Protagonista dell’Umanesimo tardogotico which will be inaugurated on November 22, 2016 at the Accademia Gallery. The work arrived in Florence well in advance of the opening of the exhibit in order to subject it to a series of diagnostic tests realized by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence and thus master the painting technique of the great Florentine artist, documented from 1387-1412, and investigate the original structure. Last year on October 17 at the Accademia Gallery of Florence, in via Ricasoli 58, was held a study day focused on the Triptych, during which have been exposed the results of the tests and analyzed the rich musical iconography of the central element of the Triptych, providing a hypothesis of ideal reconstruction and how the work was originally presented in its whole Italiano I l Trittico di Gherardo Starnina, un autentico capolavoro della pittura tardogotica fiorentina, raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino in trono fra angeli e quattro santi, è stato prestato alla Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze dal museo tedesco Martin von Wagner-Museum der Universität Würzburg in occasione della mostra Giovanni dal Ponte (1385-1437 ca.). “Donatello and Verrocchio Rediscovered Masterpieces” T he exhibition presents bust in terracotta depicting San Lorenzo which was recently identified as the work of Donatello, designed and realistically modelled around 1440, and a relief, also made of terracotta, with Beheading of San Giovanni Battista, attributed to Verrocchio. The latter has the same subject, size and composition, both figural and in architectural prospective matter, of the scene commissioned to Andrea del Verrocchio for the Silver Altar, built between 1366 and 1483 for the Baptistery of Florence by more artists, including Verrocchio and Antonio del Pollaiolo, the leading exponents of the Floren- tine sculpture in that time and great rivalry between them and a symbolic heritage of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Both works are from the collection of Peter Silverman and Kathleen Onorato, known collectors. Culture 文化 Культура November - December 2016 www.florenceisyou.com The Art under water The Crucifix by Cimabue, symbol of lost heritage By Francesco Gurrieri Architect A strange fever that we grasp as a form of vitality – of opposition at Thanatos, to the instinct of death – seems to accompany the people involved, to recall the days of the flood from November 1966. In reality, that distant event from 1966, for those who lived it, was, in its time a human drama (for the dead, the suffering, the anxieties, the loss of jobs and material possessions) and a civilian trauma because of the realization of the institutional unpreparedness to face it. Unfortunately in November 1966, the Fire Department, from the barracks in via La Farina didn’t even possess an adequate and efficient boat to reach the flooded areas, where the overflowing water was four-five meters high; in fact, the West detachment of Florence, close to the Indian viaduct and the Highway, was built and made operational only in the beginning of the 80s. In reality, only after a few days of frantic initiatives at the Prefecture and Palazzo Vecchio (with Mayor Piero Bargellini), mobilizing the army, some things began to move forward. But above all it was the solidary effort of the citizens to conform the “great answer” of Florence. A solidarity race which saw to work closely parishes and community institutions, which empowered the survival of many families, promoting that mutual confidence in the recovery of essential services and then gradually the employment. Here we need to mention more than anything the cultural heritage and the race of international generosity which allowed the salvation, opening a new and unexpected scientific period and a method that made Florence the knot of the “new culture of conservation”. When reflecting about the matureness of the principles and methods of restoration, we must prejudicially honor some people that since the first hours of the 4th November have heroically engaged in the salvation of many works of art from the Gabinetto Restauri and from Corridoio Vasariano: Ugo Procacci, Luisa becherucci, Umberto Baldini, Mazzino Fossi: these are the “officials” who disregarding their safety – Ponte Vecchio and Corridoio Vasariano were vibrating against the fury of the waters, so much that it suggested an imminent collapse – saved many works of primary importance, moving tirelessly from 7,30 am on the 4th of November to 4,30 am of the next day. The reports of the flood damages have been repeatedly published in specialized publications. The certainty is that the most famous work of art damaged was the Crucifix by Cimabue which was preserved in the Refectory of Santa Croce, interpreted as a symbol of that tragedy. Moving just like a real “Via Crucis” was the transportation of the wooden Cross, from via dei Magliabechi to Cimabue, Crucifix, 1272-1280, Distemper on wood panel, 448 cm × 390 cm (176.4 in × 153.5 in). Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence Limonaia di Boboli, quickly set up in an air-conditioned temporary shelter for a slow and controlled drying in order to avoid losing other painted surfaces. With the collaboration of Enzo Ferroni, from the University in Florence, were made possible experiments, which with the use of barium, allowed the detachment of the frescoes from the walls still soaked from the water. Procacci and Baldini have ci, Paolo Del Proggetto, Bruno Santi, who eventually joined the Administration; at the Archeological Museum there was the superintendent Guglielmo Maetzke. We should not forget the contribution of resources arrived from several governments, in particular from CRIA, Committee for the Rescue of Italian Art, announced to the world by Ted Kennedy. It took years before having Il restauratore Vittorio Granchi durante i giorni dell'alluvionedel 1966, mentre opera sul Crocifisso del Cimabue nella Limonaia di Boboli. CreditsArchivio Studio Granchi Firenze taken down many frescoes, careful to retrieve the underlying sketches. Marisa Conti and Clorinda Celestini were at Palazzo Pitti and I was there as well, recently entering thanks to a concourse, and Mazzino Fossi, art historian at Pitti; at the Gallerie together with the historic figures of Procacci, Becherucci, Chiarelli, Baldini there were Evelina Borea, Marco Chiarini, and Luciano Bellosi; on the occasion collaborated (and then as external “scholars”) Antonio Paoluc- a reasonable quotation of that tragedy, but in the end the results came through. After a few years during which was consolidated the Restoration Laboratory set up at the Fortezza da Basso, after international scientific conferences, Umberto Baldini wanted to organize (with Paolo Dal Poggetto) the Exhibit “Firenze Restaura”: an event that marked the passage from the discipline of the art of restoration to the science of restoration, introducing the most ad- vanced technologies both for the “diagnostics” phase of the intervention, but also for the “executive” one. This is how Florence was recognized as the “capital of restoration”. In realtà, solo dopo alcuni giorni di frenetiche iniziative in prefettura e in Palazzo Vecchio (col sindaco Piero Bargellini), mobilitando l’esercito, qualcosa cominciò a muoversi. November - December 2016 www.florenceisyou.com After fifty years the “Ultima Cena” by Giorgio Vasari returns to Santa Croce By Olga Mugnaini Journalist for La Nazione H alf a century ago, the waters of the Arno river devastated and disfigured people and things without regard. And in their collective thoughts, the flood in Florence became a symbol and a warning of what could happen to our great historical, artistic and cultural heritage if it is not adequately protected and secured. Among the many “victims” of that illustrious November 4th, 1966, there was also the beautiful, poetic and mystical “Ultima Cena” by Giorgio Vasari, housed in the Museo dell’Opera di Santa Croce which was found dramatically submerged in water and mud for more than 48 hours. It seemed irreparable. Along the years, seeing that the preparation of the table was mixed into the paint layer, it was continuously thought that only a miracle would be able to reinstate the faces of Jesus and the Apostles, the lighting effects and the perspective depth environments paintings from Vasari. But a miracle really happened, because over the decades there have been inventions and the development of new technologies that were able to remedy what appeared to be an irrevocable loss. To fulfill this task it was once again taken to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, in which due to the 50th anniversary of the flood, they have managed to finish the restoration and return the hefty painting (around 200 cm x 62 cm x 580 cm high) to the Opera of Santa Florence is You! Giorgio Vasari, Ultima Cena, 1546, Firenze, Santa Croce. (dettaglio) credit: ZEPstudio/Opera di Santa Croce Croce. “The board will be placed in the refectory, facing the other Last Supper, a fresco by Taddeo Gaddi” explains Irene Sanesi, President of the Opera di Santa Croce, “but this time the masterpiece of Vasari will not be in danger of floodings, compared to when it was exposed in 1966 in our museum. Because, thanks to a study done by the University of Florence and to an intervention made by the Civil Defence, a lifting mechanism was implanted, for when an alarm goes off, it will lift the painting safely to eight meters high within at most three minutes”. The painting has also been restored thanks to Art Bonus, with a final contribution from Prada. The great “Ultima Cena” by Vasari was commissioned for the Convento delle Murate in Florence and then, following the suppression of religious orders from the Napoleonic era, transported to Santa Croce. In fact it is recognized from the past that the writings of Soffici published between the first and second decade of the twentieth century and the cultural initiatives he supported and organized (such as the First Italian Exhibit of Impressionism held in Florence in 1910) built a decisive moment for the rejuvenation and renewal of art in Italy. Eike D. Schmidt, Director of the Uffizi Gallery, comments the exhibit initiative stating that “It isn’t just a simple mapped monographic reconstruction of the maestro from Rignano sull’Arno, but it has gone beyond reconstructing the debate and intellectual challenge through the works on which he has focused his attention”. This exhibit on Soffici found a guide in his book Scoperte e mascacri. Scritti sull’arte (Discoveries and massacres. Writings of art) published in March 1919 by Attilio Vallecchi in Florence, that gathers a selection of art historical texts, mostly published in “La Voce” starting 1908. In 1919, just after the ending of the Great War, Discoveries and massacres comes as a real boundary line between two epochs: that of the European avant-garde and that of the “return to order”. The exhibit is curated by Vincenzo Farinella and Nadia Marchioni. English By Teresa Mariniello Student in Florence A nyone who walked the street that leads from the wonders of Uffizi to the flavored focacce of “Antico Vinaio” couldn’t have missed to notice the small shop of Jamie Lazzara in via dei Leoni. A small wooden door with a tiny glass window that leads straight into the microscopic kingdom of six square meters of the American luthier. Walking by, at any time, you will notice a woman bent over a working table busy carving pieces of wood. Thus, as soon as my violin needed it, I went to her driven by an enormous curiosity more than necessity. Jamie Lazzara was born in the United States, in Urbana, Illinois. After attending the California State University from Long Beach she transfers to Florence in 1979, where she graduated in the art of restoration. In the following six year she studies at the prestigious School of Violinmaking in Cremona in order to be able to learn the art of manufacturing stringed instruments in the city of luthiers par excellence. After graduating she opens her first Florentine shop in 1978. She invites me in, she is a woman in her fifties, with a big smile on her face. The American accent is unmistakable. I wouldn’t advise you to enter her shop with the instrument on your back: the maneuvers are quite difficult to make inside! I ask if I can take a few pictures of her lab and, to my surprise, Jamie tells me that I am not the only one fascinated by the place: director Ridley Scott, during the shooting of the film Hannibal, passing by the lutherie, decided to change the script to be able to shoot the scene inside her shop. Jamie agreed asking the director to give her the time necessary to put the lab in order, but he ordered her to touch nothing: everything was perfect as it was. After the two weeks needed to modify the script, Anthony Hopkins spent 12 hours to shoot the scenes inside the shop of which the walls covered in photos are testimony to the event. Going inside, on the left, images of famous musicians can be noticed, but there is one in particular that catches my attention, that of a character that every violinist who is a professional must know: Itzhak Perlman, one of the greatest violinist alive (do you remember the theme of the film Schindler’s List? That’s him). Jamie notices my curiosity and explains that a few years ago Perlman has specifically ordered a “Lazzara” violin built from the model of a Stradivarius from 1714 and that with that particular violin he played during the concert held in honor of the installation of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in 2009. It’s incredible how many amazing people are hidden among the streets of our city and I ask everyone who is passing by through Florence to visit Jamie’s shop; you will be fascinated. F orty-two years on November 11, Leonardo di Caprio ever since he was a young boy he demonstrated his passion to interpret and tortured his parents to accompany him to auditions, wanting to become an actor with any cost and confident that he will make it. And so it was. He loves the company of his friends of whom he is followed even on set, loves his work and chooses to take part in important movies, directed by demanding directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese and Aleajandro Gonzàles Inàrrito. He is not only a great actor, he is part of an environmental foundation that carries his name and to which he donates a big part of his earnings, he loves animals, he is a important collector of works of art and politically he supports the Democratic Party. This ecologist activism didn’t escape the gaze of Pope Francesco who gave him audience at the Vatican. 12 Florence is You! Life 生活 Жизнь November - December 2016 www.florenceisyou.com Tuscany, more and more “a symbol of innovation, quality and good living” Words of Stefano Ciuoffo, Regional Councilor for Productive Activities, Credit, Tourism and Commerce By Anna Balzani Continued from page 1 mercial trading of Tuscan wines. In fact with the proclamation from July 18th, 1716 he governed the regulation of wine commerce while with the one from September 24th he established for the first time the correspondence between a denomination and the territory of production, with its borders. A decisive turning point of modern agriculture. Today, as it was then, the capacity of innovation and modernization, awareness of the local identity and roots, distinguish the Tuscany region and go hand in hand with its attractiveness. The innovation is always more connected with the productive activities that represent an example of excellence on our territory, such as food processing, wine making, shipbuilding, textiles (high fashion and leather), handicrafts, artisanship, jewelry, railway district and certainly tourism, which connects all these opportunities. All of this is true even in the light if the fact that, as claimed by the Councilor Stefano Ciuoffo, Regional Councilor for Productive Activities, Credit, Tourism and Commerce, “if we take in consideration that the tourism sector represents 8% of the GPD of Tuscany it is obvious that the economy connected to tourism has to be managed in an entrepreneurial way, it has to be ‘cultivated’, and needs support and training also because the quality of our hospitability is measured by the high professionalism of places and people; we need to talk about it more, to train more, to invest in the qualification of our young people, also through the implementation of new technologies and app”. Changes in sight for the legislation of tourism also, as “the law that is currently at force dates back to the year 2000 – explains Councilor Ciuoffo – and was going to be completely innovated in order to adapt to the transformations of the offer, if managing and the touristic product which happened in these last sixteen years, but also in terms of new ways of thinking and making arrangements for the trip by the people. We are also thinking at the changes derived from the on-line reservations, tourist locations from private parties and the socalled ‘sharing economy’; an obvious regulatory gap that needed a systematic view that would respond to the new requirements of the economy and to the need of consumer protection in order to favor the construction of a responsible tourism, competent and sustainable in the whole region, from small villages to the center of great cities of art”. Underlining the importance of tourism planning “out of season” as well, the Councilor has talked about “seasonal adjustment” considering the development of coastal areas and the Tuscan archipelago, the marine parks, the spa industry and the “snow boots” namely in Abetone or Amiata and even to the border areas of the region, because in a territory that wants to be kept intact in its landscape is “important the creation of such infrastructure and services, as well as cooperation with neighboring regions; for example with Emilia Romagna, Marche, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo we drafted protocols to make and promote synergy along the central Italy”. Indisputable is the role played by the wine tourism: “Wine is a product of excellence in Tuscany and represents an important opportunity for the territory, it’s a cultural product; just consider the great interest aroused by the Tuscan wineries, cellars copyright, architecture wine and relevance at the national level”. “The journey is becoming more and more the one where you look for the emotions. We see a growing demand for ‘experiential’ tourism where the traveler wants to be more and more the protagonist of his vacation. Also often, and more and more, we think and we are looking for information on a trip on-line. We need an offer that is more welcoming and culturally structured, essential to trace new routes over the cities of art, before and during the journey. This is the objective of the project Toscana ovunque bella (Beautiful Tuscan Everywhere), which presents a history for each of the 278 municipalities in our region” continues Ciuoffo. About all of this it will also be discussed at the ninth edition of “BTO Buy Tourism Online”, the most important event on the digital tourism in Europe that from November 30th to December 1st, 2016 will animate the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. Among the guests, giants like Tripadvisor or Booking.com, world champion of online bookings, and then Expedia, Ryanair, Airbnb, leader in sharing houses and private accommodation. In 2015, digital tourism in Italy rose by 8% and is growing every year, as well as the whole tourist sector. Sales of over ten billion euro, or nearly onefifth of the total turnover. An important and strategic sector in our region, and among about 90 million tourists (increasing, both foreigners Italians) who came last year and stayed overnight in Tuscany, many have done so through the internet. This is why the day after the BTO, on Dicember 2nd 2016, the appointment is with “Ecosistemi digitali”, a public event promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Italian Regions, “developed by the Tuscan Region and by Toscana Touristic Promotion in order to define the projects and the actions to be implemented between now and 2022, in order to support with appropriate tools further development of the digital tourism” concludes Ciuoffo. Some of us even placed a coin in its mouth and let it slip hoping it would fall in between the grates and fulfill our wishes. But the story of “Porcellino” represents much more than just a lucky charm. Il Porcellino is a Florentine nickname for the beautiful bronze fountain of a boar, sculpted and casted by maestro Pietro Tacca, commissioned by Cosimo II of Medici in 1612. The sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek marble which Papa Pio IV gifted to Cosimo I in 1560. Originally placed in the Boboli Gardens, the fountain was later moved where it still stands proudly today, in Mercato Nuovo. The legends circling the Porcellino are many and the superstitions around it have roots so deep into the past that are almost untraceable. Without any doubt the fountain was considered as a source of wellbeing for its flowing water. The poor and the children had to lean on the animal’s nose in order to drink the water pouring from its mouth. In time the mussel started glowing because of the constant touches of hands. If the coin slipped in between the grates the wish would come true. The fountain is also mentioned in several literary works and the stories around it arouse curiosity and enchant the eyes of the readers. During one of his trips to Florence, the famous Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen, dedicated one of his stories to the bronze fountain in 1842. “In the city of Florence, not far from the Piazza del Granduca, runs a little street called Porta Rosa. In this street, just in front of the market-place where vegetables are sold, stands a pig, made of brass and curiously formed. The bright color has been changed by age to dark green; but clear, fresh water pours from the snout, which shines as if it had been polished, and so indeed it has, for hundreds of poor people and children seize it in their hands as they place their mouths close to the mouth of the animal, to drink. Everyone who visits Florence can very quickly find the place; he has only to ask the first beggar he meets for the Metal Pig, and he will be told where it is”. With these words Andersen starts the journey of a young boy who is carried by the awaken-to life boar on the streets of Florence. But Andersen is not the only one inspired by the Porcellino. It is said that in 1895, American author Charles Godfrey Leland who loved folklore, walked the streets of Florence trying to gather as many legends as he could from the locals. We later find one of the legends in his book about the bronze boar fountain. The story circles around a life lesson and tries to warn us to always be careful what we wish for...it may come true. No matter what the stories recount one thing is sure, the fountain of the bronze boar is one of the most popular and “touched” touristic attraction in Florence. Inspired by the art of the Renaissance, the paintings of this Cuban-born American artist use surprising materials such as coffee and carbon pigments as well as lace and fabrics. The result is a series of dream-like images in which reality and illusion connect and the past mingles with the present to create a language that is both metaphorical and poetic. The exhibition is a part of the fourth edition of CONTEMPORANEAMENTE, an initiative promoted by the “Associazione Via Maggio” and intended to bring attention to those who work with new art forms, design, craftsmanship and contemporary culture in Florence. The artist said that “When I paint these women, I reach out to the fairytale of my lost childhood which, after leaving Cuba, I managed to keep alive thanks to the love and nurturing I continued to get from my amazing parents and the smell of the Cuban coffee my mother brewed every morning”. The artist’s work will be displayed together with paintings from the collection begun by the great-grandfather Enrico Frascione in 1893, continued by the grandfather Vittorio and subsequently enriched by Federico and Sasha, now including works of art by great masters from the 14th century to the present day, such as Piero di Cosimo, Luca Giordano, Alessandro Rosi and Giacomo Balla. 13 November - December 2016 November 25th, 2016 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women By Lorella Pratelli I n 1999 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, thus formalising the date chosen by a group of female activists who met in Bogota in 1981 for the Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting. The date was not chosen by chance, it is a reminder of the terrible assassination of the three Mirabal sisters which happened in 1960, during the regime of Rafael Trujillo, in the Dominican Republic. Since then, the whole world celebrates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by proposing initiatives to sensitise society on gender-based violence. Domestic violence is far more common than we think, it affects women of all social classes and ages, as sadly evidenced by news reports and the newspapers we read every day, and oftentimes, they remain private, thus leaving a great part invisible. The Artemisia association offers free help and guarantees their anonymity to women and children who are victims of violence, a landline to call for further information, psychological and stalking support, legal assistance, reception in shelters with undisclosed address. To support the association, I created during last summer a T-shirt printed with the following symbolic sentence, “Choose life”, or “Scegli la vita”, in which the profits will be donated to Artemisia, anti-violence centre of Florence. From November 25th to December 24th, at the La Pochette store, in Via delle Belle Donne 29/r in Florence. Do not allow violence to change your life. The choice of his recent Florentine move is due to the combination of its proximity to Monaco, where he mainly lives, and his love for the Tuscan countryside. He explains that “it’s only about three hours away” so when he does not spend his free time practicing or reading a book, he loves to take the highway and drive around the area. His career quickly took off as he studied with violinists such as Itzhak Rashkovsky and virtuoso Shlomo Mintz. The ability to express himself through music is, for him, a great privilege to able to overcome the most difficult aspects of life and be honest with his inner self. He continued saying that “every moment of my life, somehow, is defined by music”. When I meet him, at around 11.00 in the morning, he was already finished with his daily practice session: without technique there is no depth to the interpretation of a piece, because he emphasises that “technique is to serve the interpretation”. And he proves it to me by performing “Ballade” by Ysaye on his Guarneri del Gesù: swift fingers, impeccable intonation and a completely clear mind from any thought. Perfection in music does not exist, but if I had to imagine it, then it would be very close to what I was hearing that morning. However, it was a very calm performance compared to that of Lady Gaga’s which, after a second’s hesitation, is the first thing that comes to mind when asked about the strangest thing to ever happen during one of his performances: Lady Gaga had grabbed him by the arm to give him a kiss on the face while he was playing (violinists shudder at the mere thought of someone blocking their movements during a performance). Music is in his blood: a descendant of the violin virtuoso Ole Bull, you can feel the excitement in his voice when he speaks about it, what an honour it is to carry that weight and being able to play the same instruments as Paganini from Norway did. Imagining his life without violin, without music, would be impossible, in fact he tells me that “I would be a completely different person”. From these 40 minutes the memory of an open and educated person will remain and I can now imagine him sitting on the sofa reading “Great Expectations” or even eating a delicious scoop of gelato as only Italy can offer. life, somehow, is defined by music”. “It just loves to take pictures of me” afferma ridendo. On November 4th 1966, when the waters from the Arno devastated Florence, one of the most damaged monuments was the Basilica of Santa Croce. Therefore, at fifty years since that tragic event, the exhibition’s curators have decided to bring forth to the general public not only a simple example of how properties were damaged and the restorations that followed, but also how such a huge event may have influenced its culture and artistic creation. They are thus exposed, in a setting of great emotional effect created by architects David Palterer and Vincenzo Medardi, the works that the artists dedicated to the event, from Luciano Guarnieri and Piero Tredici, from Fernando Farulli to Paolo Frosecchi, dozens of paintings telling how art lived through the disaster. The Florentine didn’t despair The city remained united and the world ran to its aid By Pasquale Ielo Journalist W hen I came to Florence for my university studies, the city was shiny and cheerful. Beautiful and waiting to be discovered, like a new love. Yet, only two years had passed since the waters of the Arno River had overwhelmed the city with its fury and the power of a tsunami. It was November 4th, 1966, exactly fifty years ago. With two full waves, the first one at dawn, the second - more violent - from 9.00 am, a big part of the suburbs and the entire historic center were hit by 80 million cubic meters of water, mud, debris and oil. A blend of whose destructive power, as well as mechanical impact, resided in its deadly composition. The damages were incalculable, in fact they were never fully calculated. Among them were the damages to the cultural and economic heritage, but specially the damage to the people is what brought a large part of the population to its knees. Because behind the hundreds of shops or workshops, the supporting pillars of the city’s economy, there were the stories of many families and generations that had lavishly put passion, creativity, skill, all of their own energy into their activities. All these people did not just lose material goods, but saw the very meaning of their lives suddenly vanishing. Therefore, Florence seemed cheerful and shiny. In just two years the Florentines were able to pick up the torn strands of their identities and their daily lives and reform them. Of course, there were still wounds I could not see that ran deep: the thousands of works of art, books and documents that, after the rescue with the help of the beautiful and touching participation from the “Mud Angels”, were now in need of care and often strenuous restoration. Nevertheless, Florence had rediscovered itself. After its possibly hardest trial in history, surely one of the hardest, it has regained its unmistakable character: proud, practical, easy-going. This year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of those tragic events several initiatives were organised, run by the Florence Committee 2016 and other institutions. Those who love Florence will certainly not miss the chance to attend one of these. I danni furono incalcolabili, in effetti mai compiutamente calcolati. Pescare nel fango: il Museo e l’alluvione Galileo Museum, until November 20th, 2016 O n November 4th 1966, the Arno River went up to two and a half meters in comparison to Palazzo Castellani’s entryway, inundating the exhibition halls of the basement and ground floor and causing serious damage to the collections from the Institute and Museum of the History of Science (today’s Galileo Museum). At the 50th anniversary of the flood in Florence, the exhibition recalls the event by highlighting, on the one hand, the dramatic impact it had on the Institue and, on the other hand, the rescue and recovery operation of historic scientific instruments, conducted successfully thanks to the passionate commitment of then director Maria Luisa Righini Bonelli. Under her leadership, the flood was transformed from a catastrophic event into an opportunity to expand the exhibition halls, rethink the criteria of conservation and the presentation of precious collections to the public and to consolidate a network of international relationships with other museums and leading scholars. The core of the exhibition is consist- ed of a selection from flood-damaged instruments, that were subsequently restored and preserved in the Museum’s warehouse, and of volumes from the library that were severely damaged in 1966, which includes the Universal Anatomy of Paolo Mascagni (1833), an important and splendid work, which was only recently restored. T he 1966 flood has been the strongest ever in Florence not only because the huge precipitation occurred in november 4, but also because it followed a very rainly period, thus river levels were high and soil retention of the new waters was low. The question is not if a new flood will impact Florence, but when. What is the difference between 1966 and us? The bad news are that, despite the disaster, many areas interested by the flooding has been urbanized, mainly for industrial and commercial purposes in the following years: also thanks this, 30% of economical activities are at flood risk in Tuscany, a very high issue non only by an economical point of view, but also for the environment. These wild urbanizations also destroyed the channel net built by Pietro Leopoldo in the XVIII century, without any recovery attempt, resulting in faster arrival of rainwaters in the rivers, that rise up flood risk downstream. More, many areas flooded in 1966 upstream Florence cannot be flooded currently, because of reclamations works, so waters stored there that time, now would arrive in the city. But there are also good news. The implementation of weather forecasting and the Civil Protection (that are among the best worldwide) allows us to open the dams before the flood: in this way dams will not concurr to the flood level and, instead, they can retain some waters, reducing the flow. In 1966 the maximum flow has been calculated in 4.300 mc/sec. Moreover, the alert system will move artistic and cultural heritages in higher levels in the buildings. In the 70’s the bases of Ponte Vecchio and Ponte Santa Trinita has been lowered, thus improving from 2.500 to 3.400 mc/s the flow capacity. Today with more than 2.800 mc/s the flood begins in Cascine, and with 3.000 escapes toward Santa Croce at Ponte alle Grazie. For a satisfying solution we must wait 2022, when some important works, such as some retention basins in which the flood in excess can be stored in Mugello and upper Valdarno and other accomodation in the fluvial network will be finshed. But if these work would save Florence, for the lower Valdarno many problems are still open. 18 Florence is You! Culture 文化 Культура November - December 2016 www.florenceisyou.com The Festival of Tuscany It was on November 30, 1786 when Pietro Leopoldo I Habsburg Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany abolished torture and the death penalty By Eugenio Giani Presidente del Consiglio Regionale della Toscana President of the Regional Council of Tuscany T he history of Tuscany and the Tuscany of today, a place that, in the enlightened reforms of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo and during present times, claims rights and culture. On November 30, 2016 we celebrate the Festival of Tuscany, in the memory of the abolishment of the death sentence made possible by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. A sovereign, ally to freedom and progress, the first one in history to abolish the death penalty inspired by the famous work of Cesare Beccaria. It was in 1764 when Cesare Beccaria published his essay entitled “On crimes and punishments”. The theme was suggested by friend and mentor Pietro Verri, central Illuminist personality from Lombardy, that during one of the famous meetings at his palace proposed to the young men from Milan to write a work against death penalty. The essay was printed in Livorno in order to avoid censorship problems and the success was immediate. The proposition of the author to abolish torture and the death penalty railed against a centuries-old practice. Despite the violent reactions of conservatories, in a short period of time “On crimes and punishment” became the most important and widespread text of Italian Illuminism. It was the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo to take on this essay as his spiritual guide, following to the letter the concepts of Beccaria. And so, after more than twenty years of study with his councilors, on November 30, 1786 Leopoldo reformed the penal code, abolishing the death penalty and the practice of torture. Thus, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany was the first state in the world to eliminate, with only one strike, the remnants of mediaeval times such as treason, torture and death penalty. In the city of Florence, following the en- actment of the Leopoldian Code, gallows and instruments of torture were burnt into a bonfire set up in front of Palazzo del Bargello. The Festival of Tuscany, celebrated each year on November 30, was established in the year 2000 by the Regional Council in the memory of this extraordinary event, reconfirming the commitment for promoting human rights, peace and justice, with numerous events and meetings throughout the territory. The 2016 edition of the celebration is dedicated to “Modernization and reform from the times of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, with particular reference to the institution of the communities, land reclamation and infrastructure”. Florence, see the Light and You will see Yourself... By Marco Bazzichi Journalist for Askanews I n the medieval poetry often there are metaphors that hide other metaphors. The reader never ends to wonder, when, once caught a meaning, catches another, even more hidden, and even more clear and straightforward than the previous. This is what happens in the famous tirade of Dante, in the sixth chant of the Purgatory, which targets Italy, and in the last few verses, the city of Florence. The theme is the human fatigue of giving itself fixed laws, of finding the essence of morality, of considering what is good beyond an action, a gesture or a decision (“How often in the time you remember, you have altered laws, money, offices and customs, and renewed your limbs!). “See the light”, pressed Dante, and “you will see yourself like the sick patient, who finds no rest on the bed of down, but by twisting about, escapes her pain”. Of course, from a first read one can understand that “the sick” represents a sick woman who twists in bed and tries this way to ease her pain. But, of course, the premise is “see the light”. Observe the behavior of a candle Here we are far from the Renaissance By Niccolò Rinaldi Florentine, author of “Secret Florence” (Jonglez) E Italiano a storia della Toscana e la Toscana di oggi, una terra che, nelle riforme illuminate del Granduca Pietro Leopoldo e nell’attualità più immediata, rivendica diritti e cultura. Il Granducato di Toscana fu così il primo stato al mondo ad eliminare, Railways and Futurism ven if trains where you can stick your head out of the window have become rare (French writer Georges Perec wrote that “vietato sporgersi” (do not lean out) was the best-known Italian phrase in France), if you arrive by train at Santa Maria Novella station in Florence, look out on the right for a red building striking for its science-fiction shape. This bizarre construction, which dates back to the 1930s and of which only the façade can be seen from the train, has an enigmatic name, Thermal Power Plant and Central Equipment Room. There is nothing like it in Italy, perhaps not in Europe. A favourite with architecture enthusiasts, and ignored by the general public, this 1930’s feat by architect Angiolo Mazzoni is like an immense “machine”, that Marinetti, the leader of Futurism, had raised to the heights of futurist construction par excellence. Its most astounding feature actually a dual machine: the thermal power plant, equipped with four colossal boilers with standpipes, supply and distribution pumps; and the electrical control room with some 280 levers for railway signals and points. This aesthetic is unmissable: rectangular façade, glazed partitions with vertical bands and windows stretched out like cornices, a semi-circular section to rejoin the equipment room, blunt-tailed, flat-roofed and bulging into an apparent oval. If you’re looking at the building from the two nearby quiet streets, you’ll find the same collection of bay windows, circular surfaces and plane parallel shapes, as well as four chimneys interlinked by an aerial walkway reached by climbing up a perilous spiral staircase. We are far from the Renaissance here. Ignorata dal grande pubblico, ma wick, that constrains the reader to embrace a different state of mind: I don’t have to just observe anymore but also experience, from within, that that “see the light” and that “you shall see” are not addressed only to Florence but also to me, the one who is reading. After all who amongst us doesn’t make “so many subtle decisions” and then “in the middle of November doesn’t reach that certain it” that awaits in a row since “October”? Italiano N The so-called Pianta della Catena, attributed to Lorenzo Rosselli, is the first known exemplar in the history of cartography which is intended as a complete representation of the city with all its buildings and the dense network of streets and squares (1471-1482) flame when you want to put it out: it stirs, it seems to try and escape our breath, and that is the only way to remain lit. Thus, “the sick” reminds us of the similarity and proximity of its meaning with the flame. The same “inferno”, full of fire, now appears as a place of instability, of that who can’t find peace, who is never “still”, motionless in fact. Thus, this is an example of how medieval poetry in general, and that of Dante in particular, loves the layering of meanings, but not for pure entertainment. This is not a puzzle game. In fact, the literal meaning, that of the sick woman in bed, introduces an allegoric sense, that of the flame which stirs on the opera culto per gli appassionati di architettura, questo edificio degli anni ‘30 di Angiolo Mazzoni è soprattutto un’immensa macchina nel cuore della città – esaltata da Marinetti a modello di edificio futurista. Florence is You! The presidential candidate who receives at least 270 votes will be the victor, that is to say the absolute majority. The new president will take office from January 20th, 2017. Given the understandable interest in this long awaited election, the Associazione Toscana-Usa (TAA) and the Associazione Filippo Mazzei have organised in Florence the Election night, on November 8th, 2016, a big party to follow the progress of the US elections thanks to an overseas television link. The authorities present will be as follows: Abigail Rupp, US Consul General, a video of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi will be shown, Riccardo Nencini, Vice-Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Nicoletta Mantovani, councillor for the International Relations of the City of Florence, representatives of the Tuscan region and American students who want to accompany the elections will also be present. The appointment with the long election night will be hosted at the restaurant Fosso Bandito (corner with Viale Fratelli Rosselli and Via del Fosso Macinante, in Florence, near the Opera House), where after dinner, guests will be able to follow the American elections until late at night. Both associations are committed to strengthening relations between Tuscany and the US. In fact, the Filippo Mazzei Association is working on the rediscovery and value of the extraordinary story of Filippo Mazzei, a great Tuscan, friend of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, among those who gave life to the debate that led to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence of America, in fact the famous phrase “All men are by nature free and independent” is commonly attributed to him. The Associazione Toscana-Usa (Tuscan American Association, TAA) was formed in 1995 by a group of people who felt the need to create an entity with the aim of promoting cultural and scientific exchange between Tuscany and the United States, especially through initiatives to be carried out in our region or in the US. The dual nature of the association is quite clear as there two presidents, one of Italian nationality and the other one being American. Since 2000, it has become a nonprofit organisation. The condition that determined its foundation was, certainly, the common fact between the two realities, Tuscany and the United States, which have developed over time a compelling relationship from a cultural and social point of view, for example regarding education (you only have to think about the great number of American students present in study the abroad programs in our area), cinema, fashion, economy, tourism, literature, and the knowledge that such a relationship was able to develop and consolidate more and more thanks to the activity of the TAA. And there many initiatives, from the organisation of the traditional holiday to celebrate July 4th, 1776, or rather the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America; participation in the celebrations of Memorial Day, in which the last Monday of every May, the American cemetery of Falciani remembers the fallen American soldiers who freed Tuscany from the Nazis during World War II; the organisation of the Welcome day in Palazzo Vecchio, where the city welcomes American students who come to Tuscany to study in local branches of American universities; the Festa degli auguri at the end of the year that takes place at the American Consulate in Florence. The TAA association is also very attentive to female entrepreneurs and has formed a committee called Professional women’s committee through which entrepreneurs and professionals, Italians and Americans, can meet and discuss issues of interest relevant to them. The Co-Presidents of the Toscana-USA Association (TAA), Andrea Davis and Federico Frediani, explain that “the mutual cultural values between the US and Tuscany are bountiful, as was also highlighted in the recent visit of Prime Minister Renzi in Washington, and the Tuscany-USA association is Photo www.wikipedia.org an entity that aims to help maintain this community of values and does so through activities that it promotes, in close cooperation with the American Consulate in Florence and local institutions”. Essenziale, appunto. Searching for seafood restaurants in Florence? Here’s a special selection served for you... By Marco Gemelli Journalist www.ilforchettiere.it D id Florence become the “capital” of seafood? We are not exaggerating, but we need to admit that until a few years ago it was difficult to find interesting restaurants outside of the usual circle of notable names. Then, within a couple of years the openings of restaurants dedicated to catch have gradually multiplied in the city. To the point that today the quantity of the offer has increased – often, but not always – followed by a corresponding increase of quality. After the return to the city of a thoroughbred like Daniele Pescatore and his “casa di cucina” in piazza del Carmine, the first signs were given by “Amerini pesce fritto & bollicine” in Rovezzano, the tavern “Teatro del mare” in front of Teatro Verdi, the “Spuntino del pesce” in Santo Spirito and so on. Even the world of the street food has adapted to the new tendency with the arrival of the Ape-truck of “PescePane”. Then in April arrived “Burro & Acciughe” in San Frediano and a month later the “Fishing Lab” at Murate that has taken the place of the homonymous restaurant of Umberto Montano with a seafood based street food which has lowered with one blow the average receipt in two thirds. A little later “Vivo” arrived in piazza Annigoni, straight from Capalbio, with more than competi- tive prices for the category and an offer that plays a lot with crudités. In autumn it was the time to experience “Pescado” at Porta al Prato followed at a short distance (of time and space) by “I’ Lisca”. At last in San Niccolo, the old “Filipepe” transformed into “San Niccolo 39” without betraying their vocation. And the series of new openings seem to not end. There is a continuous line of people and this is why the door seems to be shredded: because of the rush of using the knuckles or hands. Or maybe the umbrellas, if it’s winter time. Typically wood puts more pressure on wood, even if one risks disrupting the Oracle. But it doesn’t matter; it is worth the risk in order to be received. There is no ticket. There is no appointment. There is no plea. There is no way to let yourself in, not even the doorbell works because there is no doorbell. The people sit in line but they don’t block the hallway. The only way to get in is to knock, the only hope that the door will open is that that door will open. It has been like this forever, tells an old woman to a girl who sits there and you can see that she is disoriented because she doesn’t understand how that place works. The old woman, who has white hair worn in a bun, tells her that when her turn will come, she won’t need to do anything else but go there in front of the door and do what that postulant just did: if the door opens, you go in; otherwise there is nothing to do, you can come back the following day or when you have time. She continues to tell her that you don’t have to pay anything; there is no currency that can attract the willingness of the gods or that can predict the vagaries of the future. She tells her that she must set her soul in peace and hope, hope that that door will open and ignore those screams that come from the next door. ietro alla porta grattugiata c’è quello che tutti vorrebbero avere dalla loro parte. By Elizaveta Korobova Journalist Y ou could have read about our new project and collaboration with Milan channel “Milan TV” concerning Russians answers to the questions of Italians in our last issue. It started because of the video of Milan TV where Italians asked Russians about the things that are important to them. They’re always interested in what other countries think about us: the way of our life, our traditions, well-being, climate, character, superstition. “Italian boot” and “Russian horse” have always had a special relationship with each other. That’s the reason of mutual interest between Russia and Italy, the Russians want to know more about Italian daily life and vice versa. The one of the emotional issues is: Why can’t you whistle indoors in Russia? Anastasia Zanegina, philologist, postgraduate student of Moscow State Pedagogical University, answers: Whistle indoors that’s bad. There is the superstition every Russian knows: don’t whistle indoors, or you’ll never be rich. This superstition has an interesting history rooted in Slavic view of the spirit world. The sharp sound of whistle associated with an invitation of an exorcised, an evil spirit. As you know, the main goal of demons is harming people. That’s why the whistle was seen as a message to the demonic, that could have led to emptying of the area where the man is (house, field, barn etc.), to disappearing of properties. Also, in the old days Slavs produced the wind through the whistle for various household needs. For example, for the grinder to start grinding, or the fair wind to blow during the travel. At the same time, this “whistled” wind could have led to destructions, storms and various disasters, because the wind element wasn’t in the people’s hands, but in the power of the spirits from another world. For example, there are Russian beliefs that the appearance of the Leshy or the devil has been accompanied by strong wind, and Nightingale the Robber from Russian epics produced the destructive wind by deafening whistle. By analogy, indoor whistle, as a Robber’s wind, blew the material and immaterial values created by human away. Now, of course, many people don’t know the history of this superstition, but they still prohibit indoor whistle. Finally, let us not forget the code of conduct: the indoor whistle is just not nice. Even if you’re a master of whistle. November - December 2016 Florence is You! www.florenceisyou.com Florence Awards - Ada Cullino Marcori Marcori created a cultural and solidarity bridge between Florence and India By Cosimo Ceccuti Chairman of the Fondazione Spadolini F lorence Awards - Ada Cullino Marcori, has reached its third edition and plans to award those who dedicated their studies to our city, its past, its present and future with doctorate thesis, essays or articles. History, art, urban planning, economy, society: all themes evaluated by the jury that amongst others is composed from the Mayor of the city, the Rector of the University in Florence and the director of the newspaper “La Nazione” or their representatives. The award, consisting of a plate accompanied by a check for three thousand euros, was founded by Roberto Marcori, in the memory of his mother Ada, a highly educated woman with moral rigor, born in Trieste on the 4th of February 1926 and transferred to Florence following the events of World War II: Florence, the city of adoption, intensely experienced and loved by her for its his- toric, cultural and artistic beauties, for its own people. In Florence, Ada created friendships, entwined cultural and social relationships, dedicating herself to important initiatives of concrete solidarity and help for the needy and sick, touched by an intense catholic faith which she passionately transmitted to young people through teaching catechism at the S. Jacopino parish. Even when her physical strength didn’t support her as it used to, she managed to make herself useful by lending her voice to the Spoken Book Lions Association, recording college textbooks to blind students. Her son, Roberto, besides powering the annual award that united the name of his mother to that of the city, donated to the New Anthology Spadolini Foundation which promotes him, a collection of works of figurative arts (paintings, engravings, antique prints that have Florence as a subject, from ‘500 to ‘900), the Florence collection – Ada Cullino Marcori exhibited in the halls of the Spadolini Library and opened to the public free of charge (via Pian dei Giullari 36/A, bus 38 from Porta Romana, from 9,30 to 17,00 from Monday to Thursday). Founded in 1897, by the Reininghaus brothers, brewers of German origins, draws from the Viennese fashion of the time the custom for which the waiters were wearing red jackets. The testimonials, photos, drawings, furniture preserved inside are an illustrious mirror of our historical heritage and famous frequenters. Its fame dates back to the early decades of the twentieth century, when it became the permanent home of the Futurists and Florentine intellectuals, for which reason since 1913 the café becomes the undisputed place to meet and sometimes confront. The quarrel that took place between the Milanese Futurists of Marinetti and the Florentine artists remains epic gathered around the magazine La Voce. Recently Giubbe Rosse has changed ownership and 48 year old Riccardo Poggi, the new owner, Florentine for generations and proud of his two daughters, Lucrezia and Beatrice, plans to “bring new light all’Associazione del Libro Parlato Lions, registrando testi universitari per studenti non vedenti. The menu is very much Tuscan, the products we use are local, we buy our meats from the Central Market, and we also offer recipes “of the old way” such as the elephant ear alla Panese, fried brain and rice fritters. Lavorano qui 30 persone, moltissimi i giovani. Culture 文化 Культура www.florenceisyou.com 23 November - December 2016 In Florence, the initiatives that combine sport, culture and solidarity By Maria Federica Giuliani President of the Culture and Sport Council Committee for the City of Florence T oday the concept of “sport” is the concept of “wellbeing”, whether it is physical or mental, they certainly go together hand in hand, in order to live in harmony with ourselves and with others. A “sporty” lifestyle is a healthy practice which supports and rewards the whole functionality of the body. Moreover, sport is a preferred means to communicate in a simple and immediate way, social messages and the ones that concern the community and allow all to be an active part in a simple way. This is why in Florence, the city administration dedicates a lot of space to these kinds of manifestations and sees its streets walked by athletes in a breathtaking setting that connects sport with culture. Florence is without any doubt an important showcase for sporting events and recalls a great number of athletes and professionals. This year as well, there are many competitions that have colored our city, the exciting blue wave of more than eleven thousand participants to “Corri la vita” now in its fourteenth edition. The event which unites sport, culture and solidarity in favor of projects for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer is the most important noncompetitive race in Italy and amongst the most important in Europe. An event that fills us with joy and pride, an expression of a great city. A unique event that is not only sporting, beneficial and cultural, but also all of these things together. There are many the races that throughout the year mark the athletic pace of runners and see the conclusion of the year in November with one of the most important marathons on an international level, Firenze Marathon, expected to attract more than ten thousand runners. The great novelties of this year, aside from the new course path, are the departure and arrival in Piazza Duomo, a finish line setting ideal for any effort. Preceding the start of the much awaited race, the hand-bike for the disabled that finally returned to Florence. In order to support the athletes along “ the city administration dedicates a lot of space to these kinds of manifestations and sees its streets walked by athletes in a breathtaking setting that connects sport with culture ” the way, for some years now was launched the Clap Contest, opened to all, musical and theater associations, street performers, masked artists, from any musical and artistic background, but most of all for the groups of people that intend to give the proper energy boost during the passage of the runners, from the first to the last kilometer. The runners who come from all over the world will experience the city and the village set up in Campo di Marte as a big celebration and an opportunity to deepen all the issues that surround this beautiful world built from sports, but also from so much solidarity, community and the joy of living. Walking through the lost garden of the Palazzo Medici in Florence By Samuele Magri Art Historian and Tourist Guide in Florence [email protected] Phone: 3405278209 S ometimes it’s very hard to imagine how the world looked like in the past: transformations and destructions have in fact altered in an irreparable manner the way we perceive things even when something seems to have reached our times in good conditions. If we think about the fifteenth-century garden of Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence the example is very appropriate given that it is the redevelopment work of the twentieth century, while the building was built starting 1445 by Michelozzo for Cosimo il Vecchio and seems to be substantially intact in its fourteenth century parts despite the additions made by the Riccardi family, the new owners of the building starting 1659. Even if the original garden no longer exists, fortunately we have some documents that can help us to ideally reconstruct this place of delight. If we could go back in time to be able to see this building in the age of Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), nephew of Cosimo the Elder, before we reach the garden we would cross the courtyard, decorated by medallions created by the shop of Donatello who inspired from the ancient and famous cameos, still present today in their place, and from a column, now destroyed, surmounted by the bronze of David realized by Donatello, that can be found today at the Bargello. Towards the back of the courtyard the connecting door was decorated by a roman bust representing emperor Adriano, which can be found today at the Uffizi. After crossing this passage you could finally see the garden, rectangular and characterized by an opened logia built on the short side towards South, that is on the left of the entrance. This structure, that is still present today even if diminished, culminated with a roof top garden inspired from those in antiquity and was decorated with Roman marble reliefs. Other antique marbles and bronzes decorated the place; among these there was a famous horse head, a Greek creation from the IV century B.C., today found at the Archeological Museum of Florence. But it wasn’t decorated only by antique works of art; the centerpiece of the garden was in fact the famous bronze group of Giuditta and Oloferne of Donatello, today at the Palazzo Vecchio. Furthermore, the documents describe the bush plants carved in shapes of elephant, wild boar, hare, ship, ram, of fox chased by dogs. However the bush, besides being a decorative element, also had a political meaning: during the visit of Galeazzo Sforza in Florence, in 1459, this bush was transformed in joint crests of the Sforza and Medici families in order to emphasize their alliance. But the garden had a very short life: in 1494, two years after the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent, the Medici family was chased away from Florence, the palace was looted and the bronzes of David and of Giuditta taken away from the courtyard and from the garden, destroying forever a perfect equilibrium between art and nature. What still remained from this place was totally destroyed in 1518, with the occasion of the marriage of Lorenzo of Medici, the nephew of Lorenzo the Magnificent and duke of Urbino and Maddalena of La Tour d’Auvergne, when the ground is paved all together. 24 Florence is You! She talks about herself saying that: “Since I was a little girl, I entertained myself with dolls or I replaced them by playing with pens, and in them I identified inventing characters different than me that moved inside the stories I invented. I had so many of them but I managed to always lose some of them. I was distracted, so distracted that as a little girl I managed to forget my cello on a bus! I can still remember the reaction of my parents, on their faces was drawn a mix of desperation and resignation. Probably playing, inventing fables with dolls and pens, fantasizing and building stories were already the first unconscious steps towards what I have chosen to do, those characters that came to life already existed in my subconscious as an actress. Perhaps out of laziness or the illusion of taking an easy path, certainly out of naiveté, at 17 years old I enrolled in the Theater school permanently giving up my university studies. At the beginning it seemed almost a game, it seemed like playing with my dolls! But in Russia theater is a very serious thing, a difficult path and I didn’t understand that; for two years I was the despair of my teacher, I wasn’t constant, I attended once in a while, being absent for some time and then presenting myself soon after, a nightmare for my teacher Lev Skrbensky, one of the greatest theater actors and directors in the world. I stayed away for almost two years and I reflected a lot during that time, so determined to continue that I looked for my teacher and although in the meantime I gave birth to a little girl I worked very hard, alternating study, dance, singing and reciting. My daughter was always with me, I never stopped, I was dancing and singing at home, recovering the time I lost, I was the first among my class. It hasn’t been easy but it was what I wanted to do, to be an actress, improving myself inwardly and giving the best of myself to the public, with simplicity. I frequented the underground Russian world animated by poets, writers and painters. I, who by nature, was brought up to interact with others, was starting a double life: a part of me bound to my daughter and the other one immersed in culture, in art and in theater. One day, my teacher invited me to recite the role of Nina in Gabbiano by Lev Dodin – I couldn’t believe it – and I had the possibility of reciting on the scene of the most famous theater in St. Petersburg, the Maly Dramatic”. And it is with this simplicity, without any hint of smugness, that Ksenija recounts her life story, transmits the 25 November - December 2016 Kesenija Rappoport La celebre attrice russa che sogna di recitare in un teatro a Firenze gratitude that nourishes towards her parents who have accepted her every choice, happy that she stubbornly pursued her path. She seems to let herself go on the wave of intimate memories with a timid smile and for a moment she seems to be far away. Then she continues: “It’s true that in life things happen out of fortunate circumstances. I started working in non-commercial films by young Russian directors, small roles in films with cultural imprint. All very different than Theater, to sit in front of the camera became the drug of the moment, it fascinated me, I dedicated more and more time “ I’ve always tried to keep the commitments I made and theater is for me a gym where I keep training with discipline ” to work, to study, and my daughter was always with me”. Then Giuseppe Tornatore arrived in Russia to choose the protagonist for “Erina” in the film “La sconosciuta” and Ksenija remembers that: “on the last day of his stay, after 4-5 months of search, early in the morning, he saw my picture and he called for me at once in Moscow. Even here the fortunate circumstances have played a definite role, without that photo Tornatore wouldn’t have chosen me for that film which brought me good luck in Italy and has opened new horizons. In Italy I continued to also work with other professionals of high level like Maria Sole Tognazzi (L’uomo che ama, opera seconda), Giovanni Veronesi, Carlo Verdone and in 2009 with Giuseppe Capotondi”. With “La sconosciuta” of Tornatore she wins the David of Donatello in 2007 for best actress and with the film “La doppia ora” of Capotondi receives, in 2009, the Colpa Volpi for best actress. Her career has been an explosive revelation on an international level, intelligent, gifted with a great, authentic charm, serious and perseverant, she is certainly one of the most admired actresses. A°MOS is infact a Florentine cartoonist resident in London, who illustrated the “Sonnets of the Months” by Fogore: 12 original unpublished hand drawn plates, inspired by the poems of Folgore, who was born in San Gimignano around 1270. These sonnets date back to his literary maturity, composed according to the “comical” Sienese and Tuscan literary tradition, in an almost jester-like fashion. He would poke fun at the society of that time, but so subtle was his approach that the said society felt flattered by the allegorical homage of the poet who parodied the chivalrous rimes of the French courteous style. “I haven’t passively adapted to these sonnets” says A°MOS “hrough the eyes of Folgore I have tried to see not as much what he experienced, but as what surrounds me: I picture the world as I see it today, following Folgore lines”. Contrasts and contradictions of customs and social attitudes: the underground calm and discursive irony of Folgore explodes in a kind of biting criticism of aspects and characters in contemporary life, hammered by advertisings, fashion trends, media and obsessive social networks: satire goes beyond the dimension of reality into the fantastic and fanciful dream, the realm of imagination. Or simply focusing the observation from different angles, as in Terry Gilliam films. After all A°Mos grew up with Monty Python and has an University Degree in Film and Broadcast Production. This novel is about Russian medieval doctor and a monk named Laurus. The protagonist tries to atone for his involuntary sin all his life. He travels a lot for his redemption. Laurus goes, particularly, to Sepulcher, in Jerusalem, in the company of Florentine named Ambrogio Flecchia, the visionary winning the time. Their friendship in the novel is a symbol of free dialogue between Europe and Russia. These two try to understand, what is the meaning of life, Who or What is God, what is faith, what is love, despite linguistic differences and different religions. Laurus even finds his religious name in Venice, performing the miraculous healing. The story of Laurus has a “Christmassy” good end. It ends with saving a life, unmasking a culprit and the best hope for the future resurrection. In this novel, more than in any other in modern Russian literature, we see the ideas and dreams of Russian writers of the 19th century about the human revival. Florence is You! But when they succeeded, they gave a performance so great that it has remained in the history of this musical genre. In fact, the singers have dignified the blues on stage, which was born from a rural means of expression and therefore were also popular. Amanda Tosoni and Andrea Caggiari have made an experiment: paying homage to the blues artists by taking the greatest classics from the archives. From Amanda’s voice together with Andrea’s electric bass, new versions of rather famous pieces are born and collected into the album, Amy On The Four Strings, published by the label Il popolo del Blues and distributed by Audioglobe. Through these two musicians the record tells an original version of the history of the female blues, from the cotton fields of the southern United States at the end of the 1800s to the resonant Methodist churches of Spirituals and Gospel, from the streets of Saint Louis in its ‘20s and ‘30s (accompanied by the empress of Blues, Bessie Smith) until the ‘60s. Some of the tracks have been musically done from scratch since only the vocals existed, others have been rearranged, reinterpreted and personalised. DESIGN AND BOOKSHOP * IN THE COURTYARD by Mandragora BOOKSHOP OF PALAZZO STROZZI * also for kids! Life 生活 Жизнь November - December 2016 www.florenceisyou.com The Andrei Tarkovsky’s Florentine “nostalgia” The famous Russian filmmaker and screenwriter spent a lot of his life in Florence Photo www.wikimedia.org By Ivan Kuznetsov Journalist and photographer By Nora Smblyan Journalist T his December Florence commemorates thirty years from the day of death of the famous Russian filmmaker and screenwriter Andrei Tarkovsky. Every film-lover knows this name, because he has greatly influenced development not only Soviet, but also the world cinema. They especially love Tarkovsky in Italy. The proof is the plaque on his Florentine house, where he spent a lot of his life. The motherland of Andrei Tarkovsky is USSR, the country he had to leave. Soviet Union didn’t let him to release his talent and censors a lot of Tarkovsky’s work. But, despite that he worked hard, such great films as “Andrei Rublev”, “Solaris”, “Mirror” and many others were filmed in the USSR. These films were well received by world critics and won a lot of awards. Tarkovsky went to Italy for a while and he fell in love with Rome in 1972. But the year 1980 marked a watershed moment for the life and art of the filmmaker. This year Andrei Tarkovsky went to Italy for the second time and stayed in the country for a long time. The first film he made outside the Soviet Union was the documentary film “Tempio di viaggio”. This film became the forerunner of his great “Nostalgia”, created in 1983. “Nostalgia” is the one of the most famous films of Tarkovsky about Italy. This is the story about Russian writer, who’s homesick, but he can’t come back. It’s like about Tarkovsky’s destiny. After a memorandum of President of the State Committee of the USSR on Cinematography named Filipp Ermash, prepared for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Tarkovsky decided to stay in Italy. Shortly thereafter the USSR authorities banned all the films of Tarkovsky and this ban was enforced until the filmmaker’s disease. In the meantime, Florence became the Tarkovsky’s second homeland. “Florence is the city that gives back my hope” - he wrote. The Florence city hall decided to get Andrei an apartment and declared him Honored citizen of the city. Tarkovsky wrote about Italy: “Italy is my second homeland, because only here I founded the chaos I lost in Russia”. Tuscany not only became a new home for Andrei, it gave him the opportunity to develop as a talented filmmaker. Tarkovsky wrote his last screenplay of film “The Sacrifice” in his Florentine apartment and he died shortly thereafter of lung cancer in Paris. A piece of Tarkovsky’s soul still live in Florence, in an ancient house on the San Niccolò street with the plaque “Tarkovskij”. His son, named Andrei, left the desk and personal effects of his father intact, for everyone who loves the famous filmmaker can get into his world for a little while.
