he ASHSAA girls’
soccer
league
kicked off on Saturday, January 21,
2017 for both the varsity and
junior varsity divisions at the
Pago Park Soccer Stadium.
Varsity defending champions Fa’asao-Marist Cougars
did not play but in division
results the Samoana Sharks
beat Leone Lions 4-2 and South
Pacific Academy Dolphins
drew with the Tafuna Warriors
1-1.
In J-V games, defending
champs Fa’asao-Marist started
off their campaign with a big,
5- 0 win over the Sharks while
the Warriors beat Leone 3-0.
Games are scheduled for
Saturdays only and the varsity
division will run a single, round
robin format plus two extra
games. These two extra games
will be played at the end of
the round robin and have been
pre-selected by the DOE’s Athletics Department.
Six high schools are participating in the varsity division
— Fa’asao-Marist, Samoana,
SPA, Tafuna, Leone and
Faga’itua High School.
In the J-V bracket, five
teams are vying in a double,
round robin competition —
Fa’asao- Marist, Samoana,
Tafuna Leone and Faga’itua.
The team with the most wins
at the end of the double round
robin format will be crowned
champions.
VARSITY
SHARKS 4, LIONS 2
Lydia Amisone completed
a hat trick for the Sharks in
helping her team beat the Lions
last Saturday.
Samoana led 3-1 at the completion of the first half before
eventually winning 4-2.
DOLPHINS 1,
WARRIORS 1
Tafuna scored first, but a
determined SPA fought back to
equalize as the game ended 1-1.
JUNIOR VARSITY
COUGARS 5, SHARKS 0
Fa’asao-Marist started their
campaign for back-to-back
championship titles with a
convincing, 5-0 win over the
Sharks.
At the end of the first half it
was 2-0, and three goals in the
latter half would make up the
game’s final tally. Olivia scored
two goals for Fa’asao-Marist.
WARRIORS 3, LIONS 0
Tafuna easily won against
Leone 3-0 in their opening
match of the season.

FOXBOROUGH,
Mass.
(AP) — Bill Belichick is on to
the Atlanta Falcons.
After taking a day to review
and recharge following his
team’s AFC championship
game win over Pittsburgh,
the New England coach said
Tuesday that the coaching
staff’s preparations are fully
underway for the Super Bowl.
The Patriots are preparing to
make their seventh Super Bowl
berth during the Belichick era,
making them veterans at this
point in handling the various
logistics involved with the big
game. Belichick said it’s helped
them turn the page “about as
quickly as we could.”
“We’re on to Atlanta now as
a coaching staff. We’re deep in
the middle of them,” he said.
New England has fond memories of the Super Bowl played
in Houston, having won in 2004
on Adam Vinatieri’s field goal
in the closing seconds to beat
the Carolina Panthers.
“There was a big matchup
against our kind of ‘no-name’
offensive line and a very good
defensive front that the Panthers had,” Belichick recalled.
But Belichick says that’s the
furthest thing from his mind as
his team prepares for a Falcons
team it hasn’t seen much on
film this season with just five
common opponents (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle,
Arizona and Denver).
The Patriots do have some
familiarity with Falcons coach

sive coordinator of the Seattle
Seahawks when the teams met
in the Super Bowl two years
ago.
“They have some of their
own characteristics and of
course the players are different,
so that makes it different,”
Belichick said. “But schematically there is quite a bit of
carryover.”
One of the key differences,
he said, is that the Falcons seem
to bring a little more pressure
than Seattle ran.
Belichick also sees similarities in the schemes, which rely
on players of similar skillsets
such as Seattle’s Kam Chancellor and Atlanta’s Keanu
Neal.
“Go right down the line —
they’re similar,” Belichick said.
This will also be the second
straight game that the Patriots
defense will have to contend
with a dynamic receiver.
Julio Jones had nine receptions for 180 yards and two
scores in Atlanta’s NFC championship game win over Green
Bay, but will be challenged by
a New England secondary that
has given up just two passing
touchdowns in the playoffs.
“He’s probably just one of
the most dynamic players in
the league,” Patriots defensive
coordinator Matt Patricia said.
“I usually don’t wind up comparing him to other people; I
wind up comparing other people
to him just because of his skill
set and his ability.”
The team will have meetings
Wednesday and then return to
the practice field on Thursday.
Patricia is in his fifth season
leading the Patriots’ defense,
but has been a New England
assistant since 2004.
While he’s witnessed the
interactions of several different
teams in that time, he said this
group has a vibe in the locker
room that is unique.
It is a dynamic that he’s
looking forward to seeing grow
over these next two weeks.
“If you play at this point in
the season, you play this late in
the season and you’re blessed
enough to do that, I think the
guys just have that kind of special bond,” he said.
“They have a good time with
each other but they also know
when we’re in the meetings,
we’re grinding, we’re working,
we’re studying.
SANTA CLARA, Calif.
(AP) San Francisco 49ers CEO
Jed York is preaching patience
as the team’s search for a new
coach and general manager
enters its fourth week.
York fired first-year coach
Chip Kelly and longtime general manager Trent Baalke on
Jan. 1 after the team matched
the worst record in franchise
history with a 2-14 mark.
“We have to make sure that
we get the right person,” York
said Tuesday at an event on the
intersection of sport and social
change at San Jose State.
York has interviewed six
coaching candidates with
Atlanta
offensive
coordinator Kyle Shanahan the only
remaining candidate. The
Niners will meet again with
Shanahan this week but can’t
sign him to a contract until after
the Falcons play in the Super
Bowl on Feb. 5 against New
England.
There have also been nine
interviews with potential general managers with Minnesota
assistant GM George Paton and
Arizona vice president of player
personnel Terry McDonough
expected to get second interviews this week as well.
The five other NFL coach
openings have already been
filled, including three candidates who interviewed with San
Francisco. Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay
got hired by the Los Angeles
Rams, Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott got the
job in Buffalo and Bills interim
coach Anthony Lynn took over
the Chargers.
Vance Joseph was hired in
Denver before he could interview with San Francisco.
Indianapolis is the only other
team with a general manager
opening.
“The message is we need
to re-establish a championship
culture and we’re not going
to do that by just filling a job
quickly, we need to get the
right people,” York said. “We
need to be patient, we need to
be willing to wait, and when we
get the right people we’ll start
to put everything in place.”
They hope that Shanahan
will be that person after overseeing an offense that helped
the Falcons make the Super
Bowl.
He is the son of two-time
Super Bowl winning head
coach Mike Shanahan, who also
won a title as offensive coordinator in San Francisco in 1994.
Kyle Shanahan’s stock as
a candidate has climbed as his
Atlanta offense has flourished.
Atlanta led the NFL in scoring,
averaging 33.8 points per game,
and quarterback Matt Ryan
was picked as a first-team AP
All-Pro.
Shanahan got his first NFL
job as an offensive quality control coach in Tampa Bay in 2004.
He also served as an offensive
coordinator in Houston, Washington and Cleveland before
arriving in Atlanta last season.
York said he was open to
hiring either the coach or general manager first. He said the
primary goal in the search is
finding a coach and general
manager who can work well
together.

Arkansas
rallies from
15-point
deficit, stuns
Vandy 71-70
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)
— Daryl Macon is really good
at knocking down free throws.
Until Tuesday night, the
Arkansas junior never had been
at the line with a chance to win
a game.
A little nervous, he hit the
first one. Then Macon added
two more with 1.6 seconds
left, finishing off a stunning
rally from a 15-point deficit as
Arkansas beat Vanderbilt 71-70
Tuesday night for the Razorbacks’ fourth straight win.
“The only thing that was
going through my mind was,
‘Don’t miss. Make all three,’”
Macon said. “And that’s why
I ... practice free throws every
day, and my time came.”
Macon is an 88 percent free
throw shooter, fourth-best in
the Southeastern Conference,
and he hit all 14 in a win against
Texas earlier this season. That’s
why Arkansas coach Mike
Anderson felt confident.
“I’ve got the right guy up
there,” Anderson said.
Nolan Cressler’s 3-pointer
from about 35 feet hit harmlessly off the rim as time
expired. Vanderbilt (9-11, 3-5)
lost for the fifth time in six
games.
“Obviously, this game
hurts,” Vanderbilt coach Bryce
Drew said. “Great position to
win this game for 37 minutes.”
Vanderbilt led 58-43 with
6:02 left after finishing a 20-3
run with 15 straight points,
taking advantage of the Razorbacks going without a point for
over 7 minutes, 24 seconds.
But the Razorbacks (16-4,
5-3) already had won twice on
the road in the Southeastern
Conference this month after
trailing by 12 or more points,
and they simply ran their way
back into their fourth straight
victory over Vanderbilt scoring
the last seven points over the
final 49 seconds.
The Razorbacks turned
in yet another big comeback
win on the road, like they did
in winning at Tennessee and
Texas A&M earlier this month.
They got within 70-68 on backto-back layups by Hannahs, the
second with 19.9 seconds left to
set up the furious finish.
They used their defense to
force the final turnover. Jaylen
Barford stole it off a pass from
Vanderbilt center Luke Kornet.
Hannahs missed a 3-pointer,
but Macon was fouled. He hit
all three and finished 7 of 7 at
the line with 12 points.
“Credit them for making
that two minutes their best two
of the game,” Drew said.
Dusty Hannahs III pace d
Arkansas with 17 points off the
bench and led five Razorbacks
in double figures.
Barford had 15 points,
Anton Beard added 11 and
Moses Kingsley had 10 for
Arkansas.
Riley LaChance led Vanderbilt with 16 points. Jeff Roberson had 14 points and 11
rebounds, and Joe Toye scored
a career-high 13 off the bench.
Vanderbilt had been in control starting with Toye scoring
on a 3-point play to put Vandy
up 43-40. Macon hit a 3, then
Payton Willis, a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, hit a free
throw and a jumper as the
Commodores went on a 20-3
run. Toye scored six more in
the run, and LaChance capped
the spurt with four straight free
throws for a 58-43 lead with
6:02 left.
BIG PICTURE
Arkansas: The Razorbacks
now have rallied from 12 or
more down in their three SEC
road wins. They now have
beaten Vanderbilt in seven of
the last nine games. They also
improved to 5-1 on the SEC
road over their last six games,
giving Anderson 17 road games
in league play in his tenure.
Vanderbilt: The Commodores missed a chance to build
some momentum at Memorial Gym coming off their big
upset at then-No. 19 Florida. It
didn’t help that leading scorer
Matthew Fisher-Davis fouled
out with 3:33 left having scored
only seven points.
TIP-INS
Arkansas dominated in the
paint with a 32-18 scoring edge.
They also outrebounded Vandy
34-31 and scored 16 points off
the Commodores’ 15 turnovers.
UP NEXT:
Arkansas: Continues a twogame road swing at Oklahoma
State on Saturday.
Vanderbilt: Hosts Iowa
State on Saturday.

Australian Open
MELBOURNE, Australia
(AP) — Serena Williams
reached her 10th consecutive
Grand Slam semifinal, and kept
her bid alive for a record 23rd
major title, with a 6-2, 6-3 win
over Johanna Konta at the Australian Open on Wednesday.
Her opponent in the semifinals, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni,
who beat fifth-seeded Karolina
Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, had a
much longer wait to get back to
this stage at a major — nearly
18 years.
It’s the second time in the last
two years that three women in
their 30s have reached the semifinals at a major: Venus Williams, 36, Serena Williams, 35,
and Lucic-Baroni, 34. Serena
also reached the semifinals at
the 2015 U.S. Open, alongside
30-somethings Flavia Pennetta
and Roberta Vinci.
“Thirties is the new 10,” Williams said after her match. “No
matter what happens, someone
34 or older will be in the final.”
It’s also the first time since
2002 that three American
women have reached the semifinals at the same Grand Slam.
Venus Williams plays American CoCo Vandeweghe in the
other semifinal on Thursday.
In the men’s quarterfinals,
Rafael Nadal will try to reach
his first major semifinal since
the 2014 French Open when he
plays third-seeded Milos Raonic
later Wednesday. Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin were
playing for the other semifinal
spot.
The second-seeded Serena
Williams was tested by Konta in
the second set when the British
player broke her to go up 2-1.
But Williams broke back at
love to level the score at 3-all
and saved another break point
in her next service game before
closing out the match.
Williams finished with 10
aces, but only connected on
45 percent of her first serves
overall.
“The main focus is actually
my serve even though I missed
a lot today,” she said. “I got a
little frustrated, but then I just
told myself, ‘Serena, stop complaining. Don’t be Baby Rena
out here.’”

Lucic-Baroni advanced to
the last four at a major for the
first time since her run to the
Wimbledon semifinals in 1999
at the age of 17.
The last time she made it
this far, Lucic-Baroni also had
to face a woman in the semifinals with 22 majors — Steffi
Graf. Graf won that match, but
fell short in her bid to win her
23rd major title against Lindsay
Davenport. The 79th-ranked
Lucic-Baroni is surprised she
is getting another chance at this
stage of her career.
She and Pliskova combined
for 14 service breaks in an upand-down match before the
Croatian left the court midway
through the third set for treatment on her heavily taped left
leg. When she returned, she
won eight straight points to
hold and get the final break of
the match and then put a rosary
around her neck to serve the
match out.
“I know this means a lot to
every player to reach the semifinals, but to me, this is just
overwhelming,” she said, in
tears, after the match. “This has
truly made my life and everything bad that happened, it has
made it OK.”
Lucic-Baroni was once considered a prodigy with as much
promise as the Williams sisters.
She won the first tournament
she entered as a 15 year old in
1997 and several months later
captured the 1998 Australian
Open doubles title with Martina Hingis.
After her run to the Wimbledon semifinals the following
year, however, Lucic-Baroni’s
career was sidetracked by personal issues and financial problems. She was largely out of the
sport for several years before
launching a comeback in the
late 2000s.

for 5th straight victory
TORONTO (AP) — Down
a trio of stars on Tuesday night,
many NBA teams would struggle
to get the job done.
Not the San Antonio Spurs.
Without Kawhi Leonard,
Tony Parker and Pau Gasol, the
Spurs beat the Toronto Raptors
108-106 for their fifth straight
victory.
“One thing about being here is
it’s more about the system,” said
LaMarcus Aldridge. “They’ve
been good over the years of plugging guys into the system. . We
try to have players here who we
can plug in and get the job done.”
Aldridge led the Spurs with 21
points, while Patty Mills added
18 and fellow reserve Davis Bertans chipped in with 12.
The Spurs improved to 36-9,
their third-best record through
45 games, behind only the 38-7
records of the 2010-11 and
2015-16 squads. On top of that,
they improved to 20-4 on the
road, the eighth team in NBA
history to win 20 of their first 24
games, according to NBA Stats.
“There’s a couple times we’ve
had some guys out and in the past
we’ve always had a next-manup mentality and guys always
performed and got it done,” said
Danny Green. “I think we’re just
now getting that chemistry, guys
are getting confident and starting
to pick up that slack.”
In a back-and-forth fourth
quarter that saw eight lead
changes — after just two in the
preceding 36 minutes — the

NOTICE OF INTENT
AMERICAN SAMOA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
NOTICE OF PROPOSED SCHOOL MAINTENANCE WORK IN A
FLOODPLAIN FOR INSULAR ABC’s SCHOOL INITIATIVE, AMERICAN SAMOA
Pursuant to the Office of Insular Affairs and the American Samoa Governor’s Insular ABC’s Initiative, the American Samoa
Department of Public Works (DPW) proposes repair and maintenance projects to improve the condition of public schools.
The general scopes of work involve repair or replacement of failing or missing components of existing buildings, and repair,
replacement, or improvements to school grounds and associated infrastructure (including ground disturbing activities). The
proposed projects would be confined to existing school property, and would not increase the capacity of the schools or
significantly alter the character or use of the schools.
A number of schools are located in federally designated floodplains which would require compliance with Executive Order
11988, Floodplain Management. The affected schools include:
Tutuila: Afonotele Elementary School, Alataua II Elementary School, Aua Elementary School, Faga’itua High
School, Lauli’i Elementary School, Le’atele Elementary School, Masefau Elementary School, Matafao
Elementary School, Matatula Elementary School, Mt. Alava Elementary School, Olomoana Elementary
School, Samoana High School, and Tafuna High School.
Aunu’u: A.P. Lutali Elementary School.
Manu’a: Faleasao Elementary School, and Olosega Elementary School.
DPW is soliciting public comment on the proposed projects through issuance of this public notice. Comments received may
aid in the identification of potential impacts and the evaluation of alternatives that could avoid, minimize or mitigate these
impacts. Individuals requesting additional information or submitting comments on these projects should contact DPW
Director Voigt or ABCs Program Manager Mr. Chin at (684) 699-9168. Written comments regarding this project must be
received at the below address within 15 days (Feb 8, 2017) of publication of this notice to be considered in this evaluation
and decision process.

floating jump shot from rookie
Dejounte Murray with 1:29 to
play.
Terrence Ross shot an airball
on a 3-pointer on the Raptors’
next possession, and after four
consecutive scoreless possessions
between the teams, Aldridge had
a chance to establish a four-point
lead with 11.3 seconds left on a
pair of free throws, but he missed
his second shot.
Norman Powell cut the lead
to one with a dunk with 6.2
seconds remaining, and after
Aldridge split another pair of free
throws with 5.1 seconds to go,
Powell missed a 3-pointer as time
expired.
“Down the stretch, very honestly, it just went away,” coach
Gregg Popovich said. “We didn’t
do anything special to deserve it
other than playing hard just like
they did, so we’re thrilled with
the win.”
The mood around the Raptors’ locker room was somewhat
less jubilant after they lost four
in a row for the first time since
March 4-10, 2015. With Eastern
Conference All-Star starter
DeMar DeRozan sidelined with a
sprained ankle, Kyle Lowry had
30 points and Ross added 21 off
the bench.
After falling behind by as
many as 13 points, Toronto didn’t
take its first lead of the game until
1:19 to go in the third quarter, and
ultimately fell just short in the
see-saw fourth.
“I was really proud of the
way they played,” coach Dwane
Casey said. “It comes back to
the will thing. It’s not the 3-point
shots or the fancy plays, it’s
the fundamentals: box out, free
throws, layups tonight in the
second half.”
Despite registering his fifth
30-point game of the season, and
putting in a game-high 41:45 of
court time, ultimately Lowry
chose to place the blame on himself for his team’s current woes.
“I’m just going out there, do
whatever my job is, and right
now it’s to go out there and try
and win games, and unfortunately
I’m not doing a good job of that
right now,” he said. “Got to figure
it out, got it figure it out no matter
what.”
TIP-INS
Spurs: Leonard (left hand) and
F Jonathon Simmons (right wrist)
sat out. ... Green tied his season
high with four blocked shots. He
had four against Boston on Nov.
25. ... San Antonio scored 100 or
more points for the 22nd consecutive game.
Raptors: DeRozan (right
ankle) was inactive for the game.
Following the sprain he suffered
in Sunday’s loss to Phoenix, the
Raptors said that he will also miss
Wednesday’s game in Memphis
before they re-evaluate the injury.
... F Jared Sullinger made his first
start since April 13, 2016, when
he was still with Boston. ... After
missing the last six games with a
sore left knee, Patterson returned
to action on Tuesday.

or you lose and then what happens? You get to go to dinner,
which is sometimes the best part
of the evening, with a nice glass
(of wine).” — Popovich, on the
ups and downs of the game of
basketball.
MOVING ON UP
With his 1,126th win Tuesday
night, Popovich is now one from
tying Jerry Sloan for most career
wins with one NBA franchise.
Casey had described Popovich
as the best coach in all of sports
earlier in the day, but before
the game, Popovich politely
disagreed.
“That’s very flattering but
obviously untrue,” he said. “I’ve
been around a long time and
we’ve won some games, and if
you’ve forgotten, I got to coach
Tim Duncan. That made me look
pretty good.”

Tomlin not alarmed
as Roethlisberger
ponders future
PITTSBURGH (AP) — As a
general philosophy, Pittsburgh
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin
treats each individual season as
its own unique entity, with no
direct through line from one to
the next.
Considering his quarterback’s
current state of mind, probably a
good idea.
While Tomlin believes the
Steelers have a “championship
caliber” team a couple days
removed from an ugly blowout
loss to New England in the AFC
title game, his franchise’s most
important player isn’t guaranteeing a return in 2017. Roethlisberger said during his weekly
appearance on 93.7 The Fan that
he needs time to reflect before
coming back for a 14th season.
“I’m going to take this offseason to evaluate, to consider
all options, to consider health
and family and things like that
and just kind of take some time
away to evaluate next season, if
there’s going to be a next season,
all those things,” Roethlisberger
said. Roethlisberger will turn
35 in March and is under contract through 2020. Knee injuries
have forced him to miss time
in each of the last two seasons
and while Pittsburgh ripped off
nine straight wins on its way
to the AFC North title and its
first appearance in the NFL’s
final four in six years, Roethlisberger wasn’t terribly sharp.
He threw 10 interceptions over
Pittsburgh’s final seven games,
though the two-time Super Bowl
winner didn’t receive much help
on Sunday against the Patriots, as
dropped passes, a groin injury to
running back Le’Veon Bell and
occasionally questionable playcalling — not to mention Tom
Brady at the peak of his powers
— played significant factors in
the worst postseason loss of his
career.
While Roethlisberger cautioned he’s “not by any means
saying he’s not coming back,”
the father of three considered
it “prudent” to take a step back
before deciding if he has the
energy to make another push.
That’s fine by Tomlin, who
wasn’t alarmed by Roethlisberger’s admission mostly because
they’ve had similar discussions
in the past.
“That’s football,” Tomlin
said. “Obviously I’m hopeful
that he returns and the potential
of his return or not returning will
weigh heavily on our planning.
That’s life. He’s the most significant component of what it is
that we do. We’ll plan and react
accordingly.”
Roethlisberger is one of three
Steelers remaining from the team
that beat Seattle in the Super
Bowl 11 years ago. The exodus
includes tight end and Roethlisberger’s longtime friend Heath
Miller, who retired last February
at age 33.
It seems unlikely Roethlisberger — who has three seasons
left on the five-year, $100 million
deal he signed in March 2015 —
would walk away considering
the Steelers (13-6) figure to be in
the mix again next season. Wide
receiver Antonio Brown is still
under contract, Bell will become
a free agent but is expected to
stick around and Martavis Bryant
will be eligible for reinstatement
after missing all of 2016 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse
policy. The offensive line that
allowed Roethlisberger to be
sacked just 17 times in 14 games
will remain intact.
There’s plenty to be optimistic about. And the odds(Continued on page B8)

Crews hard at
work preparing
stadium for
Super Bowl
HOUSTON (AP) — A crew
of four men worked on the
painstaking process of painting
the New England Patriots logo
on one end zone on Tuesday
afternoon at NRG Stadium for
the Super Bowl.
The group provided a small
glimpse into the hundreds of
hours of preparation that will
go into getting the home of the
Houston Texans ready for the
Patriots to meet the Atlanta Falcons in the Feb. 5 game.
Exactly how much time and
how many workers it takes to
get things in tip-top shape for
such an event is impossible to
estimate.
“It’s more than I can even
count,” NFL director of events
Eric Finkelstein said. “It’s a
very long process. The amount
of prep and time it takes to get
the Super Bowl ready in general
is something that takes years.
It’s not something that happens
overnight.”
Finkelstein said there aren’t
any special challenges to preparing the stadium this season
and the location of NRG actually made things a bit easier.
“Every year is going to be
different and you’re going to
have different challenges and
different opportunities that
you’re dealing with,” he said.
“Here the space is very flexible. It gives us an opportunity
to do a lot of different things.
There’s a lot of room here, a lot
of parking, lots of areas to build
things that you don’t necessarily have in other markets. So
it gives us a great opportunity
to put together a great Super
Bowl.”
Of the countless tasks that
must be handled before kickoff,
perhaps none is more important
than getting the field into perfect condition.
The game will be played on
the artificial turf that the Texans
played on all season. The only
pieces that have been replaced
are the two end zones and the
section where the 50-yard line
is.
Those changes were made
so the NFL could replace the
Texans logos with those of the
Falcons, Patriots and the Super
Bowl.
It’s not simply about things
looking nice — getting everything on the field just right is a
major undertaking.
“It’s got an in-field system
in it which is sand and rubber,”
NFL field director Ed Mangan
said.
“Making sure that those two
are coordinated in the proper
amounts, the proper softness,
working with concussion statistics and getting the field ... to

sound at the right numbers. Low
numbers obviously, so that if
you fall on it and hit your head
things rebound.
“Those are the perfect numbers that we’re looking for.
Making sure the seams are
right, no trip hazards and of
course making sure the artwork
looks good.”
Mangan, who is working
his 27th Super Bowl, is known
as a perfectionist and personally inspects every step of the
field preparations to make sure
they’re up to his high standards.
“He definitely takes extra
special care,” Finkelstein said.
“This is the biggest game of
the year, so we need the field to
be perfect in every way shape
and form to make sure that it
contributes to a tremendous
matchup.”
Mangan is not only tasked
with preparing the playing surface for the game, but also must
get the practice fields at Rice
University and the University
of Houston ready for the teams
to practice on during the week
leading up to the Super Bowl.
Finkelstein said that preparations are on schedule, but that
they’ll still be putting on the
final touches right up to game
day.
Mangan aims to have the
first coat on everything by this
weekend, but said that his crew
will be finishing little things as
late as the day before the game.
The NFL won’t make a final
determination if the retractable
roof of the stadium will be open
or closed for the game until a
day before, so the crew has been
alternating whether it’s open or
closed daily.
It was closed on Tuesday
afternoon as temperatures in
Houston soared into the low
80s. But it’s unlikely that it will
be closed on game day.
“If the weather cooperates
with us — which we hope it
does — the roof will be open,”
Finkelstein said.
➧ Tomlin not alarmed…
Continued from page B7
makers don’t seem concerned
about Roethlisberger’s intentions, making the Steelers the
early second choice (along with
Green Bay) to reach next year’s
Super Bowl in Minneapolis.
Some other takeaways as
Tomlin put the finishing touches
on a successful if not triumphant
year.
BATTERED BELL: Tomlin
said Bell had been dealing with
the groin injury that limited him
to just six carries against the
Patriots for some time but that
the All-Pro had found a way
to manage it without missing
practice. Tomlin said he didn’t
feel the problem was significant
enough to put Bell on the NFLmandated injury report, pointing
out the entire team could be
placed on the report due to various bumps and bruises associated with playing four-plus
months.
BROWN
NEEDS
TO
DELIVER: Tomlin downplayed
the notion that Brown needs to
become a more mature player
even though Tomlin publicly
chastised Brown’s decision to
livestream portions of the locker
room celebration following a
divisional round victory over
Kansas City. “He’s a dynamic
player (and) there are responsibilities that come with being a
dynamic player,” said Tomlin,
who added outlining the responsibilities is “normal operating
business” for all players.
SEE YOU IN 2017?: Linebacker James Harrison will
become a free agent in March
and turns 39 in May but has
already publicly talked about
making another run.
SECOND
GUESSING:
Tomlin became the eighth coach
to win 100 games in his first 10
seasons, remarkable in most
places, but maybe not in Pittsburgh. It’s a standard Tomlin
embraces. “My goal was to be
world champs and we weren’t
that,” Tomlin said. “You can
describe that in whatever way
you choose to. In that vein I’ve
only been successful one time in
10 years and I’m OK with that.”

Y NOT? By Timothy E. Parker

January 25,
2017
Happy Birthday: Weigh each move you make carefully and consider how much time and effort it will take
to carry out. Making wise choices will help you avoid being a jack-of-all trades and master of none. Stay
focused and make a point to focus on what matters most to you. A steady pace of progress should be your
priority. Your numbers are 5, 13, 22, 25, 34, 37, 44.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Be careful and don’t make assumptions. Wait until you are given a true picture
of what’s actually happening. Taking on too much under false pretenses will be costly in the end. Gauge your
time and use your talents wisely. ✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don’t settle for substitutes. Speak your mind and push until you get your way.
Your stubbornness will pay off if you offer incentives to those standing in your way. A kind gesture will go a
long way. Romance is encouraged. ✸✸✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your thirst for knowledge will help to balance out your financial goals. Take a
course that will enable you to apply for positions that have been out of reach in the past. Refuse to let anyone
lower your self-esteem. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Discuss your plans and make arrangements that include someone you enjoy
spending time with. Business and personal trips will spark an interest in making subtle lifestyle changes. Try
to spend more time doing the things you enjoy doing most. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You’ll have added discipline that will help you gather information and expand your
interests. Take care of any responsibilities you’ve been given and move on to the things you enjoy doing most.
Protect against minor injury or illness. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Getting together with like-minded people or collaborating to come up with
something special is featured. You’ll be on target when it comes to finding new ways to use tried-and-true
methods. A partnership looks promising and so does romance. ✸✸✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Pace yourself. Before you jump into something, make sure it won’t cause friction at home or with someone you love. Aim to finish what you start and to take care of your responsibilities
before you move on to more enjoyable pastimes. ✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your intuition and ability to tap into what’s going on around you will make
it easy to make wise choices. Make personal improvements and use what you have or where you live as a
springboard for new beginnings. ✸✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Get together with old friends or colleagues. The information you receive
will encourage you to change how you live and what you do for work. Plot a course and bring about the
changes necessary to reach your goals. ✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Let past experiences guide you. Someone will try to limit or interfere with
your plans. Don’t back down when the only thing that will help you gain respect is the truth. Make love and
romance a priority. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You have the right idea, but will need to harness your talents and use them
wisely to maximize your chances of advancement. Keep an open mind when discussing secrets or if you
choose to get involved in other people’s business. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Size up a situation that is bothering you or a cause you believe needs help
and do your best to make a difference. Don’t worry about the stubbornness of others. Do your thing and you
will break through any barriers you face. ✸✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are astute, goal-oriented and insightful. You are innovative and trendy.
Dear Abby
by Abigail Van Buren
WIFE WONDERS IF COUNSELING WILL HELP HUSBAND MATURE
DEAR ABBY: I’m having a hard time deciding if I should forgive my husband or tell him enough is
enough. In the year since our wedding, he became infatuated with one of my bridesmaids to the point
of telling her -- and me -- that he loved her. He also flirted with women online, lied to my face about
it, and asked for and received nude pictures from a “friend” and an ex.
We have been in counseling for about a month now, but we’re moving soon, and I’m not sure
I want to move with him, even though he now says he wants to fix things. We have a small child
together, which affects my decision. What should I do? -- NOT SURE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
DEAR NOT SURE: It appears that the man you married was not mature enough to make that commitment. That the two of you are now in counseling and he wants to make things work is hopeful.
However, considering what has been going on for the past year, I can understand your serious doubts.
Because you already have a counselor helping you to work on your marriage, I think you should take
your question to -- and your cues from -- the person with whom you are working.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
DEAR ABBY: I am going to be a great-grandmother soon, and I’m very excited about it. I didn’t
think I would live to experience this great joy. My beautiful granddaughter is not married to the baby’s
father, but is a mature and loving person.
Although her immediate family is supportive, the extended family is not and refuses to acknowledge it. My sisters will call me and talk about anything and everything except my granddaughter and
the baby that is coming. I don’t know what to make of their conduct. I feel like hanging up on them,
or telling them off and being done with them.
They are never going to experience being great-grandmothers themselves. Could they be jealous
or angry that this happened? Please tell me how to handle it. Their health isn’t good, so if I cut them
off, it could be forever. -- PERPLEXED IN PENNSYLVANIA
DEAR PERPLEXED: Your sisters could be jealous or angry, as you suspect. They could also be
judgmental and trying to “punish” your granddaughter for being pregnant and unwed by ignoring her.
I don’t blame you for feeling angry, and possibly hurt, for the way they are behaving. You’re entitled. But the question you must answer for yourself is, would you be better off with or without those
“sweethearts” in your life? Only you can answer that one.

DEAR ABBY: I have been dating my boyfriend for nine months, and for the first time, at 28, I can
say I know what love is. Marriage is in the future, which brings me to my question. How and when do
I tell him I was adopted? -- EAST COAST GIRL
DEAR EAST COAST GIRL: Frankly, I’m surprised this hasn’t already been discussed as part
of your getting to know each other. You are acting like having been adopted is some kind of guilty
secret, and it’s not. Tell your boyfriend in a quiet environment in which you can discuss it, preferably
when you’re having dinner and when you both feel relaxed and comfortable, so you can answer any
questions he may ask you.
