This only takes us up to 1944, the year it was written, but the following passage gives a useful glimpse into his early development and the easy-going nature that would be a hallmark of his art. In the summer of ’27 Toscanini, an old friend and champion of my father [Giovanni Rinaldi, writer of much good music for the piano] who took a discreet interest in Nino’s fortunes, supported his candidature for a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Philadelphia [which he eventually won]. Toscanini, the sworn enemy of avant-garde music and its major exponent Alfredo Casella, was sincerely afraid that Nino might be influenced by cerebral, arid teaching. In this he was mistaken, for Nino was as pigheaded as they come, with a natural inclination to cock a snook at his teachers by writing, for instance, in the style of Casella while being taught by Pizzetti [1925 and 1926], and in the style of Malipiero while studying with Casella [until he obtained his diploma in Rome, in 1929]. He only forged a personal style later, after abandoning his old circle in the North, with its cliques and parochial attitudes, and repairing to Puglia. 4 He later became Director of the Bari Conservatory, where he remained for more than twenty years. The child prodigy who composed and conducted an oratorio, L’infanzia di San Giovanni Battista for soloists, chorus and orchestra at the age of twelve, grew up to become an outstanding personality of the twentieth century, a time he observed with a clear, cultured mind and innate optimism but to whose fashions he was never enslaved. There were those, like the critic Fedele D’Amico, who considered him to some extent ‘noncontemporary’, yet although his music was not mainstream, neither was it in any way anachronistic; directly expressive, spontaneous, free of theoretical baggage and with no preconceptions, it could certainly be called ‘contemporary’ in feel. But the idiom is that of the nineteenth century. It is melodic, avoids complex harmonies, is redolent of a spirit of awareness and, for that reason, is not polemical. This is the language of a man who took an intelligent view of his own age as he did of the work of his friend Stravinsky, especially in his youth. He writes for the listener and is never afraid to be orecchiabile, easy on the ear, to write tunes. He never strives for superficial ‘relevance’, yet relevance is there in the substance. Above all he never worries about the possibility of his own transparency betraying his borrowings. To the critic Lorenzo Arruga he once confided that he was absolutely convinced that there is no such thing as plagiarism in music. Musical material is common property: if someone takes it and makes it his own, he owes only gratitude to his predecessor. He was always true to himself, whether writing film scores for La dolce vita (1960), Otto e mezzo (1963) and The Godfather (1971), theatre music for Napoli milionaria (1977), the sacred composition Mysterium (1962), symphonic music or the chamber work Concerto-Soirée (1961). When Rota’s opera Aladino e la lampada magica was produced in 1968 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco remarked to him, ‘Commitment? Fiddlesticks! The only “commitment” a composer has is to writing good music!’. Indirectly, in an interview, Rota replied to this with his customary simplicity: You see, when someone says that all I seem to be doing in my music is trying to convey a bit of nostalgia and a good deal of humour and optimism, I think that that is just how I should like to be remembered, with a little bit of nostalgia and a good deal of optimism and good humour. One must be on one’s guard in speaking about the art of Nino Rota. To say that his music appeals to the listener’s heart without requiring any particular effort of understanding is not to imply that his is a simple, much less an elementary, technique. Close study of any of his scores reveals an idiom so direct that it communicates immediately but without giving everything away on its first hearing. Those engaging, heart-warming tunes hide supreme craftsmanship and a deep emotional awareness of the problems of the contemporary world. The music of Nino Rota, wrote Guido Agosti, is the clearest of springs. It has many excellent qualities: spontaneity, crystalline transparency, an infallible balance of each element of composition. Here we never encounter forced rhetoric, violence, heaviness, opaqueness, but can admire the terse limpidity of every detail. Nino Rota possessed – not as something laboriously acquired but as a gift – an innate, almost Hellenistic sense of the form and mystery of style. The time-lag between Rota and a composer such as Martucci seems almost negligible. And yet in the intervening years the world had seen Impressionism, Viennese twelve-tone music, the Ballets russes for which Stravinsky wrote, and the Great War. To all of this Rota responded with the serenity of a deliberately tonal inspiration, invulnerable because of his candid expressivity, simple forms and indisputable quality of ‘beauty’. Note that word, because the goal of Rota’s art seems to be precisely this, to affirm pure beauty as the raison d’être of art, especially the art of a period like the twentieth century so aggressively attentive to (or 5 CHAN 9832 BOOK.qxd 30/8/07 12:18 pm distracted by) other values such as scholarship and experimentation, atonality, structuralism, etc. – big words that seem to have little to do with a poetic stance such as Rota’s. Turning his back on revolutionary innovation, he looked instead to tried and tested traditions with at most the occasional nod in the direction of impressionistic ideas, content to embellish an ancient idiom with the noblest taste and subtly re-shape it with unmistakably individual melodic and harmonic invention. The opening movement of the Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano (1973) is charged with a restless irony expressed in shifting colours and dreamy spaces suspended in a time defined only by Rota’s imagination. This melody-rich fantasia for three instruments illustrates the composer’s singular ability to tell stories without actors, about things that never happened, through sound-images alone, almost as if he were telling us that his encounter with Fellini was destiny, not chance. The middle movement is a drawn-out sigh, a melancholy dialogue for clarinet and cello, with the piano a silent, sympathetic observer. The finale is no less than a hymn to the bizarre poetry of play, a festive carousel for the three participants in a characteristic series of spellbinding soundimages. Franco Abbiati, a distinguished musicologist who has written extensively and perceptively about Rota, observed that a popular style, 6 Page 6 recently rediscovered Renaissance songs and Rota’s own gift for ecstatic, transparent tunefulness, are the most important elements in the Sonata for Viola and Piano (1935) which is unmistakably Rota’s. The Allegretto with which the work opens is elegant and serenely expressive, with a clear and very attractive lateromantic feel. The viola’s first subject is gentle and sweet while the second, uttered by the piano, is austere and gives the impression of offering answers to confidential questions. An argument begins, but the tone remains calm, the atmosphere almost domestic. The central Andante gives voice to an intimate poetic discussion of opposing sentiments, the mood initially pensive before relaxing into a sunny lyricism that could almost be read as a homage to Brahms. His influence is even more apparent in the Allegro finale in which sad, passionate tunes, complex harmonies and longer, more architectural phrases combine to create specific references. The Trio for Flute, Violin and Piano (1958) is among the last of Rota’s works and uses techniques akin to those of contemporary serialism. Colours and shapes, objectives and means shift constantly while, in an atmosphere of torment suggested by sudden piercing shrieks, the echo of distant melodies is heard. Melodies no longer linear and serene, but subtle and distressed. Too much has happened; the insecurity and the world-shaking drama of the age in which he was now living seem to have taken Rota by surprise and he could no longer ignore them. This applies particularly to the slow central movement. In the concluding movement we sense a restless realism. Here, in a section structured around an unaccustomed multiplicity of moods and incidents, the tormented clamour of modern life is presented with disenchanted irony. It is with a sense of security regained that we return to the conciliatory calm of Nino Rota’s natural voice, a voice indispensable for the present age. Pure inspiration, a crystalline fantasy of notes consorting for the pleasure and relief of the spirit. The Sonata for Violin and Piano (1937) is seamlessly eloquent from the first bars of its opening Allegretto cantabile. The violin is charged with one of the most melancholy, most touching passages in music, an inexhaustible melody that changes colour in each of the three movements and reaches its culminating point in the central Largo where – after an austere, even violent opening – it plucks at the very heartstrings. The soloist is borne along on delicate droplets of accompaniment before taking his farewell in the ineffable sweetness of the final Allegro whose contrasting pictures mark stages in the great and noble adventure of Nino Rota’s life-work. The Ensemble Nino Rota was recently formed in Milan by Massimo Palumbo aiming to highlight chamber works of Nino Rota and of other twentieth-century Italian composers. It comprises musicians experienced as orchestral leaders as well as soloists who have been prize-winners in many major international competitions. The Ensemble’s concert activities have rapidly become widespread, with several broadcasts for European radio stations. Massimo Palumbo was born in Milan. He began his piano studies at the age of five with Alberto Mozzati, later enrolling at Milan’s Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory and at the age of seventeen winning the UNICEF International Competition. He has attended master-classes held by Rubinstein, Aldo Ciccolini and Jean Micault as well as Lutoslawski’s composition course in Warsaw. He is frequently invited to play at important venues and for prestigious concert societies throughout Europe, and has toured Brasil, the USA and Japan gaining widespread critical acclaim. In addition to his active concert career, Massimo Palumbo has made a considerable number of recordings and was awarded the Italian critics’ National Recording Award for two consecutive years. Jahrhundert an.
