Barone Ricasoli è la più antica azienda vinicola
italiana e una delle più antiche aziende del
mondo. Dal 1141, quando la famiglia si stabilì
nel Castello di Brolio, il nome dei Ricasoli è
legato al vino e al Chianti.
E’ del 1584, in una stampa dell’albero
genealogico dei Ricasoli, una delle prime
immagini di questa zona della Toscana famosa
per il suo vino. Ed è nel 1872 e grazie a Bettino
Ricasoli, politico illustre del Risorgimento
italiano oltre che uomo di scienza e grande
imprenditore agricolo, che il vino Chianti
Classico ha scoperto la formula con cui è fatto
tuttora. Oggi Barone Ricasoli è un’azienda
moderna che produce ed esporta in ogni angolo
del mondo vini apprezzati dagli appassionati
e dagli intenditori più esigenti che ricevono
i riconoscimenti delle più importanti riviste
internazionali.
A guidarla è Francesco Ricasoli, pronipote di
Bettino, che nel 1993 ha iniziato un progetto di
sperimentazione che ha via via perfezionato le
caratteristiche uniche dei vigneti e del territorio
della tenuta creando nuove etichette e aprendo
nuove strade alla cultura viti-vinicola e all’arte
del bere. Un progetto nato e cresciuto nel
Castello di Brolio, il luogo in cui da più di otto
secoli ha sede Barone Ricasoli.

Barone Ricasoli is the oldest wine producing firm
in Italy and one of the oldest enterprises in the
world. The name of Ricasoli has been associated
with wine and the Chianti since the family
established itself at Brolio Castle in 1141.
A print of the Ricasoli family tree dating from
1584 offers one of the first images of this area
of Tuscany famous for its wine. And in 1872
Bettino Ricasoli – illustrious statesman of the
Italian Risorgimento, man of science and eminent
agricultural entrepreneur – discovered the formula
with which Chianti Classico wine is still made.
Today Barone Ricasoli is a modern company
which produces wines and exports them all over
the world. These wines are appreciated by the most
demanding enthusiasts and experts and have
received recognitions from leading international
journals.
The firm is managed by Bettino’s great-grandson,
Francesco Ricasoli, who in 1993 began a project
aimed at perfecting the unique features of the
vineyards and the estate, creating new labels and
new vistas onto wine growing, wine producing
and the art of drinking wine.
A project born and developed at Brolio Castle,
where Barone Ricasoli has been located for over
eight centuries.

Le prime pietre del Castello di Brolio
risalgono all’alto medioevo. Il castello entrò
in possesso dei Ricasoli grazie a uno scambio
di terre già nel 1141. Nei secoli il castello
ha subito assalti e distruzioni in numerose
storiche battaglie, dai quattrocenteschi attacchi
aragonesi e spagnoli, alle dispute seicentesche,
sino ai bombardamenti aerei e d’artiglieria della
seconda guerra mondiale. Oggi il maniero, più
volte ricostruito e modificato, porta i segni delle
più diverse epoche: dai bastioni fortificati del
medioevo agli inserimenti del romanico e del
neogotico, sino alle specificità dell’Ottocento
toscano. Allestita nel cassero, la parte più antica
del castello, la Collezione Ricasoli raccoglie
pezzi unici e rari che raccontano la storia della
famiglia Ricasoli, uomini d’armi che hanno
combattuto a fianco dei Medici e che in seguito
hanno dato un contributo fondamentale
all’Unità d’Italia. Articolata in quattro sale
tematiche, la Collezione espone nella prima
le armi di famiglia dal XIV al XIX secolo. La
seconda stanza è dedicata a Bettino Ricasoli e
al suo operato politico in epoca Risorgimentale,
mentre la terza raccoglie gli arredi preparati
appositamente per la visita del re Vittorio
Emanuele II a Brolio nel 1863. La quarta sala
infine è dedicata alla ricerca e agli esperimenti
condotti da Bettino sulla vite e sul vino e vi si
trova anche parte della collezione di minerali e
fossili raccolti personalmente dal barone.
The first stones of the Brolio Clastle dates back
to Dark Ages. The castle was given to the Ricasoli
family in 1141 exchange for lands. Through
the centuries the castle has suffered attack and
destruction in numerous historical battles, from
Aragonese and Spanish attacks during the fifteenth
century, to disputes in the seventeenth century
right through to bombings and artillery attacks
during the Second World War. The castle has been
rebuilt and modified several times and today it
bears the marks of the different eras: from the
fortified medieval bastions to the Romanesque and
neo-Gothic additions and the unique nineteenth
century Tuscan details. Housed in the keep, the
oldest part of the castle, the Ricasoli Collection
puts together unique and rare pieces that tell the
history of the Ricasoli family, knights fought
side by side with the Medici and later made a
fundamental contribution to the Unification
of Italy. Divided into four themed rooms, the
Ricasoli Collection shows family weapons from the
fourteenth to nineteenth centuries in the first room.
The second room is dedicated to Bettino Ricasoli
and his political work during the Risorgimento,
while the third contains the furnishings made on
the occasion of King Victor Emmanuel II’s visit to
Brolio in 1863. The fourth room is devoted to the
research and experiments carried out by Bettino
on vines and wine and also contains part of a
collection of minerals and fossils personally collected
by the Baron himself.

concludes with the tasting of three different wines
in a private room.
The Terroir Tour for viticulture enthusiasts
includes a stop at our picturesque vineyards. If
you don’t have so much time for us, we suggest
that you take a Castle Tour or a guided visit of
the Ricasoli Collection. The four rooms of this
small museum house the family’s weapons from the
fourteenth to the nineteenth century, documents
and historical exhibits regarding Bettino Ricasoli’s
research on vine and wine making.

case coloniche settecentesche della tenuta
Barone Ricasoli, oggi adibita a guest house
e agriturismo di charme. In una posizione di
assoluta tranquillità e circondata dai bellissimi
vigneti di proprietà gode di un panorama che
spazia dalle torri di Siena al Monte Amiata e
Radicofani. Nella villa, ristrutturata nel pieno
rispetto dell’architettura rurale Toscana, sono
stati ricavati un ampio soggiorno, una zona
salotto e quattro stanze doppie con bagno.
A disposizione degli ospiti, ampia area di relax
con piscina all’ esterno con una stupenda vista
sulla campagna Toscana.
Agresto is a charming guest house situated on a hill
to the southwest of Brolio Castle, and is one of the
most beautiful, eighteenth-century farmhouses on
the property of Barone Ricasoli. It is located in an
incredibly tranquil part of the estate and completely
surrounded by Brolio vineyards where one can
enjoy the panorama that stretches from the towers
of Siena to Mount Amiata and Radicofani. The
villa, which has been restored in authentic Tuscancountry architecture, was beautifully renovated
and includes a spacious living room and four
double rooms with bathrooms. Guests can also take
in the breathtaking views while relaxing outside
by the pool.
