At number 247 on the exclusive rue Saint Honoré, behind the Art
Deco façade of a 1930s building, lies the new Mandarin Oriental hotel, the epitome of Parisian style. With its noble and precious materials, romantic decor and rich colors, the hotel exudes the atmosphere
of a bygone era. The space’s authentic luxury has been achieved by a
creative dream team: Jean-Michel Wilmotte supervised the renovation of the building, Sybille de Margerie of SM Design designed the
lobby, rooms, suites and spa, and Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku of
Jouin-Manku lent their talents to the bar and two restaurants.
“The goal of the renovation,” says Wilmotte, “was to transform this
office building into a highly prestigious hotel while preserving its assets, not only in terms of the architecture of the main building overlooking rue Saint Honoré, but also of its volume, with the top floors
offering sweeping views over Paris.” Wilmotte’s collaboration with
the landscape design agency Neveux-Rouyer for the garden design
also gave life to a vast inner courtyard viewable from the restaurants
and the shimmering glass lobby. Here, the glimmer effect is achieved
through the natural light that floods the space and the abounding
stones and precious materials like gray and ecru marble embedded

ristoranti.
“L’obiettivo della ristrutturazione - ci raccontano dallo studio Wilmotte - era di trasformare questo immobile di uffici in un hotel di
grande prestigio, preservandone gli atouts, non solamente per l’architettura del corpo principale affacciato su rue Saint Honoré, ma anche
per la sua volumetria che ai piani superiori offre la vista su tutta Parigi”. Grazie anche alla collaborazione dello studio Neveux-Rouyer per
la progettazione del giardino, lo studio Wilmotte ha inoltre creato
una grande corte centrale su cui si aprono i ristoranti e la sfavillante
hall vetrata. Sfavillante non solo per la luce naturale, ma anche per

On the opening page, the all-white Sur Mesure restaurant designed by Jouin-Manku
and furnishings by Italian companies Cassina and Erlacher. The architectural project
by Jean-Michel Wilmotte has completely redesigned the inner courtyard, which can
be seen from the glass lobby by Sybille de Margerie. De Margerie also designed the
interiors of the rooms and suites featuring dressing rooms and headboards custom
made by Interna Contract and Bag, Desir and Kimilla table lamps by Penta Light.
The ‘30s-inspired bathrooms boast freestanding tubs and mosaics by Trend
In apertura, il ristorante total white “Sur Mesure” disegnato da Jouin-Manku con
arredi delle italiane Cassina ed Erlacher. Il progetto architettonico di Jean-Michel
Wilmotte ha completamente riconfigurato la corte interna su cui si affiaccia la hall
vetrata di Sybille de Margerie che ha curato anche l’interior delle camere e delle suite
con dressing room e testiere del letto realizzati su misura da Interna Contract e luci
da tavolo Bag, Desir e Kimilla di Penta Light. Nei bagni, d’ispirazione anni ’30 con
vasca freestanding i mosaici sono di Trend
with malva and plum inlays. The rich color scheme is echoed in the
armchairs found throughout the lobby and the “Air” sculpture by
artist Nathalie Decoster, a symbol of fragile liberty, hanging on a
thread.
After this amuse-bouche, the taste of Sybille de Margerie pervades
the 99 rooms and 39 suites in a triumph of elegant materials and
decorations, with a dominance of mirrors, dark wood, pale lacquer,
chrome, cushions, silk and velvet in warm shades of gray, brown, orange, magenta, plum and coral. The bathrooms feature glass, wood,
white marble and mosaics, as well as freestanding bathtubs and wide
basin units enveloped in ridged leather and finished with bold, hammered bronze buttons. Offering her own twist on the luxury and
atmospheres of the 1930s, Sybille de Margerie has chosen to feature
reproductions, on velvet, of some of American photographer Man
Ray’s most iconic images, like The Kiss, which dresses the bed alcoves
of the rooms and suites.
The warm and powdery tones reappear in the two-level, 900-m2 spa.
A poetic world with nature-inspired motifs, stylized flowers on the
walls, colored glass alcoves, sofas and a white and carmine glass mosaic floor studded with butterflies in silver leaf.
A further contribution to the design of the hotel’s spaces is by Patrick
Jouin and Sanjit Manku, who designed the bar and restaurants
headed by chef Thierry Marx. The bar boasts warm shades of brown,
bronze-colored low tables with smoked glass tops, dark wood walls
inlaid with Lalique crystals and a monumental bar made out of a
nine-ton block of brown marble. The restaurants Sur Mesure and
Camélia both feature an all-white color palette that washes over the
upholsteries and furniture.

Dopo questo assaggio, il gusto di Sybille de Margerie pervade le
99 camere e 39 suite: un trionfo di materiali e decorazioni eleganti
come specchi, legno scuro, lacca sbiancata, dettagli cromati, cuscini,
sete e velluti nelle calde tonalità del grigio, marrone, arancio, fucsia,
prugna, magenta, corallo. Nei bagni dominano vetro, legno, marmo
bianco e mosaici, vasche freestanding, ampi lavandini che appoggiano su mobili rivestiti in pelle increspata con borchie di bronzo
battuto. Reinterpretando il lusso e le atmosfere anni ’30, Sybille de
Margerie ha scelto di riprodurre su velluto alcuni tra i più celebri
scatti del fotografo americano Man Ray come “Il bacio” che decora
le nicchie dei letti nelle camere e suite.
I toni caldi e polverosi tornano nella spa di 900 mq su due livelli: un
mondo poetico con motivi d’ispirazione naturale, fiori stilizzati alle
pareti, nicchie in vetro colorato con divanetti, pavimenti in mosaico
di vetro bianco e rosso costellato da farfalle in lamina d’argento.
Qui termina il compito dell’interior designer francese e il testimone
passa a Patrick Jouin e Sanjit Manku per il progetto del bar e dei
ristoranti diretti dallo chef Thierry Marx. Se il primo è dominato da
toni caldi del marrone, con tavolini color bronzo e piano in vetro
fumé, pareti in legno scuro intarsiato con cristalli di Lalique e un monolitico bancone bar costituito da un unico grande blocco di marmo
marrone di nove tonnellate, i ristoranti Sur Mesure e Camélia sono
accomunati dal bianco, quasi assoluto dei rivestimenti e degli arredi.
Tra atmosfere eteree, ovattate e vellutate, si compie il nostro flash
back nell’art de vivre anni ’30, in pieno stile parigino.

For Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater, the Venetian firm Rubelli has been working since 2007 to produce over 12,000 meters of damask, lampas, broccatelle, velvet and technical fabrics – all in Trevira CS
– to “dress” the stages, wall coverings and the stage curtain, or rather curtains, seeing that there are a total of three. Made up of two lengths of cloth that run on tracks, the “classic” stage curtain
alone (shown here) took more than a year and a half to complete. Precious silk lampas and gold yarn were used to create elements of Soviet iconography like the tsarist imperial eagle, Saint George
and the dragon and the word Russia, naturally in Cyrillic
