Design S8934 / Child’s Vest and Hat
Materials: Schachenmayr original Northern.
Vest: 200 (200, 250) g in color #00560 marine
tweed Milward knitting needles, one pair size
4mm (US 6), 1 set (5) double-pointed needles
(dpn) size 4 mm (US 6).
Hat: 100 g in color #00560 marine tweed
From Milward one 40 cm/16” long circular needle
and 1 set (5) dpn size 3,5 mm (US 4).
K1, P1 Rib: Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to
end. Row 2 K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep
row 2 for K1, P1 Rib.
St st: K on RS, P on WS.
Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”
over St st using size 4 mm (US 6) needles; 24 sts
and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4” over K2, P2 Rib
(slightly stretched) using size 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. Take time to check gauge.
VEST
Back: With 4 mm needles, cast on 71 (77, 83) sts
and work in K1, P1 Rib for 3 cm/1¼”. Cont in St st
Finishing: Block pieces to measurements. Sew
shoulder seams.
Armhole edging: With RS facing and 4 mm needle, pick up approx. 68 (74, 78) sts evenly along
each armhole edge and work in K1, P1 Rib for 3
cm, end with a WS row. Bind off all sts on next
RS row, knitwise. Sew side and armhole edging
seams.
Neckband: With RS facing and 4 mm dpn, pick
up and k approx 35 (38, 40) sts along back neck,
24 (27, 30) sts along left front neck, 1 st at center
front and mark this st, 24 (27, 30) sts along right
front neck = 84 (92, 100) sts evenly around neck
edge. Divide sts evenly over 4 needles. Join to
work in rnds.
Next rnd: *K1, p1; rep from * to 1 st before center
marked st, S2KP (sl next 2 sts knitwise, one at
a time, to LH needle, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over
k1), beg with k1, (p1, k1), cont in k1, p1 rib to
end of rnd.
Cont in k1, p1 rib as established and working
S2KP over the center 3 front sts as before every
rnd, until neckband measures 3 cm/1¼”. Bind
off sts loosely in rib.

Shoulder and neck shaping: Bind off 2 (3, 4)
sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 (3, 4) sts at beg of
next 2 rows and 3 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows,
at the same time, bind off center 23 (25, 27) sts,
and working both sides at once with separate
balls of yarn, bind off from each neck edge 3 sts
and 2 sts once. Total length = 38 (41, 44) cm/15
(16, 17½)”.
Front: Work same as back until piece measures
24 (26, 28) cm/9½ (10¼, 11)” or 62 (68, 72) rows
from beg.
V-neck shaping: Next row (RS): Work 24 (27,
30) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center
st, work to end. Working both sides at once with
separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge
every other row 16 (17, 18) times, at the same
time, when same length as back to shoulder,
shape shoulder same as Back.

HAT
To fit head circumference of approx 42-46 cm/
16½ - 18”.
With 3.5 mm circular needle, cast on 112 sts.
Join to work in rnds, taking care not to twist sts
on needle. Place marker for beg of rnd and sl
marker every rnd.
Next rnd: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep last rnd for K2, P2 rib for 23 cm/9” or 64 rnds.
Note: Change to dpn when there a no longer
enough sts to fit comfortably on circular needle.
Dec rnd: [K2, k3tog, k1, p2] 14 times = 84 sts.
Next 3 rnds: *K4, p2; rep from * around.
Dec rnd: [K1, k3tog, p2] 14 times = 56 sts.
Next 3 rnds: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Dec rnd: [K3tog, p1] 14 times = 28 sts.
Dec rnd: [K2tog] 14 times = 14 sts.
Cut yarn and draw through rem sts twice. Pull
tog tightly and secure end.
Total hat length = approx. 26 cm/10¼”.
Make a pompon approx 8 cm/3” in diameter and
sew to top of hat. Fold approx. 6 cm/2½” of lower
edge to outside.
