Simbolo della città, è un gioiello dell’architettura romanico-gotica italiana, la cui costruzione ebbe
inizio nel 1290 per volontà del Papa Nicolò IV. La sintesi e l’armonia degli stili si sublima nello slancio
verticale e nello splendore dei mosaici della facciata, opera di Lorenzo Maitani. Nella cappella del
Corporale, affrescata da Ugolino di Prete Ilario, si conserva il Corporale del Miracolo di Bolsena
(1263): qui è l’origine dell’istituzione della Festa del Corpus Domini celebrata dai cattolici nel mondo.
Uno dei maggiori cicli pittorici del Rinascimento è quello della Cappella di San Brizio: gli affreschi,
iniziati da Beato Angelico con l’aiuto di Benozzo Gozzoli, sono opera di Luca Signorelli. Di pregio sono
anche gli affreschi nell’abside, la Madonna con Bambino di Gentile da Fabriano e il gruppo della
Pietà, opera di Ippolito Scalza. • This jewel of Romanesque Gothic architecture is a symbol of
the city. Its construction began in 1290 commissioned by Pope Nicholas IV. The synthesis and
harmony of styles are sublime in their upward movement. They are exhalted by the splendour
of the mosaics on a gold backround that grace the facade. This is the work of Maitani. In
the chapel of the Corporal, or communion altar cloth, which features frescoes by Ugolino
di Prete Ilario, is preserved the corporal of Bolsena Miracle (1263): here is the origin of the
institution of the feast of Corpus Christi celebrated by Catholics in the world. One of the major
fresco cycles from the Renaissance is found in the Cappella di San Brizio: the frescoes, begun
by Fra Angelico with the help of Benozzo Gozzoli, are the work of Luca Signorelli. Of great
importance are the frescoes in the apse, from the end of the 1300s, the Madonna with Child
by Gentile da Fabriano, and a marble group of the Pietà by Ippolito Scalza.

Sede di 33 Pontefici il complesso monumentale del XIII sec., restaurato completamente negli anni ’60,

Costruito per ospitare l’ente sovrintendente alla costruzione del
Duomo. La facciata del palazzo è oggi una delle rare presenze
barocche dell’architettura civile orvietana. • This was originally
constructed in order to host the group in charge of the
construction of the Duomo. The Facade of the palace is one of the rare extant examples of
Baroque architecture to be found in the city of Orvieto.

è una delle torri con orologio più antiche d’Italia; originariamente era una meridiana,
costruita per scandire il ritmo lavorativo del cantiere del Duomo. La statua di
bronzo che la sovrasta, denominata “Maurizio”, risale al 1348. • It is one of the
oldest clock towers in Italy, used to mark the daily work schedule during the
construction of the Cathedral. Originally it held a Sundial. The bronze statue
found at the top, named “Maurizio,” is from 1348.

La necropoli Etrusca, del VI-V sec. a.C., è formata da tombe a camera , costruite
con blocchi di tufo ricavati nella zona , ognuna delle quali è identificata con il nome
del capostipite inciso sull’architrave. • The necropolis, dating from the 6th to the 5th centuries B.C., is made up
of chamber tombs built with blocks of tufa quarried locally. The name of the earliest person who was interred
in each tomb is carved into its architrave.

Capolavoro dell’ ingegneria rinascimentale, fu costruito nel 1527 da Sangallo il Giovane per ordine di Papa Clemente
VII., è profondo 62 metri ed è accessibile grazie a due scalate elicoidali indipendenti e sovrapposte, ognuna di 248

Fu costruita nel 1200 al centro della città e divenne il simbolo della potenza del comune. In
cima alla torre si trova la campana con i simboli delle arti e il sigillo del popolo ed è possibile
ammirare la città dall’alto con un vasto paesaggio. Il Palazzo dei Sette, adiacente alla torre,
risale allo stesso periodo e fu sede dei Signori Sette (consoli) e residenza di vari Pontefici; oggi
è sede di mostre ed esposizioni. • It was built in the 1200’s in the city centre and became the symbol of the
power of the municipality. At the top of the tower is the bell with the symbols of the arts and the crafts of the
people; from above, you can see a view of the city with its vast landscape. Palazzo dei Signori Sette, adjacent
to the Tower, dates from the same period. Once the headquarters of the Signori Sette (public authority) and
the residence of various Popes, it is now home to expositions and exhibitions.

passages corresponding to the city constructed above on the tufa plateau. The guided tour will point out
pigeonholes, a quarry of pozzolana and an old olive mill. Visitors can follow an itinerary that allows them to

La chiesa è un raffinato esempio di stile romanico-gotico, arricchita da un
portico del ‘400 e da una torre campanaria dodecagonale.
I sotterranei custodiscono reperti e strutture che vanno dal periodo villanoviano a

style, enriched by a portico constructed in the 1400’s and a dodecagonal
(twelve-sided) bell tower. The underground spaces reveal relics and
structures that date from the “Villanoviano” period to the Medieval one.

23 PALAZZO DEL POPOLO “CENTRO CONGRESSI • PALACE OF THE PEOPLE “CONFERENCE CENTRE”
Iniziato nel XII sec. e costruito in stile gotico romanico, fu sede del Capitano del
Popolo e delle adunanze pubbliche, ha subito molti restauri. L’ultimo intervento del
1991, durante il quale è stato rinvenuto un tempio etrusco, ha riportato il palazzo
alla sua funzione di luogo per le assemblee quale centro congressuale. • Begun in
the 12th century and built in Romanesque Gothic style, this was the seat of
the Capitano del Popolo (Captain of the People) and a public meeting place.
It has undergone many renovations, most recently in 1991, during which an
Etruscan Temple was discovered and the building was returned to its original
function as a conference center where public meetings are held.

Risalente al 1216, fu restaurato nel sec. XVI su disegno di Ippolito Scalza con
l’ampliamento del palazzo ma non è mai stato completato. Il progetto ha dato all’edifico
l’aspetto di dignità civica come sede municipale ed è ancora oggi il centro amministrativo
della città. Interessanti gli affreschi e i reperti conservati all’interno. • Dating back
to 1216, Palazzo Comunale was restored in the 16th century using a design by
Ippolito Scalza for the enlargement of the building: It has never been implemented.
The project gave the building the appearance of civic dignity as the municipal seat
and is still today the administrative centre of the city. Interesting frescoes and artifacts can be found within.

Recentemente restaurato nella facciata rinascimentale e negli eleganti interni, è sede
operativa della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Orvieto. Il restauro funzionale ha
inoltre trasformato l’edifico in un centro, tecnologicamente attrezzato, per mostre e
convegni. • Recently renovated in the Renaissance façade and elegant interiors,
is headquarters of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Orvieto. The functional
renovation has also transformed the building into a centre, technologically

Originariamente edificio romanico, la chiesa fu completamente ricostruita nel ‘600 dopo
un terremoto. Nel vicino convento, oggi sede del Palazzo del Gusto, vi é un chiostro, il cui
disegno é stato attribuito al Sangallo. All’interno del complesso del San Giovanni, nella parte
sotterranea dove erano le cantine del convento, attualmente vi ha sede l’ Enoteca Regionale
che ospita la produzione di DOCG, DOC e IGT dell’Umbria. • Originally a Romanesque
building, the Church was completely rebuilt in the 1600’s after an earthquake. In the
nearby Convent, today the site of Palazzo del Gusto, there is a cloister, whose design
has been attributed to Sangallo. The interior of the complex of San Giovanni, in the
underground part where the convent’s cellars were once located, currently houses the Enoteca Regionale,
which offers an array of DOCG, DOC and IGT wines of Umbria.

San Giovenale é ritenuta la chiesa più antica di Orvieto, costruita agli inizi del 1000, è uno dei più
significativi esempi dell’arte romanico-gotica; ampliata nel XIV sec. ha all’interno affreschi di scuola
orvietana del ‘200-‘300. • Believed to be the oldest church in Orvieto, it was built at the
beginning of the 11th century, and is one of the most important examples of RomanesqueGothic. Enlarged in the 14th century, it has frescoes from the Orvieto School of 1200-1300

La chiesa del XIII sec., con una semplice facciata e all’interno affreschi con le storie di S. Lorenzo. La
base dell’altare è un’ara etrusca; sopra, il ciborio del XII sec. • A church from the 13th century,
it has an extremely simple façade and inside frescoes with the stories of St. Lawrence”. The
support of the altar is an etruscan artefact. Above, a XIIth century ciborium.

Del XIII sec. conserva al suo interno il monumento funebre al Cardinale DeBraye di
Arnolfo di Cambio, la cappella Petrucci del Sammicheli e un crocefisso ligneo che la
tradizione vuole abbia parlato a S. Tommaso d’Aquino. • From the 13th century, this
church holds the funeral monument of Cardinal De Bray by Arnolfo di Cambio, the
Petrucci chapel by Sammicheli and a wooden crucifix that, it is said, spoke to S.
Tommaso d’Aquino (St. Thomas Aquinas).

Eretta nel XIII sec., fu sede di importanti avvenimenti storici: i funerali di Enrico di Cornovaglia, e la
canonizzazione del re di Francia Luigi IX. Il convento adiacente, oggi completamente restaurato, è
sede della storica Biblioteca Comunale “Luigi Fumi”. • Erected in the 13th century, this was the
site of important historical events: the funeral of Henry of Cornwall and the canonization of
the king of France, Louis IX. The adjacent convent, now completely restored, is the site of
the historic “Luigi Fumi” public library.
41 FORTEZZA ALBORNOZ E PORTA ROCCA • ALBORNOZ FORTRESS AND GATE
Fu fatta costruire dal Cardinale Egidio Albornoz durante il periodo in cui
la Corte Papale si trovava ad Avignone per restaurare lo Stato Pontificio.
• This fortress was commissioned by the Cardinal Egidio Albornoz
during the period in which the Papal Court was moved to Avignon,
France in an effort to restore the Papal State.
