ABSTRACT DEI CONTENUTI
Il convegno costituisce un evento scientifico che si ripete annualmente da oltre 20 anni, i
cui campi di interesse sono rappresentati dalla patologia chirurgica del segmento anteriore
dell'occhio e dalla chirurgia corneale, eminentemente quella refrattiva. Il congresso è
articolato su due giornate in cui si alternano temi relativi ai due focus citati. Vengono
invitati costantemente speakers non italiani, con rilevanti curriculum in questi campi e
riconosciuti esperti internazionali.
Il programma di quest anno è incentrato in primis sulla tecnologia del laser a
femtosecondi, sia per la chirurgia della cornea che per quella della cataratta. La ricerca
clinica e tecnologica ha consentito nell’ultimo anno un ampio salto di qualità al laser a
femtosecondi, che sta iniziando un percorso di corrente applicazione clinica.
Nell’ambito del congresso si sviluppano sei sessioni di un'ora e mezza ciascuna di
collegamento continuo via satellite con centri chirurgici italiani ed europei. In ogni sessione
vengono presentati casi clinici di chirurgia in diretta corredati da presentazione del caso
clinico, scelta della tecnica chirurgica, discussione con l’aula. Questo importante impegno
organizzativo ha la finalità di mettere in contatto didattico i congressisti con i più avanzati
centri europei e realizzare un aggiornamento che sia nel contempo profondo ed attuale,
oltre che rendere l’audience parte di una comunità continentale.
Le sessioni di live surgery sono intercalate da sessioni di tavole rotonde dedicate a
specifiche patologie, complicazioni, materiali e devices, come le tecniche laser per la
DALK o cheratoplastica anteriore profonda, i miglioramenti alla tecnica di trapianto
endoteliale DSEK, gli impianti IOL pre-caricati.
Uno dei campi di crescente interesse e complessità tecnica è la correzione della
presbiopia tramite chirurgia corneale. Sono presentati gli aggiornamenti dei software
laser ed i risultati degli studi, con le diversificazioni di approccio tecnico, discusse
direttamente con gli speaker. L’ampliamento delle esperienze con lenti intraoculari
pseudofachiche bifocali e trifocali consente un confronto con la nota tecnologia diffrattiva.
Le tendenze più recenti per gli impianti secondari a fissazione sclerale stanno facendo
emergere l’efficacia delle lenti a fissazione iridea, maggiormente rapide da impiantare e
stabili nel tempo. Lo scambio di idee è oggetto di una specifica tavola rotonda.
Nel campo del cross linking, il trattamento standard del cheratocono evolutivo, la ricerca
di modalità di riduzione dei tempi di esecuzione, sta producendo nuove proposte
tecnologiche di aumento della densità di energia, oltre che della elettroforesi, ancora in
sperimentazione, con obiettivo protocolli di trattamento più rapidi.
L’insufficienza del film lacrimale è una para-patologia la cui diffusione è in crescita netta
negli ultimi anni e che interferisce sia con la qualità percepita della vita dei pazienti, sia
con la qualità della chirurgia. La diagnostica clinica ed i più recenti approcci al quadro
clinico sono presentati in uno specifico panel.

Ophtalmologist and cornea, cataract and refractive surgeon at IMO (Institut de
Microcirurgia Ocular) in Barcelona, Spain. Professor at ESASO (European school for

international societies (ESCRS, ASCRS, ISRS, AAO ...) and board member or reviewer of
some

JOSE’ GUELL
He was born on 1960. He is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Autonoma
University of Barcelona since 1991. He studied Medicine and Surgery at the Central
University of Barcelona (1977-84). His Doctorate Degree about “Lasik, laser assisted in
situ Ketatomileusis” was presented with “Cum Laude” on July 99 at the UAB
He performed his Residency Program in Barcelona at the Autonoma University (19861989) at the Vall d’Hebró Unit, a clinical fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at
Emory University, Atlanta (1989) , he was directing the Cornea and Refractive Surgery
Section at the Ophthalmology Department of the Vall d´Hebron Hospital, Autonoma
University of Barcelona until 1999.
Presently, he is an Associate professor of Ophthalmology at the Autonoma University of
Barcelona, Scientific Coordinator and Professor of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery
Module, ESASO, European School for Advanced. Studies in Ophthalmology, Lugano and
Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Unit at the ”Instituto de Microcirugia Ocular de
Barcelona” a private Center. He is the Secretary of the Private Foundation for Corneal
Tissue Obtention.
At the present time, he belongs at the following Investigations lines: “Beca Fis” for the
Expansion Project of Stem cell limbics in Amniotic Membrane and the “Red Nacional de
Investigación Cooperativa: Subproyecto Cirugia Refractiva”
He has been involved in Refractive Surgery since 1989 and in Laser Corneal Surgery
since 1993. Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis and Iris Claw phakic IOL’s have been his
procedures of choice for the correction of myopia and astigmatism since October 1993,
and Intracorneal Ring Segments since 1998.

ANTONIO SCIALDONE
Antonio Scialdone é nato in Italia nel Settembre 1954.
Si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia nell’Aprile 1979, and ha superato l’Esame di Stato
nello stesso anno all’ Università di Firenze.
Nel Luglio 1983 si è specializzato in Oftalmologia all’Università di Firenze.
Dal Maggio 1983 al Gennaio 1984 ha ricevuto una borsa di studio presso la Clinica
Oculistica di Milano.
Dal Febbraio 1984 al Dicembre 2000 ha prestato opera come Oculista dipendente
ospedaliero nel Dipartimento di Oftalmologia dell’Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele –
Università di Milano, dove era Responsabile dell’Unità di Chirurgia del Segmento
Anteriore.
Dal Novembre 1985 al Maggio 1986 è stato "Research Fellow” al Dipartimento di
Oftalmologia dell’Hammersmith Hospital a Londra (GB).
Dal 1990 al 2000 ha svolto le funzioni di professore a contratto di chirurgia del segmento
anteriore alla scuola di specializzazione in Oftalmologia dell’Università di Milano.
Dal 1998 al 2000 è stato nominato responsabile del controllo di qualità clinica per il
Dipartimento di Oftalmologia dell’Ospedale San Raffaele.
Dal Dicembre 2000 è Direttore Medico di Oculistica 1 presso l’Azienda Ospedaliera
Fatebenefratelli e Oftalmico di Milano.
Ha eseguito circa 7500 interventi chirurgici sul segmento anteriore e posteriore dell’occhio.

LUCIO BURATTO
Il Dr. Lucio Buratto ha conseguito la Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università
degli Studi di Milano dove si è anche specializzato in Clinica Oculistica.
Nel settore della oftalmologia il Dr. Buratto si occupa soprattutto della chirurgia della
cataratta e della chirurgia refrattiva (che corregge la miopia, l’astigmatismo e
l’ipermetropia); in questi settori ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti a livello internazionale
e nazionale.

ATTIVITA’ SCIENTIFICA
Ha organizzato e diretto 49 congressi di aggiornamento sulla chirurgia della cataratta, del
glaucoma e sulla laserterapia.
Ha partecipato come relatore e docente ad oltre 400 corsi e congressi.
Ha organizzato 54 corsi pratici per l’insegnamento della chirurgia oculare.
Ha prodotto n. 32 video didattici di vario genere di cui 17 dedicati alla chirurgia della
cataratta.
Ha eseguito interventi chirurgici, a scopo didattico, in live surgery in oltre 300 convegni o
congressi italiani ed esteri.
Ha eseguito chirurgia via satellite trasmessa in 54 Paesi di 4 diversi continenti.
Ha ideato e fatto costruire 148 ferri per chirurgia oculare.
Ha eseguito più di 125 pubblicazioni scientifiche di vario genere nel campo
dell’oftalmologia.
Ha pubblicato 67 trattati di chirurgia oculare di cui 26 dedicati alla chirurgia della cataratta,
5 a quella del glaucoma e 11 a quella della miopia.

PRINCIPALI TAPPE PROFESSIONALI
Nel 1978 ha cominciato ad effettuare la facoemulsificazione secondo Kelman, la tecnica di
estrazione della cataratta che a tutt’oggi è la metodica più sofisticata di intervento.
Nel 1979 ha iniziato ad utilizzare le lenti intraoculari da camera posteriore.
Nel 1981 ha introdotto in Italia la “Viscochirurgia”, la moderna metodica operatoria che,
mediante l’uso di sostanze viscoelastiche, permette di semplificare e rendere più sicura la
chirurgia della cataratta e le altre tecniche chirurgiche oculari.
Nel 1982 ha presentato in Italia lo Yag Laser, lo strumento a luce fredda che permette di
eseguire alcuni interventi chirurgici all’interno dell’occhio senza necessità di utilizzare ferri
chirurgici.
Nel
1983 ha organizzato il primo convegno internazionale di oftalmologia con
trasmissione live via satellite.
Nel 1986 ha introdotto in Italia la cheratomileusi senza congelamento, tecnica di
correzione chirurgica per difetti di miopia elevata ed alta ipermetropia (precorritrice
dell’attuale Lasik).
Nel 1989 ha proposto ed utilizzato, primo assoluto a livello internazionale, il laser ad
eccimeri intrastromale per il trattamento della miopia elevata (tecnica ora chiamata
LASIK). Nello stesso periodo ha iniziato a trattare anche la miopia lieve con le tecniche di
superficie (PRK).
Nel 1992 ha conseguito al congresso internazionale di San Diego (California) il premio per
la miglior nuova tecnica chirurgica (cheratomileusi miopica con laser ad eccimeri,
precorritrice dell’attuale LASIK).
Nel 1992 ha fondato a Milano, l’Istituto per l’insegnamento della chirurgia oculare.
Nel 1992 ha introdotto in Italia le nuove tecniche di chirurgia della cataratta senza sutura.
Nel 1993 è stato uno dei relatori del rapporto annuale della Società Oftalmologica Italiana
“SOI” dal titolo “Chirurgia Corneale”.
Nel 1995 è stato insignito del riconoscimento internazionale “KM Study Group” per le sue
ricerche ed innovazioni apportate nel campo della miopia elevata.
Dal 1995 è consulente della Banca degli occhi del Veneto.
Nel 1995 è stato monitor della Food and Drug Administration.
Nel 1996 ha ideato ed utilizzato per primo al mondo la nuova tecnica di Lasik Down Up,
perfezionamento della procedura Lasik per la correzione della miopia; è detentore di un
brevetto USA su tale tecnica.
Nel 1998 è stato nominato “Chirurgo Refrattivo dell’Anno” al convegno Refractive Alliance
del 1998 in occasione del congresso dell’American Academy a New Orleans.
Nel 1998 è stato nominato dalla Società Oftalmologica Italiana “Maestro dell’Oftalmologia
Italiana” ed è stato premiato con medaglia d’oro.
Nel 1998 ha pubblicato in lingua inglese il primo trattato: “Lasik principles and techniques”
che è stato il Best Seller internazionale di Oftalmologia; nello stesso anno ha pubblicato
anche l’edizione italiana.
Nel 1998 è stato insignito del riconoscimento “Pioniere in Chirurgia Refrattiva” dal Lasik
Institute in occasione del Convegno Europeo di Nizza ESCRS.
Nel 1999 è stato coordinatore del rapporto della Società Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI):
chirurgia della cataratta.
Nel 1999 è Stato insignito della medaglia d’oro “Peter Choyce” al congresso della società
inglese UKISCRS per i suoi studi nella Lasik.
Nel 2000 ha ricevuto il premio “Barraquer” per le sue ricerche ed innovazioni sulla Lasik al
Congresso Internazionale di Dallas dell’American Academy; questo è il massimo
riconoscimento internazionale per un chirurgo refrattivo
Nel 2000 è stato coordinatore del rapporto SOI 2000 “ Chirurgia Refrattiva”.
Nel 2000 ha pubblicato in lingua inglese il secondo trattato:”Lasik:Surgical techniques and
Complications”.
Nel 2002 ha pubblicato, in lingua inglese, il trattato “Phacoemulsification: Principles and
Techniques” ed il terzo trattato ”Custom Lasik : Surgical techniques and complications” .
Nello stesso anno sono stati pubblicati anche in italiano.
Nel 2003 ha ottenuto l’ “Award Certificate” rilasciato dall’American Academy of
Ophthalmology (AAO) .
Nel 2004 è stato il primo chirurgo europeo ad utilizzare il nuovissimo laser “Intralase” per
chirurgia refrattiva.
E’ stato relatore della “Binkhorst Medal Lecture”
dell’ESCRS a Parigi nel 2004.

Nel 2005 ha ottenuto un riconoscimento per la Keynote Lecture durante il Congresso

Nel 2006 ha eseguito , primo in Europa, trapianti di cornea utilizzando il Femtosecond

Nel febbraio 2006 ha ottenuto il premio Fyodorov durante il Congresso Annuale
dell’HSIOIRS ad Atene.
Nel 2011 è stato il primo chirurgo dell’ovest Europa ad utilizzare il Femtosecond Laser per
la chirurgia della cataratta.
Nel 2011 ha ricevuto il Lifetime Achievement Award durante il Congresso Annuale
dell’AAO, ad Orlando, Usa.
Nel 2011 è stato nominato Socio Onorario della Società ASETCIRC (Asociation espagnola

Professional experience: Prof. Marchini is the head director of the Ophthalmic Clinic of
Verona University. His surgery experience cover more than 15000 operations both on
anterior and posterior segments. He is teaching professor of the Ophthalmology Course at
the University of Verona (Degree of Medicine) and Director of postgraduate course in
Ophthalmology (Residency). He was director of the glaucoma epidemiological study of
Egna-Neumarkt between 1991/1998. and responsible of clinical research for the
application of the stereotactic radiosurgery with Gamma Knife to the treatment of ocular
tumors. Now is scientific responsible of the F.B.O.V. (Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del
Veneto) project for limbal stem cells transplantation and other 7 clinical trials approved by
the Ethic Committee of the AOUI of Verona.
Society Membership: Prof. Marchini was a member of the Research Committee of the
European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS - 2002/2005). He has been
invited to joint to the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine for his experience and
knowledge in the ophthalmic ultrasonography and UBM. He is also member of the
Scientific Committee of the Italian Ophthalmological Society (SOI – 2005/onwards) and

Researchs and Publications: He developed researches in the following subjects:
glaucoma (mainly epidemiology, pharmacology, diagnosis and surgery), keratoplasty,
ocular surface and limbal stem cell transplantation, anterior segment surgery and
accommodative IOLs, ophthalmic echography, ultrasound biomicroscopy, and ocular
tumors.
During his career Prof. Marchini has been publishing 294 works on national and
international specialized and peer-reviewed scientific journals and is Scientific Reviewer of
5 peer review journals.
PAVEL STODULKA
As a head-surgeon of Gemini Eye Centers he performs a wide range and high volume of
surgeries from cataract and refractive surgery through glaucoma to vitreoretinal and
corneal surgery. The first surgeon in his country to perform lasik (1994), epi-lasik (2004)
and femtosecond laser lasik (2006) and also MICS (2001) and femtosecond laser cataract
surgery (2012 February). Today he has the world largest series of laser cataract surgery
performed on Victus (B+L/TPV) laser platform (over 1 000 cases). He was the first to treat
retina with Avastin in his country (2006). One of the world pioneers in DMEK (2004).
He successfully treated with Boston KPRO artificial cornea several patients blind for over
10 years. One of them was blind for 53 years which might be according to a literature the
longest blindness ever cured. The president of the Czech Republic is his patient.
He holds a teaching position at Charles University in Prague. He has been educating
residents and fellows for many years and has given over 500 lectures in ophthalmology
mostly in Europe and North America.

MARCO TAVOLATO
Marco Tavolato graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Padua. He
specialized in Ophthalmology at the same university. He worked at the 'Centro Oculistico
San Paolo' Ophthalmology Department in the Hospital of Sant’Antonio di Padova, was
employed as the Department's Chief Consultant in October 2006. He has published
scientific articles in national and international journals. He worked for a year at the
VISSUM Institute in Alicante (Spain) under the supervision of Prof. Jorge Aliò.
Marco Tavolato, MD is Medical Director of Refractive Surgery Unit of Sant’Antonio

Instituto Oftalmologico de Alicante, Alicante, Spain under the supervision of Prof. Jorge

NIKICA GABRIC
Prof. Nikica Gabric, MD PhD, was born in Metkovic in 1961. In 1984 he graduated from the
School of Medicine of University of Zagreb, in 1988 he acquired a scientific degree of
Master of Science, and two years later he became a specialist in ophthalmology. In 1997
he obtained the scientific degree of Doctor of Science, in the same year he founded with
his mentor, the late prof. Kresimir Čupak, Svjetlost Eye Clinic. In 2010 Svjetlost Eye clinic
became first Croatian University Eye Hospital by the School of Medicine of University of
Rijeka.
In 2011 prof. Gabric founded Svjetlost Eye clinic in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, expending
his activities in region. Except in Bosnia and Herzegovina, prof. Gabric acts as a
consultant at Eye Clinics in Meljine, Subotica, Zemun and Pristina.
Prof. Gabric has published over 400 scientific papers and articles in national and
international journals, as well as 4 books. Today he works as an ophthalmologist at
Svjetlost Eye Clinic, where he is also Head of the Clinic. His specialty is anterior eye
segment surgery, he has performed more than 30.000 surgical procedures, mainly
cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, corneal transplantations and excimer laser surgery. He
operated in 16 countries worldwide, in over 50 operating rooms, and got a chance to
operate on prestigious Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution in Moscow, becoming
the only surgeon in the region that achieved this. He is Professor at the School of Medicine
of University of Rijeka, and collaborative member of Croatian Academy of Medical
Sciences.
Throughout his professional career he worked as an innovator following international
trends and bringing new technologies and methodologies in our country. Thus, in 1995 he
founded the first Croatian Eye bank LHOB, and with his personal commitment he
introduced a wide range of new surgical procedures in Croatian medicine: ultrasonic
cataract surgery, amniotic membrane transplantation, sulcus fixation of intraocular lens,
cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation in children, introduction of excimer laser
refractive surgery, improvement of transplantation medicine.
His dedication to profession and science has been recognized repeatedly by the
responsible institutions so he received numerous awards, including the Order of Croatian
Danica with interlacing, the Ministry of Health award for outstanding contribution and
achievements in the entire work, the recognition of Southeast European Ophthalmological
Society (SEEOS) for extensive service in the field of ophthalmology and the prevention of
blindness, Cicero prize for best speaker among Croatian entrepreneurs. One of the last
awards is the award for the Best Manager in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he received
in 2011 for scientific and business development, world-wide reputation, technological and
professional development, as well as the superior ophthalmic practice expanding in
Southeast Europe.
MAJA BOHAC
Maja Bohac, MD, was born in Slavonski Brod, Croatia in 1981. She graduated from the
School of Medicine of University of Zagreb in 2006 and received a Dean’s award for best
student in her generation. Four years later, in 2011, she became a specialist in
ophthalmology. She is currently working on her doctoral dissertation on the topic of
refractive surgery.
Dr Bohac works at Svjetlost Eye Clinic in Zagreb, where she holds a position of the Head
of the Refractive surgery Department. She is also managing 14 residents of ophthalmology
currently doing their residency for Svjetlost Eye Clinic. She is also collaborating with
Svjetlost subsidiaries in Split, Croatia, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she
performs refractive laser surgeries. She has instructed lasik surgery to many
ophthalmologists in several clinics in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.
Her specialty is anterior eye segment with a special interest in refractive laser surgery.
Although quite young, she is the most experienced refractive laser surgeon not only in
Croatia, but in the region as well. She has performed more than 8.000 laser surgical
procedures. She attended several trainings abroad for LASIK surgery in Germany and
Spain, as well as training for phakic lens refractive surgery in Italy.
IVA DEKARIS
Iva Dekaris, Associate professor of the University of Rijeka-School of Medicine (2009), is a
Medical Director of Svjetlost Eye Clinic in Zagreb, Immediate Past President of the
European Eye Bank Association (EEBA; 2010-2013), and Associate-member of the
Department of Medical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
After recommendation of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts she received "Joyce
and Zlatko Baloković" grant for a one-year scholarship (1997-98) at Harvard Medical
School, where she finished Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at The Schepens Eye
Research Institute in Boston; and defended her PhD thesis „The role of cytokines in
corneal graft rejection“ at School of Medicine in Zagreb in 1999. In year 2000 she received
the highest Croatian reward for young scientists – Croatian state award for the
achievement in science.
She published 42 papers in CC journals, co-authored first book on Eye banking in Croatia,
wrote 22 chapters in books and over 250 abstracts at conferences (published citations
276: Scopus Index). She is a lecturer at postgraduate School at Universities of Rijeka and
Zagreb-School of Medicine and a reviewer for IOVS, British Journal of Ophthalmology,
Acta Ophthalmologica, Eye, Molecular Vision, Collegium Antropologicum, OMICS
Publishing Group and BioMed Central.
She is a primary investigator of a scientific project supported by the Croatian Ministry of
Science named: ”Immunology of the eye”, in a collaboration with Institute “Ruđer
Bošković” in Zagreb. She is a member of the Editorial board for Journal of Clinical &

The areas of her expertise are corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery.
She was the first surgeon to start with lamellar keratoplasty in Croatia in year 2010, and
has the overall experience of over 15.000 surgeries mostly cataracts, corneal
transplantation and refractive surgery on the lens. She speaks English, French, German
and Italian.
RATIMIR LAZIC
Ratimir Lazic, MD PhD, was born in Zagreb, Croatia. In 1998. he graduated from the
School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. In 2005. he became a specialist in
ophthalmology, under the mentorship of Nikica Gabric, MD PhD. In 2008. he obtained
Masters Degree on School of Science, University of Zageb. In 2010. he obtained PhD
degree Doctor of School of Medicine, Univeristy of Zagreb, and in the next year Scientific
Assistant Degree.
As young ophthalmology resident he was a junior researcher on scientific project "Corneal
Transplantation – Eye Bank" in Zagreb in 2001. Since 2004. he is a head of Retina
Department in University Eye Clinic "Svjetlost" in Zagreb, specialized in the diagnostic and
treatment of the posterior eye segment diseases.
Following the development of Eye Clinic "Svjetlost" and its foundations he is permanent
consultant and surgeon not only in Zagreb, Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Split, but also in
Meljine, Subotica, Zemun and Pristina.
Among numerous scientific papers and articles he is most recognizable for those
published in Ophthalmology Journal and Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental
Ophthalmology.
His constant improvement in medical and surgical treatment of the posterior eye segment
diseases results in implementation of new surgical techniques and new therapeutic
methods. He is experienced in minimally invasive vitrectomy in treating retinal detachment
with silicone oil and gas tamponade, as well as in diabetic retinopathy. He performed
number of macular surgeries such as macular pucker, macular hole and vitreomacular
traction syndrome, but also vitrectomies for intraocular foreign body and endophtalmitis.
He introduced new therapeutic methods; photodynamic therapy in age related macular
degeneration (2004.); intravitreal injections: Triamcinolon in 2004., bevacizumab (Avastin)
in 2005., ranibizumab (Lucentis) in 2007., dexamethasone intravitreal implants (Ozurdex)
2011., aflibercept (Eylea) 2013.
Not the less important, he introduced new diagnostic methods in Croatia: Digital
Fluoresceine Angiography in 2003. and Optical Coherent Tomography in 2005. for better
diagnostic and treatment of the macular diseases.
He is experienced in organising committees for domestic and international meetings. As a
head of tretina department he is constantly working with young residents sharing
theoretical knowledge and practical skills in ophthalmology, especially in the field of retina.
He is an active member of The American Society of Retina Specialists.
TJIA KHIUN
Consultant Ophthalmologist, Isala Clinics, Zwolle, Netherlands
Dr.Tjia was trained at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and started as a
consultant in Zwolle in 1990. His main interest is in cataract surgery, with a focus on both
education as well as research.
He developed a cataract training program in the Netherlands for Dutch residents and is
involved in the Basic Phaco instructional programme for ESCRS.
He has written multiple articles in Ocular Surgery News, Cataract Refractive Surgery
Today, Ophthalmology Times, Eurotimes, Eyeworld, Review of Ophthalmology and and a
book chapter in Microincisional Cataract Surgery, The Art and Science,
From Amar Agarwal and Richard Lindstrom.
He delivered many presentations, instructional courses and participated in many live
surgery programmes at congresses around the world.
He is a Co-chief medical editor of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today Europe

JESPER HJORDTAL
He is professor and manager of the corneal and refractive surgical unit on the Department
of Ophthalmology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. He has since 1991 been clinically
and scientifically involved in corneal laser surgery. More than 1.400 corneal laser surgeries
are performed annually in the department. In May 2009, the clinic obtained a CZM
VisuMax femtosecond laser, which has been used extensively since then. In the
workshop, Jesper Hjortdal will present comparisons of the outcome of microkeratome
versus femtosecond laser based LASIK versus ReLEx based techniques for treatment of
moderate and high myopia.
