Works by women artists
in Florence
O
ver the past fifty years, research regarding
women artists has become more prevalent.
Nonetheless, the lack of accurate,
detailed information and documentation
regarding their lives and works has greatly hindered
the advancement of public knowledge. The chapters in
this book spotlight women artists whose works are on
public view in Florence. The inventory that follows was
originally intended to simply provide a list of viewable
and hidden works by women; its size would attest to
the volume of treasures. However, as each artist’s story
began to deeply intrigue us, Linda Falcone and I added
what details we could in the hope that readers would
also enjoy learning about these women’s lives and work.

Unfortunately, in many cases, we could not glean even
the most basic information about some of the lesserknown artists. Although many may have multiple
works in Florence’s galleries, for us, they truly remain
‘invisible women.’ With our sincere hope that these
artists and their works receive recognition, we invite
readers—scholars, students and art lovers alike—to

loro produzione possano ricevere presto
il meritato riconoscimento, invitiamo

Adèle d’Affry, Duchess of Colonna di Castiglione
(Fribourg, Switzerland, 1837–Castellamare, Naples, 1879)
A member of the Swiss nobility, she was one of the foremost sculptors
in Paris during her time. A painter as well as a sculptor, she studied
in both Switzerland and Rome. In Rome, she met and married Don
Carlo Colonna (Duke of Castiglione), intending to end her artistic
career once the couple wed. The duke died of typhoid fever a few
months after their marriage, and Adèle, who wished her art to be
judged on the par with that of her male counterparts, continued to
work under the masculine pseudonym of ‘Marcello’.
Membro della nobiltà svizzera, è stata una delle più note scultrici nella
Parigi del suo tempo. Dedita alla pittura oltre che alla scultura, studiò
in Svizzera e a Roma, dove incontrò e sposò Don Carlo Colonna
(Duca di Castiglione), programmando di terminare la sua carriera
artistica una volta unitasi in matrimonio. Il duca morì di febbre
tifoidea pochi mesi dopo le nozze e Adèle, desiderando che la sua arte
venisse considerata al pari di quella dei suoi colleghi uomini, continuò
a lavorare sotto lo pseudonimo maschile di ‘Marcello’.

Evangelina Gemma Alciati
(Torino, 1883–1959)

Amelia Ambron
(XIX–XX century)
Born to a Jewish Italian family, Roman portraitist Amelia Almagià
Ambron was trained by Antonio Mancini, whose painting is deeply
linked to Verismo. She was a leading player in Alexandria’s art scene in
the 1940s and 1950s, and it was in the Ambrons’ Egyptian villa that
British novelist Lawrence Durrell wrote The Alessandria Quartet. Her
daughter Gilda was also a portraitist and her son Emilio, a painter and
sculptor of some note, worked in Florence and Rome.
Nata da una famiglia italo-ebraica, la ritrattista romana Amelia
Almagià Ambron è stata allieva di Antonio Mancini, le cui tele
sono fortemente legate al Verismo. E’ stata una figura di spicco nel
panorama artistico di Alessandria tra gli anni ‘40 e ‘50 e fu proprio
nella villa di famiglia in Egitto che lo scrittore Lawrence Durrell creò
‘The Alessandria Quartet’. Anche sua figlia Gilda divenne ritrattista, e
il figlio Emilio, pittore e scultore di una certa fama, lavorò tra Firenze
e Roma.

Beatrice Ancillotti Goretti
(Florence, 1879–Pistoia, 1937)

Marina Battigelli
(Cairo, 1894–Florence, 1979)
One of Italy’s best-known illustrators of children’s books, Battigelli
received no formal artistic training. Her most famous book is The
Gospel told to a child by his mother (Il Vangelo narrato da un fanciullo da
sua madre), published in 1921. She signed her works in various ways,
often including ‘Firenze’ under her signature.
Una delle più note illustratrici di libri per bambini, la Battigelli non
ricevette alcuna educazione artistica formale. Il suo libro più famoso
è Il Vangelo narrato a un fanciullo da sua madre, pubblicato nel 1921.

Cecilia Beaux
(Philadelphia, 1855–New York, 1942)
Realist painter Cecilia Beaux was one of America’s top portrait artists
at the turn of the twentieth century. She was awarded the Carnegie
Institute’s Gold Medal in 1899 and earned herself membership at the
American National Academy in 1902. The first woman to be granted
a teaching position at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, she
worked in Pennsylvania, New York and Paris.
La pittrice realista Cecilia Beaux fu una delle migliori ritrattiste del
ventesimo secolo. Fu premiata con la Medaglia d’Oro del Carnegie
Institute nel 1899 e si guadagnò l’affiliazione all’American National
Academy nel 1902. Lavorò a Parigi, New York e in Pennsylvania, dove

Chiara Spinelli, Princess of Belmonte
(Naples, 1744–1823)
Pastel artist and daughter of the ninth Duke of Laurino, Spinelli was
married to Don Antonio Francesco Pignatelli, Prince of Belmonte
and Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
Pastellista, figlia del nono Duca di Laurino, la Spinelli sposò Don
Antonio Francesco Pignatelli, Principe di Belmonte e Principe del
Sacro Romano Impero.

Mary Casini Bellini

Mary Benwell
(Floruit, 1761–London, 1800 circa)
Trained by portraitist and pastel artist John Russel, she worked in
miniatures and oils although she was most practiced in pastels.
Benwell married an army officer, Code Edwards, whom she followed
to Gibraltar where he was stationed. Although she exhibited at the
Society of Artists and the Royal Academy for over 15 years, she never
became an official member.
Formatasi come ritrattista e pastellista con John Russel, lavorò a
miniature ed oli, pur essendo più esperta nell’uso del pastello. La
Benwell sposò un ufficiale militare, Code Edwards, che seguì a
Gibilterra, dove era di servizio. Pur esponendo per più di 15 anni alla
Società degli Artisti e alla Accademia Reale, non ne divenne mai un
membro ufficiale.

(Stockholm, 1944–)

Pasquarosa Marcelli Bertoletti
(Rome, 1896–Lucca, 1973)
At the beginning of her career, Pasquarosa worked as a model for such
artists as Felice Carena and Nino Bertoletti. The latter became her
husband in 1915. Famous for her colorful, anti-academic works, she
participated in several editions of Rome’s Seccessione Romana. She
nurtured deep friendships with several important personalities such
as metaphysical painter Giorgio de Chirico and Nobel Prize–winning
author Luigi Pirandello.
Agli inizi della sua carriera, Pasquarosa lavorò come modella per artisti
come Felice Carena e Nino Bertoletti. Quest’ultimo divenne suo
marito nel 1915. Famosa per le sue opere colorate e anti-accademiche,
partecipò a numerose edizioni della Successione Romana a Roma.
Nutrì diverse amicizie con importanti personalità come il pittore
metafisico Giorgio de Chirico e il vicitore del premio Nobel, Luigi
Pirandello.

Isabel Bishop
(Cincinnati, Ohio, 1902–Bronx, New York, 1988)
An American painter and graphic artist, she was inspired by
Renaissance and baroque art, and particularly by Rubens’ works.
Much of her artwork depicted ordinary working-class women in
New York’s Union Square area; she envisioned herself as a ‘painter’s
painter.’ Bishop received the Outstanding Achievement in the Arts
Award from President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and was the first woman
to hold an executive position at the National Institute of Arts and
Letters. She is often referred to as ‘America’s best woman painter.’
Pittrice americana e grafica, si ispirò al Rinascimento e al Barocco, in
modo particolare ai lavori di Rubens. Molte delle sue opere ritraggono
la vita quotidiana delle donne della classe operaia della Union Square
Area di New York; si definiva una ‘pittrice di pittrici’. La Bishop

Antonietta Brandeis
(Mistowitz, Austria, 1849–Venice, 1910)
She studied in Prague before going to Venice to study at the
Accademia. Brandeis painted popular landmarks in Venice and
her paintings were often used on mementos for the city’s tourists.
Although she sojourned in Rome and Florence to develop her skills
as a landscape artist, her scenes of Venice continue to be her most
highly regarded works today.
Studiò a Praga prima di giungere a Venezia dove frequentò
l’Accademia. La Brandeis creò opere celeberrime a Venezia e queste
immagini furono spesso riprodotte nei memorabilia della città per i
turisti. Anche se soggiornò a Roma e Firenze per ampliare le sue doti
di paesaggista, le sue scene veneziane continuano a essere oggi i suoi
successi più ragguardevoli.

Sofia Cacherano Bricherasio
Anna Bonetti
(Torino, 1867–Mirandolo Terme, 1950)
She was primarily a landscape artist who adopted an Expressionist
technique. Bricherasio became one of the few painters from
Piedmont who were selected to participate in the first edition of
Venice’s Biennale in 1895. As the last descendent of the Cacherano
di Bricherasio family, she was a countess by birth who became well
known for her philanthropy.
Rosa Bonheur
E’ stata essenzialmente una paesaggista che utilizzava la tecnica
espressionista. La Bricherasio fu una delle poche pittrici piemontesi
selezionate per partecipare alla prima edizione della Biennale di
Venezia nel 1895. Contessa dalla nascita e ultima discendente della
famiglia Cacherano di Bricherasio, fu molto conosciuta per le sue
attività filantropiche.

The daughter of the famed French archeologist Desirè-Raoul
Rochette, Josèphine Calamatta was known for her portraiture, genre
paintings and religious imagery. She was trained by her husband, Luigi
Calamatta, an important Italian engraver who worked in Florence in
the late 1830s. After studying with decorative monumental painter
Hippolyte Flandrin, Calamatta debuted in the Salon de Paris in
1875. Deeply interested in Symbolism, the artist was also profoundly
influenced by neoclassic painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.

Daphne Maugham Casorati
(London, 1879–Torino, 1982)
Born to a family of diplomats, artists and writers, Daphne Maugham
was great-niece to William Beechey, a portraitist in the court of
Queen Victoria, and her uncle was the renowned writer William
Somerset Maugham. Known for her adaptation of naturalism, her
training in England and France deeply influenced her work’s luminous
style. Winner of numerous artistic awards, she participated in Venice’s
Biennale from 1928 to 1950.
Nata da una famiglia di diplomatici, artisti e scrittori, fu pronipote
di William Beechey, un ritrattista alla corte della Regina Vittoria
e suo zio fu il celeberrimo scrittore William Somerset Maugham.
Conosciuta per la sua personale versione del naturalismo, il luminoso
stile dei quadri di Daphne Maugham fu influenzato profondamente

Daughter of a Russian sculptress, she spent her childhood in Sorrento,
Italy. In the 1930s, she studied at Florence’s Accademia delle Belle
Arti. Years later, she married the academy’s director, painter Giovanni
Colacicchi. Her villa, on the outskirts of Florence, was once a nunnery
complex attached to the Medici Villa, La Petraia.

married famed sculptor and engraver Arturo Checchi in 1930; his

Montanelli Bassi Foundation.

Emma Ciardi
(Venice, 1875–1933)
She grew up in a family of painters; both her father Guglielmo and
brother Beppe were well-known Venetian artists. Her work is deeply
influenced by the Venetian tradition, capturing luminous scenes and
plein-air views. Though her art is considered reminiscent of Tiepolo
and Guardi, it straddles the trends championed by Impressionism and
post-Impressionism.

Maddalena Corvina
(Rome, 1607–1664)
Painter and engraver Maddalena Corvina enjoyed Medici patronage
like many of her female counterparts. Especially noted for portraiture
and still life, she was highly appreciated for her decorative paintings
and miniatures. Corvina apprenticed to her uncle, Flemish painter
Francesco da Castello, one of the most renowned miniaturists
working in Rome in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. She was
the teacher of painter Anna Angelica Allegrini, a Roman miniaturist.
Come molte delle sue omologhe femminili, Maddalena Corvina aderì
alla corte medicea in qualità di pittrice e incisore. Fu molto apprezzata
per i suoi disegni decorativi e le sue miniature e particolarmente
nota per i ritratti e le nature morte. La Corvina fu apprendista da
suo zio, il pittore fiammingo Francesco da Castello, uno dei più
rinomati miniaturisti che ha lavorato a Roma tra il sedicesimo e il
diciassettesimo secolo. Fece anche da maestra alla miniaturista romana

Helen de Beauvoir painted until she was 85 years old—six years
before her death. She was the sister of existential philosopher Simone
de Beauvoir. In Goxwiller, near Strasbourg, de Beauvoir was president
of a battered women’s center and her works were often related to
women’s issues and feminism.
Helen de Beauvoir dipinse fino all’età di 85 anni, sei anni prima della
sua morte. Era sorella della filosofa esistenzialista Simone de Beauvoir.
A Goxwiller, vicino Strasburgo, la de Beauvoir divenne presidente di

Sonia Delaunay
(Gradiesk, Ukraine, 1885–Paris, 1979)
A Russian painter and designer, née Sarah Stern, she adopted her
uncle’s surname, Terk, in 1890 after she was sent to live with him. With
her second husband, French painter Robert Delaunay, she founded
the Orphism art movement, a version of Cubism known for its strong
colors and geometric shapes. She was the first living female to have a
retrospective exhibition at the Louvre (1964). In 1975, Delaunay was
named an officer of the French Legion of Honor.
Pittrice e designer di origine russa, adottò il cognome dello zio, Terk,
nel 1890 dopo essere stata mandata a vivere con lui. Fu co-fondatrice
con Robert Delaunay, che sposò in seconde nozze, del Movimento
d’Arte Orfica, una versione del cubismo, nota per la forza dei colori
e delle forme geometriche. E’ stata la prima donna vivente a poter
vantare una propria retrospettiva al Louvre (1964). Nel 1975 la
Delaunay fu nominata Ufficiale della Legione d’Onore di Francia.

Leonor Fini

A painter and illustrator with a flair for fashion, she worked with
Italian Surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli and illustrated the works
of Edgar Allan Poe and Shakespeare. A friend of Picasso, Max Ernst
and Salvador Dalì, Fini made the most of Bohemian life in Paris
during the 1930s. She was disguised as a boy until the age of five
to prevent her father from finding her runaway mother, who had
fled from Argentina to Trieste in 1908. Best known for her powerful
depictions of the female form, Fini also designed costumes and theater
decorations.
Pittrice e illustratrice con talento per la moda, ha lavorato con la
designer surrealista italiana Elsa Schiaparelli e illustrato i lavori
di Edgar Allan Poe e Shakespeare. Amica di Picasso, Max Ernst e
Salvador Dalì, la Fini sfruttò al massimo la vita ‘bohemien’ della Parigi
anni ‘30. Si travestì da ragazzo fino all’età di cinque anni per impedire
che il padre rintracciasse lei e la madre fuggite dall’Argentina a
Trieste nel 1908. Molto conosciuta per le sue forti immagini di forme
femminili, la Fini disegnò anche costumi e scenografie teatrali.

Dominique Fury
(French 1953–)
French artist Dominique Fury was active in New York in the 1970s as
part of the Underground movement. Together with Loulou Picasso,
she is credited for having discovered the silkscreen technique. She
exhibits worldwide, experimenting with myriad creative techniques
using computer-based illustration, silkscreen painting and industrial
fabrics.

Gàbor graduated from the Hungarian College of Fine Arts in 1941.
Her works are in public collections throughout Europe, including the
Hungarian National Gallery, the Hungarian National Museum and
Berlin’s Nationalmuseum. She is known for her lyrical portraits and
extravagant style.

Fede Galizia
(Milan, 1578–1630)
While her historical paintings proved a banner to female adeptness
when it came to tackling complex themes, Galizia is best remembered
for her role in developing the still life genre. In 1602, at the age of 24,
she created Cup with plums, pears and a rose (ex Anholt Collection).
Though now lost, this painting became the first dated still life by
an Italian artist after Caravaggio’s Fruit basket (1596, Pinacoteca
Ambrosiana, Milan). Simple and austere, Galizia’s sophisticated,
uncluttered paintings often depict a single type of fruit, placed either
in a container or scattered around its base.

Trained in figure painting and still life, Gambogi (née Danielson)
studied at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School in Helsinki. At
22 she moved to Paris, before traveling to Italy. After her marriage
to Raffaello Gambogi, one of Fattori’s pupils, the couple settled in
Torre del Lago and became part of the circle that developed around
composer Giacomo Puccini. In 1899, she became the first Finnish
woman to exhibit at Venice’s Biennale.
La Danielson studiò disegno di figura e nature morte alla Scuola di
Disegno della Società d’Arte Finlandese ad Helsinki. A 22 anni si
spostò a Parigi, prima di giungere in Italia. Dopo il suo matrimonio

During this period, she worked with her twin brother, expressionist

poetry and prose, often commenting on her brother’s art in her writing.

One of the major figures of post-war Austrian art, painter and graphic
artist Maria Lassnig was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Vienna. She went on to represent Austria at the thirty-ninth Venice
Biennale in 1980 and was the first Austrian woman to win the Grand
Austrian State Prize in 1988. Lassing is known for her avant-garde
feminist art and she is credited for having coined the phrase ‘bodyawareness painting.’ She was the first female professor of painting at the
Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, a traditionally male-dominated
sector. A filmmaker as well as an artist, Lassnig produced Kantate in
1992. In the movie, she performs a 14-verse song, representative of her
life. The artist lives in Vienna, and several of her works can be found at
New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.
Una delle maggiori figure dell’arte austriaca del dopoguerra, Maria
Lassnig, pittrice e grafica, crebbe all’Accademia di Belle Arti a Vienna.
Fu invitata a rappresentare l’Austria alla trentanovesima Biennale di
Venezia nel 1980 e fu la prima donna austriaca a vincere il Gran
Premio di Stato Austriaco nel 1988. La Lassnig è nota per la sua
avanguardia femminista e a lei viene attribuito il termine ‘pittura della
consapevolezza del corpo’. E’ stata la prima donna docente di pittura
all’Accademia di Arti applicate di Vienna, un settore tradizionalmente
maschile. Come film-maker, la Lassnig ha prodotto Kantate nel 1992.

Her preferred media was pencil drawing, etchings and aquatints.
Lydis illustrated many books and is known for her subtle illustrations
of feminine beauty. She was the lover of Italian magical realist poet
Massimo Bontempelli, and 240 of their love letters, written in French,
are in the collection of the Getty Research Institute in California. She
was a good friend of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.
Le sue tecniche preferite furono il disegno a matita, l’acquaforte e
l’acquatinta. La Lydis illustrò diversi libri ed è conosciuta per le sue
illustrazioni leggere della bellezza femminile. Era l’amante di Massimo
Bontempelli, il poeta italiano il cui stile è conosciuto anche come

During World War I, the London National Savings Committee
adopted her work, The Peacemaker, to advertise a British war bond.

Giulia Nuti Marini
(Prato, 1800–1869)
Marini was one of Prato’s most noteworthy nineteenth-century
painters, together with Angiolina Guasti and Verdiana Bertini. She
was the wife of Antonio Marini, a grand ducal painter and restorer
who worked in both Prato and Florence. Giulia often collaborated
with her husband, adding botanically perfect floral details to his
works. Their paintings can be seen at Prato’s Palazzo Comunale.
La Nuti Marini fu una tra le più notevoli donne pittrici di Prato nel
diciannovesimo secolo, insieme a Angiolina Guasti e Verdiana Bertini.
Era la moglie di Antonio Marini, un eccellente pittore di corte e
restauratore che lavorò tra Prato e Firenze. Giulia spesso collaborò
con lui, impreziosendo le opere del marito con la perfezione dei suoi
dettagli floreali e botanici. Le loro opere sono esposte al Palazzo
Comunale di Prato.

Both a writer and painter, she was one of the main exponents of
the Roman school. Famous for her landscapes, she worked in Rome
between the two world wars.

Olga Carol Rama
(Turin, 1918–)
Rama often explores erotic themes in her paintings. In Fascist Italy,
she fought against the issue of censorship. In the 1950s, she became
a member of the Movimento d’Arte Concreta, the Italian branch of
an abstractionist movement that originally developed in Switzerland
in the 1930s.
La Rama spesso esplora nei suoi dipinti il tema dell’erotismo. Nel corso
del ventennio fascista lottò contro la censura. Negli anni ‘50 divenne
membro del ‘Movimento di Arte Concreta’, la corrente italiana del

Sophie Amalia Ribbing
(Adelöv, Småland, 1835–Kristiania, 1894)
An accomplished portraitist who was also fond of genre painting,
she studied in Stockholm, Dusseldorf and Brussels during the 1850s
and 1860s. She was a long-time resident of both London and Rome,
where she studied with fellow Swedish painter Agnes Börjeson, an
expert in historical genre painting.
Apprezzata ritrattista, la Ribbing si appassionò anche alla pittura di
maniera. Formatasi a Stoccolma, Dusseldorf e Brussels tra il 1850 e
il 1860, risiedette per lunghi periodi sia a Londra che a Roma, dove

Emma Gaggiotti Richards
(Rome, 1825–Velletri, 1912)
She was a historical painter and portrait artist, best known for
her portrait of Alexander von Humboldt, a German explorer and
naturalist. Born in Rome, Richards (née Gaggiotti) studied under
Nicola Consorti and Tommaso Minardi. Upon her marriage to Alfred
Bate Richards, she moved to England where her notable talent quickly
captured the attention of Queen Victoria, who, along with other royals
in France and Germany, commissioned her several portraits. Upon
her return to Italy in 1854, she worked in both Florence and Rome,
depicting religious and mythological themes as well as landscapes.
Fu ritrattista e pittrice di soggetti storici, ricordata soprattutto per
il suo ritratto di Alexander von Humboldt, un esploratore tedesco e
naturalista. Nata a Roma, la Gaggiotti-Richards studiò sotto la guida
di Nicola Consorti e Tommaso Minardi. Dopo il suo matrimonio con
Alfred Bate Richards, si trasferì in Inghilterra dove il suo notevole
talento richiamò rapidamente l’attenzione della Regina Vittoria che

A larger than life persona, Anna Salvatore’s talents as a painter,
sculptress and writer made her one of the most talked-about cultural
figures of her day. Dedicated primarily to neorealist painting, she
hobnobbed with futurist author Giuseppe Ungaretti, cinema master
Pier Paolo Pasolini and writer Alberto Moravia. She also played a
minor role in Federico Fellini’s La dolce vita and in 1966 published a
novel, Subliminal YOU.

Anna Sanesi

Sansei was director and professor of figurative arts at the Scuola d’Arte:
Leonardo da Vinci, in Prato. She is considered a primary exponent of
neonaturalism in Prato, which focuses on reviving the Renaissance
idea of depicting realistic objects in a natural environment.
Fu direttore e docente della Scuola d’Arte di Arti Figurative ‘Leonardo
da Vinci’ a Prato. E’ considerata una delle prime esponenti del neorealismo pratese il cui obiettivo era far rivivere l’idea rinascimentale di
ritrarre oggetti realistici in un ambiente naturale.

Rodolfo Siviero Museum) houses several of Siviero’s paintings and
murals.
Le creazioni di Imelde Siviero, artista fiorentina minore che
sperimentò un certo narrativismo figurativo, ritraggono soggetti
naturali, scene d’infanzia, sport e cultura locali. Suo fratello, Rodolfo
Siviero, conosciuto come ‘il James Bond italiano’, fu funzionario della
delegazione dell’Ufficio Affari Esteri addetta al recupero di opere
rubate dall’esercito nazista durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. La
sua casa di Firenze, ora divenuta museo, conserva numerosi ritratti e
murales della sorella Imelde.

Luisa Silei studied with Carlo Marko, a Hungarian painter, who
was active in Florence in the mid-nineteenth century. Her romantic
landscapes adopted a more modern naturalist style in her later works.

Adele Steiner

A minor Florentine artist who experimented with figurative narratism,
Imelde Siviero’s paintings spotlight natural scenes, infantile theater
and local sport and culture. Her brother, Rodolfo Siviero, known as
‘the Italian James Bond’ was employed by the Italian Foreign Office’s
delegation for recovering works that had been stolen by Nazi forces
during World War II. His home, now a Florence museum (Casa

Janina Kraupe-Swiderska
(Poland, 1921–)
Kraupe-Swiderska studied and later taught at the Academy of the
Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland. Her artistic expression involves music,
astrology and mysticism, and each of her works are influenced
by personal experiences. In various venues in Poland and abroad,
Swiderska’s art can be found at the Guggenheim Museum in New
York and the Albertina in Vienna, and she has participated in over
200 collective exhibitions worldwide.
La Kraupe-Swiderska ha studiato e, più tardi, insegnato all’Accademia
di Belle Arti a Cracovia, in Polonia. La sua espressività artistica è
legata alla musica, all’astronomia e al misticismo, e ogni sua creazione

Ada Van der Schalk
(Milan, 1883–Varese, 1957)
Born in Milan, Ada Van der Schalk studied painting in Bavaria,
France and Holland. She returned to Italy in 1908, finally settling
in Varese after living in both Milan and Como. She was featured
at Milan’s Permanente for the first national exhibition on Italian
twentieth-century painting. In addition to museums in Florence, Van
der Schalk’s works are in various museums throughout Italy, including
Milan’s Gallery of Modern Art and the Contemporary Art Gallery
in Varese.
Maria Tagliapietra
Nata a Milano, Ada Van der Schalk, studiò pittura in Baviera, Francia
e Olanda. Ritornò in Italia nel 1908, trovando sistemazione a Varese,
dopo aver vissuto a Milano e a Como. Presenziò alla Permanente
di Milano per la prima esposizione nazionale di pittura del XX
secolo. Oltre che a Firenze, le sue opere sono esposte in vari musei

Lucia Casalini Torelli
(Bologna, 1677–1762)
Lucia Casalini was known for her portraits. The wife of Felice Torelli,
a baroque painter who founded the Accademia Clementina in
Bologna, she was often called the ‘Bolognese Rosalba,’ with reference
to Rosalba Carriera. Her son Stefano Torelli, also an artist, painted
with Venetian master Giovanni Antonio Canaletto.
Lucia Casalini era conosciuta per i suoi ritratti. Moglie di Felice
Torelli, un artista barocco che fondò l’Accademia Clementina a
Bologna, fu spesso chiamata la ‘Rosalba Bolognese’, in riferimento

Therese van Duyl-Schwartze
(Amsterdam, 1851–1918)
A painter and printmaker, she is thought to be one of the best Dutch
portrait painters of her time. Her father, also a portrait painter, was
her first teacher—she began painting at the age of 10. Her sister
was sculptor Georgine Schwartze. After her father died, Therese van
Duyl went to Munich to study, traveling to France before returning
to Amsterdam. In 1906, she married Anton van Duyl, an editor. She
had a studio in Amsterdam, which became a meeting place for women
artists, who called themselves the ‘Amsterdam Joffers.’ The Therese
van Duyl-Schwartze Prize, instituted in 1920, is currently awarded to
artists who excel in portraiture.
Pittrice e stampatrice, è ritenuta una delle migliori ritrattiste olandesi
del suo tempo. Suo padre, anch’egli ritrattista, fu il suo primo
.insegnante - Therese iniziò a dipingere a soli dieci anni, Sua sorella
era la scultrice Georgine Schwartz. Dopo la morte del padre, Therese
Van Duyl andò a Monaco per studiare, attraversando la Francia prima

Dona Mariana Waldstein was the IX Marchesa of Santa Cruz.
She created copies and portraits in oils and was also a miniaturist.

Waldstein frequented the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and
was named honorary director in 1771. Her portrait by Francesco
Goya (circa 1792) hangs in Paris’s Louvre Museum.
Dona Mariana Waldestein fu la IX Marchesa di Santa Cruz. Creò
copie e ritratti in olio e fu anche miniaturista. La Waldestein frequentò
l’Accademia di San Fernando a Madrid e ne diventò direttore onorario
nel 1771. Il suo ritratto per mano di Francisco Goya (1792 circa) è
esposto al Louvre di Parigi.

Maria Antonia, l’ultima Elettrice di Sassonia, era dotata nella poesia
e nella musica. In Francia e in Italia venne considerata una pittrice
molto raffinata. Membro dell’Accademia di San Luca a Roma, fu
anche nota come mecenate: commissionò lavori all’artista Raphael
Mengs e al compositore Johann Adolf Hasse.
