Buon festival a tutti. Roberto Molinaro Maria Teresa Bassa Poropat Massimo Greco Assessore regionale all’istruzione, formazione e cultura della Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia Presidente della Provincia di Trieste Assessore alla cultura del Comune di Trieste Science+Fiction, the International Science Fiction Festival, will happen again in Trieste this year, as usual. The event is organised and promoted by film centre La Cappella Underground and it features a programme rich in previews, retrospectives, competitions and meetings with fantasy and science fiction authors of cinema and literature. The event combines screenings of never-before-seen masterpieces with popular “remarque”, as it is in the case of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Kubrick masterpiece, released forty years ago in cinemas, is bestowed with in-depth examinations and high-profile guests. Besides, the festival showcases the new trends in sci-fi, fantasy and horror cinema; an original focus on the relationship between science and cinema, organised in collaboration with the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) and the Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment (ARPA); the presentation of the new frontiers in French digital cinema production. In the end, you have a wide range of offers to discover the science fiction planet from all perspectives, enjoying very classy and spectacular special effects. Have a good festival! Science+Fiction, Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival, highlights the relevance and appeal of the worlds of fantasy, the experimental languages and the new technologies of multimedia productions. This year’s edition, as usual, the Trieste festival offers an interesting program of exceptional quality, coupling all the positive experiences of past editions with the most recent premieres and new releases. Excellent examples are the section the organizers have created around the French sci-fi productions, the fantasy and horror film screenings and the eagerly-awaited panel on 2001: A Space Odissey, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece that fascinated so many generations of filmgoers. Science+Fiction has become, year after year, a landmark for all science-fiction lovers and audiences of all kinds feeling the genre is not only appealing but everlasting. The event contributes to make the territory of Trieste highly competitive on a cultural level and to increase and spread the occasions of exchange in the field of art and film productions. For this reason, the Trieste Provincial authority supports the Festival and looks closely at its development, with the belief that events of this nature ought to continue and keep being promoted, as capable of producing interesting and valuable results for the benefit of the whole community. Here comes the ’08 edition of an international event placing Trieste in the lead in our country’s science-fiction and fantasy arena. A number of exceptional premieres, a focus on Europe – and France in particular, ready to challenge Hollywood in the film production field – the tribute to a film giant, Stanley Kubrick, the connection with the region’s scientific network: a rich schedule of activities reconfirming Trieste’s primary role in this specific field of research. intro Science+Fiction 2008 La Cappella Underground Si potrebbe partire dal 1968: data rivoluzionaria anche per il mondo della fantascienza. 10 We could start from 1968: a date which is revolutionary for science fiction too. In that extraordinary year Stanley Kubrick and Arthur Clarke take to completion their 2001: A Space Odyssey; Roger Vadim brings to the screen Jean-Claude Forest sexy heroine Barbarella; hordes of zombies revolt in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, a free adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend; and Charlton Heston starts his fantastic voyage in the Planet of the Apes saga. Basically, science fiction in cinema definitely moves away from the traditional patterns, to become a genre which is mature from all points of view, while the collective symbolic image inventory will never be the same anymore. 1968 is also the year when our club was founded: the visual arts centre La Cappella opens its doors in Trieste in December 1968, to start the film activities a few weeks later, consecrating its name to the symbol of the Underground. From the very start, science fiction is featured as one of the priorities in its programme, at first with classics such as King Kong (75-year old!), later with the retrospectives and the special programs at San Giusto Castle, in collaboration with Trieste science fiction festival: the Jack Arnold retrospective, the tribute to Roger Corman, Fant’Italia, Fant’America 1 and 2, just to name a few. Today the tradition goes on with Voyage Fantastique, a new plug in the exploration of national schools related to genre cinema: this year, after having honoured Jules Verne and offered trails between science fiction, nouvelle vague and bande dessinée, the monograph gets to contemporary productions, with an excellent testimonial: Marc Caro, a punk Taoist filmmaker – as he likes to define himself. Aside of him, a numerous group of artists and filmmakers will go back over the last years of a production which is often unseen in Italy despite the features of a film territory that is authentically alternative to Hollywood. However, Science+Fiction is by now a synonymous of a panorama of the biggest works in this field, without any geographical prejudice, with its characteristics of alternating blockbusters and independent films. So we have Love Story 2050 from Bollywood; Terra Nova from Russia; Santos from Chile. Sleep Dealer is on the border between United States and Mexico, while Tres Dias comes from Spain, Cyborg She and 20th Century Boy from Japan and Eden Log from France. They will all be in our official selection Neon, some in and some out of competition. As for the previews, finally approaching to the Italian screens we have El Orfanato, by young Iberian talent Juan Antonio Bayona; but there will also be Nightmare Detective 2 by Shinya Tsukamoto; and Death Race by specialist Paul W.S. Anderson, remake of the Cormanian Death Race 2000. Moreover, 11 a taste of the kolossal The Day the Earth stood Still, remake of the classic movie by Robert Wise. And much more is to discover among the pages of this catalogue and on the screens that welcome us again this year: Trieste Cinecity Multiplex (waiting for this town to finally decide to aim at new resources on its excellent cinema subjects, even with an appropriate space for its numerous and prestigious festivals). A number of tributes complete the program: to Ray Harryhausen, master of stop-motion, who will greet us from London in videoconference and will get our life achievement award Silver Urania; to Nicolas Roeg, who directed the unforgettable The Man Who Fell to Earth and Don’t Look Now and recently returned behind the camera with the thriller Puffball; to John Phillip Law, who passed away prematurely this year (he was our guest in 2004); and to Francesco Barilli, at the centre of the Nocturno event. Finally, Trieste, city of sciences, couldn’t do without two important events on the relationship between science and cinema, such as the screening of Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the End of the World, that will happen with the collaboration of SISSA and the Unesco Week of Education for Sustainable Development 2008, in collaboration with ARPA FVG/LaREA. To sum with, there will be room for all tastes: we wish our audience a good festival... a good science fiction! sommario Giuria 12 neon 14 20-seiki shônen [20th Century Boys] 17 Akumu Tantei 2 [Nightmare Detective 2] 18 Artefacts 19 Boku no kanojo wa saibôgu 20 Čarlston za Ognjenku [Tears for Sale] 21 Chemical Wedding 22 Chrysalis 23 Dark Floors 24 The Dead Outside 25 Death Race 26 Eden Log 27 Encounters at the End of the World 28 Love story 2050 29 Martyrs 30 The Mutant Chronicles 31 Novaya Zemlya [Terra Nova] 32 The Objective 33 El Orfanato 34 La Possibilité d’une île [Possibility of an Island] 35 Prehod [Transition] 36 Santos 37 The Signal 38 Sleep Dealer 39 Tres dìas [Before the Fall] 40 42 urania d’argento Ray Harryhausen 53 extra 95 Spazio nocturno 96 44 Un secolo di animazione di modellini. The Dinosaur and the Missing Link (1915). A sinistra Willis O’Brien (Obie). 58 urania d’argento Ray Harryhausen A century of model animation. From Méliès to Aardman by Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton published by Aurum Press, London It was in that small marble shop where Willis O’Brien (Obie) finally realized his destiny. The year was 1914 and in a moment of idleness the young O’Brien modelled several clay figures. Seeing what he was doing, a colleague called Stenberg challenged him to a tabletop mock fight with the figurines. At first it was just a piece of fun but Obie began to speculate how the figures might be made to ‘move’ with the aid of film, much like the characters he had seen in cartoon films at the picture houses. He had read somewhere that such cartoons were made by filming a series of drawings, each showing a different stage in the progression of the action. If that technique could be applied to models (and why not?), by the same process of shooting one frame and then moving the models very slightly before shooting another, it might be possible to produce a convincing illusion of movement. As Obie later put it in an interview with the New York Times (published on the 11 November 1962, the day after his death), ‘Out of this came the idea of movies with animated models.’ By accident he had stumbled on the work to which he would devote the rest of his life, a life which would see him progressively develop the art of three-dimensional animation to a level of near-perfection. To succeed in the field which Obie had now taken up it is not enough to be a good animator; the art also requires thorough training in drawing and model-making and, perhaps even more importantly, a vivid and active imagination. Obie possessed all these assets and many, many more. But his greatest achievement was that he hit on the idea of using model animation for a very specific way. As well as his interest in moving pictures he continued to be fascinated by the dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures which had first captured his imagination back in Oregon all those years before. Obie could see that dinosaurs were the perfect subjects for an animator. If he was able to bring them to life then the cinematic possibilities were endless; and dinosaurs would become the distinctive trademark of all his work. But how could Obie test his idea of using stopmotion to animate his creations? In 1914, using some of the money that he had saved whilst working in the marble shop, he rented a small shed on the roof of the Bank of Italy building in San Francisco. There he began to experiment and eventually constructed a brontosaurus from modelling clay moulded over a crude wooden armature. We don’t know the dimensions of this model but the armature was built of wooden struts held together with bolts and wing nuts which could be tightened to hold the model in a pose. Next, he hired a 35mm camera and employed the services of a newsreel cameraman to produce a one-minute test of the brontosaurus walking across a painted miniature prehistoric background. The clay covering of the model was extremely malleable and progress was painfully slow because the model needed attention after every frame was shot in order to remove the marks and indentations left by Obie’s fingers as he manipulated it. Although crude in the extreme, the film was promising enough to convince Obie that the technique would work and that his dream of breathing life into these lost creatures was practical and likely to be commercially viable. Gradually over the next few weeks, by trial and error, he learned how best to animate the model, and began to develop his own style and to give his model a basic but reasonable fluidity of movement. It is sad that this first film and the records of his other experiments have not survived. Obie’s next step was to look for finance to make a longer film. His father was not encouraging, telling his son in no uncertain terms that there could be no possibility of a future in movies, and especially not of a career working with models. Obie asked around and following a number of unsuccessful meetings met with San Francisco exhibitor (owner of the first post-quake Nickelodeon) and sometime producer, Herman Wobber. Wobber was intrigued and impressed by Obie’s artwork and test films, seeing the commercial possibilities of the process. He immediately formed a company to finance the making of a movie and is reputed to have advanced Obie a extremely generous $5,000 to make an animated model film that he could exhibit and/or sell. What proportion of that figure was for the hire of a basement room in the Imperial Theater on Market Street where the film was shot, and for the construction of the models, scenarios and the animation work itself, and what proportion was for Obie, is lost in the mists of time. Thrilled that he had at last found finance for his venture, Obie sat down and wrote a basic outline and from that produced a number of sketches and drawings for a one-reeler ‘caveman comedy’, which he called The Dinosaur and the Missing Link (1915). 59 Willis H. “O’Bie” O’Brien (March 2, 1886 – November 8, 1962) was a pioneering motion picture special effects artist who perfected and specialized in stopmotion animation. urania d’argento Ray Harryhausen Sotto Ray Harryhausen plasma la donna serpente. Ray Harryhausen: biography of a legend To the delight of cinema audiences the world over, Ray Harryhausen has made dinosaurs walk the earth, horses fly, statues come to life, apes play chess, and skeletons fight. Harryhausen calls his work “kinetic sculpture”; it is a method of stop-motion filmmaking that has made him a cult figure in the world of cinema. Born in Los Angeles, June 29, 1920, Ray Harryhausen was educated at Audubon Junior High and Manual Arts High School. School held little interest for him, but at an early age he conceived an overwhelming passion for the film King Kong, a fascination which became the basis of his future life. “I first saw King Kong by accident,” he has said, “My aunt was a nurse and had been taking care of Sid Grauman’s mother. She was given three tickets for the film and took my mother and myself. I haven’t been the same since.” Harryhausen became fascinated with the film because he couldn’t determine how it was done. He knew it was not a man in an ape suit and soon learned that the film’s creator was Willis O’Brien. “I was in awe of O’Brien’s ability to produce on the screen the illusion of life.” Harryhausen remarked. The film inspired Harryhausen to begin experimenting with his own models. The first was a Cave Bear fabricated from his mother’s fur coat. Borrowing a friend’s 16mm camera, Harryhausen made his first attempts at stop-motion photography. The 62 camera was difficult to control, but he says, “the excitement of seeing the bear move was quite satisfying, which encouraged me to do more”. He found that his interest in this form of cinema was so great that he began to look for ways to develop his hobby into a career. To this end, he went to night school at the University of Southern California and studied all aspects of trick photography, from matte shots to double exposure. Harryhausen established a studio in a corner of the family’s back porch and his father, always encouraging Ray’s ambitions, later built him a studio at the back of the garage. By 1940, he owned his own singleframe camera and had begun work on his first feature-length film, Evolution, an intricate film based on the origin of the species. Unfortunately for Ray, Disney released Fantasia and he realized there was no point in continuing. He decided the time had come to get a job and showed his footage of Evolution to George Pal. Pal, who made shorts called Puppetoons, thought Harryhausen’s work brilliant and hired him. Harryhausen worked with Pal until 1942, when he was drafted into the Army Signal Corps. He was lucky to be assigned to the film unit and spent the war making animated segments for orientation films. Discharged at war’s end, Harryhausen went back to his garage studio and decided to make a series of fairy tales, beginning with a ten-minute film called Mother Goose Stories. After some setbacks, the film was released by Bailey Films and, with the money he earned, Harryhausen was able to make four more fairy tales. Ray Harryhausen’s hero remained Willis O’Brien, creator of King Kong. In 1939, he had summoned the courage to telephone O’Brien and arrange a meeting. O’Brien had been critical of his work, although in a constructive way, but obviously remembered Harryhausen’s talent. In 1946, O’Brien asked Harryhausen if he would like to assist in the production of Mighty Joe Young, the story of an enormous ape. Naturally delighted, Harryhausen moved into the RKO Studios and the film, finally released in 1949, won O’Brien an Oscar. O’Brien’s next project, The Valley of the Mist, ran into pre-production problems and Ray Harryhausen returned to his fairy tales. Then a friend introduced him to a producer, Jack Dietz, who wanted to make a monster movie. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), Harryhausen’s first feature-length film, was based on long-time friend Ray Bradbury’s story of a dinosaur rising from the sea in answer to a foghorn, thinking it to be a mating call. A young producer who had worked for Universal and Columbia, Charles H. Schneer wanted to make a picture about a giant octopus that pulls down the Golden Gate Bridge. Called It Came From Beneath the Sea, the film was a success and also marked the foundation of a professional partnership between Schneer and Harryhausen that endured nearly 30 years. Harryhausen and Schneer produced a trio of films during the height of the science fiction boom of the 1950s including the aforementioned It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) and 1957’s 20 Million Miles to Earth. All of these low-budget, black-and-white films were enlivened by Harryhausen’s developing artistry and innovation within the field of stop-motion animation. At the end of the 1950s, Harryhausen and Schneer made a distinct break away from science fiction into the fertile world of fantasy, fairy tales, and myth, with their groundbreaking and highly acclaimed The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. This film was also Harryhausen’s first opportunity to experiment with color, and its success was such that it led to a trilogy of highly popular Sinbad movies, culminating in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger in 1977. The late 1950s/ early 1960s also saw Harryhausen and Schneer moving their production base from Hollywood to London, where they could utilize the technical expertise of British studios and crews while also being able to film at various exotic European locations, particularly in Spain. In 1963, Ray produced arguably his most famous film, Jason and the Argonauts, which is also regarded by Harryhausen himself as 63 his most complete film, incorporating as it does much of his most seamless and yet outstanding stop-motion animation in many memorable sequences, not least of which is the famous fight between Jason and the supernatural skeletons of the dead. During the 1960s, Harryhausen also contributed to notable films such as The First Men in the Moon in 1964, One Million Years BC in 1966 and The Valley of Gwangi in 1969. He finally brought the curtain down on his film career in 1981 with his and Schneer’s Greek mythological epic, Clash of the Titans. In 1992, at the sixtyfourth Academy Awards, Harryhausen was honored with an Oscar for his lifetime of extraordinary achievements. In 2003, Harryhausen was honored with a star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame; in 2004, his large-format book, Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life was published; and 2005 saw the release of an elaborate two-disc DVD, Ray Harryhausen: The Early Years Collection, containing all of Harryhausen’s early short films, tests, and experiments. In February 2008, Ray Harryhausen was honored by The Art Directors Guild at its 12th Annual Awards ceremony for his “Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery.” Harryhausen has finished his third largeformat book, written with Tony Dalton, in which they detail the history of stop-motion animation worldwide. urania d’argento Ray Harryhausen The 7th Voyage of Sinbad Usa, 1958, colore, 35 mm, 88’ Regia/Direction Nathan Juran Sceneggiatura/Screenplay Ken Kolb Fotografia/Cinematography Wilkie Cooper Montaggio/Editing Edwin H. Nel tentativo di segmentare la retrospettiva, si è scelto di procedere attraverso alcuni dei fenomeni chiave che rendono la produzione francese qualcosa di unico e ben identificabile rispetto ad altre realtà cinematografiche nazionali. For the fourth time, our Voyage Fantastique makes its way towards the French sci-fi galaxy and its surroundings. Extending our retrospective over a four-year time, we aimed at focusing on those distinctive elements making French panorama something unique and different from all other national film productions. Naturally starting with Jules Verne (and Georges Meliès) in 2005, our journey went through the Nouvelle Vague experience (thanks to Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Louis Malle and others’ “genre” raids) in 2006, and moved on the graphic world of brilliant artists such as Moebius, Dionnet, Caza, Bilal and the powerful Métal Hurlant imagery of the 1970s last year. This year, French fantasy production will be at the heart of our programme again with one of its unique and distinctive features: “les images numériques”, namely the use of digital techniques. Twenty-five years ago, France developed the first 3D film in Europe, André Martin and Philippe Quéau’s Maison Vole, with Philippe Quéau subsequently creating the Imagina Festival. The specific genre cinema aesthetics identifying what was produced in Paris and its surroundings during the 1980s and 1990s soon became conspicuous thanks to the outstanding contributions of artists such as Luc Besson, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro and Mathieu Kassovitz : their works paved the way to the creation of a series of “maisons” of visual effects, nowadays real 70 leaders at the international level. The BUF Compagnie, founded by Pierre Buffin in 1984, developing new software advances in VFX and consolidating its position thanks to the vfx of Jean-Marie Poiré Les visiteurs in 1993 and Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet La Cité des Enfants Perdus in 1995, is surely one of the best examples of it. For BUF, however, the real revolutionary moment came with the achievement of the bullet time effect, used for the first time in the music video Like A Rolling Stone by Michel Gondry in 1996 and further developed in The Matrix in 1999. From that time on, a great success was guaranteed by the participation to Fight Club in 1999 and The Cell in 2000 as well as to some blockbusters as Van Helsing (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Speed Racer (2008) and The Dark Knight (2008). Next challenge BUF will face is the new Gaspar Noé feature film, Enter the Void, expected to be released in 2009, while working with Luc Besson on two new episodes of the Arthur and the Minimoys saga. A very similar path to BUF’s is that of the Duran Duboi company: already working on Delicatessen in 1991, the company developed VFX for sci-fi productions as Les Mille merveilles de l’univers (1997) by Jean-Michel Roux and Peut-être (1999) by Cédric Klapisch; for Jean-Pierre Jeunet masterpieces such as Alien Resurrection (1997), Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain (2001) and Un long dimanche de fiançailles (2004); for Luc Besson EuropaCorp productions as Joan d’Arc (1999) and Wasabi (2001); for Immortel (ad vitam) by Enki Bilal in 2004; and for a real milestone, as far as fantasy imagery in Europe is concerned, as Le Pact des loups by Christophe Gans (2001). Furthermore, in 2001 we assisted to the realisation of one of the first digital camera movies in the world, namely Vidocq by great specialist of CGI Jean-Christophe Comar, well known to the great public as Pitof, by this time internationally renowned artist, permanently working in Hollywood. It was on the American routes that Alexandre Aja’s career developed too, after his first feature film Furia in 1999; after the Fifth Element (1997) operation, the doors of the US market recently opened for other French filmmakers, firstly for Mathieu Kassovitz, in 2003 with Gothika and in 2008 with Babylon A.D. (though the director says he’s extremely unhappy about the final effectiveness of the movie). Getting back to the main theme, the panorama of VFX in France is extremely rich and dynamic thanks to the activity of many companies, from Mac Guff Ligne (in league with Jan Kounen since Dobermann, 1997) to Mikros Image (among the movies they post-produced, Les Revenants by Robin Campillo, 2004 and La Sirene rouge by Olivier Megaton, 2003), from Éclair Studios (among their last efforts, La Science des rêves by Gondry, 2006) 71 to Def2shoot (Un ticket pour l’espace by Eric Lartigau, 2006; OSS 117: Le Caire, nid d’espions by Michel Hazanavicius, 2007). Few days after our festival then, the capital city of France will host the second edition of ParisFX, an event expressly devoted to creating round tables and debates among people working in the field. Marc Caro will be the hyphen between last year and this year’s comics programme. Caro, tireless experimenter and excellent testimonial of our focus, has landed on the world of cinema after the graphic experiences with Métal Hurlant in the 1980s. This year, Caro took to completion his first solo movie, Dante 01, with the complicity of writer Pierre Bordage, greatly involved in new contaminations between literature, cinema and graphic novels. Aside of him, on the limelight of Science+Fiction 2008, we’ll have the pleasure to have some of the most talented new generation artists, skilled in nouvelle horreur solutions but projected in the fantasy world in its broadest meaning: this is the case of Xavier Gens, who directed Frontière(s) (already a cult movie) in 2007 and - straight after that – turned to action movies with Hitman, as well as the case of Pascal Laugier, who, after debuting with Saint Ange in 2004, is now on screen with the “existential torture” Martyrs (2008) and will soon work on the remake of Hellraiser. Sopra Immagine tratta dal film Dante 01. 76 77 asteroids 2001, quarant’anni fa di Giuseppe Lippi asteroids 2001, Forty Years Since by Giuseppe Lippi Di decennio in decennio, continuiamo a celebrare due date significativamente vicine. One decade after another, we’re still intent at celebrating two significantly near dates. 1969: first lunar landing of mankind. 1968: premiering of the most realistic lunar landing in the history of cinema, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In its attempt at unificating some of the most successful moviemaking techniques, the film still represents a wondrous experience. The preference for wordless images accompanied only by music comes from the origins of cinema, together with the hard-working photographic effect used to simulate movement in space-stop motion. More typical of the Sixties is the film bent toward innovation and experimentation, although Kubrick never contents himself with that and anticipates the future of his art, foreseeing the advent of digital techniques. Even if not digitally enhanced, the 2001 imagery looks as brilliant and seamless as the most celebrated CGI. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a moving picture designed to bring audiences beyond their normal perception to new perspectives. Adding musical effects to the visual, the film’s soundtrack makes a revolutionary use of the score which underlines its advanced photography and editing. A filmmaker’s dream come true, it is also a “total” experience whose powerful aesthetics conveys various issues touching the destiny of mankind. Man’s evolution is shown from early beginnings to the developments of a still mysterious future, making clear that refinement of intelligence has been our foremost means of survival. However, it is not certain that our intellectual advancement, and the still hidden advancements which will take place in the future, will allow us to discover the ultimate truths about the universe. Their depth is such that they’re likely to remain unprobed, for the good reason that they would require too much time to be deciphered. Mathematician John D. Barrow explains that there could exist such complex equations that even the most advanced computers could require millennia to solve them. It’s an elegant way for suggesting that at the end of our history there could still be questions unanswered about the nature of the world of which we’re a part. As a film, 2001 shares this problematic view and along with the adventure of knowledge it reopens the issue of the unknown. There are levels of reality which simply escape our grasp, although Stanley Kubrick warns us that, at the beginning of 21st Century, even metaphysics could be conceived as a scientific issue. He has often declared that the very existence of God was a problem he saw in scientific terms, since our venture into space would put us in the face of mystery and the discovery of alien beings of superior intelligence would be considered by ordinary men as the proof that gods exist. Their work would resemble magic, to the point that our new space odysseys would make a mystic experience not much different from the ones described by our myth-making ancestors. On the other hand, if capable again of a mythical language we could witness a rejuvenation of the species, a metamorphosis of mankind which could bring to a new and unexpected evolutionary leap. This could be accomplished with the help of intellects which are to us what we are to jungle beasts. As a result, the progress of knowledge could start again on a fresh basis and with unheard-of perspectives. These are some of the hypotheses worked out by 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film meant to make sense not just on a rational level. Its issues are mostly psychic issues, and through Kubrick’s vision they bring us a step further our mundane world-view. Seeing it again on the big screen is a way to celebrate its influence on our generation: before cyberpunk and virtual reality, 2001 opened our eyes to a wider experience of cinema. Graced with a rare gift for the extraordinary, this is the vision of an epic journey from the labyrinths of a lonely planet to deep gulfs of mystery. Special effects pioneer, inventor and director by his own, Trumbull later went on to work for sci-fi masterpieces such as The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: the Motion Picture and Blade Runner. Besides, he won the Golden Asteroid award at Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival in 1973 with his first feature film Silent Running. How did you get to work for 2001? I was working for Graphic Films on a number of different films about things like space programs, going to the moon, going to Mars, space stations, lunar modules, etc. The studio got a job on a film called To the Moon and Beyond, for New York’s World Fair, and the film was shot in 70 mm, and I worked on illustrations and artworks for this movie. At that time Kubrick was living in New York, and after he saw this film at the World Fair he called Graphic films and said: “I’m working at this space film and I’m looking for people specialised in this kind of things, can you help me?” My boss said we could, so we got the job. It was something like preliminary consulting, we had to do just some illustrations of space stations, lunar bases, lunar landscapes and the space craft. We sent all to New York and Kubrick liked the work, but he decided to go and make the movie in London, so he stopped the contract. I asked my boss if I could contact Kubrick directly, and he went like: “Well, I’m not supposed to talk about it, I have this contract.... anyway, you can find Kubrick’s phone number written on the board downstairs in the office.” So I called Stanley Kubrick, I said I’d been doing these drawings for him and I’d like to work on his movie: I was very determined to find a way to work with him. And he said: “Yes, I’ll send you a plane ticket, come over!” That was the beginning of a job that he said would have taken about nine months. It took two-and-a-half years for me! in Hollywood. I saw it on this fantastic giant screen, in the 70mm format: that’s the only way to watch that movie. How did you start to work in science fiction? I was a science fiction fan, a regular reader of Analog, and Robert Heinlein was one of my favourite writers. I was a young artist studying illustration and painting, and my portfolio was all filled with science fiction: alien landscapes, spacecrafts and things like that. I got my first job in Los Angeles because I had this idea that I wanted to be in animation or something like that. I went to an animation studio, they looked at my portfolio and said: “You shouldn’t be doing cartoons, you should be doing space animation. We know a studio across town that is called Graphic Films: they’re doing space animations for NASA and the Air Force.” So I called for an interview, they liked my portfolio and said: “Can you paint this satellite and bring it back completed tomorrow morning?” So I painted the satellite over that night, brought it next day and they said: “All right, you’ve got the job!” Sopra Immagini tratte da 2001: A Space Odyssey. 84 When did you see the film completed for the first time? I saw it in Los Angeles, when it opened in April 1968, at the Cinerama Dome Theatre 85 Can you tell us something about the influence of other space movies on 2001? The only one I remember is the Universe film, made by the Canadian Film Board. Kubrick had a print of that film, he showed it to us and said: “This is the best I’ve seen so far.” It was very realistic looking and some of the most beautiful stuff in the movie was the part regarding travelling through galaxies. Kubrick hired a man who worked on that film, Wally Gentleman, who was probably the first photographic effects supervisor on 2001, but for personal reasons he left very early. But the whole movie was a big experiment: it’s an experimental film and that’s why I like it so much. Kubrick was very eager and very willing to try things, so he allowed us to explore new photographic techniques. He himself was a very gifted photographer, so when we started those ideas of the Jupiter machine and things like that, he understood immediately what the idea was and supported us in building new photographic machinery. So it was a great opportunity, that happens very rarely. What was your first job on 2001? I was responsible for working on all of the 16 screens that surround HAL’s eyes: they were rear-projected films. I made all of them, the layout of the controls and computer screens. In the beginning, IBM was involved for the computer interface design on the film, but after a while they pulled out of the project. asteroids asteroids 2001: A Space Odyssey Regno Unito/Usa , 1968, colore, 35 mm, 141’ Can you tell us something about the sequence of the time warp, called by Arthur Clarke the Star Gate? The Star Gate was my greatest challenge of working on 2001, because there was no Computer Graphics at that time. For this infinite corridor of lights and shapes I designed what I called the Slit-Scan machine. I worked on a technique of image scanning adapting a device that was used in industrial and scientific photography, with this visual effect of seemingly infinite planes. The Slit-Scan machine was very slow: it took 4 minutes per frame. I made it all automatic, so that once it got started it would run by itself. Sometimes we’d have a night shift crew and this machine was in a completely dark room, so the only thing they could see was these tiny little lights: they could hear it go and they could get used to the sound, so when it made a weird sound or it stopped all they had to do was shut the machine down and I would fix it in the morning. I had it to run for many hours sometimes, some of the shots were probably 18 or 20 hours of photography for just one cut. For this reason, the whole process regarding the Star Gate was very slow, because it requires this imposing machine, capable of moving the camera and its support, and we had to work for weeks, sometimes 24 hours a day, working frame by frame. Can you tell us something about the Star Child? There were some beautiful photographs in Life Magazine, by a photographer named Leonard Nelson: he was the first guy that ever photographed embryonic babies in the amniotic liquid, and Kubrick got this kind of inspiration from that. It was a very weird idea, very symbolic, not literal at all: so it had to be very mysterious, soft and magical. How did you get the music integrating so well with the movie? At first, Alex North had done a complete electronic score for the movie, but Kubrick was very disappointed: he thought we needed something completely different. He loved music very much, and had a very big collection of records. He used to go to concerts all the time and he liked dancing: waltz, flamenco, everything. So when he started looking for another music to go with the movie, he remembered about The Blue Danube, a record in his children library home. He said: “You cannot do better than the greatest of the great composers!” So he had to find the greatest of the great conductors in the great orchestras, and he listened to the Blue Danube from many different performances to find he one he liked best. Besides, he wanted to cut images to the music, which is very rare in movies: usually the score is made after the images are cut. And this was possible thanks to the enormous amount of shooting wanted by Kubrick: the ratio between what was shot and what made it to the film is amazing, because it’s rare in a movie that you go over 30 to 1, even in a documentary film... but for A Space Odyssey it was 200 to 1! 86 Regia/Direction Stanley Kubrick Sceneggiatura/Screenplay Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Ispirato soltanto vagamente al romanzo di H. L. Lawrence The Children Of Light, pubblicato dalle edizioni londinesi Macdonald nel 1960, Hallucination era il lavoro di un regista abbastanza sprezzante del genere fantascientifico, eppure in seguito ne è diventato insolita pietra di paragone, uno dei film più seriamente contemplativi di questo tipo, in una preziosa posizione centrale fra gli altri pilastri britannici del genere, ovvero La vita futura (1936) e 2001: Odissea nello Spazio (1968). In 1961 a full decade after The Big Night, his last film shot in the United States American expatriat director Joseph Losey made his only feature for Hammer Film Productions: The Damned. Said to be only loosely based on H. L. Lawrence’s novel The Children Of Light, published by London-based Macdonald company in 1960, The Damned was the work of a director more or less contemptuos of science fiction as a genre; it subsequently became an unusual example, one of the most seriously contemplative films of its kind, a worthy middle ground between those other British pillars of the species, Things To Come (1936) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). By and large, critics didn’t know what to make of it and hedged their bets: “Brilliant, flawed” summarized The Telegraph, “Strange but fascinating” echoed Variety. The trouble with The Damned is that it had to be regarded with a certain amount of imagination and forgiveness because Losey’s original cut of the picture - 96 to 98 minutes long, according to different sources - was never shown in theaters until the early years of the 21st century. On July 2, 2007, it resurfaced as one of the many Columbia Pictures titles newly licensed to Turner Classic Movies. The Damned had the misfortune to be produced at a time when Hammer were beginning to suffer diminishing box-office returns for pictures like Terence Fisher’s The Two Faces Of Dr Jekill ( 1960) and Phantom Of The Opera (1962), films which took unusual and even experimental liberties with their classic characters and storylines. Made in a more intellectual, less exploitative manner than Hammer’s usual product, as well as being critical of government and fundamentally downbeat, The Damned was shelved until May 20, 1963, when Columbia Pictures Corporations released it in Britain in support of another Hammer production, Michael Carreras’s thriller Maniac, also shot in black-and-white HammerScope (2.35:1). For this mooted World Premiere, The Damned reportedly sacrificed an entire reel of footage, cut from its original length to 87m. Three months after this compromised release, Losey’s subsequent film The Servant (1963) premiered at the Venice Film Festival and became one of the most critically lauded films of the year winning numerous awards and nominations for its writing (Harold Pinter) and direction. Losey’ s reversal of fortunes happily extended to The Damned, which won First Prize at the Trieste Science Fiction Film Festival in July. It is unlikely that Losey’ personal rise in international status had anything to do with forcing the matter of the film’s belated release in America, where he had been “damned” (i.e. blacklisted) for refusing to comply with a summons to testify before the House Of Unamerican Activities Committee in 1951. When Columbia released the picture as These Are The Damned (the title in quotes onscreen, though no one in time film says those words) in July 1965 - four years after shooting wrapped - it was advertised with a crude, glowing eyed child campaign that tempted false associations with Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Village Of The Damned (1960) and Children Of The Damned (1963), both British made adaptations of John Wyndham’s novel The Midwich Cuckoos. For its US release, a further reel of footage was ignominiously dropped from Losey’s prize winning picture, reducing it to a barely feature length 77m - better suited to cobilling with Henry Levin’s 127m Genghis Khan. Though it is only beginning to reach large numbers of viewers now, Losey’s director’s cut was in fact restored by Columbia Pictures quite some time ago. “It was in the late 90s when we worked on this title”, reveals Grover Crisp, Vice President of Asset Management and Film Restoration at Sony Pictures. “Although it has been seen on 35mm prints since then, and at a few festivals in Europe, it does not get requested too often. There is not too much to say about restoring it, as it was pretty straightforward. We had longer material in secondary elements and combined this with the original negative, which was cut for the shorter version. So, technically, it was not dramatic challenge, just a normal one. The Day the Earth stood still is, however, an exception. The entire movie is about the final message delivered by Klaatu. I still agree with the content of the film. With its warning about an atomic war, the film was a forecast, and teaches us the way in which we all have to behave to live together. I liked the film to be a science-fiction one; not another trip to the moon but a sci-fi film about earthly life, an opportunity to discuss upon extremely important topics” (Robert Wise on His Films, edited by Sergio Leeman, Directors Guild of America/ Silman-James Press, Los Angeles 1995). “Darryl Zanuck once phoned me and told me: Meet producer Julian Blaustein, he has a script that may be interesting. I decided to meet him for the first time and he gave me the script. After reading it, I sayed: “Wow, I like it so much, it’ll be a good movie!” Then we started talking about the cast and Zanuck suggested that a famous actor played the role of the alien. We thought that a star actor would have threatened the credibility of the character, so we refused the proposal. Later on, Darryl called again to recommend a good theatre actor he had just seen in London: Michael Rennie. He was perfect because he had never appeared on screen before. Thanks to him, the spaceman was credible” (by Robert Wise, taken form the above quoted catalogue). At its first screening at Cinema Viale, really scared its young audience. Watched again three years ago, at San Sebastian Film Festival, during Robert Wise’s retrospective of all his works, the film represented a tuneful hyphen between the author’s extraordinary, extra-noir period and the phase of socio-historical, political thoughts. “The Day the Earth stood still is a simple production but, at the same time, Wise’s major science-fiction success; the film is closer to the noir genre than to the Holliwood space opera tradition”, Ricardo Aldarondo, editor of the catalogue Robert Wise (San Sebastian Film Festival/Filmoteca Española, 2005, in Spanish and English) wrote. Quoting Wise’s words, “An authorization by the Department of Defense was needed for every scene with the army. The Department didn’t want to give us the military equipment we needed because it didn’t like the film subject. We then asked the National Guard and had no problems [...]. I think many of my films are important because of their subject: man and the world in which he lives, the way in which he lives in it and adapt to it. An actor, a friend, a book by Carlos Aguilar and Anita Haas We met John Phillip Law in 2004, in the Festival de Cine fantastico de Malaga. We had always been admirers of his unique career, always been curious about his rise to fame and then his sudden fall, and so we contacted him to help us launch the book El Cine Fantastico de Aventuras. Delighted with the idea, John accepted immediately. We met him in Malaga airport, and before we knew it, we had become good friends. He immediately took us into his confidence and spoke to us so openly and honestly that it seemed as if we had known each other for years. Javier G. Romero, publisher of the magazine Quatermass, was also present at the festival. It wasn’t a big surprise then that after spending so much time with John at so many different festivals in different cities and becoming closer and closer to him during the following year, that Javier spoke to us about the prospect of writing a book. He wanted to publish a glamorous book about this actor whom he found had both such a unique career, and was also a wonderful person. The book, John Phillip Law. Diabolik Angel, which took almost two years to put together, consists mostly of a long and sincere interview with John. Long, because of all the fascinating events which took place throughout both his personal and professional life [...]. The Babylon of West Hollywood in the fifties with its drag racing and dark, alegal nightclubs; the rigid mentality imposed by a deputy sheriff father and of having various well-known military family members, (including George Washington himself); the masonic lodge and the Christian Science; Military service at the time of the Cuban Missile crisis, and the national hysteria that it unleashed; the intellectual and leftist environment of New York in the early sixties; the following hippy euphoria in California with its corresponding legends like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, and their New York antitheses, the sinister Velvet Underground, brainchild of Andy Warhol, and led by Lou Reed; free love, orgies, and the unlimited consumption of drugs, typical of the decade from 1965-1974; New Mexico of the sixties, paradise of artists and draft dodgers; the dawn of urban development in Hawaii, and the introduction of Japanese cuisine in California; The Playboy empire with it’s voluptuous philosophies, run by the magnate Hugh Hefner; the lively “dolce vita” of Rome, at first, and then psychedelia; the depressed and depressing communist countries during the tyrrany of the iron curtain; the agitated Spain of Franco’s dictatorship with all sorts of rich American spies conniving with the elite around the dictator; the arrival of yoga, hare krishna and martial arts in western culture; the awakening of the oriental countries in the eighties. John Phillip Law had, in one way or another, something to do with all of these phenomena. In some cases as a result of his acting career, and in others as a result of personal choice. To a lesser or greater degree, observing, getting involved, learning. Although maintaining a logical harmony, he shows a similar diversity in his five decades of professional work in film, theater, and television. Working as an extra in childhood, for the all-powerful Metro Goldwyn Mayer of the fifties; contracts as a young actor during the agony of the Studio System (with Otto Preminger, and United Artists); theatre on Broadway, directed by none other than Elia Kazan; professional connections with the peculiar couple formed by Roger Vadim and Jane Fonda, and the countercultural tandem of Jane Fonda’s brother Peter, and Dennis Hopper; picaresque Italian comedies; adaptations of European literary classics, or current American best-sellers; spaghetti westerns in the glorious years when Almeria was known as the European Hollywood; the English director Peter Collinson who passed away prematurely; starring roles for two masters of the fantastic genre, Roger Corman and Mario Bava, as well as for the Stop Motion magician, the genius Ray Harryhausen; Italian style erotic religious horror, every kind of European co-productions, German language films, Oriental action films, directto-video, American soft-core; television series for family viewing on both sides of the Atlantic; Dracula on stage twice; the aviator in The Little Prince, also on stage. A definitely unique and heterogenous globetrotter, he manifested himself in a diverse typology which comprises heroes and anti-heroes; honest husbands, and soulless seducers; soldiers of every age and stripe; incurable psychopaths, and impeccable sheriffs; doctors and priests; angels and demons. 102 A destra John Phillip Law in Diabolik. 103 extra Omaggio a John Phillip Law Barbarella Francia/Italia, 1968, col., 35mm, 98’ Regia/Direction Roger Vadim Sceneggiatura/Screenplay Jean-Claude Forest, Claude Brulé Fotografia/Cinematography Claude Renoir A sinistra La locandina di Barbarella. Mi sono reso conto di avere così tante domande irrisolte. extra Tribute to Nicolas Roeg Interview with Nicolas Roeg by Jason Wood taken from Sight and Sound August 2008 Nicolas Roeg turned eighty in August, shortly after the release of his latest film Puffball. Roeg established his reputation while working as cinematographer, before films such as Performance (1970), Walkabout (1971) and Don’t Look Now (1973) confirmed him as a leading director. But first Bad Timing (1980) and then Eureka (1982) ran into problems with uncomprehending distributors, and he found himself at odds with an industry increasingly resistant to his vision. He continued to work throughout the 1990s, giving us flashes of brilliance in Cold Heaven (1992), the made-fortelevision Heart of Darkness (1994) and 1996’s Two Deaths. However, in the new millennium, long-cherished projects, most notably an adaptation of Night Train by Martin Amis, came and went and the shadow cast by Roeg’s absence from the screen grew longer. Puffball, adapted from a novel by Fay Weldon, is a tale of urban deceit and rural passion, of doctors, witches, birth and death. Perfect material then for Roeg. Jason Wood: How did you come to the Fay Weldon novel and what convinced you that it was suitable for a film? Nicolas Roeg: I’d been sent the script by Dan Weldon [Puffball’s screenwriter, and Fay Weldon’s son] and it had an instant impact. Screenplays are difficult for me. I don’t usually do anything from a screenplay because I like the experience of working with the writer. I like Fay Weldon’s work; in fact I think she’s very underrated in England, rather like du Maurier who I’d had a good experience with on Don’t Look Now. I know that I’m going to be asked what the film is about and I would say that it’s about life. You can’t really just call it a horror-thriller. Our lives all have a beginning and end, with all the middle sections as anecdotes and I love that. Puffball had that quality to it, that beat: it represented all the different sections of life. magic of film. I’ve never storyboarded ever in my life, not even on The Witches. JW: You are also a great believer in incorporating chance and happenstance in your work, famously refusing to allow anyone interrupt shooting no matter what the distraction. Does this approach resists? NR: It’s the most exciting part about the film-making process. If you are so rigid with your plans then you may miss a moment that is telling you something. I love the scene in The Treasure of the Sierra Mother (1948) when the old man begins dancing and his fellow prospectors call him a crazy old fool and ask him what he is jigging for. They haven’t seen the gold beneath their feet. This is the promise of life. This is the JW: The film reunites you with Donald Sutherland. NR: His part has within it in some curious way how Donald and I also feel about each other. He makes a visit, and the lives of the characters in the movie change because of it, but it also prompts a change in his own circumstances. Since Don’t Look Now Donald and I have often talked about working together again but things don’t necessary work out that way. I wouldn’t want people to think that his casting was some sort of gimmick or an attempt to re-visiting past glories; I honestly couldn’t have felt comfortable with anyone else playing that role. JW: Have you remained faithful to a comment you made in relation to Don’t Look Now concerning a refusal to compromise when it comes to your work? NR: A common reaction when executives see what I have produced is, ‘Oh no, not this.’ When I made Bad Timing I genuinely thought it would appeal to men and women no matter what their backgrounds. Every human being goes through or has some understanding of obsession; it is after all an extraordinary driving force in life. One distribution even asked me to show it to the psychiatrist R.D. Laing. Laing said that because it aroused conflicting emotions it was a film that you would not necessarily want to see with your partner, who might recognise some aspects of character you might be hiding. A lot of my movies have come to be thought about only years after the fact and I’m sad about that but also happy in a way as it’s given them longevity. JW: Are you wary of Puffball suffering a similar fate to some of your other work? NR: I try not to over-concern myself with this but I can honestly state that I do believe in it, and I believe that it will live. It’s very truthful about the subjects of hope, fear and grief and I think people will relate to that. Rita Tushingham gives a truly amazing performance. Kelly Reilly and Miranda Richardson are also wonderful, and I feel that it is very much a woman’s film. I certainly don’t mean this is a chauvinistic way, but in very human terms it leans to what you could call a female sensibility. Men will recognise the film too, but from a different perspective. JW: Can you see thematic links between Puffball and your earlier works? The search for identity, characters being isolated in strange communities, the ongoing tussle between the sexes for example... NR: When I was working with Truffaut on Fahrenheit 451 (1966) I remember him telling me that he seemed to be making the same film all the time. There is a sense that we can’t get everything in and I felt this when it came to making Puffball. I just found that I had so much more question. The film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled. alfabetico dei film indice 2001: A Space Odyssey 85 Dante 01 71 Le orme 96 6x8 Non tutto ciò che vien dopo è progresso 44 Dark Floors 24 Le Pacte des loups 73 The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 93 Peut-être 73 20-seiki shônen [20th Century Boys] 17 The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) 92 35 The 7th Voyage of Sinbad 62 The Dead Outside 25 La Possibilité d’une île [Possibility of an Island] 18 26 Prehod [Transition] 36 Akumu Tantei 2 [Nightmare Detective 2] Death Race Il Profumo della signora in nero 97 Puffball 109 Râ 48 Les Revenants 74 Santos 37 Die Schneider Krankheit 48 74 Don’t look now 108 27 Afterville 51 Eden Log Anomalia 44 Eel Girl 46 Apollo 54 51 Encounters at the End of the World 28 Arbeit für Alle 44 The Facts in the Case of Mr. Hollow 46 Artefacts 19 Frontière(s) 71 45 Fun on earth 46 El ataque of los robots de nebula-5 indice produzioni e distribuzioni 20-seiki shonen Boku no kanoyo wa saibôgu Nippon Television Network Corporation 1-6-1 Higashi Shimbashi, Minato-ku Tokyo 105-7444, Japan T +81 362153028 F +81 362153029 Tzeling Huang [email protected] www.ntv.co.jp Amuse Soft Entertainment Inc. 8th Fl., Shibya Infoss Tower, 20-1, Sakuragaoka-cho, Shibuya 1500031 Tokyo Japan T 81 3 5457 3364 F 81 3 5457 3347 [email protected] www.amuse-s-e.co.jp Akumu Tantei 2 Movie-Eye Entertainment Inc. 4F., daVinci Ginza Bldg., 6-2-1 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan T +81 355370151 F +81 355370152 Shirley Huang [email protected] www.movie-eye.co.jp Bad Blood Days 45 Furia 72 La Science des rêves [The Science of Sleep] Barbarella 103 Kaukosaaren kirous 47 The Signal 38 Boku no kanojo wa saibôgu [Cyborg She] 20 Kingz 47 Sleep Dealer 39 Lazarus taxon 47 Snip 49 Čarlston za Ognjenku [Tears for Sale] 21 Love Story 2050 29 SPEkTR 49 Cavie 51 Martyrs 30 Stagman 49 Chemical Wedding 22 Les Mille merveilles de l’univers 72 Tørt og kjølig 50 Artefacts Chrysalis 23 Monsier Selavy 48 La Cité des enfants perdus 70 31 Tres dìas [Before the Fall] 40 The Mutant Chronicles 32 98 45 Novaya Zemlya [Terra Nova] L’urlo Cotton Candy Vault 50 A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash 112 Title Films Sa Rue des Palais 44 b 45 1030 Brussels, Belgium [email protected] www.titlefilms.be The Objective 33 The Damned 89 El Orfanato [The Orphanage] 34 118 Minerva Pictures Group via Emilio Bianchi, 54 00142 Roma Italy T +39 0685358648 F +39 068558105 www.minervapictures.it [email protected] Cinemavault 175 Bloor St., E. These events screen a considerable number of audiovisual productions, acting as a near obligatory means of securing commercial success: without festivals thousands of films and videos would remain, buyer-less, on the shelves. The number of spectators now drawn to festivals – two million – ensures their real economic impact … not to mention their cultural, social and educational role, creating increasing levels of direct and indirect employment across Europe. and the Commission’s support, around 10 000 audiovisual works, illustrating the richness and the diversity of European cinematographies, are screened. The entrance into the Programme, in May 2004, of ten new countries – Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Malta and Cyprus, can only increase the fruits of this labour. It is evident that the MEDIA Programme of the European Commission support these events, endeavouring to improve the conditions for the distribution and promotion of European cinematographic work across Europe. To this end, it supports more than 100 festivals, benefiting from over € 2 million in financial aid. Each year, thanks to their actions In addition, the Commission supports the networking of these festivals. In this area, the activities of the European Coordination of Film Festivals encourage co-operation between events, strengthening their impact in developing joint activities.
