IAAPA: GOODBYE ORLANDO! 38 After 3 successful editions in Orlando, in 2009 Iaapa Attractions Expo moves to Las Vegas. The new location is unlikely to prove better than the leisure capital city. For the time being, I can tell you that I have seen a document that my highly active friend Falgas had the main exhibitors of fun fair attractions sign in Orlando, requesting the organisers to cut the prices of the stands in Las Vegas by 50%. In fact the increase in the main costs for the exhibitors of rides at this new location is also due to the requirement to employ the exhibition centre coop for handling the equipment in and out, and this item alone, for a company such as Zamperla for example, would mean an increase of _85,000. In any case, as they say: we’ll see. As regards “seeing” then, what interesting things were there at this exhibition? Ticket Redemption Come ho anticipato già a settembre, di ritorno dall’Amoa, qualche nuovo gioco l’avremmo dovuto vedere proprio qui (almeno così mi avevano confidato i vari costruttori). As I mentioned in September, when returning from the AMOA expo, some new games were expected in Orlando (at least various manufacturers had promised me this). Actually there was nothing exceptional: except for the idea making increasingly giant redemptions. In this regard, I can mention Pop it for Gold Extreme, Red Hot and Fire & Ice measuring 2.20 m, Spin’N Win Jumbo and the enormous Frankestein’s Laboratory by 5 Star Redemption: all machines that, given their size and costs, need to operate with 2 coins per play. Back at normal size, I didn’t seen much new: Sea Wolf The Next Mission, with six new game stages, will certainly be a good success, just like Timing by Andamiro, which seemed to be an easily understandable redemption. Apart from some other Chinese games, I don’t recall any other machines worthy of note. We will see if there is something new at ATEI London. Video games Surely the game I liked most was the Harley Davidson by Sega … shame that it will start production only in March 2009 and, then, most likely will not be available for the summer season. Unlike the first version of Harley Davidson made around ten years ago (one of Sega’s worst simulators, being virtually unrideable), this update is truly fascinating, and even for someone as hopeless as me it was possible to complete the easy circuit. Another motorbike simulator was the one made by Namco: called Nirin, it takes after the models already available on the market. Certainly the dual drive Hummer by Sega will make a big impact. Its cost, even if not declared but easily imaginable, will make this game an object for the lucky few. In the shooting sector, worth highlighting is the previously seen Rambo, which we hope will soon be approved in Italy too, given the success it is having in the rest of the world, and Razing Storm by Namco, with the same construction philosophy as Time Crisis 4. There was always a queue to try a great two-guitar music game by Konami, while a lot of interest was aroused by an interactive game for children by Sega, Brick People, based on the ability of creating special Lego constructions that, when suitably placed on the sensor screen, help fun little animals search for food. This will certainly be a good success in all the children houses … but will approval be required for this too? Miscellaneous Striving to look for innovative attractions to place alongside the classic coinops described above, so as to make our FECs increasingly appetising, one interesting product, albeit not a brand new one, is the use of special synthetic flooring, similar to Teflon, for the construction of roller blade and ice skating rinks. The unique feature of this Spanish product is its rapid installation and dismantling, the precision in fitting the various pieces together, and the affordable cost. Chatting to the guys who were trying the attraction, I got the idea that even if the overall effect is not the same as ice, you can still do all those acrobatic spins you see in competitions, only with a little more physical effort. “Excellent for training!” commented the friendly skaters. As usual, there were many exhibitors of laser tag arenas, an always greater number of compact and coin-op bowling games, and increasingly perfected 4D cinemas. In this regard, I met my friends who sold me the Fantawild 4D and who, with immense joy, showed me the latest film produced: ‘Cross Racing’, based on my input and pressure applied for four years. Mike Liu thanked me for the idea and promised that he will send me all the material to allow the Italian translation to be completed by Christmas. The lovely Gabriella Zoni and CarmenZeolla, Rimini Fiera kindly accepted to watch this and other films with a scientific content, such as ‘The Birth of Life’ and the ‘Legend of the Pharaohs’ at the Fantawild stand, and they were so impressed that they are now evaluating the possibility of displaying my 4D cinema at the next Enada in Rimini, so as to promote this attraction, unique in Europe, to Italian operators. We hope to manage to do so. On the other hand, the most unusual stand, in my opinion, was the one selling “live” goldfish, which nibbled the hands and feet of some volunteers, providing a sense of relaxation and wellbeing. Well! De gustibus non disputandum est … each to their own taste, I prefer fried fish however! Finally, if they manage to halve the costs, the cabin, for one or two users, that photographs just the players’ faces, combining them with two bodies designed by the computer, and having P–L–A–Y–M–A–C–H-I-Nthe two users dance to the tune of the latest hit songs, will be a huge success. The Fantawild 4d stand in Orlando showing a 180° screen, one of the best available 4D movie theaters for FECs and leisure parks. The new feature is that, rather than burning a CD with the recording of the film, this can be sent, via Bluetooth, to the players’ cellphones and be used as the wallpaper or when a call comes in. We will see how this develops soon. Italian exhibitors Surely, without the Italian exhibitors, this trade show would not make sense. In fact, those who brought fully operating major rides were manufacturers from the Veneto and Emilia regions, who also had to sustain the costs of 500/600 sq.m of stand space. It would be impossible to name them all, however we must remember that Made in Italy does not only mean Ferrari and Armani, but above all many companies that bring honour to Italy for the inventive, design and technology they apply to the construction of the rides used in the world’s best parks. The attendance of Italian operators looking for something new to invest in was also good. Just to mention some: Paolo Dalla Pria, Roberto Marai, Lino Morosini, Osvaldo Giannuzzi, Oronzo Colella, Fulvio Rosselli and many others. Conclusions Obviously, like all decent foreign exhibitions, the meeting between Italian operators was a good opportunity to reflect on the recent events that have, once again, brought turmoil to the Italian coin-op business: the increase of 0.7% in the single tax and the sudden depreciation of the euro against the dollar. With the help of the president of SAPAR, Paolo Dalla Pria, we were able to find out more details on the ‘blitz’ amendment to decree no. 149 regarding games, forced through Parliament almost unanimously by the Lega party! Incredible but true, practically the Government and the opposition voted in favour of a proposal that takes a further 0.7% from the already meagre income of slot operators in favour of horse racing! I don’t know how this will be translated into in English, however even the best translator could not manage to make foreign readers understand what has happened in Italy. The income of a sector that is already agonising has been cut in favour of another that, at least in the collective imagination, is owned by the wealthiest people in Italy. An inverse Robin Hood: take from the poor to give to the rich. I could understand if this 0.7% went to the children living in Congo, and nowsuffering a war, or a recognised charity, however a sector for the select few such as horse racing, I can’t understand. Following a splendid show on Sky TV, where Astro president commented on this unjustified decision, one operator noted that helping horse racing means, albeit indirectly, sponsoring SNAI, that is, a licensee that manages bets on horse racing and that uses the profits from this to directly manage slot machines in all those premises (ours) where they have set up corners, and 44 ASCOLTANDO L’ESPERTO prelievo erariale unico dello 0,7% e il repentino deprezzamento dell’euro nei confronti del dollaro. Harley Davidson by Sega and the ‘massaging’ fish seen in Orlando. corner, quindi nostro diretto concorrente! In altre parole ‘cornuti e mazziati’! Forse è meglio che torni a pensare ai miei Mangiaticket! consequently are our direct competitors! At the end we consoled ourselves by thinking that it could have gone worse (introduction of Videolotteries with the simultaneous withdrawal from the market of our slot machines). As concerns the decrease, over three months, of more than 20% of the purchasing power of the euro against the dollar … the opinion was unanimous, things will surely get even worse, so there are just two possibilities: either stop importing machines from the United States, or increase the prices of the games made there by ’at least’20%. Certainly both solutions would only have one outcome: crisis and recession. Call me the Cassandra of the coinop sector if you will, however at least this time I am only reporting the opinions of others, even if unfortunately these are shared. We hope that Obama understands that “Yes, we can” does not just mean helping banks and the auto industry with public money (which, by the way, I don’t think the US government has an abundance of), but that above all the cost of the dollar should fall, thus increasing exports and creating jobs for millions of unemployed. However, having seen on television the presentation of the three ‘new minds’ at the US Finance Ministry, recognised as being among the best economists in the world, I have serious doubts that this recipe is too simple. Perhaps I should go back to thinking about my ticket machines! Post Script In the dictionary this term, deriving from Latin, is defined as “a way to highlight a subject to the reader, added as an afterword, in the hope of attracting attention”. This time, however, as the translation and layout of the article has already been completed, I am forced to announce the news, albeit already tragically known, of the assault by CONI (the Olympic Italian Committee) on the New Slot machines with the appropriation of a further 0.7% of profits. In essence, in just one month, our government’s creative finance has established, first by decree and then with an amendment to the 2009 Budget, that the huge blunders and waste of the horse racing business and the Olympic Committee, will be compensated by the earnings of the owners of New Slot machines. Clearly, if the first 0.7% was unacceptable (14% less on the gross profits of the operators) 1.4% would be unsustainable. It is clear that we will ask the premises owners to shoulder 0.7, detracting it from their profits: however I am interested to see their reactions and those of certain ‘vultures’ among our colleagues who will take advantage of the situation with obscene offers! Would it not have been simpler if the ‘little treasure chest’ of 0.5% of the IN going to the State Monopolies over the last two years and awaiting its final destination (this totals 200 million euro), were ‘advanced’ to the ‘unfortunate’ horse racing and CONI, until more suitable funding is found, reflecting on the situation for a little more than 24 hours as our Parliamentarians have done? Am I talking ‘rubbish’? Perhaps, given that I have not heard any similar proposals at any of the many meetings I have taken part in over recent days. Once again, I should go back to worrying about my ticket machines. We will see what happens over the next few days, given the mobilization of the New Slot business by the trade associations, including the network licensees. Happy 2009 to all: poultry, pig and cattle farmers, if you have had problems with chicken flu or dioxin in the fodder … ask for help from the New Slot business; Venice hotels damaged by the high tides … ask for help from the New Slot business; prostitutes in Rome, no longer able to ply their trade in Via Salaria and having to pay rent for alcoves … ask for help from the New Slot business: don’t worry, help will be given!q Post Scriptum I vocabolari traducono questa locuzione latina come “un modo per evidenziare al lettore un argomento che, segnalato come ultima informazione, fa sperare a chi lo scrive che venga letto con attenzione”.
