Georgina, una ragazza londinese visita Gerchildren

visiting Gerchildren
Il mese scorso ho trascorso qualche giorno a L’Albero Ger Children a Medellin, in
Colombia.
L’Albero
è
un’organizzazione fondata
da Ger Onlus che si prende
cura di 42 bambini tra i 6 e
i 18 anni della Comunità 13 di Medellin, una volta considerata uno dei posti più pericolosi in Colombia. Nonostante ci siano
stati cambiamenti positivi
nella zona, ancora permangono retaggi di violenza, gangs e povertà,
e l’Albero sta lavorando instancabilmente
per rompere questo circolo.
Last month I spent some time helping at
L'Arbol in Medellin, Colombia . L'Arbol is
an organisation funded entirely by Ger Onlus that looks
after
the
42
children between 6 and 18 from
Medellin's Comuna 13, once
considered one of the most
dangerous places in Colombia.
Although there have been significant positive changes in
the area, there still remains a
legacy of violence, gangs and poverty
and L'Arbol is working tirelessly to break
this cycle.
Sono stata molto fortunata ad essere stata
invitata a trascorrere un giorno di festività
con loro facendo visita nelle case di alcuni
bambini situate in una zona montuosa e
ripida che circonda la periferia di Medellin. Ho fatto visita in 6 case, la maggior
parte di esse sono auto
-costruite ma candide e
pulite. In casa di Victor
vivono 5 persone con 2
letti. Sua madre era
un’addetta alle pulizie
nell’ospedale locale e
da due mesi non riceve
il suo stipendio. Malgrado avessero la credenza vuota, hanno insistito nel correre al chiosco per comprare
un pacco di caffè istantaneo e offrirmi una
I was lucky enough to be invited to spend
a holiday visiting the homes of some of
the children in the steep mountainous area that surround the outskirts of Medellin. I visited about 6 homes, the majority
of the houses are self constructed, simple
but spotless. At
Victor's house, 5
people slept in 2
beds. His mother
was a cleaner at
the local hospital
and hadn't been
paid for 2 months.
Although they had
empty cupboards
and very little, they
insisted on running to the local kiosk to
buy a pack of instant coffee to offer me a

conversare. Nonostante le difficoltà che
stanno affrontando, mi sono sentita avvolgere dal calore e dall’ospitalità che mi
hanno offerto.
Il giorno seguente sono andata a scuola,
ad aiutare Sebastian a scrivere una descrizione di se stesso. Sebastian, 18 anni, è
quasi solo al mondo e ha appena iniziato
ad imparare a scrivere. E’ stato salvato dal
lavoro in piantagione, e non era mai andato a scuola, ma è molto desideroso ed entusiasta di imparare, sta ricevendo supporto completo dalla scuola, così un giorno potrà trovare un lavoro sicuro
e affidabile.
Malgrado ognuno di questi 42 bambini
abbia una storia triste alle sue spalle, la
casa è sempre piena di risate, sorrisi e
musica. Le lezioni di musica e recitazione,
e di diritti umani un pomeriggio a settimana offrono ai bambini una visione completa e a tutto
tondo del futuro.
L’Albero offre un ambiente sicuro, amorevole e
ambizioso ai bambini,
somministrando pasti nutritivi e mettendo a disposizione
tutta
l’assistenza e il sostegno
necessari per la scuola.
Molti dei bambini ricevono un supporto
specialistico da uno psicologo per bambini qualificato. Hanno la libertà di giocare
e l’opportunità di essere se stessi ricevendo da Giuseppe e Liliana, che gestiscono
la scuola, amore, autorevolezza senza distinzioni.

chat. Despite the difficulty facing them, I
was taken back by the warmth and hospitality they offered me.
Continuerò ad aiutare Giuseppe e Liliana
in qualsiasi modo, per fare la differenza
nelle vite di questi bambini.
I will continue to do whatever to help
Giuseppe and Liliana make a difference to
these young peoples lives.
The next day I went to the school, helping
Sebastian write a description about himself. At 18, Sebastian is almost alone in
the world and has just started learning to
write. He was rescued from working in
coffee without ever having gone to school, but is keen to learn and getting full
support from the school to allow him to
one day find safe secure work.
Although each of the 42 children have
their own sad story, the house itself is
full of laughter, smiles and music. Music
and drama classes and with one afternoon a week learning about
their human rights gives
the children a fully rounded view of the future.
L’Arbol gives a safe, loving and ambitious environment for the children,
providing nutritious meals and much needed
support with school
work.
Most of all, each child receives specialist
support from a qualified child psychologist. The children have the freedom to
play and have the chance to be children,
receiving equal amounts love and authority from Giuseppe and Liliana who run the
school.
