Un fuoco al centro della casa A Hearth at the Centre of the House TXT_FABRIZIO GALLANTI Ambienti astratti e primordiali per una villa cilena a picco sul Pacifico. Alejandro Aravena, curatore della prossima Mostra d’Architettura alla Biennale di Venezia, l’ha immaginata come un fossile di cemento disposto a lasciarsi corrodere dall’azione del sole e della salsedine Alejandro Aravena, curator of the next Venice Biennale of Architecture, has imagined a Chilean house set high above the Pacific as a concrete fossil willing to let itself be corroded by the action of the sun and the salt spray. Above, the ancestral hearth: this hollow parallelepiped of raw concrete serves as a chimney and an observatory of the sky. The concept of “telluric” crops up frequently in the poetry of Pablo Neruda. He uses the word to indicate the correspondence between the essence of humanity and the earth, which is not a backdrop but the origin, the raw material and the destiny of every human existence. The frequent mention of locations scattered around the Chilean landscape in Neruda’s poems helps us to understand how the extreme conditions of this country’s geography (deserts, glaciers, the Andes, the Pacific Ocean, volcanoes, earthquakes, boundless forests) are fundamental to interpreting its different cultural expressions, including architecture. The design of the Casa OchoQuebradas by Alejandro Aravena / Elemental outlines some of the themes which derive from this relationship. This intervention is part of a new complex of holiday and weekend homes located at Los Vilos, a small city on the Pacific coast. The client, the Ocho al Cubo company, had already carried out a series of similar projects in the past, entrusting them to Chilean and foreign architects, including Toyo Ito, in the area called Marbella, a large holiday resort farther to the south. The landscape of Los Vilos is more violent than in Marbella: an arid, windswept plateau that abuts onto the ocean with a line of jagged cliffs. The word quebrada means a ravine, a cleft in the ground through which it is possible to descend to the level of the sea. The house looks a bit like a stack of volumes piled up on the edge of the cliff. Il centro del progetto è una cavità, dove sarà possibile accendere un falò, attorno al quale sono disposte le funzioni pubbliche della casa, mentre le camere da letto sono collocate nella torre contro la quale si appoggia il grande also recalls pictures of incongruent ruins made up of wooden huts, cars and fishing boats stranded among the trees on the retreat of the waters after the tsunami that struck the Chilean coast in 2010. There is not the slightest intention to blend into the surroundings. On the contrary the house creates an internal microcosm that protects its inhabitants. The building detaches itself from nature, because, at bottom, this nature is hostile. The objective of the project is also to look back more essential forms of life, a far cry from the metropolitan intensity of the country’s capital Santiago. The landscape is reduced to a visual element, glimpsed through a few openings that frame the ocean. This idea of placing the outside world on stage had already been utilized by Aravena in the pavilion for the Ruta del Peregrino in Mexico, a simple hollow parallelepiped of concrete, with a rough viewing platform overlooking a lush valley. In both cases, the construction, despite its bulk, looks as if it were just set down on the ground. The centre of the building is a cavity, in which it will be possible to light a fire, around which are laid out the public functions of the house, while the bedrooms are located in the tower against which Tutto quello che serve in vacanza – area per il pranzo, calore, spazio relax con visuale – racchiuso da volumi semplici e superfici scabre. 98 550 the great fireplace is set. In addition to recalling an ancestral archetype, the hearth at the centre of the house is a common heating system in the patio houses of Chile’s high deserts. The house will be built of raw reinforced concrete and the timber for the formwork reutilized for the cladding of the terrace. The sun, the salt carried by the wind and the weather will slowly leave their marks on the house, just as they have done on the pebbles at the foot of the cliff, rough but at the same time comforting to the touch
