Mario Moretti Polegato nasce a Crocetta del Montello nel
1952. Laureato in giurisprudenza, imprenditore veneto si
dedica prima alle attività di famiglia, impegnata nel settore
agricolo da tre generazioni, e poi diventa presidente del
Gruppo Geox da lui fondato, leader in Italia nella produzione
di scarpe comfort nel settore lifestyle-casual.

Mario Moretti Polegato born in Crocetta del
Montello in 1952. Law Graduate, businessman
from the Veneto region, worked first in the
business of the family which had been working in
agriculture for three generations, and then he
became president of the Geox group, founded by
himself, the Italian leader in the production of
comfort shoes in the lifestyle-casual industry.

Scarpe e yachts un connubio perfetto di stile e comodità. Come si immagina la scarpa ideale che unisce questi due mondi?
Entrambe le cose: oltre a stile e comodità hanno in comune, per chi le usa,
la voglia di sentirsi liberi. Chi vive lo yacht vuole sicuramente evadere da
una vita normale, liberarsi da ogni vincolo e farsi regalare dal mare grandi
emozioni e sfide continue. La scarpa esige anch’essa, oltre allo stile rigorosamente alla moda con i tempi, grande comfort che, oggi come oggi, equivale ad avere una buona salute. Questa è la richiesta maggiore da parte del
consumatore.
Shoes and yachts, a perfect combination of style and comfort. How do you
imagine the perfect shoe that combines these two worlds?
Both those things, in addition to style and comfort they share the desire to
feel free in common for the people who use them. Anyone who makes the
yacht his or her life certainly wants to escape from a hum drum existence,
shake off all bonds and make the sea provide great thrills and constant
challenges. Similarly, the shoe, in addition to the strictly fashionable style
abreast of the times, is also a great comfort that, nowadays, is tantamount to
good health. This is the requirement of most consumers.
Ha mai pensato di creare una scarpa per tutti gli armatori e in generale
per tutti gli appassionati del mare e delle barche?
Sicuramente si, la nostra tecnologia Geox abbraccia tutti i settori. Per
quanto riguarda gli appassionati del mare vogliamo andare incontro alle
loro esigenze creando una scarpa che li aiuti a sentire il meno possibile l’impatto che c’è tra lo stare in barca a piedi nudi e l’indossare le scarpe quando
si scende in porto. C’è bisogno di una scarpa che mantenga i piedi asciutti
e allo stesso tempo li lasci liberi di respirare.
Have you ever thought about creating a shoe for all ship owners and in general
for all lovers of the sea and boats?
Of course. Our Geox technology covers all fields. As for sea lovers we want to
cater to their needs by creating a shoe that will help them to feel the least
possible impact existing between being on the boat barefoot and wearing shoes
when disembarking. You need a shoe that keeps your feet dry and at the same
time lets it breathe.

una collezione limitata di 300 modelli tutti al femminile, dal tacco che
richiama il celebre grattacelo, ideata per inaugurare una nuova apertura
del marchio sulla 34° strada di New York. Ha mai pensato di omaggiare
ogni paese del mondo creando anche per loro una scarpa ad hoc?
For spring-summer 2010 you created the "Geox Empire State Building" a
limited collection of 300 models, all for women, with the heel reminiscent of
the famous skyscraper, designed to usher in a brand new opening of the brand
on 34th Street in New York. Have you ever thought of honouring every
country in the world, creating a shoe just for them ?
We are doing so. But each country has its own requirements due not just to

Lo stiamo facendo. Ogni paese però ha le sue esigenze dovute non solo alla
moda ma anche al tipo di clima. In questo momento stiamo creando delle
scarpe adatte a tutti i paesi freddi che hanno bisogno di camminare sulla
neve a temperature molto basse e quindi hanno bisogno di una scarpa impermeabile, comoda, che lasci il piede libero di respirare e allo stesso
tempo lo mantenga caldo. Le nostre Geox dunque, dedicate in modo particolare a tutti i paesi nordici, sono scarpe in pelle, alla moda, total breathable e total waterproof.
La “Geox Empire State Building” , come abbiamo visto, è sicuramente
una scarpa unica nel suo genere. Qual è il suo concetto di unicità?
In un momento come questo di forte competitività in tutti i settori, che deriva inevitabilmente dal progetto di globalizzazione ovvero di libero scambio, per mantenere alto il concetto di unicità bisogna mantenere alto il livello
dell’innovazione e della qualità. L’unicità è il fattore essenziale per mantenere
alto il livello di ogni azienda, la Geox in questo è sicuramente riuscita.
Per la sua azienda ha scelto il nome “Geox”, a cosa si è ispirato?
Anche nel nome che ho scelto per la mia azienda c’è sicuramente l’idea di
globalizzazione infatti è un nome che si può pronunciare in tutte le lingue
del mondo. Esso è l’unione di due concetti fondamentali per la nostra
azienda: “Geo” deriva dal greco e significa “terra” e sta ad indicare l’idea di
comodità nel poter camminare con delle scarpe avendo però la sensazione
di camminare a piedi nudi, come ad esempio su uno yacht. Mentre la “X”

The "Geox Empire State Building", as we have seen, is definitely a unique
shoe. What is your concept of uniqueness?
At a time like this, with strong competitiveness in all sectors resulting
inevitably from the globalization or free trade model, we must maintain a
high level of innovation and quality to main the concept of uniqueness .
Uniqueness is the key factor for keeping the performance of each company
high, Geox has certainly succeeded in this.
What inspired the choice of Geox for the name of your company?
Even in the name I chose for my company there is certainly the idea of
globalization, it is, in fact, a name that can be pronounced in all the
languages of the world. It is the union of two concepts fundamental to our
company: "Geo" comes from Greek and means "earth" and has been chosen
to indicate the idea of comfort in being able to walk in shoes, yet with the
sensation of walking barefoot, such as on a yacht. While the "X" is
synonymous with technology, an element that is also essential for any selfrespecting shoe.

è sinonimo di tecnologia elemento anch’esso essenziale per ogni scarpa che
si rispetti.
Tre parole per racchiudere il mondo Geox.
Nel terzo millennio in cui ormai le persone investono gran parte del loro
tempo alla ricerca del benessere e della salute, è giusto dare loro un mezzo
che le accompagni nel loro percorso attraverso una scarpa Geox sinonimo
di tecnologia, moda e unicità.
Quali sono invece i momenti che fanno respirare bene il Dott. Moretti
Polegato?
Il momento migliore della mia giornata, che mi da grande respiro e soddisfazione, è quando ricevo le innumerevoli lettere di ringraziamento per la
grande innovazione che sono riuscito a portare nelle case di tutto il mondo.
Qual è stato, nella sua lunga carriera, il momento più difficile che ha dovuto superare?
Il momento più arduo è stato sicuramente quando ho dovuto lottare per far
sì che la mia idea venisse ascoltata e successivamente industrializzata. Praticamente quando ho dovuto trovare “il vestito per vestire l’idea”.
Dottore, lei nasce in una famiglia di imprenditori attivi nel settore agricolo e vitivinicolo. Come mai ha deciso di intraprendere una nuova avventura in tutt’altro settore?
La mia famiglia segue il mondo vitivinicolo da ben tre generazioni. Oggi
ad occuparsi di questo importante patrimonio è mio fratello Giancarlo che
è attualmente il presidente delle nostre aziende, “Villa Grandi” e “Gioiosa”
che sono tra le più importanti esportatrici di vini nel mondo. Per quanto
riguarda invece la mia avventura nel mondo delle scarpe nasce dall’esigenza
personale di risolvere il problema di camminare con delle scarpe insalubri
per la mia salute.
Dedica parte del suo tempo all’insegnamento facendo lezione agli studenti e a giovani imprenditori nei principali atenei italiani ed europei.
È un’altra delle sue innumerevoli passioni o vuole diffondere la sua
brillante carriera a chi desidera seguire il suo esempio?
La mia passione più grande sta nel vedere la capacità e l’impegno che ogni
persona, me incluso, mette nel realizzare o migliorare quello che esiste nel
mondo. Ammiro tutte le persone che lavorano con le loro idee avendo poi
la capacità di portarle fino in fondo. In questo senso vorrei dunque diffondere l’entusiasmo ai più giovani.
A tal proposito che suggerimento darebbe a chi segue da sempre i suoi
successi e vorrebbe intraprendere la sua stessa strada?
Il sistema Italia è un sistema che ha indubbie capacità di creare però a tutto
ciò manca la cultura di gestire la cultura. Suggerisco quindi a tutti gli idea-

In the third millennium, where people now spend much of their time in search
of wellness and health, it is right to give them a resource, that accompanies

and uniqueness.
What are the moments that make Dr. Moretti Polegato breathe easily?
The best moment of my day, that gives me great satisfaction and lets me take
time out to breathe is when I receive countless letters of thanks for the great
innovation that I have been able to bring to homes around the world.
What, in your long career, has been the most difficult moment you have had
to overcome?
The most difficult moment was definitely when I had to fight to ensure that
my ideas were heard and subsequently industrialized. Basically when I had
to find "the clothes to dress the idea."
Doctor, you were born into a family of businesspeople operating in the
agriculture and wine fields. What made you decide to undertake a new
adventure in a completely different industry?
My family has worked in the world of wine for three generations. Today it is
my brother Giancarlo, currently the President of our companies "Great Villa"
and "Joyful", among the largest wine exporters in the world, who is looking
after this important asset. As for my adventure into the world of shoes, it
comes from the personal need to solve the problem of walking in shoes that
were injurious to my health.

tori di parlare delle loro idee con gli amici più cari per verificare se l’idea
può essere utile in un futuro, successivamente brevettare il loro modello e
in seguito bisogna appoggiarsi alle università che sono centri di eccellenza
validi per riuscire a portare a termine nel migliore dei modi i nostri progetti.
Dovendo descrivere la sua personalità ed il suo carattere attraverso una
delle sue calzature quale sarebbe?
Il mio carattere e la mia personalità mi portano all’esigenza di voler far felice le persone nel sociale, in particolare i bambini. Soffro molto nel vedere
situazioni di disagio così cerco di dare il mio contributo attraverso un elemento essenziale per “farsi strada nella vita”: le scarpe.
Paragonando invece la mia personalità ad una delle mie scarpe la paragonerei alla nuovissima calzatura sportiva “Net”. Il
brevetto Geox per le calzature da città corrisponde
all’applicazione di una membrana su di una suola
in gomma forata, all’altezza dell’avampiede. Nelle
Net, invece, la membrana è posta lungo tutta la superficie del piede e la suola in gomma è stata sostituita da una rete (dall’inglese, Net) metallica
che garantisce una traspirazione ancora maggiore,
ovvero quella necessaria durante l’attività sportiva.
Abbiamo creato una prima linea per il running,
ma si può usare tranquillamente durante tutto il
giorno e rappresenta sicuramente quel connubio
tra scarpe e yacht di cui parlavamo all’inizio.
È l’ideale per chi ama il comfort e per chi come
me vuole avere la sensazione di camminare in
paradiso.

of your many interests, or do you want to make your brilliant career available
to those who want to follow your example?
What I love seeing most is the ability and commitment that everyone, myself
included, puts into creating or improving what exists in the world. I admire
anyone who works with his or her ideas and then has the skill to carry them
through. So, in this sense, I would like therefore to spread enthusiasm to young
people.
In that regard, what advice would you give to someone who has always
followed your successes and would like to do the same?
The Italian system is a system that has an undoubted capacity to create but
lacks the culture to manage culture. I therefore advise all creators to talk about
their ideas with their close friends to see if the idea can be useful in the future,
then patent their model and then must rely on the universities that are centres
of excellence for best managing to carry designs to fruition.
If you had to describe your personality and your character through one of his
shoes what would it be?
My character and my personality lead me to want to make people happy in
society, especially children. I suffer terribly when I see situations of hardship
so I try to make my contribution through the essential element for"getting
ahead in life”: shoes.
However, comparing my personality to one of my
shoes, I would compare it to the brand new "Net"
sports footwear. The Geox patent for city footwear
corresponds to the application of membrane on a
perforated rubber sole on the ball of the foot. With
Net footwear, however, the membrane is placed
along the entire surface of the foot and the rubber
sole has been replaced by a metal “net” which allows
the foot to breathe even, in other words, to breathe
as necessary during sports.
We have created a first line of running shoes, but
they can be used worn throughout the day and
certainly represent that combination of shoes and
yachts were talking about at the beginning. It is the
ideal for comfort lovers and for people like me who
want the sensation of walking in paradise.
