Aninha Ribeira da Silva, also known as Anita, is a lovely and passionate 18-year old girl, she loves living outdoor and enjoy the freedom of huge spaces. But since her father left his family she had to live in Laguna, (province of Santa Catarina / South Brazil) a small town where her mother works as a housemaid. Anita, however, wants to leave home by moving in with her married sister in Sao Paolo or even by following her uncle Antonio who has joined the “farrapos” (tramps or poor peasants) who rebelled against the emperor of Brazil and declared the independence of the “Rio Grande do Sul.” All of the girl’s dreams, however, fade away when Manuel, an aged craftsman who lives nearby, asks her to marry him. Her mother persuades Anita to accept so that she can help support her poor family. While Anita sheds hot tears for that forced marriage a young Italian sailor, who had been sentenced to death by the Genoa martial court, lands in Rio de Janeiro. Immediately and enthusiastically he joins the “farrapos” becoming part of their struggle for independence. It will be precisely thanks to this seaman and his incredible endeavour to transport the vessels through the forest to attack imperial forces from the back, that Laguna is conquered by the “farrapos” and thanks to him once again Anita’s life changes radically. As a matter of fact, the young political exile is Giuseppe Garibaldi and Anita, who was left a widow by Manuel, immediately falls in love with him. This is how the extraordinary events begin that will turn this young Brazilian woman into a legend. But the imperial counteroffensive obliges Anita, Garibaldi and the “farrapos” to withdraw through the forest amidst continues skirmishes up to the Pelotas narrows, where the imperial guards have prepared an ambush. While the “farrapos” are massacred , Anita is taken prisoner. She is sure that Garibaldi has died while leading his companions and asks to bury his body. Major Albuquerque admires her courage and gives her permission to do so. But Anita finds out that her Giuseppe escaped the massacre and with a bold expedient she, too, manages to run away. After many vicissitudes she reunites with Garibaldi who had withdrawn to Sao Simao to prepare a counterattack being sure he had lost her forever. In the meantime, the imperial government has hired Moringue, a merciless half-cast outlaw to get rid of that Italian adventurer and his partner with any means… The killer attacks Sao Simao with his men while Garibaldi is not there and Anita, who has just delivered a baby, is forced to run away and hide in the forest with the little Menotti. Moringue, however, manages to find her and tries to oblige her to lure Garibaldi in an ambush. But Anita fearless screams and saves her companion who had immediately thrown himself to follow her traces heedless of the danger. In an epic duel Garibaldi kills Moringue and can again hug Anita and his son. This last event leads Garibaldi to think what to do: after parting from the “farrapos” he moves to Montevideo trying to offer his partner a bit of serenity. While Garibaldi, leading the Italian Legion, fights against Argentina, out of her love for him Anita decides not to follow him and tries, with some difficulties, to adjust to a bourgeois life while taking care of the household and raising other two children. When finally Garibaldi is called back to Italy , Anita offers to go ahead of him with a great spirit of sacrifice and settles in Genoa with her children so that he can organize the South-American volunteers and later lead his fight for the liberation of Rome. But when the Roman Republic falls under the French cannon-shots, Anita does not leave her hero alone. She arrives in the eternal city to side with Garibaldi and leads the heroic resistance until the dramatic pull-back in the swamps of the province of Romagna /( North Italy), where she ends her passionate life at only 27.... Anita (Una vita per Garibaldi) DIRECTOR’S INFORMATION (Aurelio Grimaldi) Among my continuous and countless projects, I would have never imagined that I would make a film about Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Giuseppe is the only true great Italian national hero, the only one able to unite the right and the left parties (even Mazzini or Cavour, Carlo Alberto or Vittorio Emanuele II did not succeed in doing so) The hero of all Italians, and the only one really known all over the world together with Anita, beautiful and hot-tempered , a superb companion of the great Giuseppe. Though I had never dreamt of making a movie about Garibaldi and Anita I would have imagined it as a huge, grand, spectacular film. Therefore, when Raffaele Mallucci submitted this project to me which was already in a rather advanced stage and with a rather complicated production background, I was caught by surprise but also pleasantly happy. The initial plan was to make a really spectacular movie but, because of serious financial difficulties, it was necessary to transform it into a more private, sentimental film. Even before starting re-writing the screenplay, I called it 'the portrait of two young heroes, full of passion and ideals, but not of rationality and awareness. That is how one becomes a hero. The previous script was filled with battles and big mass scenes, including some inevitable special effects. I have always abused a sentence by Pasolini, said by Sergio Citti, which approximately read: 'A film that needs special effects to create an emotion is not real cinema.’ And this time there was a producer who told me:” We called you because we want this story must remain beautiful even without special effects. “ So, the story of two young people falling in love while fighting everybody’s freedom has become less “spectacular”and much more intimate, private, filled with passion and deep feelings. Garibaldi’s story has been told many times: for many years now, however, the story had been told only on TV, with all of its flows rather than merits. Now we are trying to do so but from an unusual point of view: when Giuseppe and Anita had not yet become, nor did they ever dream of becoming a myth. They were only two young human people ( and I abuse once again Pasolini) 'passionate', and full of overwhelming passion , like all lovers. What we have tried to tell through this movie are precisely this ideals and passion. Of course we have always taken into account the historical records completing them. This has been our privilege and our ambition: to do something that history books cannot report: the inner feelings of human beings, their emotions, their secrets. AURELIO GRIMALDI Anita (Una vita per Garibaldi) INTERVIEW WITH AURELIO GRIMALDI How did you think of making e a film about Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi? The idea of the film is not mine , but of the producer Raffaele Mallucci, a great friend of Brazil. He had already produced television series and documentaries there. He had seen a stage piece on the love story between Giuseppe and Anita and immediately dreamt of making a film . It took him years, full of countless obstacles and problems, three different likely directors, false and difficult starts , but finally we made it. Before joining the film what did you know about Anita and Giuseppe? Very little. I knew the time of the Italian Risorgimento and Garibaldi very well , (I have a degree in Modern History), but I knew absolutely nothing about his South American period. It is not described in our history schoolbooks but only hinted at. I did not even know that Anita was Brazilian: I thought she was from Argentina or Uruguay, since I knew that they had lived for many years in Montevideo. Before joining the project I obviously did some research and discovered a really unexpected story of love and 'freedom'. How did you tell their love story? Anita was a very special, unique, and extraordinary woman. She was forced to marry at the age of 14 . She met Garibaldi at 18 and it was love at first sight. Her husband had been recruited by the Imperial Guards, in the civil war in the Southern States which did not want to join the Brazilian Empire. Garibaldi was obviously fighting on the side of the revolutionary independence (the war of farrapos,” the ragged”). It was love at first sight. Anita tried to resist, to remain faithful to her husband. But love was stronger. Between special people love always wins. It was, however, 1839. At that time, a married woman who ran away was considered a despicable woman. Therefore, the new life Anita was living was a life 'against the current'. A passionate and unbreakable couple: four children, wars, battles, ideals, escapes, chases and defeats. But always united. Always deeply in love. A truly beautiful love story. Aurelio, you are known, and sometimes criticized because your films are rich in sensuality and eroticism. In this love story that you say is particularly passionate, are we supposed to expect “hot” scenes? It depends on the meaning of this word. Love between Anita and Giuseppe was certainly 'hot'. But it was not the purpose of this film to give erotic details of our two young heroes. In our film there's a lot of sensuality but it is not explicit. Frankly speaking, in such a context it would have been bad taste. What interested us is to tell the story of passion and romantic love of our two heroes not their eroticism. And passion is sometimes more sexy than an explicit scene. Anita (Una vita per Garibaldi) How did you cast the actors? Who are Anita and Giuseppe? Garibaldi is played by Maurizio Aiello, who has an extraordinary resemblance to him. It is clear that the character of Garibaldi could not be played by anyone. The iconography of Garibaldi is known to every Italian, and an actor who did not look like him would have not been credible. Maurizio embraced the character fully and, in my opinion is very believable. With Anita I was much 'freer'. Anita died very young, she was just 28 years old, while she was pregnant for the fifth time. Her iconography is uncertain and not completely recognizable. There are some portraits of her which are not perfectly identical to each other, and not particularly expressive. I started auditioning in Rio, than in Florianopolis and in Laguna. The only actress who struck me like a thunderbolt was Milena Toscano, clearly of Italian origin (but she does not speak a word in Italian): a beautiful girl , an actress with a lot of temperament, strong, extraordinarily communicative, on the set and off the set. She reminded me of Penelope Cruz when she was eighteen when we shot “La ribelle”. Milena Toscano has impressed everyone and I hope she will become a strength of the film. Was the movie fully shot in Brazil? Yes. We shot everything in Laguna, the real little town of the Province of Santa Catarina where Anita was born and where she really met Garibaldi. We filmed the scene of their first “glance” precisely in the square where this actually happened. I must admit that we all were very moved. Anita is very popular in Brazil, the entire city of Laguna is dedicated to her; she is a real national heroine. And she is known by the surname Garibaldi and not with her Brazilian maiden name or the name of her first husband. She is Anita Garibaldi for everybody, which in Portuguese is pronounced Garibàugi ! How was it for you to shoot in a place so far away from Italy? Frankly speaking, very well. It was a very special experience. We Italians have a a lot of misinformation and prejudices on other countries which are far away from us. We believe that the others are all savages. Brazil is a huge country, a real continent of contradictions but full of irrepressible vitality. Working with a 90% Brazilian crew, the film has enjoyed all this vitality, accompanied by a very high level of professionalism, in some cases the standards have been even higher than the Italian ones. Those who will watch the movie will notice it. We did miracles considering the limited financial resources we had. And much of the credit goes to the wonderful crew, the actors, to the Brazilian crew members. What is your reply to those who polemically ask you what is the meaning of making a movie on a outdated story about Anita and Garibaldi? That we did not make a “historical” movie like the stories told in a history school-book. We described two special, beautiful and passionate human beings. We have told their story when none of them could have dreamt of becoming great and famous' heroes'. Everything happened because their hearts were leading them along a given path. I do not know nor do I believe that today the audience is looking for stories like this, but sometimes, who knows… Cinema is full of surprises. Anyway , 2007 is the twohundredth anniversary of Garibaldi’s birth. And I do hope that this anniversary will bring us luck .
