Concept Statement
Like our ancestors, the roots of our generation come from the past. From
those same roots, our futures are born. As time passes we become the
very seeds that give birth to new life and customs - This is a crucial part of
who we are as individuals and as individual cultures. It is a protecton of a
heritage, not just for one group of people, but for all mankind.

The Museum of African American History’s mission is to preserve, conserve
and interpret the contributions of
people of African descent and those
who have found common cause with
them in the struggle for liberty, dignity and justice for all Americans.
The museum is the only institution in
New England that, through engaging exhibits, tours, and powerful education and
public programs, shares the rich legacy
of African American accomplishment in
shaping the American democracy during
the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded in
1967 and opened in 1986, its campuses in
Boston and Nantucket feature two Black
Heritage Trails and four historic sites;
three are national historic landmarks.
Design Brief:
The Museum of African American History has purchased a new building at
38 South Russell Street, Boston, next to
their Boston Campus, 46 Joy Street. They
are looking to develop a master plan
for their new building that would meet
ADA requirements, along with public
and private spaces that would include:
Gallery and Exhibition Space, an Educational Space, Library, Archival Storage,
Class Room/Conference Room, a Visiting Scholar’s Office, and Adminitrative
offices. It is important to consider preservation, durability and sustainability.

The third floor is not designed as a public space. Located on this
floor are associate offices and temporary staff offices. There are
ADA accesible bathrooms for both male and female employees.
This floor also includes a staff kitchen, that is complete with a
small kitchenette to cater to all staff. The warm color/design
pallette for this floor includes a muted grey-blue, the yellow
that was inpired by the African Meeting House, and numerous
materials and finishes that work well with the inspiration of the
initial design scheme.

The first floor is designed to be a greeting space for patrons of
the museum. Located in this space is the reception area, which
will be used for greeting guests as well as collecting entrance
fees. Also, this space will include a gallery for viewing the many
maps of Doctor Rizzo’s Afriterra Map Collection. The interesting
thing about the first floor is that there will be interactive walls
that will allow museum visitors to search and select maps to
view, digitally. While this is the most common public space of
this building, it will allow visitors to look through the history.
A-Frame desks, such as
this, will be placed in this
gallery space so that visitors and educators may
look at the Afriterra Maps
at close proximity.

Though the fourth floor is primarily executive office space, the
concept of the other three floors is still evident in its design.
The color scheme of this floor encompases the feel of the rest
of the building. With the primary wall color being a dull brown,
and an accent color of the classic museum yellow, the furniture
complements the palatte. The floor also includes a more lavish
executive bathroom, and direct access to the luxurious rooftop
oasis.

Like the first floor, the second floor is also a public space. The
main function of this space is to create a learning environment
for visiting classes. The educational staff can host numerous
learning activities for all different group of children. There are
also many different bookshelves for storage, a small office for
the visiting scholars, and a large conference room that is able to
accomodate up to twelve staff members. There is no restroom
on this floor, but there are two means of egress and an elevator.
