With her attractive personality, unaffected manners, warm and sincere
eyes, she had a very natural presence on TV at the height of her
television career, in shows such as Quelli della notte (1985) alongside
Renzo Arbore, Marisa la nuit in 1987 and in the 1987 Fantastico show
with Adriano Celentano.
However, television was her second career. She began as a stage
actress, by joining the theatre company of Eduardo De Filippo the
day she turned twenty-one. “As soon as I came of age, I didn’t want to
waste another minute”, says Marisa Laurito, Neapolitan from head to
toe, with her raven black hair always pinned up like La Belle Otero-,
because I had planned to become an actress at the age of eight”.
But her father interfered with her plans. He wanted her to go to college
and take a degree. But Marisa, stubborn as she was, played a dirty trick
on him. In high school, she began painting and was so good at it that
her father encouraged her to develop her artistic talent, by helping her
sell her paintings, being sure that he would keep her away from the
neighborhood’s theater that way. She pretended to agree with him.
And do you know why? “Because with the money I earned selling the
paintings, I secretly paid for drama lessons”, she confides us. And to
think that she rediscovered her passion for art in the past few years!
Owing to her extraordinary creativity and uncontainable vitality, she
has shown her works in several galleries, at Rome’s Triennale Museum
in 2014, and this year she is among the artists showcased at the Venice
Art Biennale, at the Guatemala Pavilion, curated by art critic Daniele
Radini Tedeschi. Sweet Death is the title of the exhibition showing
until November and featuring the works by Marisa Laurito: colorful,
Baroque-style and highly ironic installations made of silicone, which
describe the “sweet death” of Italian cuisine and combine Marisa’s
dual passion for art and cooking.
What is your opinion about Italian cuisine?
There are some strongholds of excellence that resist no matter what,
but the current proliferation of culinary fads is a reflection of most
chefs’ tendency to be surprising at all costs, even to the detriment of
taste.

La sua simpatia contagiosa, i suoi modi autentici, il suo sguardo aperto e sincero bucavano lo schermo delle leggendarie trasmissioni che
negli anni ’80, all’apice della carriera televisiva, l’hanno avuta per
protagonista come Quelli della notte (1985) a fianco di Renzo Arbore,
Marisa la nuit del 1987 o l’edizione di Fantastico del 1987 accanto ad
Adriano Celentano.
Ma la televisione è la sua seconda vita artistica. La prima è stata favolosamente segnata dalla scuola severissima e dal teatro di Eduardo
De Filippo nella cui compagnia entra a 21 anni, firmando il giorno
del suo compleanno. “Diventata maggiorenne, non persi un minuto
di più - racconta Marisa Laurito, napoletana dalla punta dei piedi fino
all’ultima ciocca dei capelli corvini sempre appuntati come la Bella
Otero – perché già a otto anni volevo fare l’attrice”.
Il padre non le dà ascolto, anzi l’ostacola. La vuole laureata. Marisa,
ostinata, a diciassette anni gli gioca un tiro mancino degno di Gian
Burrasca. Mentre è al liceo comincia a dipingere, la cosa le viene
bene, talmente bene che il papà l’incoraggia pur di tenerla lontano
dai teatri di quartiere. Cerca committenti, l’aiuta a vendere i quadri…
Lei buona buona lo accondiscende. E sapete perché? “Con quei soldi
mi pagavo di nascosto le lezioni di recitazione” confessa la Laurito
che da qualche anno ha riscoperto quella giovanile passione per l’arte. Grazie a un estro fuori dal comune e a una vitalità incontenibile,
dopo aver esposto in varie gallerie, e nel 2014 alla Triennale di Roma,
quest’anno il suo nome è tra gli artisti invitati a esporre nel padiglione
del Guatemala, alla Biennale di Venezia, dal critico d’arte Daniele Radini Tedeschi che ne è il curatore. Sweet Death è il titolo della mostra
che ospita, fino a novembre, le installazioni colorate, pop e debordanti di ironia realizzate, in silicone, da Marisa Laurito per raccontare
la “dolce morte” della cucina italiana, unendo a quella per l’arte anche
l’altra sua grande, e forse più nota, passione per i fornelli.
Al di là della provocazione, cosa pensa della cucina italiana?
Ci sono roccaforti di eccellenza che resistono con sapienza e coraggio,
ma è altrettanto evidente il dilagare di mode culinarie che pur di sorprendere guardano sempre meno al gusto.
