This book is dedicated to our parents who, with affection, comprehension and often through enormous sacrifices, gave us the possibility to study and follow our artistic inclinations despite the period of cultural obscurantism existing in Italy for some time now, but not only in Italy. This book is the result of a collective commitment by a group of students from the Fine Arts Academy of Urbino after selecting their group from among other Academy students they independently produced, not without some difficulties, this editorial project that is in its own way quite original. It’s made up of 23 sections, each including a conventional portrait or rather an image of the student that is at times an allegorical representation, naked in front of the camera lens. Then there are the reproduction of some of their latest art works and a passage where they narrate about themselves. The volume is therefore essentially a gallery of “portraits” of young artists where for the occasion each artist has photographically designed an image that is as close as possible to their current working process or rather, the inclinations, aptitudes and inspirations that they have been following in the past academic year. The particularity, that some might define as a mutation of paradigm in this kind of representation (the artist is photographed together with their artwork or at times while creating it), is that the artist is both artifice and performer in and of the artwork, following a certain contemporary art trend. As a professor of photography in the Academy I actively supervised and within my possibilities helped with the realization of the images, assuming various roles according to the necessity (which more often than not was as their driver). This often allowed me the pleasure of sharing the friendship and esteem of these students, but most of all the possibility of getting to know each one of them better. At the end of the shooting sessions, I can say with no fear of contradiction that each image reproduces faithfully not only the working environment and elected subject but, as well, the authors individual character. I would also like to add that the entire project realized by Katia Petrova also had a didactic and formative influence. In fact those who participated fully understood the necessary steps needed in passing from an idea to its realization as well as the attention that must be given to every detail and each aspect, beginning with the esthetics (obviously referring to the image and not the physical aspect of the body). As a consequence, I also believe it is worthy to note the results obtained given the limited time, resources and means that were at our disposal (even though the photography courses are among the most popular in the Academy, we do not have a photo lab or photo shoot studio but not even a photo camera or tripod for students use) and above all, considering the level of production of the large number of Academy students that often use photography and filming in an inappropriate way (may it be for a fad, convenience, laziness or ineptness; it seems to be easier to press a shutter button than to manage a paint brush or burin with skill) producing artistic performances that are disappointing as much as they are insignificant. Don’t cry Maddalena… The subtitle of this group project and the lyrics of “Adventure at Durango” by Fabrizio de Andrè opening the beginning of the text are not there casually. It was decided to adopt them as a metaphor of situations that students of our generation have to face and in particular those of us who work in the arts which as a consequence allows for even less chance for achieving the objectives set for themselves in order to realize their dreams. It seems as though we are walking across an emotional and cultural desert and we feel a sharp pain in our back… the reasons are the same in every time and place when culture under any form is considered dangerous and destabilizing. This becomes even more evident when the political ruling class is corrupt, whose only interest is in accumulating money for their personal benefit. We believe we are different, in a positive way, from the various political classes (regardless of the different official connotations they are almost always pursuing the same ends). We cannot identify with their attitudes that are arrogant, bullying, greedy, selfish, xenophobic, narrow-mindeded, chauvinistic, ignorant and all things worse that can come to minds of those reading this text. Narrowing the field to Italy we can no longer identify ourselves in the educational institutions that have been destroyed by this political system, for those professors who think that their main responsibility is to register the students presence for nonexistent lessons and in those complacent academic directors that do all but keep faith to their institutional responsibilities which is precisely to supervise and check the quality of teaching. Nevertheless, even if “we were never to see Durango again”, we will keep on going convinced, maybe a bit presumptuously, of the validity of our work and capabilities. This is the fruit of a shared endeavor by all of us that takes into consideration the allegorical representations of the work surroundings and the subjects that each one of us is particularly attracted to, to be half naked (all or almost all of us are near to completing their academic education), the importance of our individual differences that make us unique even physically, the reconsideration of esthetic function which for us continues to have a value (contrary to what many art critics, art dealers and art historians think and write about). This work can be ad considered, by those who observe it, as a artistic and cultural work (presumptuous), a cry for help (imploring), a cry of dignity (liberating), a provocation (contesting) and much more. Everyone is free to think whatever they please. For us it is just a way of having fun doing what we love to do, while being as serious and concrete as possible. However, we don’t want to pass for vulgar exhibitionists. Stripping in front of a camera is not easy, if you think the opposite try undressing in front of your colleagues at work. It takes courage especially if your body does not follow the typical cannons of beauty imposed by the mass media that aims at homologation through plastic surgery, silicone implants and hair transplants. We still think that diversity is fundamental source of beauty and in consequence we behave. Now, as expected a closing phrase is needed like “Enjoy the show” (predictable), “Peace and Love” (70’s), “The a revolution comes from the barrel of a gun” (Maoist) or “One must be strong without ever losing his/her sense of kindness” (a revolutionary). You can choose or think what you prefer, we’re fed up. Graduated in Graphic Arts at the University of Teheran. Post Graduate Specialization in Sculpture from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art for me is a shelter. When I was young I had a chance to get familiar with art, at least visually, as I would often spend time in my uncle’s library. Then I got my diploma in Graphic Arts and Advertising at the University of Tehran. Once in Italy I continued to study art but working with sculpture. Strictly speaking I didn’t really have a “maestro”, but I have a very vivid memory of an antiques merchant that I would visit every Friday who passed on to me his profound knowledge of music. It’s hard for me to explain which are the artist whom I would consider my reference point. Probably those who inspire me the most are those whose work I know less about or not know at all! I don’t know if I could say that I have something to communicate, more likely I try to make people of the aware of the things that they usually do not observe, things that might very easily pass in front of their eyes without leaving a trace. I really like to look around me, observe, explore with my eyes… For me a work of art is the vestige of a soul, like the imprint of a body that no longer exists. As strange as it might sound, I never really look out for my subjects, I’d like to believe that the subjects I get involved with are those who come to me unexpectedly: I’d rather wait and be chosen instead of choosing myself! Random occurrences have been part of my working process, but lately this is happening less and less. It’s often said that your art work speaks for you, but a don’t believe this is always true, often times art works only talk about themselves. Color, materials and physical spaces, are all visual elements to be used with parsimony, they must exist together in a discrete manner. Lately I’ve been entertaining the idea of working with motion, in short, I would like to produce a video. Looking for different tools is an important challenge, it means you need to start again from scratch, forget all you’ve learned so far and move on. Even though I studied and graduated in Italy as well, an experience that is deeply embedded in my mind is a rule I learned in the packaging sector of a factory: “never forget not to load the last box on the conveyor belt!”. Nevertheless it’s just this kind of thing that gave new impulse and directions to my artistic research. In each situation and in every job you must be willing to reach a compromise on one thing or another. In my case it was the “visa” problem: considering my country of origin, I had to live suspended between two completely different cultures and I soon learned that there doesn’t exist just one way of expressing oneself. To talk about figurative and abstract art as the only possible choices doesn’t make any sense. As far as the difficulties of being an artist today, I believe the answer is very much the same as it would have been for an artist in the past. Today many famous artists limit themselves to an idea or project, leaving the realization of the work to skilled craftsman. In the end these people “interpreted” the idea, translate the project into a physical object but at the same time often kill its poetic aura. The fact that peoples’ lives, that the world seems ever more arid does not mean that, as a consequence, art must therefore be as barren. Aridity does not necessarily lead to a non-space, but rather, a “different space”. We have to get used to these differences and learn how to handle them. New technologies come in handy at this point: they help art to become more and more interactive and art works relate to people in different ways, according to their different ways of viewing it. In the future I would really like to live without a project that conditions my dreams, to be able to dream freely without limits. When I decided to participate in this project I asked myself what meaning could be attributed to “naked” and I came up with the idea that to me it’s just some kind of a transparent boundary. Diploma in Decorative Monumental Painting from the Fine Arts Academy in Tirana, Albania. Post Graduate Specialization in Graphic Arts from Urbino Academy of fine Arts. Art makes my life interesting and fills me with emotions when I’m working but also because of the many, many people I meet. There was a moment, just after I arrived in Italy, that I wasn’t able to follow my plans as an artist and did other things for reasons I’ll leave to imagination, but every situation was like a fertilizer for my art which revolves around people. The men and the women that appear in my works are almost always difficult to place in a specific time because there is no background and that’s what interests me. What I want is for the observer to find their own dimension, using their imagination, for my figures. When I paint or draw it’s almost always a self-portrait, or better still in each form I see myself, it’s always me, even if I try to give the illusion that it has to do with someone else. I’m obsessed with human bodies and adore the art of painting. I love painting and in my works I’m ruthless with my body, with my eyes. I’m undisciplined by nature but never when I’m working. I don’t believe in improvisation, behind my works there is an enormous amount of hard work even though I absolutely do not necessarily attempt to communicate something. If they are cause for reflection or if someone finds them esthetically attractive both are fine with me as long as they bring out some kind of emotion. I strongly believe that art is an intertwinement of ethics and aesthetics. My inspiration is a bit of a hidden mystery. Sometimes I think that it comes to me in a particular moment, memory or situation, but later I realize that maybe its origins are completely the opposite of what I thought and that’s something that I get a kick out of. The artists from the past that I love and in which I’m very much connected to are many, but I must say that much credit must go to my recent encounters that have given an important input and new dimension to my work. If I must mention one artist name from the past I choose Egon Schiele. When I think of contemporary art it doesn’t matter whether it’s a painting, a video or a photograph, I’m effected and interested in the works of artists with an innovative eye that is above all true to the world. I say true, not sincere. I’m very curious about video art and I would like to work in that direction in the future. I must add that among my interests literature is very, very important as are animals, which could hardly be different seeing that I have been living 18 long years with my dog, or rather my poodle. Something that I cannot tolerate is when self-importance degenerates into arrogance; indifference is another thing that really bothers me. I would describe myself as a person with a strong personality and have a great sense of self irony; I’m playful and direct, I’m proud of the fact that I have never stopped believing in figurative painting. A reoccurring thought that often comes to me was expressed by Antione de Sant – Exupèry: “There is only one true luxury and that is the luxury of human relationships”. 69 The Conversation Languished, 2010 dittico, disegno a penna, 30x42 cm 70 71 Anna Benedini, 10.05.1984, Vicenza, Italia Diploma al Liceo Artistico, diploma in Pittura, specializzazione in Grafica d'Arte all’Accademia di Belle arti di Urbino. Diploma from the High School of Artistic Studies, Diploma in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Post Graduate Specialization in Graphic Arts from Urbino Academy of fine Arts. Art is a moral duty, it gives you a chance to grow and emerge from the ever increasing cultural swamp. Due to my original humanistic background I’m now very interested in the “scientific methods” and their possible applications in art. That’s why I love Leonardo da Vinci. Looking around me, I would have to say that I find Fabio Mauri and Christian Boltansky extremely intriguing, the first because of his capacity to navigate though many different expressive languages, the other because of his ethic concerns and his deep respect for human dignity and his sensitivity towards harsh issues. My images are not meant to be pleasant, they’re supposed to stimulate the observer to question their relationship with others in respect to the models proposed by society and mass media. Quite often I get inspired by mug shots because I find them so self evi- dent that they don’t need any further manipulation. Mug shots present people as the criminal, the victim, guilty or innocent. This is my starting point, random coincidence is decisive only at the beginning of my working process, it then disappears at the next phase, when it comes to the final material assembling. Obviously my work deals with other peoples experiences and is absolutely not in reference to myself. Materials and techniques should be consistent with the content of my work, therefore I don’t see limits in that sense, it all depends on the initial subject matter. So far I utilized conventional techniques but in the future I would like to use digital technology and computer graphics, which I believe, would certainly enhance the quality of my work. For me compromising at the creative phase of my work is like losing total control of my creation. Even though I’m more of a figurative artist, I don’t feel that I could possibly say that this is the only way to work, which often becomes an exhibition of a “virtuoso” technique. I’m also very interested in abstract art when supported by theoretical and technological research. Unfortunately I believe that so far this kind of contemporary and parallel research seems to have produced little results so far in Italy. I don’t think that it’s our extraordinary artistic past glory that is preventing our generation from becoming good artists, I’d rather believe it’s a matter of not understanding in contemporary terms, seeing our art history as a heavy and boring burden rather than a starting point. There’s nothing wrong for an artist to work with skilled craftsman in order to produce good artworks: the important part of the creative process is the original idea and it shouldn’t be jeopardize by technical inabilities. Ours is potentially one of the best times for offering new possibilities not only for an artist but also in general all human thought. Technological innovations in the field of communication created a great number of possible choices and we are still not fully unaware of their global revolutionary impact. Momentary trends, irresponsible superficiality and the uncertainty of the art market are always the worst enemies for a young artist. I don’t believe that our present world is totally “arid” and I’m very fascinated by different and various cultures, both in the younger and older generations, that we encounter in our everyday experience. The search for identity of the adolescent, creating a world of their own imagination, might be more than an illusion, it might be the next part of my research. This time I decided to exchange places with my mug shot subjects attempting to identify myself with them. Diploma from Classic Studies High School, Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art represents all beautiful things created by love and passion; the most important masterpieces can be found in the natural world, nature is the greatest master of all! I learned a lot from my family, my friends and some teachers. I’ve always been interested in Mesopotamic and Islamic Art, even though Bizantine and Medioeval Art probably have had a greater influence in my creative process. German Expressionism is important to me for the power of its colors and Romanticism for its contents. A little bit of everything. Getting down to the details, I’m very attracted by Marina Abramovich’s elegant forwardness and the courage of Louise Bourgeois in exhibiting her intimacy in her works. The most important inspiration for my work is my life, or rather, what lies beneath the surface, the secrets that surround and protect it. To the viewer I would always like to communicate sensations that I’m sure they are already familiar with, those of a primordial kind. My themes are always the same: Origins, circular forms, nests and home, even though I don’t think that I really have a preferred subject matter. For the most part I use symbols which help me communicate and unify. Mine is more of a intermediary role, rather than an creator, therefore I don’t want to talk about the will to do things or about random decisions when a refer to my work. Color, materials and space are very relevant elements and each one of them communicate something. Space is the element that I have not yet explored but which I find more and more fascinating. I would love to experiment with performances. I would like to work with different media, like music and dance, even though I will always consider drawing the base of my creativity, my diary. I believe that if an artist is clever and lucky he/she will never be put in a position where they are forced to give up anything for their art. In general I feel more attracted to abstract art, maybe it’s a question of a sense of freedom it offers. Yet I also believe this question is pretty much obsolete, anyway it’s not even something I consider. I find it difficult to think that a rich artistic heritage such as ours might make it more difficult for us to be contemporary artists, it should be the opposite. I think that it’s our present culture values and ideologies that are weak and tend towards ignorance, making it difficult for anyone to express themselves in a true and profound way. If a skilled craftsman can help an artist with his creative process, then why not. After all it was quite normal to do so in the past with most of the greatest artists. Maybe it would be a good idea to find a fair solution as far as what the economic value that such a contribution by a craftsman should be. Art always existed and will continue to exist in the future. It may come to have a different meaning, but it will never disappear for the simple fact that it goes beyond the meaning of being human. Sometimes I’m afraid I might find something better for me than being an artist. I’m a very sociable person and I like to share my experiences with others, especially when they’re positive. My dreams are almost visions, my projects instead, sometimes seem like cheese with an expiration date. Diploma from Classic Studies High School and B.A. and "Licentia Docendi" at the Faculty of Theology, Bologna University, Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art is a beautiful “place to live in”. After elementary school I studied 17 years of Seminary Studies in Rimini and Bologna and became a Theology Professor and “nearly” a priest. In all those years I was never influenced by any of my teachers. I love Donatello, Michelangelo, Raffaello and Leonardo. I never think about a viewer except myself: I always feel the need to create something beautiful which has a lot to do with my identity. At the moment I would describe the way I feel with these words: “I’m very busy with myself ”. I’m addicted to self-portrait. In all my works I love to portray myself as an actor, little David, then Goliath, Giordano Bruno on the stake, Ulysses on the beach… Things might change in the process, as new ideas come along, but everything is always thought about carefully and carried out in minimal detail. Colors, materials and space are only instruments I use in the same respect as a carpenter would use his hammer. I would like to make my art works in big dimensions working towards works that are larger all the time, apart from the techniques; even though my real dream is to create a fresco cycle. Working on commission means you would have to renounce most of your dreams. However a job without the economic factor would not be a real job and you wouldn’t be a good citizen. Obviously these parameters are valid only when money is just a part of the deal and not the whole thing! When I think about figurative and abstract art in terms of contemporary art I believe it is a false issue. In the last century both abstract and figurative artists used and enjoyed art as a language as poets used and enjoyed their words, this was their only rule, which means they didn’t have any rules. This immense “poetic license” unifies both figurative and abstract art. There’s another course which I define “narrative painting” and it’s the point where you can really notice artistic separation. In Italy art history might have influenced - to some extent – its taste for beauty, but I think this only applies to a certain mediocrity. I’d like to point out that Italy, as of today, is tied up and characterized by a diffused speculative bourgeois mentality and doesn’t put art among its primary concerns. Artists who rely on craftsmen to produce their artwork miss out on the best part of the deal! There’s a way making art where craftsmanship is not considered, the essence of the profession: if one day Cattelan decided to begin producing his works by himself it wouldn’t have anything to do with understanding the way Cattelan creates. I think is his art is perfect as it is. In my case among the arts, I choose painting which is a fine art as well as a nice profession. What frightens me is the gap between the art of the artists and the people that art should be made for. Today, the visual art that has the most influence on people is cinema. Art like painting is isolated, its internal conflicts is a ridiculous war among the poor, its influence on the world is zero. Of course art will have a future, not art as it is today which doesn’t even have a present. New movements not only have new spaces, they have entire plains. I’m happy to have a pretty good idea of where I’m going, my only fear is that I might not make it, missing Noah’s Ark and find myself alone. Group success? Fabrizio De André in one of his songs says “ This thought doesn’t console us, when you die, you die alone”. My dream is to live with my art and be able to do it all my life and live it in a way that artists used to, when it was a trade and people had a need of this kind of trade. I dedicate myself to paintings commissions, I think it’s a good compromise between my creative surge, answering to actual requests and keeping my feet on the ground. I realized I had to be a painter while I was in the seminar, after many intense meditations, when I had written a lot and thought even more, I found the best way to fix an idea and my thoughts was to do a drawing. This was the only way that I found that I could truly express my thoughts. Not only that, drawing helped me keep my ideas alive and vivid. It was only then that I would finally feel a sense of accomplishment. Quindi a volte l’artista fa bene a rivolgersi a lui. Diploma from the Galileo High School of Science, Diploma in Scenography from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. I never had a “maestro” who taught me how to draw or try to direct me in any particular way of working, even though looking at different styles and artists forced me to look at details to improve my technique. What’s influenced and fascinated me the most, I believe was and still is African art. I’m fascinated by the vision and the representation of forms that native artists have when they deal with nature. As well, I’m also attracted to quite a few of the avant-garde artists, in particular those who worked with land art and as well as some great artists from the past such as Goya, Toulouse-Lautrec and the Flemish Masters. Art tells you a story, a situation, a single gesture or even the whole process of making art, and it’s for these reasons that I find art stimulating culturally, for curiosity and imagination, for the relationship between artists themselves and with other people as well as with nature. I believe art moves the mind and leads us to new images, thoughts and opinions. Art is often a release, sometimes not intending to communicate anything in particular. Often in my works I like to tell stories that seem imaginary even though they have a definite realistic background. Everything must always be analyzed from different angles and this is the reason why in most of my drawings, scenographies and other works there’s usually a sense of both irony and restlessness. I find people and the different situations they may encounter curious and fun, so I represent them in connection to parallel worlds with their own logic, as in a play where even a magic world is forced to respect natural laws. In my works there’s always a lot of random moments, both mental and physical. Nothing ever comes out of nothing, often it’s the materials, shapes, images, spaces or small details that give me the ideas or new paths to follow. I don’t want to tell the story of my life, even though indirectly I do, because your work is always part of yourself. There are several materials and techniques that I’ve never used and I would like to try, like oil painting in order to understand its potentiality. I have the same feeling towards glass, a very fascinating material, especially if you consider the moment it’s cast. Sometimes artists are forced to accept aesthetic tastes and subject matter that they don’t particularly care for. That said, I don’t mean an artist risks losing his identity, because his hand and style will always be unaltered and visible, but it seem at times like he’s being deprived of his natural inspiration and creativity. When working in theatre you have to deal with material costs and the director’s needs, which you obviously have to take into account. Even though figurative and abstract art look like two completely different languages, I believe that in a way even figurative art is always a process of abstraction from reality, therefore the coexistence of the two in a work of art is certainly possible and valuable. Today is difficult to be an artist, not because of our extremely rich past, but rather because of our very communicative present. You cannot compare the Italy’s artistic past with its present situation simply because of the art market has changed as is the way of producing art has changed. Standard criteria for communication or telling stories don’t exist anymore, there are many more ways to do it, even though not everybody is capable of doing it. Ponty says: “…the artist presents his work as a man once presented his first word, not knowing whether this word will be something other than just a sound…”. This is the problem but I have faith in the future of art. Increased communication, as I mentioned before, can be positive for the exchange of ideas and the possible collaborations that come along with it. Sometimes an idea is more important than the final artwork, other times you can’t express an idea without the help of a skilled craftsman in order to bring into being the final product. I believe that anybody can create something, but only a technically skilled person can do it right. Sometimes an artist with poor technical skills is right in hiring a good craftsman to do the job. Sometimes you have to fail before you reach success and this applies to whether you work by yourself or as a team. Diploma from The Ancona State Istitute of Arts. Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art is my great love. Did I have “maestri”? My mother, Giorgio Cardile (my oldest friend who took care of me since I was a child, both in my everyday life but also helping me to develop the artistic consciousness I had but couldn’t see), Marco Vitangeli and Marco Montenovi (with whom in the beginning I used to argue a lot because I was too immature to listen) and all the others that I’ve met these last few years and to whom I thank for all their patience (they really had a to have a lot with me). The artists I love the most are Mozart, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Kandjnsky, Cai Guo-qiang, Fontana, Kunellis, Delacroix, Rotcho, Gino De Dominicis, Choen, Mondrian, Barzag, Caravaggio, Giacomo Pesaresi (a musician friend), Mannucci, Wright, Burri, Cristò, Gaudì, Leonardo, Archimede, Pasolini, Bene, Kubrik, Arman, Debussy… What I would like to pass on to other people is the spirit that transports me when I work thinking about nature, questioning space and time. This is why my ideal subject is or rather I would like it to be the universe; my works don’t talk about my life but, at least my intentions are to talk, about life. The way to use the instruments available to depends on the kind of job you plan to do. There are a lot of subjects (and techniques) I haven’t dealt with yet but I would like to. What do I think about the artists who use the skill of craftsmen to realize their work? I think it’s a very marvelous relationship. No doubt an artist may go through many difficulties, live through many trials but before him there’s an infinite space, a dimension in which there is no space for failure but only the belief that one has failed. Ho cominciato a interessarmi seriamente all'arte solo da pochi anni. Graduated at Catania State Institute of Arts, Diploma in Decoration. Post Graduate Specialization in Sculpture from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art is the possibility to run away, to escape, go wherever I want and make jump into a fantastic world. Art is both wonderful and terrible at the same time and it saved me from boredom. I started being interested in art only a few years ago. I always considered artists so far away from real life and in school they taught me that after Picasso and Cezanne there were no more great artists. You had to look at art as something unreachable and mysterious. In time I realized that art was not so far away from life as they wanted me to believe and I understood that being an artist meant to re-write life through images. I think I’ve been influenced by many many things, by the people I love, by movies that I’ve seen, by books and by some trips I took. About life in general: I love Francis bacon. Reading about his life and looking at his work I understood lots of things and, more than anything, My works are usually very intimate, hard, aggressive and gloomy, but I don’t consider aggressiveness in art as something negative. As Michel Leiris would say: “A despairing poem is never desperate.” Listening to the Requiem by Mozart doesn’t make you feel transfigured by his subliminal music, even though the theme is ominous. But many artists have been accused of producing violent and depressing art work like for example the same Bacon. Maybe the closer an artwork is to life the more it appears aggressive to us. My works might not look reassuring, but that’s not my problem. I’m inspired by anything that interests me and in this respect the world is an inexhaustible resource. I believe that human experience in a contemporary context is the primary source for any artist. I always confronted themes dealing with the human body in a very personal and intimate manner. Yes, the body with its different possibilities and negations, a body as a crucifix, a body in pain, the body as purifying food, the body as food and therefore, the body as content and container; the body that dies, the body in search of immortality through beauty. Sometimes an idea can change in the process, sculpture is full of unpredictable accidents and that may very well generate some very interesting situations. Despite this, while working on a project I always try and stick to the original idea as much as possible. There are so many different techniques that I never experienced and I would like, sooner or later, to attempt. Obviously there are so many subjects and themes that I would hope to be able try but maybe I will never get the chance. I believe the most important thing is to learn as much as possible and accumulate experience. It’s a continuous, everyday challenge and I believe the fascinating part in an artist’s work is not so much the final result but the long voyage to get there, a passage filled with errors, research and more journeys. The most important artwork for many artists has been their own life itself. Abstract and figurative art are of a similar relationship as novels are to poetry, they’re only two different ways to tell a story and coherence doesn’t exist in art. In Italy in the last few years we’ve had some important artistic movements, even on an international level, but nevertheless our cultural system seems to valorize and promote almost exclusively the art of our past. In this country the artist is considered something marginal, obscured by the people in power, by advertising, by fashion and our history itself. To be an artist in Italy is difficult. The artist is a thinker and art shouldn’t have limitations. There are artist who have ideas but are not good craftsmen and fine craftsmen who are not good at ideas. It certainly isn’t a problem if the first relay on the second and vice versa, even though now I personally believe that the processes of working from projecting to the actual construction of an art work is essential for me. So many artistic movements and some of the greatest art works were originated in periods of profound crisis. Art is always on the move, despite the fact that the world is or is not arid. Art creates its own space and artists were never as free as they are today. It is important to have a dream and be determined to do what we like to do without any compromise. I feel isolated in Italy, I’m not at ease. That’s why I would like to travel and try living in a different country. Diploma from the Institute of Visual Arts, Degree in Decoration from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art is a way to communicate and it’s also a safety valve. I had an interest in it since I was child, I loved to paint kid’s albums with colors and I later began to have a deeper interest thanks to an art professor in high school. I was a poor student in most of the courses except for the Art History class. I had to work with a computer and I didn’t like it. In the beginning it was just a hobby then I realized I couldn’t work without it. The “masters” who mostly influenced me are Modigliani, Julian Snhabel, John Lennon, then abstract neo expressionism, informal art, arte povera, transavanguardia, blues and jazz music. My works don’t talk about me and my inspiration comes from television. Essentially I try to communicate two basic things: life is cynical and we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. Walls are my preferred subjects. In my works, even though it doesn’t seem like it at first there’s actually very little unpredictability ; I need to have full control of the whole creative process in all its phases. If I realize that chance is playing a role in the process, I’m not satisfied, even though in the end we’re only mediators. From a technical point of view everything is important, both the colors and the materials. In particular I find materials to be absolutely fundamental; as a matter of fact, in the future I would like to deal with sculpture. I love to get dirty, I can’t stand those people who are afraid to get dirty. When you get dirty you fully understand the materials you’re dealing with. In the end, if you’re sweaty and dirty that means you’ve really worked. Physical contact with materials is fundamental. For sure money helps, we all need it, it’s a necessary ploy. At the moment I don’t really need money, painting is not so expensive. I would like to have lot of money to build some architecture, I often think about some hot air balloons made out of glass, but this is altogether another story. What is figurative art? The painting of a photograph. I don’t believe in figurative art. I don’t see anything behind it except techni- cal skills, it doesn’t give me any emotions. I have the feeling that right now in Italy everything is so damn difficult. As far as I’m concerned, for the things that I would like to do, maybe I would be better off in Germany or in England, there seems to more room out there for an Artist. I haven’t been able to find them here yet, even though I might be wrong. Maybe in Prato or Rivoli there’s some room for informal art or abstract impressionism. Artist who use craftsman do the right thing, I would do it myself if I had the money. If I don’t know how to do something and they do, why not! The important thing is that the idea is mine. The craftsman is like a brush that I can use to paint. Art feeds on the aridity in its surroundings and, given the situation, I believe that new currents will have ample space to express themselves. Often it’s arid situations in life that offer new opportunities of expression, in my case it was Palestine. Art is like a woman when you don’t take care for her, when you do not consider her, she can perceive it. Sometimes you feel like shit, you’re mad at yourself , you could have done something but you didn’t do it. You don’t just feel guilty with yourself, you feel ashamed in front of her. It’s better to fail by yourself than be successful as a group. My biggest dream is to lead an armed revolution that would bring justice and peace to the world. In my opinion a revolution can only be armed, not like Gandhi’s revolution. Being it’s not something that I can obviously do, I try and do it with my art. I sometimes think that this is a better way to get into people’s minds without using violence. I would like for someone to ask me: was it worth doing it? My answer would be: I don’t know. 97 Particolari di Milk for all, 2010 tecnica mista su carta, 340x250 cm 98 99 Katina Petrova , 05.08.78, Pernik, Bulgaria. Diploma from High School of Visual Arts in Bulgaria, Degree in Painting and Post Graduate Specialization in Graphic Arts from Urbino Academy of fine Arts. The idea of this project initiated when I started thinking about what I would do for my post graduate thesis. Working with the human nude has always been one of my main interests but it was always difficult for to find willing models. I started thinking about my fellow students and the need for cultural visibility that we all share. I decided to portray my friends naked within a scene that would describe their character and their working environment. I asked each of them to create a specific project and to work with me in order to produce an image that would best represent them and their artistic nature; I felt this would make sense both collectively and individually. I found it interesting to go beyond the simple portrait and, at the same time it seemed like this would be a way of respecting everyone’s artistic dignity. Art came upon me quite accidentally. I came to Italy to change my life. I ended up living in a small provincial town, among fairly well-off people, hard workers but definitely rough and narrow minded. I was missing a cultural dimension and so I decided to go back to school. When I was a kid I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents’ home while my parents were at work. Near their house there were lots of artists’ studios where some of them worked for both the government’s propaganda campaigns as well as for their own personal creativity and I could always smell the mineral spirits and turpentine. I thought it was a wonderful scent and when I used to visit them I was fascinated by their world. I never had “maestri” in the true sense of the word, but my teachers certainly pushed me in this direction. When I signed up at the Fine Arts Academy I met a photography professor who opened my eyes to the world and stimulated me to cultivate substantial values instead of mere appearances. I’m often attracted by completely opposite artistic viewpoints. One thing is what you’d like to express, another is what people perceive. Everything I do depends on random chance and inspiration and I don’t ever make direct references to myself. Every compromise, especially economic, usually debases people and their work, but sometimes this can be positive. For example a commission can be useful because it sets limits to your “hunting grounds” making your area of research easier because you know in what direction you should move. In my opinion the ability of a professional artist can be better judged by how well he/she can satisfy a customer. The Renaissance is something you can’t help but take it into account, but this is an obvious concern for both Italian and foreign artists. It’s only a cultural matter. To be an artist has always been difficult in all times and in any country. It’s not sufficient to be good, you also have to be very tenacious and lucky. More than anything, I would say that in Italy everything is getting more difficult because of the economic situation. Here, more than in other countries, the first budget cuts have been made, as usual, in all areas concerning culture. There’s no doubt that the most important part of an artistic project is the idea behind it, but the way it’s constructed is also very important. An artist who is not capable of dealing with both of these aspects wouldn’t be a complete artist. Art has always existed since the very beginning of mankind, even though some works have been considered “art” only at later times. Obviously there are historical periods that, in this respect, are richer than others. It all depends, not so much on the artists themselves, but on what surrounds them and the times that they happen to live in. I have the feeling that right now it’s like in the Middle Ages, a period of absolute obscurantism. To fail, individually or as a part of a group is always sad. As a group it’s always easier to lick your wounds. In this respect I feel a kind of a rising selfishness caused by a “fight for survival” and by a cultural trend which always places the individual, rather than the group at the center of everything. This is the opposite of all the great revolutionary movements such as the Bauhaus. In this period is even difficult to “have a dream”, but for sure I believe that it’s not possible to be happy being alone. Diploma from Peking Normal School, post graduate studies in Painting at Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. People don’t just live in order to live and get dressed, they also live in order to satisfy themselves and have some pleasures. Life is art and everybody can create his own. When I was in Beijing I had a didactics professor and during his classes we used to discuss art. I learned a lot from his lessons, not just from a technical or theoretical point of view, I learned about life and how to think about the world. He insisted that young people should travel and read thousands of books. He would also suggest that they should travel a lot. In China we have an old proverb that says “travelling for thousands of miles is like reading thousands of books”. This is why I traveled a lot in these last two years. The art I love the most is conceptual art, John Baldessari in particular. When people look at my work, I’d like to communicate to them that: When people only desire material things in life they may become rich and have social status but they’ll soon get tired of life and then they’ll be very unhappy. In the end it is much more important to satisfy spiritual needs more than material ones. In my works there’s always a person seen from the back, with his shadow, a long shadow that for me represent the conflicting feelings of my nature. They tell about me, but more than anything they reveal my opinion about people, we all have something hidden behind the surface. At the moment I paint, but in the future I would like to make installations, I’d like to create something that says something against war but I still need to think more about this topic and I need to learn more on a mechanical level of how to work with an installation. Living in Italy helped me to think a lot about the kind of life I would like for myself. As I mentioned before, life in itself is already an art and in the future I would like to open a restaurant with an interesting atmosphere, an “artistic” restaurant. It would certainly be an attraction for people and I would solve my economic problems and be an artist at the same time. I love beauty, figurative art is as beautiful as abstract art. I believe in Italy there are still opportunities to become famous and rich, there are a lot of public concourses for young artists. Obviously you have to be very good and lucky at the same time. Ai Weiwei recently made an artwork made out of millions and millions of ceramic sunflower seeds, without the help of many craftsmen he would never have been able to do it. Many people point to an object and jokingly say “Look, this is art”! If the object means something, then it’s art. If it doesn’t make any sense, could we still call it art? At this point the situation becomes interesting: art is not only a pleasant activity for the artist, it’s also a performance for the public. To make art is absolutely subjective and this is why I always like to work by myself. I don’t have great dreams, I would be happy with a restaurant or a store, live happily with my family and help people who need it. I would also love a peaceful world. Puntare all’essenziale sarebbe un buon inizio. Certified Surveyor, diploma in Interior Architectural Design from the Pescara European University of Design, Post Graduate Specialization in Scenography at Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. I live my life and art is part of it, I don’t consider them two separate things. I will keep doing it even if I have to choose a job completely different from art. Since I was very young child I knew this would be my choice and following my father in his job I learned how things were built and what makes them work. He passed onto me his manual skills and the subtle fascination of invention and creativity. I started by building my own toys, polishing small pieces of wood to turn them into little bricks, mixing clay to build a street for my little automobiles. I realized there were two kinds of “maestro”. The first were simple people; craftsmen, blacksmiths, carpenters, masons and metal workers, people devoted to work, stubborn and pragmatic. The others were those who worked on ideas, those who can teach you about articulating your thoughts and shaping them into forms. Among these I can’t really say which inspired me the most, even though I’m grateful to many architects, poets and musicians. I always try to limit random situations by planning everything in the best possible way because I want to avoid any possibility for mistakes and that’s right where my creative work begins. I have the ambition of becoming a scenographer and I hope that in my scenes people might recognize the life of the famous people involved, Hamlet, Antigone, Medea or Don Juan. I try to present these heroes and myths as best as I can. A scenographer must be able to use to the best of his ability all that he has at his employ, beginning with the structures on scene to the “skin” effects of a mask made out of different colors and materials. Space is like a beating heart in continuous movement, everything rotates around it. I love to confront myself with things I don’t know how to handle because I believe that is the moment I can really experiment the most. The true value of a work is in the idea, in the project, it doesn’t really matter who physically produces it. Today is very difficult to be competent enough to confront all the various new working materials on the market. I prefer to employ specialists in the field, at least for advice. I never had a chance to confront myself with big staging experiences or out of the ordinary productions. Instead, I had to confront with the necessity of dealing with very limited budgets. When you have very little money your intelligence and imagination are more likely to surface and in the end, compromises are unavoidable. Usually I start thinking about what I have to do and only after about the amount of money I can spend. Alphonse Allais, a famous French comedian wrote “money helps to maintain poverty” but today the real poverty is in the lack of ideas and money doesn’t help to generate ideas. I believe that working in Italy is very difficult for any artist for many reasons. Whether you may consider it a political/economic problem or a social/cultural one the results won’t change. In both cases people involved are afraid of art because it shakes their consciousness. It makes me glad to think that art and theatre are supported by people who regen- erate themselves, shrewd, open to anything just to support a point of view, a different idea. Today we live in the middle of a transition period, rather confused, more than arid. I conceive my contemporary world as a wreckage yet to come which will, in the end, intercept the correct trajectories excluding in the end all the background noise. Aiming for the essentials would be a good beginning. Diploma from the High School of Science, Degree and Post Graduate Specialization in Scenography at Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. What I believe is fundamental in life is a means of communication that is both universal and at the same time subjective. In my last years in high school I had a chance to get in touch with theatre and I decided to enroll the scenography class. I’m really fascinated by the twentieth century “avant-garde” movement when artists focused their attention on new fields of research such as fashion. My inspiration comes from both everyday experiences and art history. Analyzing a movie or just giving a quick glance through a magazine often becomes an important part of my search for an idea. I usually don’t have preference in subjects, it just depends on what I have in my mind at the moment and the sort of public I intend to present my work to. For sure some ideas in the very beginning might be motivated by pure chance. Then later I organize my ideas in a more definite way, but I never hesitate to change direction in case a new proposal comes to my mind. Each character has his own story but I obviously tend to get closer to those with whom I share common interests. Having to deal with a limited budget, artists are usually forced to make choices and accept compromises, such as choosing cheaper materials to work with. Even though abstract art is usually considered to be the result of an artist’s experience and therefore made from subjective and unrecognizable shapes and forms, I believe abstraction might very well coexist with figurative art because each artist has his own personality but his experiences, most of the time stem from reality. Working in Italy is not so easy, especially because of the immense artistic heritage which contributed to the development of contemporary art and, at the same time, continues to influence our culture and leaves little spaces for contemporary initiatives. An artist should be free in order to give the best in his creative projects. If he doesn’t have the practical ability to produce appropriate results he should start working with craftsmen who have the proper skills. Contemporary society, despite its cultural and economic state, sometimes is not ready to understand art in all its forms, even though we still have a lot of people who are interested in art. Artists often represent a different kind world and cultural exchange and new common experiences are still possible. Today’s media are better and more wide-spread than in the past. I have always participated in group activities, we shared assignments according to our different skills and I believe this is the best way I like working. I try to keep going learning as much as I can from people who have more experience than me. 113 Bozzetti per i costumi de Il sonno di Magbeth, 2008 tecnica mista, 21x29,7 cm Spettacolo teatrale Il sonno di Magbeth, 2008 costume di scena lady Magbeth, tecnica sartoriale 114 Spettacolo teatrale Il sonno di Magbeth, 2008 costume di sena lady Magbeth, tecnica sartoriale 115 Moritz Brunner, 01.07.1983, Nova Ponente, Italia Diploma all’Istituto d'Arte, diploma di Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, specializzazione in Pittura a Brera, Milano. Diploma from the Institute of Visual Arts, Degree in Painting from Urbino Fine Arts Academy. Post Graduate Specialization in Painting at Brera Fine Arts Academy, Milan. The months I spent in Spain are those which definitely influenced me a lot, especially when I was on the Sierra Nevada and in Granada, where I met some very outstanding "maestri". I then decided to enroll in the Academy of Art in Urbino and here I met people who really gave me a lot and made me understand the importance of contents in art. I'm also very attracted by different philosophies, mainly Arab and Oriental. I love "graffiti" art (beginning with prehistoric period), the Dadaist movement, street art, land art, "arte povera", Beuys, Fluxus, viennese Action Painters and Body Art. Among the artists who have or still do animate this world I would like to mention Goya, Banksy, Mario Merz, Penone, Cage, Paik, Goldsworthy, Rauschneberg, Kiefer, Kurosawa, Abramovic, Nauman, Holzer, KRS One, Cattelan, Laib, LaoTze and Bob Marley. I always thought very little of the commercial side of life and I feel the same about commercial art. I reached the conclusion that in this century art is an indivisible part of life and also there are two sides of the same coin. You have a problem when only commercial aspect is considered. Obviously you need to make money in some way in order to survive, and if not from your work it will be from your time. It's very important to figure out what you want to do and once you discover it you should carry it out with all possible commitment. At this point money problems usually resolve themselves. Talking about my work is difficult, I don't even try to describe it because at the moment it doesn't really exist. At the moment they're a mosaic of heterogeneous works, mostly made for my exams at the Academy and not for my own aspirations. So far I have not been able to truly dedicate my time to art, my work was done in a very superficial and hasty manner. I can't wait to start working more seriously, and this is a decision I made only recently. Only at that point will make any sense to discuss my work. We need to overcome the need to make a distinction between figurative and abstract art. All that matters is quality and expressive power. Working as an artist is not more difficult in Italy than in other countries, even though Italy's past history sometimes makes it harder to be up to date with new artistic concepts. Unfortunately in Italy many students, and even teachers and artists, keep supporting a concept of art that’s at least 400 years old. If there's a part of your creative process that would be done better by someone else, why not? It's useless to waste time, risk your health and get results which are definitely lower in quality compared to those offered by skilled craftsmen and in less the time. I don't worry about the end of art before the end of mankind. It's always been a part man as are water and food. Success is always important even when it's collective success, as long as everybody can maintain his dignity in the creative process. Right now I want to finish my studies, then I will dedicate my time in order to be able to carry on with my art. I would also like to keep working on my farm with my plants and animals. I'm an easy person to please because I know you don't need too much to live happily, what's most important is to find your way even though sometimes it might be a steep or difficult road to find. Diploma from the Experimental Technical Institute of Graphics; Diploma and Post Graduate Specialization in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. I have an experimental background that gave me a general idea of art. I consider it a very good experience which stimulated me in many different directions and it’s a real pity that the new government reform will change that going back to sterile times in education, probably because they consider it too experimental for their conservative tastes. Among those that I would consider my “maestri” I can only think of a couple, they’re quite rare. It’s difficult to talk about influences because they’re quite unstable and my inspirations change with time. When you go through changes you perceive different aspects of art and nuances in artists that you didn’t notice before. When I first came to the Academy I didn’t know anything about contemporary art, a total blank! My knowledge and models went back to movements from the 19th and early 20th centuries, Preraphaellites and Bauhaus, from Mucha to Waterhouse and the artists of the Viennese Secession. Now, if I had to choose a name I would say Louise Burgeois. I hope when people who look at my work they can sense my intention for truth. I also hope that observers won’t question my meanings, but perceive them all the same. When you spend too much time talking about an art work that obviously means the piece doesn’t communicate what it should. I always deal with themes related to nature, from anatomy to hunting scenes. Nature is strong and sincere and we are so far and remote from its laws that we often consider it cruel and try to bend it to our desires. We are very superficial. I love many subjects, but wild animals are those that stimulate me the most. Some people likes to plan everything in advance, for me working at random is important, even though I prefer to think in terms of instinct and curiosity more than chance. All art works, even the most insignificant, talk about the artist’s life because they’re full of it, but only those who know the author well, can fully appreciate this aspect. The economic side of art is pervasive and in many cases it influences the artist’s research. To be an artist is difficult in general. Italy is an extremely beautiful country and if sometimes its rich and overwhelming past seems to sort of limit its present creativity, it certainly isn’t the fault of the past but just the limited horizons of our contemporaries. It would be a good beginning if people would do something to maintain this important historical patrimony. We are all tied up to our past and yet we don’t seem to care enough about it. If we didn’t have good craftsmen as a support to our contemporary artists we would be submerged by “crap” art. In the future, when the time comes, new movements will appear. The interaction between artists will not end and the aridity of this world can’t effect everyone. If for the “art world” we only intend the art system or its market then the corruption is evident, but I have faith. This trend can’t last forever, some alternatives, in the sense of a genuine and strong answers to the problem will come up sooner or later because people are tired of it all. I know many fine and motivated people, even though at times they seem a bit weary. If success comes to the group instead of the single individual that’s fine with me, as long as the people in the group respect each other. At the moment I’m very curious to find out how things work outside of Italy, then I’ll see. It all depends on if I like what I find. Why did I partecipate in this project? I love to be with the people I like, people with the same common interests and goals, “valid but weary people”. To partecipate means to work seriously together and not just because somebody put you up to it. When this happens something of value is certainly created and not because someone else says that’s the way it has to be. 121 Senza titolo, 2010 olio su carta, 40x30 cm 122 123 Ottavio Festa, 28.09.1988, Vasto, Italia Diploma Liceo Artistico, diploma e specializzazione in Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. Diploma from the Institute of Visual Arts, Diploma and Post Graduate Specialization in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. When make an artwork I create another world, another reality. When I was studying at the High School of Arts I worked a lot with real life drawings and cartoon illustrations. Now at the Academy I’m on developing my painting techniques with influences from comics and other kinds of illustration. The artists and movements that influenced me in the beginning and still do are Die Brucke, E: Schiele, Toulouse Lautrec, Rops, Beardsley, Mucha, Bacon, Balthus, Kiefer, L. Freud, Petty Boon, M. In my work I consider the body a container to be exhibited, a body tagged and tattooed that sometimes becomes an object in an erotic or even pornographic universe. The only action of the subject is to exhibit themselves in front of the observer. I get my inspiration from fashion magazines, erotic nude photographs, splatter films and the world of comics and illustration. Recurrent themes are sexuality, pornography, cannibalism and fear. Recently I’ve been thinking about new subjects: rats, insects, little monsters and small men who take full possession of a girl’s body and explore it as scientists would do with an alien. This body becomes a world to be explored by malignant and brutal beasts. When an artist accepts to compromise with the economic side of his work he stops experimenting and looking for new inspirations. Independently of the artistic media, I don’t really like conceptualism while I believe that aesthetics play a decisive role. The problems of young artists are not related to the past of the nation they come from, which in many cases can really help, rather they depend on the politics which doesn’t offer any space for culture and an art market that aims more at quantity than quality. I don’t see any problem if an artist collaborates with a craftsman, though it’s impor- tant that he should be able to produce the same quality of work on his own. I’m afraid that in the future the arid wind of our contemporary world might make us lose a sense of poetry and quality, transforming art into something very exclusive and not for everybody. Among the projects that I have in my mind I would like to produce a comic or illustration of the strange case of Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hyde or Jack the Ripper. I would also like to work on a project about Dylan Dog based on a script written by Sclavi. Art represents life, it tells about and mythicizes it. Part of my background includes seven long years spent between marble and stone. I’ve known many artists who could inform and teach me, but I believe mine is a rhythmic work dictated by music. I love to listen to rhythms, drums, backbeats and notes. Be it classic, heavy metal or Latin American music, it’s always the rhythm that fascinates me. I communicate, or at least try and communicate undeclared doubts, mainly inspired by sacred art and gestures. Mine are minimal complaints, in a way removing the banality of them. My work tends confuse people because they don’t know or do not observe carefully they are actually seeing. My subject is always the same, always about myself, but that doesn’t mean I’m only talking about my life, I also talk about the life of the others. My works come to me almost at random but always stem from pretty well defined projects. The biggest challenge for my future? Getting a commercial truck driver’s license. When you compromise with economy you become a powerless slave of a potent hypocrisy. I can be figurative, in search of myself in the eyes of others, but I can also abstract structures and mental constructions. As of today I believe that in order to be lucky in this field you need a “push”, in other words, you push and are pushed to be helped and supported. At the same time I believe that hard work always pays off . If you delegate the production of a project to others you save time, but you spend a lot of money and completely miss the pleasure that comes from doing things by yourself. You miss the best part of the whole deal! New opportunities will lead to China and Romania, to the places of great ancient histories so that we may understand it and narrate it. Markets will open towards new frontiers while Italy will continue to talk about the art of their past. The last impor- tant group of artist was the Transavantgarde it’s about time we see something new. My only fear is not having the chance to; I travel in order to understand and learn, absorb, memorize and fall in love with the places I visit. To grow together, create a group and make it flourish is perfect, but then you always get back to being alone and on your own. I would like to do a series of exhibitions on cruise ships, where you meet wealthy and spendthrift people to be taken for a ride and at the same time hypocritically making money to continue working. It’s a pity that no one’s ever asked me if I like to walking barefoot in burning sand or how many times I swear. Diploma from the Institute of Visual Arts, Diploma and Post graduate degree in Sculpture from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. I love to communicate and have fun and I enjoy when I communicate. I studied classic techniques for painting and sculpture at high school and I'm very interested in anything archaic which includes the passing of time. Since I come from Sardinia I can't help but be fascinated by all the things this region has to offer from a historical and naturalistic point of view: from its landscapes to its “nuraghi", from its mysteries and legends to its traditions. During my studies at the academy I got deeper into the aspects of primitive art and its ramifications, even in other cultures, with obvious influences on my own works. I pursued this path on my own, without the aid anyone. Other elements or inspirations come from "arte povera" and "land art". In my works I always try put the observer in a particular situation, I like to create an intriguing communication exchange between the observer and my work, I would like to lead him to investigate without re- vealing anything. An artwork doesn’t exist if there is no one to observe it. I try to reveal the ties that man has with nature dealing with the concepts of identity and origin. My pieces don't talk about me, at least not directly. Sometimes random chance is fundamental, in other cases not important at all; I don't have a fixed rule. Materials, shapes and colors are all important ingredients that must have a dialectical relationship, but that's not all, even technology can play a fundamental role. Video, for example, I don't have any technical knowledge at all, but it could be very useful and I believe it might be my next challenge. To come to terms with the financial aspect of art might modify, at least in part, the coherence between the artist and his production. Figurative and abstract are two faces of the same medal, they complete each other, they are two alternatives, one has dynamics and components that the other one lacks and vice versa. To be an artist in Italy is not simple, the country is corrupt and corrup- tion, which in my opinion is by definition in radical contrast with art, is very underhanded and reaches everywhere. There are many reasons why the artists use a craftsmen to help them: to cut the time needed to produce the artwork, to handle very heavy materials or because they're not very familiar with certain techniques. Sometimes in order to produce a piece that contains serial elements of great dimensions the help of one or more craftsmen is at least useful, if not fundamental. In order to proceed in this direction you need to have a lot of money. I prefer those who produce everything by themselves. Art must move, generate energies and reactions, give emotions, force people to think and enjoy and be accessible to everyone. If art forgets about these perspectives its future will be meager and insignificant, that's why spaces for new experiences and new exchanges are essential. To fail by yourself is a defeat that questions only one person, nothing is shared. A group failure is spread out, you can share it and maybe you’ll metabolize it better. The same happens in the case of success. I couldn't say which one is better. Art is an experience, a field of enquiry, an intellectual challenge. My first works were realized with techniques that I would not dare call orthodox, they were created from observing Japanese calligraphy. Then I passed on to photography (I love the kinds from travels and photo reportages) discovering as well, thanks to clay, a certain partiality for three-dimensional art. The curiosity and play of digital art which began with virtual consoles, home computers and arcade games from the 80’s; the advent of cyberculture and the web converge in the interest of the communicative and expressive possibilities that new technology offers. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino I have the chance to share my ideas and my projects with people who are full of enthusiasm, bearers of a cultural heritage whose very existence are being mined by the same institutions that should guaranteeing their perpetuation. The Italian political class ignore how important they are for the survival of this country. The artists that I refer to for my work are Hokusai, Alberto Giacometti, Picasso, Joan Mirò, César, Pollock, Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Anish Kapoor; and then John Cage, Name June Paik, Vito Acconci, Brian Eno, Alva Not, Banksy, Joshua Davis, UVA, Digital Kitchen and other paladins of the post-digital culture. The work “cosa comunicare” (what to communicate) is a aleatory concept, the result of a group of variables that come into play from time to time. Drawing from all sources. The themes are often only a facade but work as a trigger. Communication is a process where it is not necessarily given to be known, a priori, the values of the elements involved: the sender, the recipient, the message (and function), the code, the channel and context. The confines between freedom of expression and the desire to manipulate are labile. This leads me to concede greater space for liberty and indeterminateness, to fortuity, even if it is parameterized. Space from the ordinary to thermonuclear global war; from animism to technology and ethics. The colors, the matter, the space, the light and the form are all fundamental terms of a single equation in the same sense that we can get from Gestalt theories. In the future I think I will take on the challenges offered by holography, printers and 3-D scanners; by enlarging reality and for hybrid spaces. An artist when he comes to terms with economic side of things abstains from old shoes and hunger. The past is a resource, I don’t see how it could represent a limit, if not due to attempts of emulation. In Caravaggio’s time there was the plague. In our times there’s a worse plague on a cultural plain. There is no support for research, innovation or education and the overall intellectual schemes are pretty much dated. In the Museum of Contemporary Art in my city Naples, they preannounced cuts on the electric supply and more still. In the Academies in Germany they’ve been working in robotics for the past ten years; in Australia and Macedonia with biotechnology, all around the world there are centers for interdisciplinary research. Artists or craftsman? The most valid ideas come by tackling the difficulties in the phase of completion. The future of art will probably be characterized by hybridization, a multidisciplinary dialog with other roots of knowledge, above all technology and science. There’s a great deal of excitement going on in Europe and if we in Italy are not aware of it it’s only because things are happening elsewhere or in the underground. Every day on the web there are hundreds of new projects and artistic movements with an international feeling. Success and failure are categories that tend to disintegrate if one works with abandonment, but it’s a good thing to consider them as essential experiences for human and professional growth. I dream of a free web, an itinerary workshop in a van, less inequality, more rights for mankind, plants and animals and lots of Neapolitan pizza. Diploma from the High School of Visual Arts, Degree in Painting and a Post Graduate Specialization in Graphic Arts from Urbino Fine Arts Academy. For me Art is a safety valve, a way of externalizing my innermost joy, it a faithful companion that tells me fascinating stories. I had many self-styled art teachers that attempted to influence me, but the major part of those that truly inspired me I could never have touch because they were children of books and songs or simply because they lived in times of the past: from a far away revolution narrated by Mexican muralist artists to the treacherous spine of Frida Khalo; from the horror stories of a bloody Goya image of some crucifixion, the mark of Otto Dix to the surrealists; from the triumphs of death to the ancient tarots. At the moment I have many stories that I would like to tell. Saying of the poor souls anguished crying, witches bells, pixie spirits hidden in the house, skull worshiping and traditions that cross the seas. I would like to transmit a love of death as a celebrated example of nature, a mon- arch, a lady to be respected and understood, not feared and rejected. Illustrating traditions rooted in every angle of the globe like the skull cult from “dias de los muertos” in Mexico to the underground catacombs of miracles in Naples, Italy. I’m a child of the city of witches and walnuts, I’ve always lived with the magic aura of potions and stories before going to bed. I prefer white and black, at the moment pyrography on wood allows me to continue working on my prints using a woodcutting technique. It’s almost a craftsman’s work of humble origins. That is able to transform my women into saints and warriors. A single precise line can make them go from a death representation in black and white to contemporary heroines. I would like to create installations worthy of the festivity of death, of the beautiful memory, dining with the dead and smoking his favorite cigarettes. More than once I was advise to stop drawing “skulls” because no one would buy them….maybe a doctor, and maybe they’re right. I pay more attention to a market of decorum more than that of history. Often one must abandon what is now more often considered as only a romanticized idealization, even if personal, in function of tasty salability. One can be pampered in abstraction leaving lines and force of the image speak or attempt at a figurative image that is more direct and easier to interpret. Each artist chooses one of these according to what they have to say, if they have something to say. Italy’s artistic past and present, our art history still has a strong influence on us and maybe rightly so. Maybe it is time to let the great-grandchildren come ahead! Maybe we might begin with the classic and maybe banal saying “invest in the young”. We need spaces and structures and way of studying art history that is not based on the succession of dates and certifications. To then give a just value of this choice of study, or rather give the same value of our “degree” in Italy as it is considered in the rest of Europe. I believe that the pleasure of the touch, the odor and dirtying oneself with color and silicon is so fine that it is worth the experience. In an era when everything is endured, from time to money, an artist is only a façade. It is certainly the right moment to create and transmit, in a global society one must remember the actual origins as well as the origins of others. My fear is not being able to connect with people, not being able to exhibit my works or hear the questions raised by those observing and then, be labeled as “the one who does the skulls”. That’s not me and everyone who looks to my works can understand it. Failure itself is painful but being successful in a group is very difficult. The feelings of fear and jealousy that develops in people are strong. Some don’t care about anyone or those once they have done their part disappear. In a group success there is never equ ilibrium. For the moment I’m escaping to Spain to study the population that colonized my homeland and then, in an improbable dream, I hope hold a show in two places contemporarily Mexico City and Naples, build a bridge and be the one two cut the inaugural ribbon. Language degree from Kanda University of International Studies, Japan. Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. In Tokyo I studied painting for a year and learned the basic techniques. For me art is a way of understanding the subconscious, maybe it’s because of this that I find I’m better able to express myself through conceptual art. It would be happy to know that a person observing my works, ( my aim being to convey a sense of silence of being), might experience tranquility, peace. For this reason, for the most part, I draw inorganic or inanimate objects like: stones, walnuts, dried leaves and floating tree trunks. My work, I think, is a balance between random chances and intention, the first occupies a quarter of the space. My drawings are made using pencil and charcoal sticks and speak of me spontaneously. At the moment I only use drawing as a medium but in the future I would like to go beyond two dimensional works. Living and studying in Italy seems to be having some effect on me, I’m beginning to have a greater understanding of color. When an artist has to come to terms with economic factors they lose an important dimension and should at least maintain quality at all costs. I don’t know if it’s more difficult to work as an artist in Italy in respect to other countries, I know too little about the situation to be able to make a comment and the same goes for other problems. I can only continue to have hopes and one of which is to spend the rest of my life doing art. My only worry is that art may become far too hermetic, more and more difficult to understand and therefore useless to people. 145 Senza titolo, trittico 2009/2010 Grafite su carta + riso, legno laccato, 80x34x25 cm Grafite su carta + sale, legno laccato, 80x34x25 cm Grafite su carta + metallo e filo, legno laccato, 80x34x25 cm 146 Senza titolo, 2009 grafite su carta, 147x100 cm 147 Antonio Rastrelli, 02.07.1978, Riccione, Italia Diploma all'Istituto Statale d'Arte, diploma in Grafica, diploma e specializzazione in Scultura all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. . Diploma from the State Art Institute, Diploma and Post Graduate Specialization in Sculpture at Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. I need to communicate and have to do it or I’ll die inside. I began my art career working in graphic arts then change to sculpture. The first important artists for me that come to mind are Michelangelo, Giorgione, Tiziano, Caravaggio, Bernini, Gericault, David great works and great lives. Then there are; Burri, Mannucci, Fontana, Klein, Beuys. Among the living are; Kunellis, Olafur Eliasson, Wolfgang Laib ed Anish Kapoor. The artistic movements that continue to have an strong effect on me and fascinate me are the Futurists and surrealists. I usually tell stories that seem easy enough to understand, but in reality have different ways of being read. The reoccurring theme is the relationship between the western society (represented by cars, taken from police-type movies, which I’ve been feeding on for years) and something from oriental cultures using a pulp-narrative kind of language that takes a lot from the stereotypes of oriental philosophy, like Taoism and Buddhism, an posed in a last rate version. In my first work I left more space for the objects rather than the human figure. These objects are generally coins, cars, real food like, cheese and pudding but also animals. Random factors are always important for my my ideas but never in their realization, there I always carefully contemplate on what I’m doing. My work almost exclusively narrates my life even if not always directly. The first element in my art that I research is the materials to be used, which I always in some way have a personal story with and which always costs me far too much. The second element, because I often work in base relief, is the light that changes the way the image is perceived. Just recently color is beginning to have a greater importance in my work. Among the subjects that I would like to tackle is the human figure, while as for a medium I would like to try (and technique to work with it) would be stone and marble. I wouldn’t mind giving a shot at the complicated world of oil colors. Each person has a metabolism that works in function of their needs and creative flow, which does not necessarily have to be re- vealed to others. In Italy we most certainly feel the weight of our past and our magnificent culture, but the greatest problem is that the Italians that are managing art and culture are completely detached from the reality of the situation. If an artist can find the people to finance them then they can even find professionals to do the work for them. It’s not possible to be highly competent in all fields. In this work as in others it’s necessary to be pragmatic and good managers of oneself. I’m very optimistic regarding the future of art, a little less for the artists in general. There will be plenty of room for new artistic currents if only there are changes in political and social situations; these great changes on a global level will need art for their campaigns, as always for that matter. I don’t know if I will be able to live on my art or if I will be capable of saying something that matters. At the moment I’m filled with doubt. Who knows maybe I’ll take up meditation, far from it all and get in touch with god. Maybe I’ll wander around the Black Forest, or take up a pilgrimage in Santiago, or maybe climb the Himalayas feeding my- self on bread, water and some disgusting roots that would make a goat vomit. What’s important is to enrich oneself within. Success is always better, at least to satisfy our hunger at lunch and dinner, if we can even count on breakfast and a snack all the better. To conquer the world is always on the top of my list of priorities, hopefully I will. The art market is a bit like the fruit market: from the producer to the consumer there are too many hands in between; too many intermediates with limited and demeaning roles for both the artist producing the work as well as the consumer who buys it. In the first case because they influence the production and in the second because I’m sure whoever buys artwork is also a patron of money, taste and culture able to acquire and eventually promote a valid artist without the need of filtering or modifying the artists production. Poi vorrei andare a lavorare all’estero. Diploma from the State Art School, Graduated from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. Art has been a part of my life from childhood and for this reason I feel special. I became aware of my talents due to a very good teacher from High school. She was an extremely cultured person with a very strong personality. During lessons she would often cite Latin and Greek poetry. She taught us Italian, spoke of cinema and contemporary art which at the time I knew nothing about… We would listen to her lessons deeply concentrated and in complete silence so as not to miss a word. Then there was a very mysterious man who taught plastic arts. It was a small corner of the world. It was so nice to work near him. I saw him again recently and I was so full of emotions because he shared my same interests. I find all that has to do with Bauhaus art and Gestalt applied to cinema interesting, the theories of Arhneim, Bazin e Aumont and directors like; Clouzot, Manuel De Oliveira and Resnais. And then there’s art from the 18th century form Cezanne on. We are their offspring, children of contemporary art that invades our lives. I also really like the photography from the 80’s. I’ve always dreamed of being born in the 1930’s, so that I could have lived in what I consider to be the best years which are the 50’s, 60’s and 1970’s. I try to keep my problems and life out of my work, I try to concentrate on dreams and visions where no one is sad… In my works and as an observer I’m always falling in love. I’ve experimented with the human body, painting, sculpture and photography and now I’m involved in making of a video where I draw directly on the 35 millimeter film, photogram by photogram. I don’t like things that make me feel sad and certain kinds of pornography. Lines and color are a part of my work, they’re very important; when I’m drawing they help me express myself and that’s the moment when I feel that the film really becomes a part of me. There are so many techniques and disciplines in art that I’m sure that there are some that I have never even heard of but I would like to work in the area of photogra- phy, maybe traveling. There are different ways of working from one Academy to another according to their geographical context and cultural differences. Money is important, whether you have it or not certainly does make a big difference but less than it may seem. If you don’t have it you learn to make ends meet in order to get by in your intentions. I think that this is an aspect that most people can respect. Figurative art is a matter of study and experience, abstract art is courage and freedom. One does not necessarily exclude the other. We are in 2011 and contemporary art means everyone is free to do as they like, the past is important but up to a certain point, the world has changed. I have many dreams, I hope to one day sell my animation video, present it in some film festival and hopefully make another. Soon I’ll be moving to Rome to do post graduate studies in cinema and visual arts, hopefully to begin a career in a film production company, but this doesn’t mean that I intend to abandon my art projects. Afterwards I would like to work in another country. 153 Rapid follies, animazione, 2009/2010 Pittura/incisione diretta su pellicola, direct animation, 2 minuti e 05 secondi, pellicola 100 metri 154 155 Davide Mancini Zanchi, 26.06.1986, Urbino, Italia Diploma all’Istituto d’Arte, diploma e specializzazione in Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. Diploma from the Art Institute, Diploma and Post Graduate Degree in Painting from Urbino Academy of Fine Arts. It’s not easy to talk about it, for me art is a kind of freedom. All of my teachers have had some sort of influence on me in one way or another. In the beginning I admired Informal Italian art, but also the works of Lawrence Carrol, Robert Raushemberg and Piero Pizzi Cannella. I couldn’t really say where it is that my inspiration comes from, nor what it is that my art work means. Sometimes ideas come to me when I’m walking or sitting in front of a canvas. In my last series of canvases I covered old works with white paint, leaving the outlines of everyday objects, just memories. All’s well and nothing’s right… the author if he intends to create a work of art must be aware of what they’re doing, even though looking at my works just the opposite may seem to be true. It’s impossible not to find some trace of an artist’s life in his work, even if it may not be easy to read. There are many techniques that I’ve never tried that I’m curious about, even so, for the time being I prefer concentrating on painting. Not necessarily coming to terms with the economic side of art means losing something. If one is intelligent there is no need to relinquish anything and there will always be something to eat, for the mediocre person it will probably be necessary to arrive at a compromise. That is the point when an artist gives up art for art’s sake, meaning selling in order to do what one loves doing, therefore doing reasonably well anyway. What’s important when making art is to make new and intelligent proposals and all means are worthy. In Italy working in art is as difficult as anywhere else, even though in some countries young artists are supported by their governments much more than they are here in Italy. Using others to help realize an artwork is quite normal and justified, even Michelangelo had people help him with the Sistine Chapel. How will art be in the future? I have no idea, if I knew I would already be ahead of the game. In the times we live in individuality and selfishness reign, there isn’t room for group works or artistic movements. In that sense I’m not afraid, there’s a time for everything. Anyone would prefer personal success, but rather than a personal failure I would prefer a group success. I’m far too shy to talk about my dreams and projects. As strange as it may seem, thanks must be given to the Minister of Education, Mariastella Gelmini, and to the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Sandro Bondi, in that it is also due to their absolute inadequacy in respect to the importance of the role they cover that drove us to actualize this editorial project (what good mannered kids we are, instead of throwing tomatoes or rotten eggs we thank them...). Rather, true and sincere thanks go to three Professors from the Academy of Fine Arts of Urbino, Massimo Tosello, Emanuele Bertoni and Marie Calajoe who actively supported us in this little adventure, even outside the lesson hours with their suggestions, availability and professionalism; to Maurizio Berlincioni for his help in the translation of the texts, to the owners of Donegal Irish Pub in Ancona; to Bruno Alessandrini for the use of the Raffaello Sanzio theatre in Urbino; to the major of Monteciccardo Federico Goffi for allowing us to use the Convent space, to the students Anna Rosa Paolino, Saveria Gatti, Roberta Monti e Matteo Fortunato who offered to appear as extras, to the lovely Mrs. Maria Luisa Moscati for allowing us to use her Alfa Romeo Giulia Super 1300 and to Mr. Paolo Tomassini who with great courtesy and compliance let us use the projection room of the Ducale Cinema. Last but not least we give tank to the Marches Landscape so rich and variable, for having hosted our photographic romping. Instead, we feel in no way obliged to thank a good part of the Urbinate population who take advantage, economically of Academy and University students, and exchange this with false courtesy, abundant doses of rudeness, living arrangements that are at times indecorous if not even indecent and the nearly total lack of cultural and recreational activities worthy of naming. 163 164
