Trader Joe’s is certainly an exception to this rule and likes expanding at its own pace, paying its own way as it does so without having recourse to bank loans and stock offerings. Trader Joe’s, al contrario, ama espandersi secondo i propri ritmi di autofinanziamento per non ricorrere al credito o ulinary specialities and exotic foods democratised for a consuming public that tends to over-estimate the perceived quality/price ratio of its goods and services and to embrace its formula with an enthusiasm that’s hard to find elsewhere in a US supermarket panorama bloated by the overabundance of food. This is Trader Joe’s, the Californiabased retail chain that is known among other things for a numerous and loyal coterie of customers that have embraced the nearly exclusive stock of the chain’s privatelabel items in a cleverly selected assortment of little depth needing little cash for advertising and promotions. Uno store Trader Joe’s. quick tally shows that TJ’s now has no fewer than 360 stores, although market analysts say that the number could readily exceed 1,000 under other financing schemes. Even more unusual is the fact that the chain is owned by the G ermany-based Aldi Sud discount chain, the most profitable of its kind in the world. What’s the secret to all this success? Implacable pursuit of a market niche and defending it through instant brand recognition appear to be the keys. It’s a business model that has held ceaseless sway ever since 1967, when then-owner Joe C oulombe remade his original store in Pasadena, C alifornia, in the comic-book, tongue-in-cheek like image of the South Sea adventure stories popular in the 1800s. It’s the ironic leitmotif we still see today underscoring the pursuit of rare and unknown foods from far-off, exotic corners of the Earth. A good example of what we mean here can be seen in the off-hand nonchalance with which store staff wear their colourful Hawaiian shirts. Another, linked idea is the ship model in which each store manager is the captain and stock and sales staff the crew members. This is also the underlying metaphor of the The F earless Flyer house organ, the only advertising vehicle the chain uses besides limited local radio commercials. Let’s also note that TJ’s has targeted a definite consumer segment, the so-called over-educated-underpaid who are drawn to alternative culture options and consumer models in contrast to the mainstream mass-market concept. In effect, these consumers find an informal, minimalist environment that blends in perfectly with the popular narrative line of far-away places, origins and idiosyncrasies of the items (stockkeeping units, S K Us) on sale. Competitive edge and efficiency The assortment of S U Ks is clearly more limited than what we find in the other big retail chains. F or, although these ite ms c ater to TJ’s c onsum er demands, the criterion for inclusion is different compared to normal supermarkets. Every week managers at Trader Joe’s stock 15-20 new items discovered by the chain’s 40 scouts throughout the world and keep the rotations going. If sales of these items do not rise all’azionariato pubblico. The condition sine qua non in this model is that their prices be highly competitive. TJ’s makes sure its sup pliers get big-volume contra cts, prompt p ayments and fair profit margins, asking in return that they trim costs und er the Aldi mod el. The no-frills wood shelving, the targete d use of te chnology and the mania c al attention to the cost of store loc ales are p art of the tra d e-off that re quires high productivity of its staff in exchange for solid salaries and inc entives. This is the a p p arent se cret b ehind profit margins that, a c cording to industry rumours, are the highest in the U S. This would also explain how the chain self-financ es a ne w store over thre e ye ars. Another notable, and noticeable, feature of TJ’s is the approach, at turns funny, wide-eyed and even surreal, it takes in the signs it uses to call attention to its specialities. In a mix of seemingly cryptic slang that’s well understood by its loyal consumer base, the store signs help spread word-of-mouth advertising that paves the way for the irresistible spread of the chain and its thriving in the face of the discount enticements by Walmart. It’s a business model that translates into a consumer fan club that posts its latest productions and sound bites on Youtube and Internet blogs and regularly gathers in force at each new store opening.
