Today we are proud to announce the commencement of a seven month campaign, entitled, “Renew and Rebuild”, leading up to the 100th anniversary of the first mass at our historic church, which we will celebrate with Cardinal Dolan on September 2, 1917. As the campaign title infers, the goal is to renew our pastoral life and to rebuild (restore) our church and physical plant. The continued physical restoration will be more obvious to the eye, but the renewal of parish life is much more important: if we have a beautiful edifice and stale parish life, we will become a museum. We don’t want that! REBUILD…. In the coming weeks the parish council will present to the entire parish the tentative plans for the restoration of the interior of the church. There will be a short period for comment and revision before we begin fundraising and launch these projects. More to come on all of this…. RENEW….. The most important part of this campaign is the renewal of parish life. As we read so often in the Sacred Scripture, God calls us to be his apostles. This means we are sent by Him to be salt of the earth and light of the world. Our campaign aims to connect every adult parishioner with a parish ministry. We understand that life circumstances affect your ability to s erve. Work schedules, health, age, and family commitments all come into play. With this in mind, the list of ministries and service opportunities inserted into today’s bulletin takes into account these diverse circumstances. I think you will agree that this list offers something for everyone. God bless! Father Jonathan February 12, 2017 CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Sunday Gospel: (Matt 5:17-37) CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TIME TO ENRICH OUR FAITH “Celebration of Christian Mysteries” Class Continues tomorrow 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Parish Center Sponsored by the Archdiocesan Catechetical Office Bring a family member or friend! Saints of the Week February 14th Sts.
