In una piccola tenuta di circa 10 ettari di uliveto sorge il centro di turismo rurale POGGIO
POZZETTI, con appartamenti ricavati in una
masseria completamente ristrutturata secondo l'antica tradizione artigianale siciliana, in cui

restoration of a typical farm named masseria,
according to the old Sicilian, artisan tradition, with

UN COLPO D’OCCHIO
AT A GLANCE
ENZA VAZZANA
L
a vocazione di CEFALÙ sino agli inizi
degli anni ’50, fu legata principalmente ai
prodotti che forniva il territorio ed il mare,
si era ancora lontani dal concepire lo sfruttamento
di una risorsa che, di lì a pochi anni, sarebbe stata
trainante: il Turismo.
Dobbiamo ai nostri cugini d’oltralpe, nel 1951,
l’avere intuito le potenzialità della cittadina, che
conglobava un singolare trascorso ancora intonso,
il borgo medievale, ad una natura incontaminata
che offriva suggestivi scorci panoramici a 360
gradi. Il mare, la Rocca, i lidi sabbiosi, calette
nascoste, antichi palazzi, gente ridente e l’irresistibile richiamo del sole.
Non si poteva pretendere oltre, una struttura turistica avrebbe trovato un habitat ideale a Cefalù.
La famiglia Agnello fornì i terreni, i francesi misero in pratica l’iniziativa di realizzare un campeggio immerso nel verde di un promontorio sul
mare, aspro e selvaggio, dominato dalla settecentesca Villa Baronale e protetto dalla Chiesetta di
Santa Lucia: nacque il Village Magique. Il richiamo, enfatizzato da mirate campagne pubblicitarie,
sortì l’effetto desiderato, migliaia di turisti affollarono il Villaggio e Cefalù iniziò a godere della
ventata di novità che la proiettò, quale meta turistica, in campo internazionale. La necessità di fornire servizi più adeguati agli ospiti del Villaggio,
pur mantenendo il contesto territoriale intonso,
portò, sei anni dopo, alla realizzazione delle paillottes, le capanne in canna con copertura in fibra
vegetale che sostituirono definitivamente le tende.
Tutto il resto fu lasciato alla natura.
Cambio delle strutture, cambio del nome, da quel
momento il Village Magique divenne Club de la
Meditèrrenée. Quella mirabile intuizione, per il
rispetto che si ebbe dei luoghi, oggi si potrebbe
definire un’eco-idea, dove “eco” ha il doppio
senso di ecologia e di profitto economico, che si
estese inevitabilmente anche alla città. Sorsero
alberghi, ristoranti, bar, ritrovi, discoteche, negozi
ed altre iniziative atte ad allietare il soggiorno dei
turisti richiamati trasversalmente anche dal Club.
Tante idee, sino allora sopite negli animi cefaludesi, o poco espresse, si concretizzarono, fu una
fucina di progetti che investirono i campi più
disparati: la moda, l’arte, lo sport ed il cinema che

he vocation of Cefalù, until the beginning of
the 1950’s, was mainly the produce that the
land and sea provided, it was still a long way
to for foreseeing the exploitation of a resource that from
there, in a few years, would be a motivation:Tourism.
In 1951 the French foresaw the potentiality of the
city which combined a unique and still untouched
past, the medieval village, to an uncontaminated
nature that, at 360 degrees, offered sensational
panoramic views.
The sea, the rock, the sandy beaches, hidden coves,
antique palaces, happy people and the irresistible call
of the sun.
One couldn’t expect more than this, a tourist structure
would have found an ideal environment in Cefalù.
The Agnello family provided the land, the French put
into practice the initiative to realise a camping site
immersed in the green of a promontory by the sea,
rough and primitive, dominated by the 18 th century
Villa Baronale and protected by the little church of
Saint Lucia: the birth of the Village Magique.
The attraction, emphasized by targeted publicity campaigns, led to the desired effect, thousands of tourists
flocked to the Village and Cefalù began to enjoy the
wave of change that had projected her to an international field.
The need to supply more adequate services for the
guests of the Village, although maintaining the territorial untouched context, brought after six years, the
hutted accommodation cane huts with vegetable fibre
roofs that permanently replaced the tents.
Everything else was left naturally.
Change of structures, change of name, from that
moment the Village Magique became the Club de la
Mèditerranée.
That marvellous insight, for the consideration they
had of the resort, today can be defined as an “eco”
idea, where “eco” has the double meaning of ecology
and of economic profit, that has inevitably extended to
the town.
Hotels, restaurants, bars, meeting places, discotheques,
shops and other ventures sprang up to enliven the
tourists stay and, to indirectly, lure them to the Club.
Many ideas until that time lay dormant in the minds
of, or were not voiced, by the people of Cefalù these
materialised into a source of projects that concentrated
on various fields: fashion, art, sport and the cinema

di vetrate dipinte, in sostituzione dei bianchi
vetri, si è operata una simbiosi tra il materiale e lo
spirituale, i raggi solari si bagnano in queste pagine
di colore e narrano, come un libro, i punti fondamentali della dottrina cristiana. Un percorso aereo
che ricalca il cammino tra le colonne istoriate
della navata centrale, la strada verso la coscienza
divina e la redenzione. Come in cielo così in terra.
Dai sei giorni della Genesi della Navata Centrale
sviluppati in 14 vetrate, alla storia dell'Apostolo
Pietro trattata nelle 9 vetrate della navata laterale
Nord che si specchiano con le 9 della navata laterale sud che narrano della vita dell'Apostolo Paolo.
Il Transetto accoglie l'Apocalisse sviluppata in 16
lastre. Nella Protesis, nel Diaconicon e nelle Absidi,
otto vetrate sono dedicate alla vita di Gesù,
dall'Assunzione di Maria alla Resurrezione.
Il Museo Mandralisca un tempo dimora del
Barone Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca, che raccoglie nelle sue sale d’epoca, sia reperti archeologici,
testimonianze dei trascorsi di Cefalù, sia le raccolte
del Barone, mecenate della cultura e dell’arte, che
donò ai suoi concittadini le rarità da lui collezionate: libri, arredi, conchiglie, dipinti tra i quali spicca “ll ritratto di Ignoto” di Antonello da
Messina; il palazzetto bicromo dell’Osterio
Magno; il Lavatoio Medievale, alimentato dal
gelido fiume Cefalino.E la notte Cefalù non
dorme, continua la dinamicità assorbita col sole:
mostre, spettacoli sotto le stelle o nel piccolo
gioiello ottocentesco del Teatro Comunale
Salvatore Cicero; lidi che si spogliano degli
ombrelloni e delle sdraio, occupati sino al tramonto, per trasformarsi in discoteche sul mare; ristoranti incastonati tra le mura di antiche dimore, che
offrono le gustose creazioni di valenti chef.
A Cefalù le iniziative sorgono e si sviluppano per
soddisfare le richieste che mai verranno a mancare
per la simbiosi perfetta tra luogo e uomini con
eccellente colpo d’occhio e lungimiranza.

Genesis developed in 14 of the nave windows, treated

unknown man” “ll ritratto di Ignoto” by Antonello
da Messina; the little palace of two coloured stones
the “Osterio Magno”; the medieval wash place,
fed by the icy waters of the river Cefalino.

S
ant’Ambrogio, situato sulla costa settentrionale della Sicilia, ad Est di Cefalù, è una
frazione del Comune di Cefalù, da cui dista
circa 5 Km.
Esso ha una storia recente: alla fine del XVI secolo venne scelto per la costruzione di una torre di
avvistamento e comunicazione aragonese, nel
corso dell’800 sorse un Casale rurale per i contadini che coltivavano le terre degli aristocratici
cefaludesi. Presto il casale diventò un villaggio,
perché vi confluirono famiglie contadine di
Pollina, Castelbuono e Cefalù, e poi si stanziò
altra gente, proveniente da vari centri dell’Isola
per la costruzione della sottostante ferrovia, svolgendovi attività artigianali. La Chiesa, esistente dal
1938, come testimonia una lapide che ivi si trova,
prima fu Rettoria, dipendente dalla Cattedrale di
Cefalù, poi divenne Parrocchia autonoma, quando, tra la I° e la II° guerra mondiale S. Ambrogio
raggiunse i 900 abitanti.
Non si sa come sia sorto il culto di S. Ambrogio
che oltre a dare il nome al villaggio, ne è stato per
alcuni anni anche patrono e nulla si sa sul culto
della Madonna della Salute che negli anni trenta
subentrò a S. Ambrogio come Patrona.
Subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale
Sant’Ambrogio cominciò a spopolarsi a causa di
una forte immigrazione, soprattutto verso gli Stati
Uniti D’America ed, in minore quantità, nel Nord
dell’Italia e nei paesi del centro nord europeo.
Ma ogni anno tornano tutti, in estate, la terza
domenica di luglio per la festa della Madonna
della Salute che attira pellegrini da tutti i paesi
del circondario.
Si tratta di una vera sagra paesana, nella quale i
borghegiani ripropongono antichi giochi, musiche
e canti, che divertono molto e, nello stesso tempo,
tengono vivo il ricordo della propria storia.
L’atmosfera che si vive oggi a S. Ambrogio non è
molto lontana da quella dei tempi andati: gli abitanti, sono cordiali e disponibili ed emanano un

Sicily, and, to the east of Cefalù, comes under the
patronage of the town hall of Cefalù and is
about 5 km from same.
It has a relatively new history: at the end of the 16 th
century it was selected for the construction of a sighting
and system of communication tower, during the 800’s a
country hamlet sprung-up for the farming community
that cultivated the land for the aristocrats of Cefalù.
Very soon the hamlet became a village, because the
families of the workers from Pollina, Castelbuono and
Cefalù joined them and then other people from various
places on the island came to work on the railway being
built below the town, developing handcraft activities.
The church has existed since 1938, this is confirmed
by the evidence within the building of a memorial stone
to the fact that there was a rectory there before this
under the authority of the cathedral of Cefalù, it then
became an autonomous parish when between the first
and second world wars Saint Ambrogio’s population
grew to 900 inhabitants.
It isn’t known how devotion to Saint Ambrogio started
although his name was given to the village and he was
for many years the patron Saint and nothing is known
of how the devotion of “Mother of health” (Madonna
della Salute) came into being and who in the 1930’s
succeeded Saint Ambrogio as the patron Saint.
Soon after the second world war Saint Ambrogio began
to be depopulated because of a great emigration wave
above all to the United States of America and in smaller numbers to the north of Italy and places in central
northern europe.
But every year, in summer, many return for the third
Sunday in July when the town celebrates the festival of
the Mother of Health which attracts pilgrims from all
surrounding places.
We are talking about a real village festival, during
which the villagers revive antique games, music and
songs which they enjoy immensely and at the same
time keep alive the memory of their own history.

calore umano che difficilmente oggi si può trovare nelle altre realtà. L’economia semplice e un
tessuto sociale prevalentemente contadino e rurale spingono gli abitanti ad essere spontanei, disponibili ed autentici. I giovani cercano di emulare i
coetani più evoluti, cercano di adeguarsi ai nuovi
tempi ma in fondo restano sempre dei ragazzi
semplici, rispettosi delle regole e legati agli affetti
familiari. Parecchi di loro hanno seguito o stanno
seguendo corsi di studio che possono aiutarli ad
inserirsi più facilmente nel mondo del lavoro.
Non mancano le bellezze naturali e scorci panoramici che lasciano senza fiato: il Belvedere rivolto
verso la nota “Rocca” di Cefalù offre spettacolari
tramonti, stradine linde e scalinate mozzafiato
offrono caratteristici scorci sul mare sottostante, un
mare azzurro, limpido e trasparente, come pochi.
Affacciandosi dal Belvedere questa distesa azzurrognola appare in tutta la sua bellezza, il paese, infatti, sorge su un promontorio che si affaccia sul
mare e dal quale si può intravedere tutto il litorale
che porta da Cefalù a S. Ambrogio, costituito da
una macchia mediterranea con spiagge accessibili
o dal paese attraverso una scalinata che porta
direttamente al mare o in macchina costeggiando
la strada statale 113. Parte della spiaggia è gestita
da due lidi, attrezzata e fornita di ampi parcheggi
custoditi e da servizi di bar e ristorante.
Accanto si trova un’altra piccola spiaggia libera
circondata da scogli, alcuni dei quali emergono
maestosamente dall’acqua pescosa e poco profonda per un lungo tratto. La posizione geografica di
S. Ambrogio è invidiabile: da un lato lo sguardo
può spaziare sul mare, alla cui estremità, nei giorni limpidi e sereni, si possono intravedere le Isole
Eolie, dall’altro lato si intravedono i monti e i
suoi centenari alberi del Parco delle Madonne e
la Serra Guarneri. L’eterogeneità del paesaggio è
proprio uno dei punti d’interesse della zona:
mare e monti; passare in pochi minuti dalle calde
e assolate spiagge al fresco dei monti e al verde e
all’ombra degli alberi. A Sud di S. Ambrogio, se ci
si inerpica per un sentiero che attraversa gli uliveti e gli agrumeti delle contrade Torrazza e
Saponara, si giunge nella contrada Guarneri, dove
ci si può immergere nella tranquillità del luogo,
nella bellezza del panorama, nella varietà della
vegetazione. L’altitudine e l’esposizione a Nord –

The simple economy and a social fabric predominantly
rustic and rural leads the inhabitants to be naturally
spontaneous, willing and genuine.
The young people try to emulate their more open
minded contemporaries, they try to update to modern
times but at heart still remaining simple people respectful of the rules and tied to family values.
Many of them have attended or are attending courses
that may help them to find employment more easily.
Natural beauty is not lacking and panoramic views that
are breath taking: the belvedere facing towards the
remarkable rock of Cefalù offers spectacular sunsets,
pristine streets and wonderful flights of steps offer
panoramic wiews of the sea below, a blue sea clear and
transparent as very few these days.
Looking from the belvedere this expanse of bluish grey
appears in all its beauty, the place, infact, rises on a
promontory that faces on to the coastline from Cefalù to
Saint Ambrogio, which displays lush mediterranean
flora with accessible beaches reached by driving along
the local main road (S.S. 113).
Part of the beach is administered by two lidos, equipped
and furnished with large attended parking sites and
bars and restaurants.
Nearby you find another public beach surrounded by
rocks, some of which rise majestically from the fish filled
water and the sea at this beach is shallower for quite a
distance.The geographical position of Saint Ambrogio is
enviable from one side a birds eye view of the sea from
the end of which on clear and serene days one sees the
mountains and their ancient trees within the Madonie
natural parks and the Serra Guarneri.
The mixed composition of the scenery is just one of the
interesting points of the area, either sea or mountains,
one can pass, in fact, in only a few minutes from the
hot sundrenched beaches to the freshness of the mountain greenery, and the shade of the trees.
To the south of Saint Ambrogio following a track, that
passes between the olive groves and citrus orchards of
the Torrazza and Saponara zones you come to
Guarneri where you can absorb the tranquillity of the
place, the beauty of the panorama, the variety of the
vegetation.

the flourishing wineyards for the use of the local fami-

Est rendono rigogliosi la vite che cresce nei
numerosi piccoli vigneti per uso familiare e i frassini, gli alberi della manna che stanno scomparendo e che crescono solo in pochi comuni del circondario come Pollina e Castelbuono. Un bosco
di sugheri e ornielli e l’innesto del parco rendono famosi le riserve naturali del Guarneri e la
Serra, una cresta di rocce rossastre, ravvivate dal
sole al tramonto, quasi irrangiungibili e per questo meritevoli di sfida.
A guardarla dà l’impressione di un ampio anfiteatro naturale che corona l’intero ambiente, lasciando incantati i visitatori. Poco distante sorge una
piccola chiesa, costruita circa 100 anni fa dai contadini della vicina contrada Lancenia, vicino a
poche case e ad un Bed and Brekfast aperto
soprattutto durante il periodo estivo.
A poche centinaia di metri dalla chiesetta, alla
punta estrema che dà su “cappidduzzu”, là dove
l’occhio si perde fino a Capo d’Orlando, si trova un
piccolo agglomerato di case, tutte in pietra viva,
con un naturale cortile che richiama i lavori di un
tempo e la serenità della poca gente che l’abitava.
Le bellezze naturali di queste contrade hanno
richiamato, negli ultimi anni, abitanti dal circondario che hanno costruito una miriadi di ville
che sovrastano S. Ambrogio da sud – est, così
durante il periodo estivo il paese con l’arrivo dei
villeggianti e dei turisti, il ritorno degli emigranti, si sveglia per alcuni mesi, le strade si animano,
e tutti, giovani e meno giovani, s’incontrano, si
conoscono, stringono amicizia. Anche le associazioni del luogo si danno da fare per rendere più
allegre e divertenti le vacanze, organizzano sagre,
manifestazioni sportive, culturali e ricreativi, passeggiate attraverso i vari sentieri che collegano le
varie contrade, visite guidate a piedi e non nei
luoghi più caratteristici, visite ad una vicina
azienda vinicola che produce vini di ottima qualità, esportati in tutto il mondo, passeggiate a
cavallo, serate danzanti, giochi, degustazioni di
prodotti tipici, falò e grigliate notturne.
Animano l’attività commerciale del borgo un bar,
tabacchi, un mini-market, una trattoria-pizzeria,
un bar panineria, creperia, sala giochi, internetpoint, ritrovi abituali durante tutto l’anno per la
gente del luogo e d’estate punti d’incontro anche
per i visitatori.

of the neighbourhood such as Pollina and Castelbuono.
A wood of cork trees, ash trees and the nearness of the
natural reserve account for the fame of the natural
reserve Guarneri and the Serra, a ridge of reddish rocks
brightened up by the sun at sunset, almost inaccessible
and because of this worthy of challenge.
Looking at it, one gets the impression of a vast natural
amphitheatre that crowns the entire environment, leaving visitors spellbound.
A short distance away appears a little church built
about one hundred years ago by the villagers of the
nearby Lancenia area, nearby there are a few houses
and a “Bed and Breakfast” open mainly during the
summer period.
At a short distance from the little church, at the
extreme point that becomes a peak, the eye can see as
far as Capo D’Orlando, one finds a small group of
houses all made in stone with a natural courtyard that
recalls the jobs of other times and the serenity of the
few who lived there.
The natural beauties of this area have in the last few
years recalled the inhabitants from surrounding areas,
who have constructed a multitude of houses that tower
above Saint Ambrogio from the south east, therefore
during the summer period, the area, with the arrival of
holiday makers and tourists, the return of the emigrants,
becomes alive for some months, the streets liven up and
all the young and not so young meet, get to know each
other and strengthen friendship.
Also the local organisations get busy to make the holidays more cheerful and enjoyable through walks crossing
the various panths that connect the various small places,
guided visits on foot to more known areas, visit to a
nearby wine producing business that produces wines of
excellent quality that are exported all over the world,
horse rides, dancing evenings, games, the sampling of
typical local products, bonfires and barbecues of an
evening.
The commercial activity of the village is enlivened by a
mini-market, an eating house/pizzeria, a sandwich,
bar, pancake bar, a games hall, internet point all of
which are open during the year for the local people as
well as visitors.
