous filmmakers
and artists. “Histoire(s) du cinema” also presents recently restored duplicates
of rare and important pieces in cinema history, documentaries about prominent
cinema personalities and works presented by the Cinémathèque suisse as
part of the rediscovered Swiss Cinema.
Open Doors
With the support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
(SDC) of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, the “Open Doors” section aims to assist
directors and producers from countries in the South and in the East of the
world, where independent filmmaking is still very vulnerable. This initiative
focuses on different regions every year; for this edition, we decided to
concentrate our efforts on Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal, in order
to increase the opportunities for collaboration between their young directors
and western cinema professionals. The project is divided in two different out
of competition categories. The first one is the Open Doors Lab, a laboratory
organized for a small group of selected producers and filmmakers, chosen
from the above regions. This initiative helps them to improve their skills
and their knowledge about the cinema industry of cinema, giving them the
opportunity to have individual consultancy meetings, group discussions and
to meet potential partners. The second one is the Open Doors Screenings,
a section of the Festival created in order to introduce its audience to the
cinematographic and cultural landscape of the chosen regions.
Film delle giurie
This section is focused on the screening of movies directed or interpreted by
the members of the main juries. In this way the audience has the opportunity
to discover the talent and the knowledge of these experienced professionals.
4
Program 2016 - the sections
Retrospettiva
Locarno’s “Retrospettiva” section has always represented a deep look into the
past, offering to the audience a big variety of contents regarding many different
topics; from major historical monographs (Yasujiro Ozu, Boris Barnet, Mario
Camerini, Sacha Guitry, Frank Tashlin, Allan Dwan, Orson Welles, etc.) to
thematic selections (such as Another History of Soviet Cinema 1926–1968 or
Asia in Hollywood) and tributes for contemporary directors (Youssef Chahine,
Abbas Kiarostami, Sam Peckinpah, Aki Kaurismäki, etc.). The 69th edition will
be entitled “Beloved and rejected”, the cinema in the young Federal Republic
of Germany between 1949 and 1963.
Semaine de la critique
Founded in 1990, the “Semaine de la critique” is an independent section
organized by the Swiss Association of Film Journalists. Every year this section
shows seven documentaries as world or international premieres, focusing on
innovative films that open new perspectives and debates both for their content
and their way of communicate with the audience. The main goal is to bring
together a wide range of different works with unique visions.
Panorama Suisse
Since 2000, Swiss cinema has had a presence at the Festival del film Locarno
in the Appellations Suisse program. On the occasion of its sixteenth birthday,
this program was restructured and it is now known as “Panorama Suisse”.
This section contains a selection of latest Swiss movies, such as audience
favourite films, festival success or features that has not been released in
the cinema yet. In this way, film lovers from all over the world will be able to
discover and really appreciate the art of Swiss filmmaking.

Retrospettiva “Beloved and Rejected” Cinema in the young Federal Republic of Germany
from 1949 to 1963
This year the Festival del film Locarno dedicates its Retrospettiva section,
organized in collaboration with the Deutsches Filminstitut, to the Cinema in
the young Federal Republic of Germany between 1949 and 1963. This period
is fundamental from a historical point of view, since after the events of World
War II the situation of the nation was critical and both its economical situation
and public opinion were compromised. How did the postwar period influence
the representation of the ordinary in the cinema of West Germany? The aim
of the 69th edition is to answer this question and to focus the attention of the
audience on beloved, despised and rejected movies of this historical period.
Curated by Olaf Möller and Roberto Turigliatto, the Retrospettiva section
includes nearly 80 movies dealing with different topics such as aggression,
love, antagonism and subversion, representing the people’s perception of
that historical period. After its presentation during the current Festival edition,
“Beloved and Rejected” will tour internationally. Among the confirmed
institutions, the Retrospettiva will play in Switzerland at the Cinémathèque
suisse in Lausanne, the Kino Rex in Bern and the Filmpodium in Zürich. Some
movies out of this section will also be shown in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg
and Wiesbaden, at the Cinemateca Portuguesa in Portugal and in Trieste
and Turin. The tour will end in 2017 in the USA at the Film Society of Lincoln
Center in New York and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Excellence Award Moët & Chandon Bill Pullman
Every year, the Excellence Award of the Festival del film Locarno is attributed
to one or more internationally renowned actors. In the current edition this
recognition is assigned to American actor Bill Pullman, born in New York in
1953, and ranked among those great American professionals who not only
distinguished themselves by their versatility and eclecticism, but also by that
quality that only the greatest actors can boast: the ability, when required, to
efface themselves within the film, without self-assertion or taking over the
story, thanks to their special touch, and the extent to which they can mold
their talent to whatever is required by the film, the director and the role itself.
Bill Pullman has indeed always managed to be totally credible, even when
his characters have spanned the most disparate film genres, including the
ironic, gloriously over-the-top science-fiction stretching from Spaceballs (1987)
to Independence Day (1996). We are honoured to welcome him in Locarno
awarding him with the 13th Excellence Award Moët&Chandon, following after
other great actors such as Susan Sarandon, John Malkovich, Michel Piccoli,
Isabelle Huppert, Gael García Bernal, Sir Cristopher Lee, Victoria Abril, Juliette
Binoche, Giancarlo Giannini, and in 2015 Edward Norton.

Pardo d’onore Swisscom - Alejandro Jodorowsky
For the 69th edition of the Festival del film Locarno, the Pardo d’onore
Swisscom will honor filmmaker, writer, poet and artist Alejandro Jodorowsky,
who started his career at a very young age and was able to show his artistic
capacities in a multicultural environment. This exceptional artist started his
career as a puppeteer, poet and theater director and at the age of 23 he moved
to France to join Marcel Marceau’s mime troupe. After five years, he founded
an artistic movement with Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal named Panique,
intended to go beyond surrealism, and as soon as he started his new life in
Mexico, he created the avant-garde theater of Mexico and directed films like
Fando y Lis, El Topo and Santa Sangre, which gave him the status of cult
filmmaker worldwide. Even though he has not completed the film adaptation
of the novel Dune by Frank Herbert, he remains an important inspiration for a
lot of international science fiction directors. From his works, the Festival will
screen La danza de la realidad, also selected for the Cannes Festival 2013,
and Poesia sin fin. The program will also include two of his masterpieces:
La montaña sagrada and Santa Sangre. The award ceremony for the Pardo
d’onore Swisscom will take place in Piazza Grande on the 12th of August,
and on the following day the audience will have the opportunity to talk to
Alejandro Jodorowsky at the Spazio Cinema (Forum). In the past years, the
Pardo d’onore Swisscom was awarded to artists including Samuel Fuller,
Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Cimino and Marco Bellocchio.

Premio Raimondo Rezzonico - David Linde
The Premio Raimondo Rezzonico - Best Independent Producer, offered
by the Municipality of Minusio, is attributed every year to an important
independent producer. Previous recipients were Menahem Golan, Margaret
Ménégoz, Nansun SHI and, in 2015, Office Kitano. This year the Premio
Raimondo Rezzonico will be awarded to American producer and executive
David Linde, who started with the first major position of his career at Miramax
Films, overseeing the acquisition of several internationally renowned movies
such as Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, Woody Allen’s Bullets over
Broadway, international distribution for Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and
Anthony Minghella’s multi-Oscar-winner The English Patient. After Miramax,
he ran Focus Features with co-president James Schamus, producing Roman
Polanski’s The Pianist, Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation and many more
movies, obtaining a total of 53 Oscar nominations resulting in 11 Academy
Awards and showing the world his extraordinary talent. He then continued
his career as chairman of Universal Pictures, and is now CEO of Participant
Media, a global company dedicated to media that inspires social change.

Vision Award Nescens - Howard Shore
The current edition of the Festival del film Locarno wants to highlight and
reward one of the finest film musicians of the world, the Canadian composer
Howard Shore. His career has been a big inspiration for other people, as with
his compositions he gave them the power of dreaming. During his career he
gave life to a lot of soundtracks: from the beautiful melodies of Peter Jackson’s
fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings, to the dramatic sound of Jonathan
Demme’s thriller The Silence of the Lambs, ending with the soundtrack of the
biography movie Ed Wood, by Tim Burton. These are just some of the greatest
examples of Shore’s works, but we know that his creativity still continues on
the road of success and emotions. After many nominations, two Oscars for
the soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings, two Golden Globes for The Lord of
the Rings and The Aviator, and other awards, the Vision Award – Nescens
reconfirms his abilities and his talent for the world of music.
This award follows those previously attributed to the special effects talent
Douglas Trumbull (2013), Mr Steadicam® Garrett Brown (2014) and sound
designer and editor Walter Murch (2015).

laRotonda
Il Villaggio del Festival del film Locarno
From the 31st of July to the 14th of August
Locarno’s rotonda needs no introduction. But laRotonda at the 69th edition
of the Festival del film Locarno certainly does. Because it is still there, as
dynamic and colorful as ever, but with a very different look – obviously
covered in leopard spots. Evening dress? If that’s your thing, go ahead and
dress to impress. But you’ll be just as well received in a t-shirt, bermuda
shorts, flip flops and a panama hat! laRotonda is still the usual unmissable
Festival experience, but with many new highlights this year. A talking-forum
for the FEVI and the Sala, a prelude to the Piazza Grande, a hangout area
for late nights, in other words the beating heart of the Festival.
There you will find live music, DJ sets, themed bars, Food Districts, an Open
Market, as well as comfy chairs, shade, cool and lots of chit-chat. So just
as it always was: food & drink, a chill-out space, music. But this year, with
a Festival sixty-nine years young, we will also be live on Rete Tre, offer VJ
sessions with students from SUPSI and propose Virtual Reality experiences
with the Geneva International Film Festival Tous Écrans.
LaRotonda of #Locarno69 is the place to be. Meet up between the FEVI and
the Ex*Rex, gather opinions on the next screening, share your feelings on
that film which was “great, but ...”, or agree on the success of another: two
hours spent with eyes riveted to the screen. And the spot round, obviously,
to take a break, have a beer and a bite - Tibetan, African, Aramaic, Ticinese,
Indian, Mexican or Filipino. flavors for everyone. So, this year laRotonda is
the Festival village.
This year that’s how laRotonda is. Enjoy it.

Locarno
Piazza Grande, the main square in the heart of the town, with arcades in
typically Lombard style.
The Città Vecchia, characterised by old town houses, magnificent
courtyards, and narrow alleys, is the historic center of Locarno. The Via
San Antonio and the Via Cittadella are the two main streets of the old town.
Also worth a visit is a smaller square, the Piazzetta delle Corporazioni.
Castello Visconteo; This castle of the Visconti family dates back to 998.
It has a 15th-century inner courtyard and richly inlaid ceilings. It is now
an archaeological museum, displaying valuable vases and blown-glass
goblets and artefacts from Roman times. One room commemorates the
Peace Conference held in Locarno in 1925. There is also a bulwalk named
“Rivellino”, attested as a Leonardo Da Vinci work.
Casorella, a town house adjacent to the Castello Visconteo, was built
between 1575 and 1593. Of special interest is the stucco-work of the
loggetta (1596-1605), which overlooks the inner courtyard, and the first-floor
reception room, decorated by the painter Giovanni Caldelli in 1787. It is now
used as a venue for temporary exhibitions of various kinds.
Church of St. Francis (San Francesco). The choir and cupola are 14th century
the nave dates from 1528. Next to the church is the former 13th-century
Franciscan monastery with its refectory (Sala Orelli).
Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso. It was on this spot that the Blessed
Virgin Mary appeared to Fra Bartolomeo d’Ivrea in 1480. The small original
church was later enlarged. The pathway from Locarno to the Sanctuary
(Via Crucis) is flanked by chapels typical of such places of pilgrimage in
Lombardy.

Parco delle camelie - Locarno
The stunning Camellia Park was inaugurated in Locarno in 2005 on the
occasion of the International Camellia Society World Congress (ICS), which
was attended by participants from all over the world. During the five years
since its opening the park has become an international attraction, thanks
both to its landscape value and to its precious botanical features. At the
time of the inauguration 500 camellias were planted and the vast number
of species present guarantees, in principle, a flowering period of 9 months.
The Parks and Gardens Service is mainly responsible for planting and
maintenance of the park and cultivates and propagates camellias in its
nurseries at Locarno Monti. With the help of knowledge acquired during the
ICS Congress and thanks to the Swiss Camellia Society, the Town Council
gardeners have been able to further enlarge their already considerable
collection, exchanging rare species and collaborating with growers from
Italy, Germany, Belgium, the USA and China. The second stage of the
works was initiated in 2007 and comprised the creation of several key
structures and the extension of the park towards the more scenic area
near the lake. The largest flower bed of the park, dedicated to perfumed
species and camellias, has been created next to the amphitheatre, which
will enable visitors to sit in the most panoramic point of the area. From
the top a small stream runs down to feed the new pond, whose waters
reflect an elegant pavilion. The latter houses a series of information panels
on camellias. Today, with the work almost finished, the Park is home
to 850 varieties of catalogued camellias including about forty different
species and ten perfumed hybrids. In addition to these, there are 70 as
yet unidentified camellias, planted at the southern extremity of the public
baths and 130 double camellias, which form a dividing hedge and are
used mainly to provide cut flowers for the annual show held in spring.
The structure of the Park is that of a series of beds forming a kind of
labyrinthine trail where visitors can happily stroll among these wonders
of nature lulled by the relaxing sound of birdsong and waves lapping on
the shore of the lake. Since 2010, Garden of Excellence, The International
Camellia Society.

Ascona
Piazza G. Motta, Ascona’s famous lake promenade, where many high-class
shops and restaurants are located. At the entrance of the promenade is the
Castello dei Ghiriglioni (1250), formerly an aristocratic residence, now a hotel.
Pontificio Collegio Papio; The former papal college has a magnificent twostorey courtyard in the Lombard style (1585-1602) embellished with coatsof-arms and open loggias. It now houses a secondary school. The complex
includes the Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, built in the 14th and
15th centuries, which has a magnificent medieval fresco cycle depicting
stories from the Bible. Note also the fine nave (1399), with coffered ceiling
and Gothic choir. Museo Comunale d’Arte Moderna, a modern art museum
which puts on exhibitions of well-known artists and houses the permanent
collections of the Marianne v. Werefkin and Seewald foundations. The historical
Castello San Materno has returned to its original splendour, after undergoing
careful restoration works, and has now become a modern exhibition venue
for the town of Ascona. The Castello hosts a permanent collection of over
forty art works by outstanding artists from the German region. A typical
15th-century town house; Casa Serodine has a fine Baroque façade with
stucco decoration by Giovanni Battista Serodine (1587-1626). A tangible
sign of the wealth acquired by natives of Ascona who went to live and work
in Rome in earlier centuries. Monte Verità; At the end of the 19th-century, a
group of people advocating a return to nature settled on this hill, renaming
it Monte Verità (Mountain of Truth). It became a cultural and spiritual centre
which attracted revolutionaries, philosophers, writers, poets, ballet dancers
and painters of international renown. The Monte Verità seminar centre now
has an international reputation for the academic activities it organises. Parish
church of Saints Peter and Paul (1530-34). The church is decorated with
15th-century frescos by P.F. Pancaldi-Mola and paintings on canvas by G.
Serodine, in particular a magnificent work hung over the high altar depicting
the Coronation of the Virgin.

Brissago
Brissago lies along the right shore of Lake Maggiore, 196 metres above sea
level. The center is situated along the lakeshore while the rest is spread over
terraced hills at 400 metres. The region benefits from a mild subtropical
climate with varied vegetation where camellias and mimosas grow side by
side with oaks, chestnut trees and gentians. The mountain culminates in the
Ghiridone, 2200 metres high. Lake and hills offer wonderful possibilities: sailing,
windsurfing, swimming, tennis, boat trips, walks and also many mountain trails.
A village with a clear tourist call, it also has a local industry in the shape of
the Tobacco Factory which is world-famous for its cigars. Monuments to be
cited are the churches of Madonna di Ponte and SS. Pietro e Paolo, in pure
renaissance style (Bramantine), the 17th-century Palazzo Branca, the Sacro
Monte chapel, the “Bosco Sacro” or “Holy Wood” where the laburnum grows
(a small tree with clusters of yellow flowers common in temperate climates).
A harmonious combination of lake and mountains, Brissago brings together
North and South in a perfect play of light and colour. www.ascona-locarno.com
Brissago Islands
The Brissago Islands, the botanical garden of the canton Ticino, created
by the Russian Baroness Antoinette de St. Léger in the year 1885, gives
you the wonderful opportunity to escape from noise and the hectic pace of
modern frenetic life. The exotic plants, the colours and perfume of flowers
from all over the world are wonderful in summertime. On the island there is
a hotel-restaurant, and it is possible to organize seminars and banquets or
special events.

Centovalli
The hub of this region is Intragna: it overlooks the fertile Pedemonte countryside
and stands guard over the entrance to Centovalli, “the hundred valleys”.
Intragna’s famous, majestic, 17th-century bell-tower is a prototype of the
architecture favoured by the region’s rustic gentry. Necessity forced many
people to emigrate: they worked as chimney sweepers, grill-cooks, knifevendors and above all as dockworkers in the port of Livorno, Italy. Today one
can still catch a pleasant hint of Tuscan Italian in the speech of the elderly;
set into the iron of a balcony in Palagnedra, one can see the emblem of
the Medici family - just to mention two reminders of that adventurous past.

Valle Onsernone
The villages in the Onsernone Valley lie on high terraces which allow a view
of the wild, rugged valley floor, an ideal place for those seeking authenticity
and antiquity. The rustic buildings, reminders of hardship and poverty in past
times, merge with the impressive, refined houses, some from the 1500’s, which
were built by emigrants who made their fortunes in France or Italy. Villages
such as Auressio, Loco and Russo nestled in picturesque scenery which has
fascinated and attracted artists, writers, and lovers of nature in every period.
A rugged, enclosed valley some thirty kilometres (18 miles) long, from where
it meets Centovalli to the border with Italy, offers the hiker an abundance of
routes: from the nearby pleasant mountain hamlets to the most secluded
alps and peaks ranging from 1500 to 2500 metres a.s.l., rivers and streams
with the clearest of waters to fish in or simply relax alongside, not to mention
the ruins of Bagni di Craveggia with their spring and thermal baths which
were known about as early as the year 1200. In Loco we find the impressive
baroque church dedicated to Saint Remigius, well-documented since the
11th century, and the Museo Vallerano which affords visitors indispensable
information about the history, art and culture of the valley so as to allow them
to know more about it; part of the museum is the old but recently restored
mill which continues to grind corn, just as it once did. www.onsernone.ch

Cardada
Cardada’s mountain, a place offering the visitor many different opportunities
according to his interests and needs, all in a single setting. Cardada means
nature, walks along delightful paths, places to enjoy good food and open-air
sports. Cardada also means coming closer to nature, recognising through
architecture the traces man has left on its landscape, rediscovering those
internal values that can finally be heard at altitude, open spaces to think, read,
speak, get to know yourself. The departure station at Orselina, the arrival
station at Cardada and the cable car itself are the work of the well known
58

and globally admired Ticinese architect Mario Botta. The departure station
seeks to represent a kind of translucent lantern, while the arrival station is a
place of passage, of protection, a “pavilion” with a less obvious architectural
influence than the departure station. The cabin, finally, with the successful
and exciting use of glass and aluminium, and the characteristic teardrop
form is a sign of the lightness of the air and the sky, and also of the liveable
transparency of Cardada. Cardada offers us a protective cushion against the
speed of our modern life; a way of escaping, lifting ourselves up, breathing
deeply, looking around and inside ourselves. The works of landscape architect
Paolo Bürgi: the ‘play’ path, the viewing platform, the geological observatory,
the arrival place of the cabin, offers the alert and responsive visitor the
opportunity to reflect on many themes, going beyond what he has taken for
granted. Departures from Orselina Station to Cardada every 30 minutes from
8.15am to 6.15pm + departure 6.15pm and 8.15pm. Chairlift from Cardada to
Cimetta from 9.15am to 12.15pm and 1.15pm to 5.30pm. Cardada Impianti

Valle Verzasca
The valley of Verzasca is narrow and deep and extends itself from mount
Barone 25 km descending to the Piano di Magadino. At the beginning of the
valley, one of the highest hydroelectric dams in Europe (220 metres) was
built. The landscape is characterised by innumerable cultivated terraces.
Corippo is a village that was able to keep the typical characteristics of
the valley: due to the value of its architecture it was declared monument
of national importance. Many pleasant excursions can be organised from
Corippo. Due to the lack of parking possibilities it is advisable to reach
the village on foot. Lavertezzo is a romantic village and starting point for
unforgettable excursions in the side valleys: Val d’Agro, Val Pincascia, Val
Carecchio, Val d’Orgnana. The river Verzasca carves impressive natural
sculptures on the rocks and its water is of an intense green perhaps unique;
the origins of the word Verzasca correspond to “green water”. Remarkable
also the church of the village of Lavertezzo, the only one in the valley in
baroque style, and the popular “Ponte dei Salti”, with two arcades, also
known as a Roman bridge from the 17th century. Brione Verzasca is the
village situated on a little plateau where the rivers Osola and Verzasca meet.
Sonogno is the last village of the valley, situated in a nice hollow, where
the valleys Redorta and Vogornesso meet. Interesting is the museum of the
Val Verzasca (Casa Genardini), where you see the milk, the wool and hemp
processing, and costumes in the traditional style. At the atelier of the ProVerzasca, also very active, it is possible to buy handmade wool or garments
made of wool. Accesible by Post Bus. For timetables please check at the

Valle Maggia
The Maggia Valley (latin “Vallis madiae”) is the largest valley of the region.
Within 50 km, from the lowest point of Switzerland: the 220 m of Lago
Maggiore, you can reach the highest point of the Ticino (Pizzo Basodino,
3’272 m above sea level).
The Maggia river is considered as a landscape of national interest.
Kingdom of chestnuts, also called “the tree of life”, the Maggia Valley is rich
of important testimony of the past, which you can visit:
-church of S. Maria delle Grazie in Maggia, holy building of the italian Renaissance (1518), rich with frescos;
-exhibition of the painter G.A. Vanoni of Aurigeno (18th century);
-the alpine village of Fusio (1281 m above sea level) with its antique
constructions of stone and wood;
-a short break in a local grotto of unusual beauty;
-the church of Mogno, modern building made of marble, granite and glass,
opened in 1996. This church was designed by the world famous Ticino
architect Mario Botta and offers the possibility to reflect on the way of
construction in an alpine surrounding.

Parco Botanico del Gambarogno
The Botanical Park is situated on the hillside between Piazzogna and Vairano.
Otto Eisenhut skilfully transformed his nursery into a park which covers more
than 17’000 square meters. It has a wealth of plants: about 900 different types
of Camellias, almost as many magnolias, peonies and rhododendrons which
are surrounded by pines, junipers, ivy and exotic firs.

Bellinzona
Besides being the capital of Canton Ticino, Bellinzona is known as the city
of towers, walls and castles (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage). In fact the
medieval town began to develop after the year 1000, adapting to the limited
space between the two hills of Castelgrande and Montebello, and from
1200 it slowly assumed the form of a “civil castle”, a walled extension of
the fortresses guarding it. On the most imposing rock, shaped by a glacier,
rises Castelgrande, the oldest of the castles. Bellinzona offers its visitors
one of the most suggestive examples of late medieval military architecture,
the result of the extensive rebuilding undertaken by Milanese architects and
local labour in the second half of the fifteenth century. A visit to the courtyards
of Castelgrande, which underwent radical architectural restructuring, a
walk along the ramparts to the city gate or on the bastions of Montebello,
surrounded by deep moats while the third but separate castle Sasso Corbaro
stands on an isolated rocky promontory south-east of the other fortifications.
The battlements of Sasso Corbaro, clearly indicate Bellinzona’s exceptional
strategic role as guardian of the alpine passes, bitterly contested throughout
its long and sometimes violent history.
Don’t miss the typical market on Saturday morning.

Lugano
Lake Lugano Region: the part of Canton Ticino South of Monte Ceneri that
projects wedge-like into Lombardy. Easily accessible, it stands at a crossroad
between Northern Europe and Italy. In spite of – or possibly because of –
this openness to outside influences, the region has maintained a distinct
personality, whose unmistakable features are readily identified. Much of its
success as a centre of tourism derives from its temperate climate, moderated
by the presence of the lake, with mild winters and a high number of sunny
days. The landscape has not been spoilt by excessive urbanisation, and its
natural balance of mountain, hill and lowland makes it an agreeable place to
stay in any season, offering a wide range of things to do.

Isole Borromee
Isola Madre, the largest of the three islands, green and fragrant, which
Flaubert defined “a terrestrial paradise”. 330 m. long and 220 m. wide and
still property owned by the Borromeos as is the Isola Bella, is without doubt
the most interesting island from a landscape and botanical point of view. The
island hosts the villa and garden begun by Lancillotto Borromeo in the early
16th century. The park, named Botanical Garden, is divided into five sectors:
gardens, pergolas, groves, drives, bath, with splendid and rare examples of
birds and fowls roaming freely. The villa’s interior hosts restorations of epoch
milieu and a collection of chinaware and livery. Isola Bella, is the most famous
of the three islands that make up the archipelago; the count Carlo Borromeo
had a mansion with a grandiose garden built for his wife Isabella (from which
the island’s name derives), one of the most beautiful examples of 17th century
gardens. Numerous artists worked here, transforming the island into a sort of
incredible ornate vessel, a truncated pyramid of ten superimposed terraces,
joined together by tiny flights of steps, courtyards, caves, baths, fountains
and waterworks, statues, green back-drops and rare plants, that culminate
into a large hemicycle called the “theatre”. The palazzo of the same period,
is an imposing massive structure. Isola dei Pescatori, about 300 m. long and
100 m. wide, hosts, taking its name, an ancient and picturesque fishermen’s
village, with tiny narrow winding streets.
