“Alcune persone vengono etichettate a vita perchè fanno una sola cosa”, dice Wink, “Io lo
odierei. Quando ci sono delle regole, non è più arte e non è divertente. Ho capito che non si
possono accontentare tutti quindi è meglio che io mi preoccupi di fare un buon prodotto, la
gente che lo apprezza ti seguirà”.
Nato e cresciuto a Philadelphia, Josh Wink è uno dei pionieri dell’house, della techno e degli
stili più affini.

A 13 anni ha iniziato come apprendista alla Captain Jack, tre anni dopo ha iniziato come dj per
feste private. Nel 1988 (l’anno in cui sono esplosi i rave ) Wink era già conosciuto nello scenario
underground. “Poco dopo ho capito che avrei potuto fare delle canzoni. Invece di lavorare con
la musica di altri, volevo trasferire le mie idee in musica. Da giovane sono stato profondamente
influenzato dalla musica new wave e elettronica. E poi, ascoltando Jazzy Jeff e Cash Money DJ
in Philly, ho capito che volevo capirne ancora di più di quel mondo” .
Nel 1990 è uscito il suo primo EP “Tribal Confusion” per l’etichetta Strictly Rhythm, sotto lo
pseudonimo di E-Culture (con King Britt), e ne sono usciti molti altri sotto vari pseudonimi. Nel
1994 ha fondato la sua etichetta “Ovum Recordings”, su cui è uscita “Liquid Summer”, una
traccia che lo ha aiutato a inserirsi nel circuito internazionale.
Nel 1995, Josh Wink è diventato uno dei primi dj/produttori a far diventare la sua musica
underground un successo internazionale. In quegli anni sono uscite le sue tracce storiche:
“Don’t Laugh” (sotto il nome di Winx per la Nervous Record) e “Higher State of Consciousness”
, che hanno subito scalato le classifiche internazionali e sono apprezzate ancora oggi. Nello
stesso anno ha fatto anche dei remix per Moby e Firefly.
Nel 1996, mentre si guadagnava l’appoggio della critica, inclusa la rivista Rolling Stone, è uscito
il suo album di debutto “Left Above The Clouds” (con il nome di Winx) per la Nervous Records.
Nel 1998, è uscito il suo secondo LP, “HearHere” per la sua etichetta Ovum. Con questo album
Wink si è spinto ancora oltre, invitando artisti tra loro eterogenei come Trent Reznor (Nine Inch
Nails), Caroline Crawley (Shelleyann Orphan/ This Mortal Coil) e Philly poet Ursula Rucker
(Jazzanova/The Roots) a contribuire al suo disco, mescolando insieme trip-hop, drum & bass e
musica ambient, insieme alla house e alla techno, che sono il marchio di fabbrica di Wink.
“Volevo continuare a fare diversi tipi di musica elettronica e non fermarmi solo alla dance”.
Nel 1999, oltre a remixare “Loverboy” di Steve Bug per la Poker Flat, Josh Wink ha iniziato a
lavorare alla compilation della Ovum “Profound Souns”. Il 2000 è stato l’anno di “How’s Your
Evening So Far”, per la FFRR, ed ha anche remixato The Utah Saints e Mood II Swing.

Nel 2001 è uscita “Evil Acid” per la Ovum, ed ha anche collaborato con Carl Cox, producendo
insieme “It’s The Machines” per l’etichetta di Carl Cox, Intec. Nello stesso anno ha remixato
molti brani dei Depeche Mode, Dave Clark e Slam.
Nel 2002 è uscito “Superfreak”, che ha subito catturato l’attenzione mondiale. Ha anche
remixato “Starry Eyed Surprise” di Paul Oakenfold, FC Kahuna, Sebastien Leger e Range of
Motion.
Nel 2003 è uscito il suo terzo album “20 To 20” per la Ovum. L’album è una collezione delle sue
tracce, che lui chiama “le mie armi segrete”. È anche uscito “Profound Sounds Vol. 2” ed ha
continuato a remixare artisti del calibro di Sting, Masters at Work, Ladytron, Harry Romero e la
band GusGus.
Nel 2004 ha catturato di nuovo l’attenzione dei dancefloors con gli EP “516 Acid” e “Oakish” ,
entrambi influenzati dallo stile old-school e dalle nuove tecniche. Ha anche remixato DJ Minx
per l’etichetta di Richie Hawtin, M-nus, la band australiana Infusion, “Shimmer” di Steffan
Goldmann per la Ovum e “Don’t Hide It” di Alexkid’s per la FCommunications.
Nel 2005 ha remixato altri artisti quail Dj Sneak e Alter Ego e nel 2006 è uscita la sua “Have To
Get Back” per la M-nus, con lo pseudonimo di Dinky Dog, all’interno della compilation della
Minus “MinimizeToMaximize”. È anche uscito il terzo volume della Profound Sounds
compilation, in cui era incluso il suo remix di “Everything in Its Right Place” dei Radiohead. Nel
2007 è uscito il suo EP “Thick As Thieves”, per l’etichetta di Steve Bug, Poker Flat , nello stesso
anno è anche uscita “Swirl/Have To Get Back” per la Ovum, oltre a numerosi remix dei Chicken
Lips, Taho, Someone Else e “Screaming Hands” di RadioSlave.
Nel 2008, ancora una volta Wink ha deciso di rinnovarsi, di intraprendere un cambiamento. Con
il suo EP “Stay out all night” è andato controcorrente, avvicinandosi molto all’house anni ’90 e a
St. Germain.

Nel 2009 è uscito il cd “When a Banana Was Just a Banana”. Dopo l’uscita dell’album Wink è
apparso sulle copertine di 9 riviste musicali in tutto il mondo – tra cui DJ Mag in Inghilterra e
Raveline in Germania. Ha anche vinto il premio “Album del mese” da Mixmag. Inoltre ha fatto
un Essential Mix per Radio 1 ed è iniziato il suo tour mondiale.
Nel 2010 Wink ha deciso di realizzare un remix del suo album, dal titolo “When A Banana Was
Just a Banana Remixed and Peeled” , per la cui occasione ha invitato alcuni artisti a remixare
ciascuno una traccia. I remixer includevano Radio Slave, Chateau Flight, Jimpster, Nic Fanciulli
e molti altri. Wink ha anche festeggiato i 15 anni della sua etichetta Ovum con un tour mondiale,
portando Ovum e tutti I suoi artisti nei più grandi eventi mondiali come il Sonar e a Miami.
La sua etichetta, Ovum, sin dal suo inizio nel 1994, ha collaborato con Loco Dice, Shlomi Aber,
Marc Romboy, Dj Pierre, Aaron Carl, King Britt,Steve Bug, D’Julz e ovviamente le produzioni di
Wink. Continua intanto a crescere facendo anche conoscere nuovi talenti. “L’Ovum è fatta solo
di buona musica. Non sentiamo la necessità di seguire la musica del momento”.
Come Dj, sin dai suoi inizi ai rave nel 1988, Wink ha girato il mondo in lungo e in largo
suonando a ogni festival degno di nota, ma anche nelle location più underground e sconosciute.
“La migliore esperienza che si può avere come Dj è essere in grado di creare un atmosfera in
cui il pubblico assorbe da me e io da loro”.
L’unico posto al mondo dove è resident come dj è il Fluid di Philadelphia, città in cui è nato.
Josh Wink rompe gli schemi, crea nuove mode e scopre nuovi talenti, la sua musica (sotto i
suoi vari presudonimi come Wink, Winc, Winx, The Crusher, E-Culture, Size 9, Accent, Dinky
Dog e J Dawg) continua a sperimentare e influenzare.
Il suo stile è un misto di techno, acid house, drum and bass e musica sperimentale. Nelle

interviste spesso parla della sua musica come “costruita intorno alla tensione” e che il suo
lavoro è spesso influenzato “dagli errori, dalle teorie sbagliate, in pratica uso molte cose che gli
altri considererebbero errori..sperimentandoli con effetti, con filtri. Faccio delle cose insomma
che gli altri normalmente non farebbero”. Nel 1996, il giornalista di Rolling Stone, Frank
Broughton ha scritto: “un disco di Josh Wink mette insieme suoni diversi, poi li aggiusta, li
modifica, fino a risultarne un insieme perfetto”. Un altro giornalista, riferendosi agli album
“Profound Sounds”, ha scritto: “è una techno molto sensuale, non è un’insieme di tracce singole
ma una composizione perfetta”.
Wink è stato influenzato dalla musica dei Kraftwerk, dal synthpop degli anni ’80 e dall’house di
Chicago di fine anni ’80. È un grande fan della tecnologia musicale più avanzata, in particolare
del Final Scratch.
Lo stile di Josh Wink è quello di un uomo che non ha paura di oltrepassare le righe dei generi
musicali.
