MARCO DI GIUSEPPE / PORTFOLIO OPERE 2008/2014 I LOTTATORI 2013 I LOTTATORI 2013 Performance, video Video HD 6’40’’ col. In collaborazione con Fabrizio Sartori, Fua Florence University of Arts e Trial Version. In collaboration with Fabrizio Sartori, Fua Florence University of Arts and Trial Version. The Wrestlers is a project that intends to overturn a stereotype through employing the same elements that usually foster its existence. Inside the walls of an old bakery in the historic centre of Florence, two artists pose for a life-drawing class for a group of American students. The experience of these students in Italy represents the typical condition of the “wise traveller”, neither tourist nor local, who opts for a long stay rather a short one based merely on consumption, in a sort of modern Grand Tour. But where is the authenticity in a place where the past is sold as the present? Between latency and actuality, the imitation becomes the tool through which the stereotype becomes saturated, even surpasses itself, whilst the agents involved are simultaneously subjects and objects in the shared experience of a performance. The Wrestlers, Stills da video, 2013. 2012 Installation Neon sign 30 cm. x 300 cm. Ma cà non si futte mai? is a site-specific project conceived by the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm. In 1959, the Sicilian poet Salvatore Quasimodo won the Nobel Prize for literature. Accompanying him on his visit to Stockholm was a young Gianni Boncompagni, at the time working at the Italian Cultural Institute. Boncompagni later became famous in Italy as the director of numerous Italian variety shows and as a popular songwriter. His style contributed to the spread of a national sexuality in Italy through the use of stereotypes and vulgarities. Fifty years after his meeting with Quasimodo in Stockholm, Boncompagni recounted this anecdote: « I was the guide for Salvatore Quasimodo when he arrived to collect his Nobel Prize. I took him around Stockholm the best visiting museums, the most beautiful squares, and the most prestigious buildings. Our days were so boring that Quasimodo once looked at me and said: “Doesn’t anybody ever fuck here?”» This story, born from the curious encounter of these two odd and opposing characters, is synthesized in a neon sign made using the original wording of the poet. Leveraging the earnestness acquired over the years by the medium, the work asks the viewer in an institutional setting: direct fiction or poetic license? DèJà VU 2012 “There is a kind of Zeitgeist. We all read similar books, magazines and watch TV or go to the movies. So a person of reasonable intelligence could come up with similar ideas to someone else in another part of the world”. * http://www.edoardoaruta.com/ dèjà vu 2012 12 hours Performance, Installation Wood, nails, iron tubes, rope Environmental dimension Having been invited to the same exhibition, I asked the artist Edward Aruta if I could copy his work following the production process. His work, Home Sweet Home, consisted in the construction and immediate dismantling of a small building inside the monumental apartment, situated in Via Veneto in Rome, where the Nuda Proprietà, libertà fragile e società dell’effimero exhibition took place. I was mainly interested in working with a method unlike mine, studying the work of another artist in terms its of process and form. The performance, which lasted over ten hours, created a particular experience of alienation in the audience, a dèjà vu in which was difficult to recognize the authorship of the works. This video is constructed from the images captured during the day of the performance. It is organized in such a way that the shots of individual actions are synchronized, creating a visual dance that expresses the ideal of imitation. Like a mirror, this approach gives the film a pattern, the visual overlay grants consistency to the whole process. Dèjà vu, stills da video, 2012. COLLECTING PORTFOLIO 2011 COLLECTING PORTFOLIO 2011/... COLLECTING PORTFOLIO 2011/... Workshop How do you present your work? How do you create a portfolio effectively, one that gives a sense of the works through a careful use of documentation and graphics? Given the shortcomings of Italian universities with regards to an artistic education, this project proposes a series of meetings in which the artists confront their works and reflect on the representation of their practice. This type of consulting is intended primarily to expand the possibilities of the portfolio itself, acting as a common ground for the whole artistic class. This goes beyond its promotional nature, and alters its very function. This series of meetings granted an opportunity to create an archive where the carefully ordered documentation reflected my personal contribution. Altynay Raskaliyeva, Portfolio giornalistico, 2011. SOTTOSPIRITO 2010 Installation Case made in Plexiglass, thurible, incense 175x40x40 cm. The sacred theme of Se Dio vuole, una mostra sorprendentemente spirituale exhibition allowed me to recall my personal experience from childhood when I was an altar boy. My fascination with a particular object from this period, the incense burner, is crystallized into a sculpted image. The incense coals are lit in an incense burner itself inside a case, the smoke saturates the space as it consumes all the oxygen, partially denying vision. Putting a memory in a display case lets one save it as an image. This representation embodies the artist’s continuous attempt to match the idea with the actual form, the theory with the practice. CATALYTIC EXHIBITION 2009/2010 Event In collaboration with Rosario Sorbello My first solo exhibition becomes an excuse to investigate the relationship between works their audiences. The project itself consists entirely of a rich Sicilian buffet without any work presented. It’s an ironic statement on the moment of display, making clear the conflict that generally arises between the public at an opening and the works installed that seem to be simply meaningless scenery. The Catalytic Exhibition emphasized this aspect without censuring it, postponing the presentation of the works until after the vernissage. In the room next to the buffet, two secretaries were setting the schedule for the following days in order to present my work in individual appointments. Sitting around a table and accompanied by the curator, the guests could consult my portfolio and simply chat in a relaxed atmosphere while freely expressing their opinions. This “exhibition” continued for over a year, and has resulted in numerous meetings that have let me to produce customized catalogues, and when it comes to my personal experience, to deeply reflect on my practice. This project is indebted to the artist Francesco Vezzoli, who was asked to pose as a model for an artistic anatomy lesson. The pose of the model recalls the early sculpture of L’Age du bronze by Auguste Rodin. The work, which was displayed for the first time in 1877 in Bruxelles, was criticised by the judges of the exhibition. They considered that the pose strayed too far from the real pose of the model, an infringement of the rules. The artist was accused of being incapable of reproducing the beauty of the young model with his own skill. This episode, along with a meeting with Francesco Vezzoli, was the starting point for the project L’Age du bronze, a set where many agents are gathered to interpret this imitated, but at the same time almost natural, role. A group of students from the University of Visual Arts was invited to the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice to join a lesson. They worked for one hour, and the students faced some technical difficulties because of their limited knowledge of drawing. Reproducing the model Francesco Vezzoli was an entertaining way to reflect upon of the artist’s commitment and artistic skills. HOUSE OF POSTCARDS 2009 Installation 187 Postcards In the aftermath of a severe panic attack, I react by trying to regain control through the regulation of breathing. The project ‘House of Postcards’ represents the formalization of this experience. House of Postcards is a single, open project which is set between Venice and Rome. The first part of the project consists of 187 identical postcards featuring a view from Sant’Angelo Castle in Rome. They are arranged to form a pyramid structure. At the opening of the exhibition, which was in Venice, vibrations in the floor caused by movement in the hall precipitated the collapse of the castle. The audience was invited to collect the fallen postcards and send them to the printed address whenever and from wherever they desire. Before being catalogued, postcards are reused for the construction of a new castle. Contrary to the Venetian exhibit, however, this creation will be carried out without an audience. House of Postcards Fotografia digitale Stampa lenticolare 50 x 70 cm. HOUSE OF POSTCARDS Digital Photography Lenticular print 50x70 cm. House of postcards is a lenticular printing, an image which compares the two previous installation: the castle of 187 postcards created in Venice and the one of 92 postcards created in Rome with the postcards which were actually sent. House of postcards is printed in such a way that it is impossible to observe the two pyramids simultaneously. The work has the same features as the installations which it represents: to have a complete vision of the image, we need to change our position, changing our point of view and focusing on those who, participating in the construction of the first castle, were responsible for its fall but also for its birth. OMAGGIO A MIES VAN DER ROHE 2008 Installation Chestnut tree poles, ten Palms trees Environmental dimensions Realized in Villa Torlonia park in Rome. The work aims to create a space in a place where, paradoxically, even in its natural state it’s impossible to perceive something natural. Park evolution, thanks to its varied evolution over the course of history, appears to hide nature through suggestive formal compositions. The work consist of six wooden structures, based on the model of the four previously existing wooden structures, which were used to support the trunks of some ill palms. The repetition of this support on the sane palms, is the tribute to Mies Van der Rohe. In the created empty space, the vertical nature of the structures is related to the big palms and to the different architectural structures of the park: a clear sign pronouncing meeting between nature and man.
