They are popular in that Dutch artist Escher used as elements for his artworks. Later, several methods have been discovered for constructing them as actual 3D objects, and they gave a new genre of optical illusion. I myself found one of such methods in my research on machine interpretation of line drawings. On the basis of this method, I also found several new classes of impossible objects. They might be classified into five generations: (1) anomalous objects, which appear to be 3D realization of impossible objects, (2) impossible motion objects, which appear to create motion that defies physical law such as the gravity law, (3) ambiguous cylinders, whose appearances change drastically in a mirror, (4) partly invisible objects, which partly disappear in a mirror, and (5) topology disturbing objects, which change topological property in a mirror. I will show them in the order I found together with their mathematical background. Optical illusion created by those impossible objects reveals fragility of human vision systems, and raise new research problems on how the humans perceive 3D structures, and why they acquire those abilities.
