Herrenhausen Gardens are Hannover’s most famous attraction
and have been a striking example of grand horticultural style
for more than 300 years. The centrepiece, the “Great Garden”,
is the most important baroque garden in Europe and is a
magnet for tourists from all over the world. Just like the ladies
and gentlemen of the court in centuries gone by, visitors today
can stroll around amidst opulently designed beds, splendid
sculptures and artistically clipped, illuminated hedges. Water
features can be heard babbling in hidden corners while the
Great Fountain rises to an impressive height of 70 metres.
Originally created by Electress Sophia as the “Grand Jardin de
la Leine”, the Great Garden is one of the few baroque parks
which has retained its basic structure until today.

Vivacità urbana e massimo rispetto per l’ambiente sono strettamente correlati nel capoluogo della
Bassa Sassonia. Hannover è effettivamente la città più verde della Germania, in quanto quasi
la metà dell’area cittadina è occupata da spazi verdi. Nel 2011 è stata premiata come “Capitale
federale della biodiversità”. Il premio prende il via da numerosi programmi d’azione accomunati
dal titolo “Più natura in città”. Complessivamente l’area cittadina conta ben 8.000 alberi da viale,
piantati oltre 20 anni fa. Solo il bosco cittadino Eilenriede, il “polmone verde” della città, copre
ben 642 ettari di superficie, risultando quindi quasi il doppio del Central Park di New York. Ma
non solo l’incontaminato bosco cittadino va annoverato tra i biotopi e le zone verdi ricreative
nelle immediate vicinanze della città. Il lago Maschsee è un vero Eldorado per gli amanti di sport
acquatici, jogging, skating o per chi preferisce semplicemente passeggiare. Nel cuore dell’area
urbana si trovano spazi verdi come l’Operndreieck o lo Stadtpark, un giardino unico nel suo
genere, paragonabile quasi ad un vero monumento. Molti hannoverani hanno trasformato in realtà
il sogno di un paradiso privato nel verde con un proprio orticello. Il capoluogo del Land conta ben
oltre 20.000 parcelle, ripartite in 270 colonie.

Già nel 2008 il capoluogo del Land ha realizzato un programma per la protezione del clima
assolutamente unico in tutta la Germania, con il nome Klima-Allianz Hannover 2020. L’obiettivo
consiste nel ridurre entro il 2020 le emissioni di CO 2 causate dai consumi di energia elettrica e
termica, abbattendole del 40 percento rispetto al 1990. L’ambizioso programma trova espressione ad esempio nel più grande complesso residenziale ad emissioni zero d’Europa, lo zero:e

around the lake afford fantastic panoramas. The Burgdorfer Land and Wedemark regions are a
