Microsatelliti: esperienze a confronto in UK, Giappone, Italia Monday, 19-Apr-2004 2:50PM China, April 19 (UPI) -- China launched its first nanotechnology-based satellite, Nano-satellite I, successfully into space Monday. Nano-satellite I was the first nanotechnology-based satellite ever developed by a country independently, reported Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency. The satellite made China the fourth country in the world capable of launching nano-satellites after Russia, the United States and Britain, according to Chinese space experts. China's small satellites have been used for the purposes of scientific experiments, resource survey, natural disaster forecast, environment prospecting and monitoring. The super small satellite, developed by the elite Qinghua University and Aerospace Qinghua Satellite Technologies Co. Ltd., features lighter weight and a higher degree of integrated designing than previous satellites. The Centre comprises six thriving academic research groups generating new ideas and visions for future space missions through advances in satellite technology alongside the provision of postgraduate degree courses and training. The research drives advances in small satellite technology that are exploited through the University's commercial company - Surrey Satellite Technology Limited. A total of 19 small satellites have been launched by Surrey into low Earth orbit carrying a wide range of satellite communications, space science, remote sensing and in-orbit technology demonstration payloads. Research subjects • Astrodynamics The study of the dynamics of spacecraft. This subject includes mission analysis, satellite orbital motions; spacecraft attitude, guidance, navigation and control and estimation. • Remote Sensing Fire Risk, Monitoring and Detection, Volcanic Monitoring, Oceanography using GPS Reflectometry • Planetary Environments Space Science, Magnetospheric models, radiation effects on electronics. • VLSI Systems FPGAs, hardware accelerated compression and signal processing • Propulsion • Bipropellant engines, Solar Thermal, Green propellants • Signal Processing • GPS, Coding, Estimation Hystorical background • In 1981 a group of academic and research staff working in what was then the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Surrey were responsible for the design and manufacture of UoSAT-1, a 50kg micro-satellite conceived and built in under 30 months at a cost of less than £0.5M. The success of this mission led to a second microsatellite, UoSAT-2, being built and launched in 1984. • Over the last two decades the Space Centre has established a reputation for the development of innovatoive systems • We have demonstrated the first GPS receiver to work on a microsatellite in space; we demonstrated the fastest position fix in space and developed and flown the world's smallest attitude determination and control system. We have been among the first to demonstrate attitude determination using multiple GPS receivers and are poised to demonstrate the first GPS reflectometry of ocean state. • The Surrey Nanosatellite Application Platform (SNAP) was developed through research projects within the Space Centre and launched in June 2000. This small 8.5kg satellite was the world's smallest fully functional nanosatellite complete with miniaturised attitude control system for 3-axis stabilised satellites using a miniature momentum wheel; miniaturised GPS receiver for autonomous orbit control; a propulsion system for formation flying manoeuvres; a CMOS machine vision system for automated inspection and an inter-satellite communication system for receiving GPS data from other satellites in a formation. •Surrey has also been one of the first to demonstrate a fully automated orbit maintenance system that corrected for the effects of atmospheric drag on the minisatellite UoSAT-12. The satellite was automatically manoeuvred into a repeat ground-track orbit with a 7 day 120 orbit cycle with two passes directly over the Guildford groundstation each cycle. The satellite was then maintained in this orbit for a period of 8 months autonomously correcting for energy loss due to drag. •With the opportunity of the combined launch of SNAP-1 and the Tsinghua microsatellite we also attempted the first formation flying experiment in LEO. The SNAP propulsion system was used to correct for the effects of differential drag between it and the microsatellite and to adjust the altitude to phase with the microsatellite. The aim was to use the onboard vision system to photograph the microsatellite whilst maintaining a fixed separation in coorbit. The mission successfully demonstrated the techniques of phasing the two satellites but due to limited propellent available was unable to complete the rendezvous during a time of high solar activity which exacerbated the differential drag effects. • Space Related Courses at Surrey • The University of Surrey offers course at undergraduate and postgraduate level with space related modules taught by members of academic staff at the Surrey Space Centre. • In the Electronic Engineering department we offer an MEng pathway in Electronics with Satellite Engineering (UCAS code H621). This is a 4 or 5 year pathway with an optional industrial placement year. • In the Physics department we offer an MPhys pathway in Physics with Satellite Engineering (UCAS code F362). This is a 3 or 4 year course with optional placement year. • • • • • • • • • • • • PHD TOPICS WITHIN SSC SMALL SATELLITE SAR CHIPSAT FORMATION FLYING .
