PROJECT :YOUR LIFE 2013 th 16 -23 rd THE HOST FAMILY 2 January It's my first time in England, but I can understand pretty well the meaning of the sentences. My English family is composed of Mike and Tina, the parents and three sons: Sally, the youngest, Craig, and Mark, who is the oldest and doesn't live anymore with his parents. The house is in Milverton Road, pretty near the school so I can reach it on foot. I'm in a small room with my friend Fausto on the second floor of the house. Andrea Moscato 3mb This is my first English family. In the host family there are: the mum who is a housewife, the dad who has left for Holland for work and there are three sons: the eighteen twins are in London for study and a five year old child. The house is in Olivers Battery and we need to take the bus to go to school. In the house the atmosphere is comfortable, it is beautiful and big. My room isn't very big but it's ok. They cook very well and for breakfast I eat toast with jam and butter at 7.30 and for dinner I have typical dishes at 7.30 pm. In the evening I speak to the mother. In the house there is a boy from New Zealand who is following his college studies. I'm in a family with two other Italian boys Samuel Ioicaliuc 4sc This is my first stay with an English family. The family is composed by five people: the mum Bernardette, the dad Peter, three daughters, their names are Lorna, Tessa and Jocelyn. There is also a South Korean boy who came here to study English. His name is Chan. The house is in Cheriton Road and it’s fifty minutes ‘ walk to school. It is quite big, actually my room isn’t very big. Bernardette cooks dinner for seven o’clock but the food isn’t so good. In the evening I talk to the family, I play society games with them and I learned new expression for example colander, to sneeze and breadcrumbs. Luca Rampoldi 3sb For me this is the first experience in an English family, I was in London two years ago but I stayed in a Hotel. I’m staying with the Honess family. It is very nice. I go to school (City Church) by bus. The family is made up of: Andrew (the father) he is fifty-one years old, he is a sales agent, yesterday evening he showed us how to reach our work placement and he taught the way to arrive to school and to work. Hilary, his wife, she is forty-nine years old (like my mum), I think she is fantastic because she puts me at ease: for example she asks me a lot of questions. Alexader (Alex) he is twenty-three years old, I couldn’t meet him yet because he lives in London where he plays the guitar, he has fallen in love with a Spanish girl her name is Laureen. Jessica (Jessy) she in twenty years old, she is studying at the Kindom in London when she will get a degree she would like to teach dancing to little girls, she is in love with Jack. Olliver (Olly) he is sixteen years old, he attends the high school, he plays the guitar, piano, sax and mouth organ but he doesn’t speak with us and I don’t know why. The house is in Stoorers avenue near Dinlane corner. The house has two floors. On the first there is the sitting room, dining room, bathroom (where we can have a shower) and the kitchen. On the second floor there are four bedrooms (Olly’s, Jessy’s, Andrew & Hilary’s and ours), a big bathroom and a little office. I love our room, it is little but it is very comfortable. There are so many posters, a lot of cds, two guitars and a carpet on the ceiling. The meals are very different from ours but very good. We have dinner earlier than in Italy for example yesterday we had dinner at half past six. The mum cooks but she doesn’t have much time to do it. The father washes the dishes. They don’t use a big tablecloth but some American tablecloths. During our evenings we speak about everything, watch TV and drink a cup of tea. Could I wish anything else? Absolutely not! Kristina .Numerati 5it It’s my first time here in England, and I’ve never been with a family. We live with John and Isobel near the center of Winchester; they are good and friendly people and they try to help me with my horrible English. Luckily the house is near the school and Marta and I spend just ten minutes to reach our school. Our room is small, but it’s comfortable and lovely. We usually have dinner early and Isobel cooks for us trying to prepare something that we like, us the Italian food. Sara Pizzimenti 3sb THE LESSONS I think that the lessons start too early in the morning because we are always late. Our teachers are very nice, but there is a teacher that is very crazy because her eyes are bulging and she is very worrying. During the lessons we must speak only in English otherwise we must pay some pounds. The teacher makes us write , answer questions or even sing some songs like the anthem of Chelsea. I don’t like so much singing, so I move the mouth in time with the others and I hope that the teacher will not notice it. Davide Bosi 3sb In our language lessons we work with two different teachers. We have two lessons in the morning. We do particular activities, different from the normal Italian English lessons, in Italy we study in a class but here we do different and more entertaining things. I thing that is very useful because here we speak only in English. I like this tipe of lessons because there is a contact with the teacher and here we speak more that in Italy. Luca .Comasco 4ea This week I wake up early in the morning to walk towards City Church, in the centre of Winchester, where I attend language lessons with my classmates and meet the teachers. The language lessons are very interesting, involving and exciting but they require the expenditure of a lot mental energies. During the first part of the lesson we have a first teacher, she was born in Africa and mother of three children, she has a good pronunciation, posture and she is very good at involving in all the different activities. During the second part of the lesson, instead, there is a new teacher that is very funny and likeable but she is very agitated and sometimes too exuberant. In my opinion the activities useful for planning my future are those concerned with getting more confidence with the dialogue in English because I would like to practice a profession that allows me to travel and learn about new cultures and people, and this feature is important for success in this dream of mine the activities that I prefer are those in which I learn new words and idioms, basically to talk a correct and fluent English, related to the world of work, university and family. While the activity I don’t like is when I am asked to improvise a little sketch in front of everyone because I am a little shy but it is very useful learning to relate or public speaking in English for every occasion. These lessons are very different from the English lessons in Italy because in Italy the lesson is particularly concentrated on the grammar and the dialogue is more reduced compared to the English lesson in Winchester. The activities are very useful for the stage that we do in the afternoon because we reproduce, during the lessons in the morning, the situation that may arise in the workplace, so to be able to the most. The activities that we do during the morning are very important for planning our future attendance to university because they show us the value of work and its importance to society. Mattia Villa 3sc Our teachers are really good and they make us have fun which isn’t a simple thing! they are able to provide us with funny and interesting lessons full of a lot of expressions for our future. In fact, during the lesson, they teach us how to behave at work, what we should do and say. I think these lessons are really different from our English lessons at home because while in Italy we learn things about English culture o grammatical rules, here we learn things related to our future life. In fact, during the lessons, we also speak about our work experience and about what we should do to get benefits. We can also have a clearer idea of our future plans (like deciding to go to the university) by talking with our classmates or by reading articles written in our book. Marta Santini 3s THE WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT My tutor is named Chris Holloway; she works in an office at Winchester University. The organisation is a charity called “WinACC” (Winchester Action on Climate Change); it has been founded in 2007 and it works to reduce your footprint of greenhouse gases and to make a cleaner environment in Winchester. In this organisation about 3/5 people work, but it has got many volunteers. Their mission is to engage every household and organization in the district of Winchester in cutting the District’s emissions by 30 per cent over the 11 years from 2004 to 2015. My tutor is a very green person: she always goes to work by bike, today too, notwithstanding the ice on the streets. Actually they are lending people a little monitor which can display how much energy your house produces through a sensor near the meter. The used energy is measured in kWh or in CO2 emission, so you can know your footprint, or even in pounds, which shows you how much money you’re spending for energy. I’m involved in this project: I’ve to check and number all these monitors. Fausto .Capelli 3sb (Steve’s Barber shop) My tutor was really helpful with my questions and he was excited to answer to what I asked him. I discovered he was the owner of the activity, but the shop (I mean the building) isn’t his propriety, it is rented. In each shops he has he proposes the same pattern. In fact his job is divided in two barber’s shop: one in Winchester and one in Southampton. He placed some cameras in the shop to have the vision of both shops in every moment and everywhere (there are some cameras also in the warehouses). The shop is composed of two parts: a barber’s one and another one containing gym’s products. He is satisfied about the locations of his shops but he told me that he would like to move to Spain for five years. He started with some hairstyles workshop in his mid teens to definitely open his shop in 1988. Until the workshop experiences his goal has always been to be a barber, and now he has realized his “little dream”. Every day he works from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Saturday (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.) and Sunday (when the shop is closed). He works with his assistant. When I asked him which kind of skills/abilities a barber’s assistant has to have, he smiled answering “Basically she/he doesn’t have to cut the head of any client”. Then he added the other serious qualities: he/she must be funny and friendly with a client and she/he must be polite in every case. He wasn’t so opened about his future prospective. He only said he wants to continue with the activity and to have the really ownership of the shop. Luca .Beretta 5it I had the possibility to work in two places. The first is as a helper of a dance teacher of very little girls in two placements. First I was embarrassed because it was an all pink environment and some of the girls were whimsical and maybe spoilt. I wasn’t lonely, with me there’s Federica a very nice and beautiful girl of my group. We helped this teacher, Emily Dickinson, to show something to the girls. I felt as if I were in an unreal world as Alice in wonderland for the many peluches and colours. It wasn’t useful for my future work but I was for my task as animator in my parish youth centre. I found in Emily a particular elegance but I couldn’t speak with her at all except for a few communications concerning how to arrange the girls and what to give to them. The second could be in a dry cleaner, near my home, but there were some unexpected (snow and my tutor’s diseases) and I couldn’t work there but I work with Chris Polack in his office as a secretary. Martina . Repetto 5it I have to work for Shake Away, the largest Milkshake bar company in the world. There I have to prepare milkshake for the costumers and sometimes we have to prepare vary strange taste of milkshake. My superiors is nice and sometimes crazy but is very funny to work with him. Alessia Civini 3sb The activity started twenty years ago when Kate’s father decided to open the tea room. Kate and her love to work there because they think this work will improve their capability of organised work and in general their life. Everybody in “tea room team” decided to work here because collegues they like so much tea and because they want to communicate their passion to the customers. Their work starts at nine o’ clock (a.m.) and finishes at five o’ clock (p.m.) and all of the team have lunch between one and three o’ clock. This work is very weary but Kate, my tutor, thinks that if everybody works hard maybe “Forte tea room” will be famous everywhere. I loved working as a waitress in the tea room because I enjoy washing tables, cleaning cutlery, making tea, and coffee or hot chocolate and waiting on tables too. Now I can understand the differences in the type of tea or coffee.. it’s great! I guess that this work experience has helped me to learn many things that I will keep it for myself all life. Chiara Bellotti 3sc UNIVERSITIES The University of Winchester is very big ,there are five buildings in it. This university was founded about 1500-1600 years ago. This University has about 5000 students . There are lots of subjects in this University but the most popular is law , multimedial studies , history and performing arts. Filippo Corona 3sc The origins of the university of Winchester began in 1840. The college was renamed King Alfred's college in 1928. There are various faculties, such as faculty of arts; faculty of business and law; faculty of education, health and social care; faculty of humanities and social sciences. There are here about of 3'000 students. The fees are expensive about £ 8,500 at year. There is a campus at university so the students are accomodated. It is a public university. The university has a "motto" : " wisdom and knowledge". That's a very cosy university, small but big at the same time. There are a lot of opportunities for the work career so we can easily find a job .Study here one day? I don't think so, but in the life never say never. I would like to study there, anyway . Mattia Campari 3sc I'm sure that as soon as I spot my future career I will follow it, but now I have to imagine something I would like to do after school. So, I want to continue studying and going to university. I know that is an important choice and actually I began my high school with the intention to get a degree! I don't know which university I will go to, but probably in Pavia, even if going and studying abroad might be a fascinating idea. During my University years I might do a PT job to earn some money to live better. None of these things is sure! I live in a family of teachers and becoming a teacher is not bad, but I have to choose what subject tol teach. At the moment I'm very good at Physic and Chemistry, even if I have just begun both! If in the following years I will go on getting good results I may seriously think about this. Matteo Bertassi 3sc The University of Winchester was established in 1840, and it combines this heritage with innovative learning and teaching. More or less here there are 5000 students, from different countries there are in fact some Italians. We support many courses and expect the best from our teachers because they are dealing with students full of quality and should be able to improve in all. If students live near the university obviously prefer to go home and save on accommodation but some remain here thanks to our campus. The University of Winchester offers a high quality of teaching and research across a range of subjects. More or less are 10 different courses. We are a dynamic and progressive Department with a vision that combines excellence in learning and teaching with an active research and consultancy culture. The facilities will also continue to improve each year as new equipment. Sailing and fencing are the most popular. The Faculty offers an exciting range of study provision in the arts and humanities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including a strong community of postgraduate research students. In academic terms, the Faculty is comprised of three different departments. Winchester is a small but lively city offering an array of award-winning pubs and bars that provide an ideal setting for a night out. It has more than its fair share of cafes and restaurants and so there is something to suit all budgets and tastes. The University of Winchester is a value-driven institution which offers excellent programmes of study sustained by teaching and research of the highest quality. However, the costs are very high. We have bars on campus and students are excited because it is a great comfort. Giulia Bernardelli 3sc AROUND ENGLAND I already visited London last year so, I took part in the “alternative group”; we went to Camdem Town, here all is very strange, alternative and unusual, the roadside is full of stalls, street artists and musicians every where. After that ,by underground we moved to Carnaby street, Oxford street and Piccadilly Circus that was amazing I , we went there for shopping and we also visited the “choccywoccydoodah chocolaterie” that is famous for reality TV, it’s fantastic because everything is made of chocolate. Everything in London is magic, I hope to see that wonderful city once more. Simone Pelizzari 5it This morning we left Winchester at about 9.00 and we arrived in London at 11.00. After a little tour of the city on the coach we were divided in three groups: classic tour for those who had never visited London, Camden Town tour or South-London tour for the other students. I was in Camden Town where I saw a lot of nice shops and I bargained with sellers to buy something. I did very good purchases. After 2.30 I caught the underground to go to the Piccadilly Circus, the London’s shopping centre. I visited Oxford Street and I went to eat something. At about 5.30 we met together again with the rest of my mates and we returned to Winchester. It was a great day Andrea Deluca 3sb The best day was when we visited London, that was my seventh time in that city and I love it. For me it is the second most beautiful city in the world after New York. We visited a little part of London, only Camden town and Oxford street. In conclusion I can say this holiday was very beautiful, we had a lot of fun and we learnt new things. Daniele Fracchia 4sb Today I went to London for my first time. It was very cold and snowy. I didn’t imagine that it is so big and full of places to visit. We saw the London Eye (which is very very big), Buckingham Palace where queen Elizabeth the Second lives; it has a lot of rooms and it’s overly protected. We saw the prime minister apartment at 10 Downing Street, the two most important bridges of London. We also saw the Big Ben clock which I didn’t think so tall. In the afternoon we saw a lot of shops like: Hard Rock Café, the Apple’s shop and Ferrari’s shop; there’s also a real big Nike shop spreading on four floors where I bought a shirt. We wanted to see Harrods but it was too far away on foot. I really liked London and I hope to return there with more free time to spend. Manuel Mantelli 3sb
