TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This is the bread that came down from heaven. (…) Whoever eats this bread, will live forever! The Gospel of John continues to provide believers with the opportunity to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist and the real presence of Jesus in our midst every time we
gather to worship God and celebrate our Faith. Over and over again, we have heard the Lord stating the importance of being in communion (common union) with Him in order to profit from the gift of life everlasting. Jesus presents himself as the bread that came
down from heaven and makes it clear, for his listeners, that those who will feed from this bread will nourish themselves in ways that
no other diet can provide. Those who took pride because their ancestor ate manna in the desert are now challenged to open their
hearts to a broader spiritual horizon: They are called to live forever!
The highly Eucharistic tone of these discourses invites believers to reflect seriously in the importance of our weekly gatherings as Disciples of Christ. Going to Church every Sunday is part of our religious tradition as Christians, however, we are expected
to comprehend, in a deeper manner, the why’s and how’s of our liturgical celebration. When we come to Church we listen to the
word: God speaks and instructs us in our Christian journey. Then, we break the bread and bless the cup: We nourish ourselves with
the body and blood of the Lord. In doing so we celebrate that we are God’s chosen people, a royal nation called to witness through
our ways of life the Good News of Salvation. Additionally, by doing this we embrace the promises of Jesus and we discover ourselves called to live forever because, even beyond death itself, the Grace of God will make it possible for us to abide in the very
heart of God, the Father almighty.
The importance of Sunday Mass in the life of the disciples of Jesus must be promoted and encouraged in the Christian
community. It is in that solemn act that we as believers become one with God who calls all His Children to enjoy the gift of new
life in Christ. Our weekly appointment with the Lord should become the central moment of our faith life because from that sacred
act we draw the strength and the necessary courage to make it through life as true disciples of the Lord.

¡Yo soy el pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo, el que coma de este pan, vivirá para siempre! Los últimos domingos nos han proporcionado la oportunidad de reflexionar los discursos de Jesús sobre el Pan de Vida y la importancia de mantenernos siempre alimentados
por ese Pan. No son textos de fácil comprensión, por el contrario de pronto pareciera que confunden el corazón del creyente de la
misma manera que confundieron a los que en su tiempo escucharon al Señor pronunciar estas palabras. El que coma mi carne, el que
beba mi sangre… estas expresiones pueden ciertamente, ser causa de escándalo cuando se sacan de su contexto religioso-espiritual.
El tono Eucarístico tan marcado que tienen estos discursos y las reflexiones que de ellos emanan, nos animan a re-descubrir
la importancia de nuestras celebraciones semanales como familia de Fe. Nunca podremos decir que se insiste demasiado en la necesidad de promover la asistencia a Misa Dominical y la importancia de acercarnos a la comunión, pues en esa acción sagrada, los
creyentes somos alimentados con el Pan Vivo que promete Vida para siempre. La necesidad de mantenernos alimentados con la
Eucaristía dominical se vuelve una urgencia en nuestra realidad contemporánea tan teñida por situaciones que provocan desolación,
soledad, abandono y en última instancia la muerte misma. Es precisamente la comunión constante con Cristo lo que provoca que
nuestros corazones desolados encuentren el sentido necesario para avanzar en la existencia con dirección segura. Cuando el creyente
se aleja del altar y no hace de la Sagrada Comunión su alimento para el viaje, la vida se complica y muchas veces se pierde la dirección provocando que nuestros corazones vaguen sin sentido en la existencia. Por el contrario cuando nuestros domingos son marcados por la cercanía a Jesús Eucaristía en la Sagrada Comunión nuestra vida se compone retomando el rumbo cierto hacia la eternidad misma.
Ojala que estas reflexiones tan hermosas sobre el Pan del Cielo y sus promesas de Vida Eterna animen a volver a casa a
aquellos que se han alejado del altar. Que sus corazones desorientados y sus vidas carentes de sentido puedan descubrir la importancia de mantenerse conectados con Jesús, el único capaz de dar Vida y Vida en Abundancia.

Nel Vangelo di oggi ci avviamo verso la conclusione del discorso sul pane della vita, così come viene riferita da san Giovanni. In
questo caso più che mai, sarebbe vano voler distinguere ciò che Gesù intendeva dire da ciò che l’evangelista ha compreso, dopo
molti anni di esperienza ecclesiale. Tutto il discorso, e in particolare la conclusione, riflette il ricordo serbato da Giovanni della
rivelazione che Gesù ha fatto di se stesso attraverso la sua parola e la sua croce: egli è stato e continua ad essere per noi il pane vivo
disceso dal cielo, carne e sangue donati per la vita del mondo, comunione con il Padre e con lo Spirito, cibo di vita eterna e pegno di
resurrezione.
La conclusione del discorso accentuando il simbolismo eucaristico già presente nella prima parte, si riferisce in maniera esplicita
all’eucarestia, con parole che si ricollegano strettamente ai racconti dell’ultima cena. Gesù, nel suo sacrificio sta per offrire la
propria persona concreta come cibo e bevanda, che bisognerà mangiare e bere. Accoglierlo realmente sotto i segni sacramentali
significherà, per il cristiano, raggiungere con lui un’intimità nuova, partecipare alla comunione divina ed eterna del Padre e del
Figlio, ricevere la promessa della risurrezione nell’ultimo giorno. Tutti gli ulteriori sviluppi della fede vengono qui messi in stretto
rapporto con la missione del Signore e con il disegno di salvezza che Dio persegue fin dalle origini,
Un pezzo di pane: è tutto ciò che rimane di Gesù, che le sue parole chiariscono il gesto di prendere e mangiare, entrando in
comunione con lui. Chi mangia viene a sua volta «assimilato», unito a Gesù tanto quanto è aperto ad accoglierlo e viene invitato a
donarsi anch’egli senza misura. Potremmo sperare una parola d’amore più grande di questo straordinario scambio? Il pane di
vita: questo discorso di Gesù è fin troppo chiaro anche se sconcertante: il mistero dell’eucarestia rientra nel mistero, incredibile, del
piano di amore di Dio che offre il suo Figlio per la vita del mondo. Coloro che si accostano al pane di vita senza finzione e non per
abitudine, sanno che lì c’è la risposta a tutto il loro essere cristiani: salvati dall’amore, portati a nuova vita, membri di una chiesa di
fratelli, chiamati ad una gioia scena fine, si nutrono di Cristo come di parola di vita eterna e pane che dà la forza per vivere.

The season for music ministry will soon be upon us! If you
love to sing or to play an instrument, please join the Festival
Choir of Singers and Instrumentalists who meet on a weekly
on Tuesdays in the St. Anthony Room.
No audition is necessary; only a dedicated spirit is required.
Our September schedule is as follows:
On Tuesdays, Singers for Festival Masses and Weekly masses
will meet from 7-8pm in the St Anthony Room;
Those who wish to train as cantors will meet weekly from
8-8:15pm in the St Anthony Room;

AT THE TABLE
In today’s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a
woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and
confidently about her temple‑like home. She doesn’t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be a
people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom’s table. There they may and can
eat and drink deeply.
Today’s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his
words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek
God’s will and act on it.

Chi mangia di me vivrà per me...
Proseguiamo oggi con il discorso di Giovanni, sono alcune domeniche, ormai, che san Giovanni ci accompagna con il suo Vangelo, è il cosiddetto discorso
eucaristico del vangelo di Giovanni. E oggi Gesù giunge al cuore della sua catechesi, sul pane di vita. Giunge all'apice e fa una grande rivelazione: chi ha
fede in lui come inviato dal Padre, come messia, non solo crederà in lui, non solo professerà la fede in lui, ma si nutrirà di lui, mangerà il suo corpo,
berrà il suo sangue. E nell'antichità più o meno lontana, ci sono stati dei personaggi che insegnarono che Gesù pensava solo in termini simbolici, che
non si trattava del vero suo corpo ma solo del pane che simboleggia il corpo... del vino che "non è" suo sangue ma che "significa" suo sangue... Tutte
queste teorie sono state sempre condannate dalla Chiesa perché Gesù parla molto chiaramente, usa i verbi "mangiare", "bere", gli stessi che venivano
usati per mangiare, bere durante un pranzo o una cena. E i discepoli, sentendolo parlare così, sentendo che dovranno mangiare il corpo del Maestro,
bere il sangue di Gesù, sicuramente sono rimasti perplessi, e non solo loro... Si sono quasi scandalizzati. Dicono: «come lui può darci il suo corpo (la
sua carne) da mangiare? Probabilmente anche noi ci saremmo scandalizzati, se non avessimo l'esperienza di Cristo risorto, con il suo vero corpo, risorto. Ecco, ciò che il Signore vuole dirci oggi è quel suo antico ma mai spento desiderio di abitare in mezzo agli uomini che egli ama, di farsi, diventare, egli stesso cibo, non come la manna del deserto ma il cibo per il cammino verso la pienezza della vita, che uomo può trovare solo in lui. Già nella
prima lettura, dal Libro dei Proverbi leggiamo dei preparativi. La sapienza che costruisce la casa, che imbandisce la tavola, che invita i commensali:
«venite e mangiate il mio pane, venite e bevete il mio vino». Ciò che leggiamo qualche secolo prima di Gesù viene applicato proprio a lui, a Cristo. È lui
la Sapienza eterna del Padre... Sappiamo allora chi è che invita... Ma potremo chiederci: chi sono gli invitati?, chi sono i commensali della sapienza?
Per essere invitato, per essere idoneo a ricevere il suo invito alla festa, sono indispensabili, sono necessarie alcune condizioni: la consapevolezza di
non possedere la sapienza... di non avere il discernimento..., di non avere l'intelligenza per percorrere la via della vita con le proprie forze... Il cuore
dell'uomo deve essere aperto a Dio, al desiderio di Dio e non presuntuoso di sapere tutto e di saper fare tutto da solo. Solo colui che sente dentro di
sé la fame di Dio, il desiderio di Dio, può essere invitato, può essere sfamato da lui. Domandiamoci: quante volte abbiamo cercato di costruire sulla
nostra sapienza, come sono finite queste prove, questi tentativi? Che cosa abbiamo costruito? La Scrittura dice: «se il Signore non costruisce la casa
invano vi faticano i costruttori»... E Gesù ci ripete ancora: «chi mangia la mia carne, chi beve il mio sangue, dimora in me e io in lui. Colui che mangia di
me, vivrà per me...». Chiediamo ora al Signore, perché la nostra vita testimoni sempre la verità di queste parole, che noi viviamo per lui, a causa di lui,
e che insieme a tutti i cristiani sappiamo ricevere Gesù. E non solo nel pane eucaristico, ma riceverlo anche nel malato, nel bisognoso, nel povero, nel
sofferente... Il Signore ce lo conceda.

A LA MESA
En la primera lectura de
hoy, la sabiduría se presenta
como una mujer rica en
aplomo y gracia. Se mueve
fácilmente y con confianza
en torno a su templo-hogar.
No anda mariposeando,
nerviosa y preocupada. La
sabiduría envía a sus doncellas a invitar a todos a su casa. Los invitados no tienen que
tener ningún talento o conocimiento en particular. Tan
sólo necesitan ser personas de buena voluntad y sentido
común. Se les llama a dejar atrás las tonterías y buscar
para sí mismos un lugar a la mesa de la sabiduría. Ahí
pueden comer y beber a fondo.
El Evangelio de hoy nos lleva de nuevo a la mesa de
la Eucaristía. Jesús les habla a aquellos que buscan entender sus palabras, y, tristemente, a aquellos que tratan de
evadirlas. Como pueblo nacido de Dios, estamos llamados y preparados para buscar la voluntad de Dios y ponerla en práctica.

Si usted no ha inscrito a sus hijos para el programa de

Hay un grupo para personas en la tercera edad llamado, “Alegría y
Tranquilidad.” En él, las personas hablan de problemas como depresión, enfermedades, y conflictos con los hijos. A través de diversas
actividades los participantes aprenden prácticas que les permiten
mejorar su calidad de vida. Asista los lunes a las 10:30 am.
En el grupo, “Mujeres Seguras y Libres” las mujeres estudian conceptos e implementan prácticas que les ayudan a mejorar su autoestima,
a tomar sus propias decisiones y a tener más confianza en sí mismas
para lograr sus metas. Asista los miércoles a las 6 pm.
