PROGRAMMA DEL CORSO (per studenti NON FREQUENTANTI): La gioia e la
malinconia; il bello e il mostruoso: percorsi estetici e testuali nella letteratura inglese dalla
Restaurazione alla fine dell Ottocento
Il corso si propone d introdurre ed illustrare attraverso esempi testuali alcune delle categorie
estetiche e filosofiche che caratterizzano lo sviluppo della letteratura inglese a partire dal 1660 fino
all età Vittoriana. Dopo un excursus storico-culturale, gli studenti saranno guidati nell analisi
testuale di poesie, drammi e brani di prosa che si ritengono rappresentativi dei rispettivi generi cui
appartengono e che esemplificano le espressioni più eclatanti delle categorie del bello e del
mostruoso, oltre che delle tensioni emotive che affliggono gli autori. Categorie estetico-letterarie
come quelle della gioia e della malinconia, del bello e del mostruoso non muoiono ma, riflettendo
specifiche dinamiche culturali, storiche e sociali, si evolvono o trasformano nel corso del tempo. Il
percorso letterario si avvarrà d incursioni interdisciplinari nei territori dell arte figurativa e della
filosofia per sottolineare la condivisione di determinati motivi ed interessi tra artisti, pensatori e
scrittori che hanno segnato momenti importanti della storia culturale inglese (e non solo).

ESAME: L esame orale rifletterà le modalità di presentazione delle lezioni: in genere in italiano, ma con
numerosi intermezzi in inglese, per preparare gradualmente gli studenti all ascolto di lezioni interamente in inglese
(dal III anno). Gli studenti dovranno, in ogni caso, obbligatoriamente preparare in inglese le parti generali riguardanti lo
sfondo storico-culturale (cf. Norton Anthology).
