Since 1992, this world renowned company has been owned by a group of entrepreneurs from Italy’s Piedmont region, headed by President and CEO Roberto Gallo. In addition to its 16 flagship stores throughout Italy, and another in France, the brand can also be found at the world’s most elegant boutiques and department stores, including Bergdorf and Sacks Fifth Avenue in New York, Harrods and Selfridges in London, Galleries Lafayettes and Printemps in Paris, Isetan in Tokyo, an Harvey Nichols and I.T. in Hong Kong, to name just a few. Can you tell us about how the renowned company Borsalino came to be? Giuseppe Borsalino was born in Pecetto di Alessandria in 1834, and came to be known as “u siur Pipen”. In 1850, Giuseppe Borsalino decided to move to France, a country that boasts one of the world’s leading hat manufacturing industries. Giuseppe returned to Alexandria in 1856 after obtaining the necessary “certificate” to open his own workshop, and in 1857, armed with his passion and newfound experience, he established his family’s legendary company, which would go on to make its mark on the hat industry for generations to come. Legend has it that the hat was born as a useful object and then became an ornament, ever more fantastic. It is thought to have originated in the Far East in the form of a cone of mixed hairs and was how people living around the Mediterranean covered their heads for centuries. At the end of the XVIII century the first ancestors of the modern hat were born: the hard, high cylindrical male hat (1796), the top hat (1805) and the man's collapsible silk opera hat (1812). It is precisely from this century long tradition that the taste and style of Borsalino was born. Giuseppe Borsalino & Brother S.p.A. was founded in 1857 in Alesandria by Giuseppe Borsalino, and has acquired over the years, the world leader in the production of hats, becoming an icon of Made in Italy. Its hats are universally known for its excellent quality, the unmistakable style and timeless elegance and Borsalino is one of the rare cases where a trademark has become synonymous with a product. Interviste: Roberto Gallo I I I I I I I I I I “timeless style and evergreen” How and when did the model arise that would bear the Borsalino name? Legend has it that the hat of MP Cristiano Lobbia was struck by demonstrators during a demonstration against the Tobacco Industry, resulting in a “dent” at the centre that ultimately gave rise to the classical form of the Borsalino model. The two lateral “lumps”, on the other hand, which represent another distinguishing feature of the Borsalino model, are derived from the gesture that men once used when encountering women, whereby they would tip their hats using three fingers, applying slight pressure to the sides of the hat itself. Hence the history of Borsalino. The film “Borsalino”, with Alain Delon and Jean Paul Belmondo, was produced in 1970. How much influence did this hat have upon the success of the film’s stars? Many hats have been worn by actors in feature films, and a number of their characters are still remembered more for their hats than for the scenes in which they appeared or the lines that they spoke. Some characters have even become famous precisely for their hats. The Blues Brothers, for example, wouldn’t have become legends without their Borsalino hats, and let’s not forget Humphrey Bogart, who would never have elicited such emotions in Casablanca if it weren’t for his Borsalino. Immagini storiche lavorazione cappelli Borsalino. Al centro, Giuseppe Borsalino Your hats have been worn by great historical figures, including Napoleon III, Giuseppe Verdi, Hemingway, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito, and many others. Who would you like to see wearing one of your hats today? Today, we are proud to see our hats being worn by important individuals in the fields of culture, economics and politics, starting with the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, who is an extremely loyal customer. I’d like to see our hats being worn other Presidents in the future, perhaps Obama. Last year the Milan Triennial hosted the exhibition entitled Il cinema con il cappello. Borsalino e altre storie, (“Hats in cinema. Borsalino and other stories”), which was sponsored by the Borsalino Foundation. How did the idea for this show arise? It’s an idea that had been in the works for some time and re-emerged to mark the brand’s 150th anniversary in 2007. The two “Borsalino” films of the 1970s, which bore the company’s name and logo, certainly created a strong bond between the Borsalino brand and the cinema, but the true story dates back even further. It was during the 1940s, in fact, that the film Casablanca created a trend amongst the brand’s dedicated enthusiasts, but the hats used in many films dating back to the early 1930s were also strictly Borsalino models. The Borsalino Foundation, on the other hand, which promoted the show, was 139 magazine I I I I I I I I I I “classe, eleganza e personalità” “class, elegance and personality” I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 140 turale alle spalle. The foundation succeeded in bringing the idea to life by creating an exhibit that included all kinds of hats, not just those manufactured by Borsalino, in order to render the history of the hat all the more compelling. To what extent, if any, did the philosophy and the values of Borsalino evolve with the change in management? The company’s traditional values of elegance, tradition and excellence are unshakeable and have remained unaltered over time. In fact, I would say that they have been attributed even greater importance. Instead, we’ve been working extremely hard to give the company a new impetus, above all in the field that has always represented one of its strong points: exports. What stylistic developments did the new group bring about? We have placed a lot of focus upon a vision of style that we have defined as “beyond fashion”, attributing a great deal of importance to research, materials and production methods, as well as to the study of the company’s historical archives. All this is carried out in complete harmony with the fashion trends, which have been perfectly adapted to the Brand itself, thus providing our customers with a unique product of exceptional quality: a true exemplar of Made in Italy excellence. In 2007, the company established BorsalinoLAB, a research and development workshop that’s entirely separate from the production chain, but is also extremely attentive to the industrialization of the resulting products, even the most elaborate. The possibility of combining new blends with new manufacturing techniques has allowed Borsalino to come up with innovative products without compromising on traditional craftsmanship, which continues to play a major stylistic role. What role has the hat played in recent years? It’s become an indispensable accessory for those who want to add a touch of class, elegance and personality to their appearance, without falling into excess. What are the latest trends in relation to these garments? Interviste: Roberto Gallo I I I I I I I I I I 141 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I In the world of high fashion, they are often presented in “oversized” models and are seen as fashion accessories that give a touch of glamour to an outfit or to a collection. For the current market trends, on the other hand, they are seen as “must have” objects, especially amongst young people; they should be practical, but should also convey a strong sense of personality. Since the end customer has become increasingly attentive to the quality of the product in all its aspects, a great deal of attention is paid to the materials, the proportions and the colours. How does the design for a new hat arise? What are the influences and ideas that the design draws upon? Looking beyond the trends in terms of colours and shapes, a good design must be based upon carefully balanced proportions; a hat can be a beautiful “object”, but if it’s disproportionate to the face or to the person, and accentuates his/her defects, it loses all of its beauty. Materials, weight and concentrations of colour represent the other fundamental components of the project. Borsalino hats arise from the interpretation and the evolution of the Brand’s timeless style. If you were to interpret our present economic situation with a hat, what would it look like? Alas, that would be a black Borsalino!
