ALESSANDRO CORBELLI
Alessandro Corbelli
Baritone
Born in Turin, he is considered one of the world's preeminent opera
singers especially for Mozart and Rossini’s repertoire. He studied with
Giuseppe Valdengo and Claude Thiolas and he made his debut in
1973 at the age of twenty-one in Aosta as the Count Monterone in
Verdi's Rigoletto. In 1974 he is Marcello (La Bohème) at Teatro
Donizetti in Bergamo and in 1975 he is Giorgio Germont for La
Traviata in Bologna. Very well known are his interpretation of Falstaff
and Belcore but especially Don Magnifico and Dandini in La
Cenerentola by Rossini.
He performed in all prestigious opera houses around the world, from
La Scala to opera companies in Vienna, Paris, London, Metropolitan of
New York, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles and Chicago. He worked
with the most important conductors with whom he made renowned
recordings (Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Fonit Cetra, Teldec, ecc.).
He performed also among opera Festivals wordwide (Salzburg,
Edinburgh, Schwetzingen and , Glyndebourne Festivals, Ravenna
Festival and Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro). He won admiration for
his elegant singing style and sharp characterizations, especially in
comic roles.
Although primarily associated with Italian-language comic roles,
Corbelli’s résumé shows his wide-ranging interests and versatility,
including French and German roles (Sulpice in Donizetti's La fille du
regiment, Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte), Baroque opera
(Seneca in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea) and a twentiethcentury English-language opera (Nick Shadow in Stravinsky’s The
Rake's Progress). He has also sung roles in later Italian comic operas,
for instance the title roles in Verdi’s Falstaff and Puccini’s Gianni
Schicchi. He is active in the concert hall as well, performing as a soloist
in oratorios and vocal symphonies.
His stage presence is commanding and he excels in comic timing and
subtle characterization.
He also holds masterclass with great success.
